are being blamed for this deadly pileup on i-76 at the gulph mills exit. this massive morning accident in montgomery county involved about 60 vehicles. one person was killed, 30 more injured. it was hours before all lanes of the schuylkill expressway were back open. >> meantime two other drivers were killed in this accident on the blue route. a tractor-trailer jackknifed there causing drivers to be stuck for hours as crews tried clear that icy road way. >> we're also following a developing story. several shots fired from a speeding vehicle outside vice president joe biden's delaware home. was it a ran doom act or a targeted attack? >> but we will begin with the weather today. officials across the area taking to social media warning the public to stay off the roads. good afternoon to you, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live in gulph mills with the latest from the scene. david. >> reporter: jessica i heard from state police about 20 minutes ago the victim

identified at 31-year-old eric blaugh. he was driving westbound about 6:30. he and some other cars got into an accident, his car was not working anymore. he got out of his car was hit and killed. the pileup began lasting for hours. emergency crews rushed to the scene where dozens of cars were twisted and turned in every direction. as the sun came up, the enormity of the pileup became clear. >> it was just a big load of cars a lot of mayhem and chaos going on. >> reporter: colleen graves tells "eyewitness news" she was stuck about a mile behind the pileup for several hours. >> i saw a lot of people just not paying attention, driving away too quick. >> reporter: state police officials say one person died about 30 suffered injuries. some were treater on the scene. others taken to local hospitals for observation. >> 10 minutes later it was a bunch of calls piled up everywhere so i had to take the back way.

>> reporter: driver devon gates says video likeness hard to watch. >> it's horrible. i've been out here since 7:00. >> reporter: salt trucks cleared to opponent westbound lanes several hours after the pileup began. as temperatures increase ice melted turning the attention to the side streets t things back to normal on the schuylkill at exit 330. just spoke to somebody with penndot a few minutes agoly he tells me the best thing to do, just be careful and i though black ice has melted. slush can still abproblem. we're reporting from state police. the victim that died 31-year-old eric blaugh. we're in montgomery county, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> david thank you, two people are dead after another fatal accident in our area. these was in broomall delaware county along the blue route. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is on the scene where traffic finally is getting back to normal there.

steve. >> reporter: jessica, all lanes of the blue route back opened this afternoon but for a good five hours southbound was shut down only cbs3 on the ground as crews started removing pieces avenue horrifying accident. we spoke to drivers who witnessed it all. even for a few minutes, it is hard to look at. cars mangled sliced in half where drivers once sat behind the wheel. >> it's pretty horrific. >> reporter: stuck in its wake this commuter spent five hours staring at it but she counts herself lucky. >> i was kind of shaken up. it easily could have been me. >> reporter: patel was on her way to work at a nearby hospital at about 7:30 this morning. then she along with dozens driving southbound on the blue route in broomall forced into a harrowing moment. >> i started pumping my brakes. >> reporter: ahead three cars slaming into a jackknifed

tractor-trailer killing two drivers. >> we feel very fortunate that we weren't involved in it. it's just pure luck. >> reporter: the accident is under investigation but when drivers started getting out of their cars, the sensation was instant. >> we didn't realize it but after we got stopped we got out and there was literally an ice skate out here on the road. >> reporter: five hours stuck without knowing what's next may look like a headache but seeing what's just up ahead it felt like a relief. >> so, we have to wait several hours but that's better than the alternative if we were involved. >> reporter: authorities are also tilings about a number of injuries sustained by the survivors in this case but the conditions so far are not known as the investigation remains in place. reporting live from delaware county i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, just a terrible morning there on the blue route, steve thank you very much. at least four cars were involved in this crash on i-95 southbound nearly a gain. iwitness cameras there shortly after 7 o'clock this morning.

state police tell us that they did treat several patients as a result of this but luckily there were no major injuries. now, we also spoke with penndot press secretary jean blaum today about what happened with all the roadways this morning. >> you have a flash freeze situation that happens when you had precipitation hitting the cold pavement. obviously our trucks were out salting but there may be areas where the trucks haven't covered yet and that's what's most likely was the case in several areas and that is upon the water hitting the cold pavement. on impact you had instantaneous ice form. it was the most difficult winter precipitation to deal with during the winter. >> a storm of circumstance combining this morning. this was a familiar scene in intersections across our area. "eyewitness news" at the 33rd and girard in the brewerytown section of philadelphia. drivers had to take it slow there navigating through high

water. one area had to be roped off until the water receded later in the day. association the rain is still moving. there was let's find -- moving through. let's find out what's happening. kathy orr is in the weather center. >> what a mess indeed. we still have some lingering showers but this morning's setup was a recipe for disaster as we saw on some area roads. we had high pressure to the north. as you can see on our surface map and that created an issue because it gave us very cold temperatures during the overnight period. wie we have that approaching storm and what normally happens is as the storm rides up the eastern seaboard we get condition that is slowly improve because warmer air moves in and change that is over to rain fairly quickly but that was not the case as the cold air stayed in place longer than expected and hence we saw this freezing rain. now, i want to show you the radar from early this morning. the precipitation came in between about 7:00 a.m. and

