6:37 am
>> so what is the the definition of deflation. >> it is a drop in the price of goods and services. in other words it is the exact opposite of inflation. now economist expect that the the near 60 percent plunge in oil prices have pushed down wholesale and consumer prices in december from the previous month. that leaves them 1 percent higher from a year ago and for a frame of reference the fed wants 2 percent inflation, we're half that. so now people are getting worried. >> but shouldn't we like falling prices? doesn't it mean things are cheaper. >> reporter: i know, it is counter intuitive but when deflation is persistent it does cause a vicious economic cycle. the here's how it goes companies reduce their prices then that eats into their profits. it will ultimately leads them to cut jobs and wages. then, as consumers, we have less money to spend, and you know, we have to adjust so we
6:38 am
can pay for our fixed costs like taxes and mortgages. the the longer the deflation goes on there is a higher risk that people and businesses get kind of used to the situation and they delay all of their spending, they are hoping they can eventually buying things more cheaply. we will stay mired in the downward spiral. >> with that being said, jill what do you think do majority of the economist think deflation is on the way. >> reporter: big question is whether the the current drop in prices is temporary or something more scary that is brewing. odd are that while negative readings on deflation could persist in the first half of the year and we think, the economist out there really think, the situation is probably temporary. so keep your fingers crossed and when you hear deflation now you will be smart and explain it to everybody. >> i was taking notes. thanks jill. appreciate it, as always. 6:38. philadelphia taxi cabdriver gets a tip of a life time.
