>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". tonight at 11:00 a student plunges to her death after falling out the window of a center city apartment building. good evening i'm jessica dean. >> i'm chris may. and when that young woman fell, she hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk. she, too, was badly injured. this hall happened in a bustling

part of center city on on 16th street near chestnut and people were shocked. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live there with more. todd? >> reporter: chris temple university student fell from an eighth floor window from the building you see right over my shoulder here. and when she landed, she wound up hitting a 44-year-old woman who was walking on the sidewalk on 16th street just south of chestnut. the boots of the victim lying the sidewalk were a stark reminder of the tragedy that unfollowed in center city. 18-year-old freshman at temple university fell to her death from an eighth floor window. >> she may even have been sitting on the ledge about 2-foot wide 11 possibly taking some pictures. >> reporter: it's believed the student may have slipped as she was going back inside. the woman was visiting two friends inside an art institute of philadelphia dorm room when she fell just before 6:00 thursday night. both of those male students were being questioned by police. james porter was working at the

marathon grill nearby when he saw ambulances and police arrive arrive. >> it's a tragedy. my heart goes out to her family. >> reporter: 18-year-old hit a 44-year-old woman who was walking on the 16th street sidewalk. she was rushed to hahnemann university hospital. she suffered fractured vertebrae in her neck and had some of her teeth teeth knock out. >> the 4484 old female she was conscious much she was talking. she was very upset and she was complaining of pain. >> reporter: at the time of the accident the streets here were crowded with pedestrians. >> never think that someone would like fall on you while you're trying to walk down the street. very unfortunate accident. >> reporter: tonight police are obtaining a search warrant to search that dorm room here but right now there's no evidence to suggest foul play or suicide. this app% to have been just an accident but this investigation is still very much on going. as for the 44-year-old woman who was rushed to hahnemann university hospital tonight she

is listed in stable condition and she is expected to be okay. reporting live tonight in center city todd quinones cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> todd, thank you. gunfire on the streets of wilmington tonight. a traffic stop goes bad and police return fire shooting a suspect. this all happened on vanderver acts blocks from a pro police rally. natasha brown has more. >> reporter: swarms of officers respond a police involved shooting in wilmington. what began as routine traffic stop quickly escalated into much more shortly after 5:00 p.m. >> as the officers approached the vehicle struggle ensued with one of the passengers. at which point in time the officer were fired upon. at least one officer returned fire. >> one of the officers shot the suspect. his condition is unknown but both officers were not injured. this violence taking place

across town on the heels of a pro police rally in rodney square. dozens show their support for local law enforcement officers. this rally following marches around the country spawned by protestersprotesters upset by grand juries involving cases with police in ferguson missouri and new york. pastor derek johnson led one here in wilmington. >> there's antagonistic type of atmosphere right now and it needs to be dive fused. >> while the investigation into this police involved shooting residents just want to get beyond the crime scene tape and back into their homes shortly. >> maybe they need to go back to foot patrolling the neighborhoods. if you come out here after dark these days you taking a big risk. >> reporter: neighbors tell us crime has been escalate be in that community over the last several months or so. meantime the suspect involved in this police involved shooting remains at christiana hospital. his condition is unknown.

the two officers involved in the police involved shooting as is standard procedure have been placed on desk duty spend are pending the out come of this investigation at the wilmington police department natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". that shooting comes as u.s. attorney general eric holder was in philadelphia for a candid discussion on justice race and building community trust. holder met with local leaders at the us attorney's office today. this was his fifth stop in a national listening tour. the initiative is in response to protests over the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of white police officers. holder calls improving relations between minority communities and police departments a quote legacy item for the obama administration. >> the trust that exists in certain communities is real and we have to concede that. this is not something that is made up. it's not something that is a media invention. these are feelings that are real. >> being able to see things from a different perspective is

valuable to all of us. >> around two dozen people protested police brutality during holder's appearance. busy stretch of i-95 is still closed tonight after this deadly multi vehicle accident in bucks county. nearly 10 hours after that crash, northbound 95 is still closed between woodhaven and street roads in bensalem. the southbound side of in that area is only open in one lane. now 58-year-old paul miras was killed. he was driving a tractor trailer that hit another truck and caused chain row action crash. one truck lost its load of scrap metal. it all happened just south of street road and createed big rush hour delays. stay with "eyewitness news" in the morning. we'll bring you the latest on the traffic conditions. now "eyewitness news" exclusive. our conversation with the ex-boyfriend of erika crippen. the mt. laurel woman who is missing and presumed dead. her husband kyle crosby is now charged in her murder.

today baker spoke with "eyewitness news". he met erika crippen in high school. the two dated for almost a decade. and they have a seven-year-old daughter together named amirra. he says he's been hit hard by the news that crippen may be dead. and he is now focused on their daughter. >> i'm not stupid. she has an idea what's going on but we didn't give her like overall view of things because i don't know how she's going to take it. >> he says the couple's daughter a her rah will now live with him full time. authorities in belgium say they moved swift toll pre-empt what they call a major terrorist attack. police say two suspects during an anti terror operation today. officials say the group targeted in the raid may have had links with isis and was about to carry out a major terror attack against police stations. one suspect was arrested during a shoot out and belgium has raised its national security levels. more details are emerging about the ohio man who allegedly

immigration. them say the government mishandled this case and she should not be deported. the don tollefson trial will resume in bucks county tomorrow following health scare for the former sportscaster. recess had to be called today after tollefson who's diabetic said his blood sugar was too high. tollefson was taken to dollars town hospital to be checked out. he is charged with fraud accused of collecting money for bogus travel packages to sporting events. before the recess today, tollefson whose representing himself called members of the philadelphia eagles front office to the witness stan. the clean up is still on going in northeast philadelphia where things are pretty much frozen over thanks to a big water main break we first told you about last night. a broken pipe near blue grass road and grant of a sent water shooting into the air for more than 12 hours. and much of it turn to ice you see it there in the cold temperatures. the pipe carried water used for fighting fires not for reasonable use.

from fissures near ice land's largest grace cher. they have createed several new land formations tonight. according to nasa the lava field is roughly the size of the island of manhattan and it is the largest eruption since the 18th century. pope francis gets a rock star welcome for his first ever visit to the philippines and enormous crowd there cheered the holy father as he arrived in manila. the pope weighed in on the paris terror tax saying there are limits to freedom of expression especially when it and subtle someone's faith. officials expect up to 8 million people to attend a papal mass this sunday. tonight the pope is inspiring a south jersey girl and her brave fight against cancer. >> when a wish to meet the pontiff was granted this little girl discovered a whole new source of strength. rome where she and her brother were able to meet pope francis. >> he was so welcomeing and he was so -- he was so nice. he was very like we were a part of his familiarly. >> grace was diagnosed with neuroblastoma just over a year ago. doctors found tumor in her bones were she was just 10. she's now on her tenth round of team mow therapy. >> it's scary look you never know what's going to happen through any of this but oy feel like you just have to stay positive through it. >> the amount of tests the amount of blood work and transfusions and chemo and radiation and she's still smiles through it. >> it was her wish from the make a wish foundation to meet the pope. last month, she and her family flew to saint peter's square. they were able to get close enough to pope francis during his birthday mass. where gracie shook his hand and give him a birthday card she says the visit means so much because it's her faith that's

helped her through it all. >> i'm very big believer things happen for reason. if i wasn't diagnosed i wouldn't have had that opportunity. >> it's also been kind of empowering to see her overcoming all of the challenges and i feel like this whole experience as a whole is one big hurdle. >> grace started a foundation called cookie crumblies to help other kids fight cancer, too. >> i do feel like every kid in the hospital is the strongest human being out there. >> it's all the support these received from her friends and community that has helped her to stay' tough and she's looking to the pope's visit in september. diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> we hope to see you there gracie. >> president obama has signed a presidential memorandum allowing federal workers to take six weeks of advanced pay sick leave. that allows those workers to leave their jobs to care for a new child or a sick family member. the president said today the move could help millions of americans.

>> they've got kids or they've got an ailing parent juggling both doing right by their families and making a living can be tough. >> the president also called on the congress to pass what's call the healthy family's act which would grant all americans seven days year of paid sick time. he is expected to push that issue on tuesday during the state of the union address. the number of flu deaths in delaware this season has now climbed to 13. there were two deaths this week. all but one of the deceased is over 70 years old and all 13 had underlying conditions. today this season theres have been 15 hadn't dread lab confirmed flu cases in delaware and according to a government study released today this year's flu vaccine is only 23% effective. >> another blow to atlantic city today. caesars entertainment files for chapter 11 bankruptcy. the company owns bally's and caesars. and says it will be business as

usual for both casinos. caesars entertainment says that it is $18.5 billion in debt. well today at has annual state of the city address held at city sars, mayor don guardian said that the days of gaming reliance are over for atlantic city. but he is hopeful that caesars entertainment won't close the properties in town. >> we do not see a direct impact in atlantic city right now. we'll have to see what happens. we've got roll with what's going on. we've got to be prepared for the future. if we're going to have ones will casino we've got to figure out how to replace that. >> mayor guardian says that he's trying to lower property taxes and create new jobs by helping to developers working on new housing dining and shopping projects. well another big honor for philadelphia tonight and this time the city is being highlighted for its amazing shopping. >> traveler magazine has ranked philadelphia as the second best international shopping destination ranged only behind

20s. nothing homemade. nothing from mother nature. you can see on storm scan3 staying mainly clear tonight and snow showers that are sitting over new york and headed toward new england will stay to the north. so we do not even get a little piece of that. but we will see some wind from that clipper. our "eyewitness weather" watchers are saying it is a cold night and mainly clear skies across the region. right now the temperature is only 24 degrees we known inform kathy says not much wind tonight there. little bit farther to the north and to the west, gary says in warminster 23 degrees. and here's one of the coldest temperatures i can find. chief chuck pressler says a cold night with a testimony cher of only 18 degrees. in delaware little bit milder sitting at 28 degrees. jason is reporting in middletown a little bit of wind right now out of the south and out of the west but definitely a clear sky across the region. take look at these temperatures. locally in philadelphia it's 30 degrees. in dover we have 28. 24 in lang caster but the cold

is pretty much everywhere. we have a high pressure system that is keeping us cold. 28 degrees in state college. pittsburgh at 29 and cleveland sitting at their degrees. the area of snow is because of this a weak clipper system with the core of the snow well to the north. but we see a front moving through associated with this and that will kick up the wind tomorrow. so, yes, we'll have the sun yes, temperatures will be seasonal about 40 degrees, but the wind kicking up at about 30 miles an hour at times as far as the gusts are concerned will make it feel colder than that. don't be deceased by that sunshine and that temperature. saturday in the wake of that front colder with temperatures only around 30 degrees. and and that we warm it up nicely for sunday but guess what a one-day warm up. temperatures well into the 40s but we'll watch this area of low pressure and depending on its exact track will determine how much rain we get. right now our european model is saying we'll see at least an inch of rain and maybe some wind out of this thing. our gfs model is saying not so much. i think the gfs will be coming