ate eight. a you can seat pink, that's frozen precipitation. the cold air at the surface hung tough and that warm air rode up and over it finally changing over to rain but not until about 11:00 a.m. through the philadelphia area. you can see that icy mix right along the i-95 corridor and extending through the lehigh valley but it was there for about four hours and it came down heavily. this is what happened in the atmosphere. you see the cold air well aloft. precipitation started falling as a snowflake. we anticipated the warm lane it changes over to rain but what happened is the cold air at the surface remained and it took a long time to get that warm air to the surface. so, any precipitation that falls freezes on contact and that is freezing rain or ice. and then as the morning progressed the warm layer made it to the surface and then everything finally changed to rain but that took a much longer time than anticipated and now we're seeing some rain showers across the delaware valley fairly light in nature but some heavy amounts between one and 2-inches of rain

across the philadelphia area. we still have flood warnings. area streams, creeks and rivers are flowing very high. conditions on roads are slowly improving. let's get right to meteorologist justin drabick. he's in a live mobile weather lab with the very latest in new castle county, delaware. good afternoon justin. >> reporter: hey kathy that's right. looks like the steady rain has ended for the most part. still get something light showers here in new castle but this is one spot that typical problems with flooding after a heavy rain event. low lying area. we're right near the christina river. this is mal reroad in new castle delaware. lot of ponding on the road. check this out as we approach this 1 yard you can see ahead that's totally flooded. again low lying spots. this is going to be an issue the the christina river is above flood stage in some spots. expected to crest about a foot above the flood stage later this evening so additional flooding is possible. it wasn't just yards that

flooded earlier today. check this video out from newark delaware. flooded roadways in many spots and the cars you just got to be careful. you got to go through these puddle areas slowly. maybe just turn around because you don't know how deep that water s luckily it wasn't too deep and these cars could make it through. let's go to the graphics and talk about what's expected the rest of the evening. the heaviest rain has ended. watching for poor drainage flooding. small streams and creeks on the rise. rainfall amounts up to 2-inchs in some spots. colder temperatures so standing water could refreeze so watch out for black ice early in the morning. bring you back here tot with the cbs3 mobile weather lab. ponding on the roads, most of the heavy rain has stopped. that's the latest here in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. more updates coming up. back you to chris in the studio. >> peak tow tells us there are about 700 outages in the area. at airport delays of about 45

minutes. check with your airline if you're flying out or picking someone else. regional rail service is on time or close to schedule. some trolley routes and shuttle buses are taking detours because of high waters on the road. you can track the weather any tomato like if you download the cbsphilly weather a it is available for you free of charge on both itunes and google play. >> developing now multiple gun shots fired outside the greenville delaware home of vice president joe biden. matt rivers is live outside the new castle county police department with the latest on this investigation. matt. >> reporter: jess today, the the -- jessica the secret service tells us neither the vice president or mrs. biden were home yesterday evening. the secret service agents that were home at the time reported hearing those shots and say they immediately tightened security at the compound. meanwhile officers from the new castle county police department and the fbi responded to the scene.

their joint investigation still very active this evening. iwitness cameras rolling at the vice president home along barley mill road showing the ongoing investigation. a dawn its handler check a vehicle, a sign of tight security at the compound made even tighter today. shortly before 8:30 friday night several gun shots were fired from a car speeding down the main public road outside the house. police responded. the area was locked down. and officers went house to house looking for any suspects. none were located and a day later investigators combed the grounds looking for any evidence. shorterly after the shooting, new castle county police arrested a man who tried to drive around their police paremeter. a senior secret service official says that man is being questioned to see if he has any can connection to the shooting but at this point it appears they are separate incidents. in a law and force. official tells cbs news that

the pistol -- a law enforcement official tells cbs news that it is believed those shots were fired from a pistol from inside that car that of course part of this ongoing investigation. it is not yet known whether the shooter was actually aiming for the road or just firing into the airport. the vice president's home sits hundred yards off the area of the roadway where that shooting occurred. we're live outside of police headquarters in new castle county delaware, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> matt, thank you. the ohio man charged with plotting an attack on the u.s. capitol is moved to a kentucky prison. 20-year-old christopher cornell is being held without bail. the u.s. marshall service says cornell was moved out of state after a court appearance friday. authorities say cornell planned to attack the capital with pipe bombs and shoot government officials. >> well, still ahead on this special edition of "eyewitness news" at 5 o'clock talk about lucky. find out how this man and his truck got wedged between two tractor-trailers and how he

>> just an ugly day out there as you can see from this iwitness cam video sent in by susan. this is strawbridge lake in moorestown. you see a mystique rainy and in many places icy day. kathy will have her updated forecast in just about five minutes. chris. >> no two ways about it, it was a very nasty morning out there and we got firsthand reports from outside via twitter and the hashtag cbs3 storm. allen mark for instance wrote in to say that he was on a very icy sidewalk. you can see him sliding there. he points out he is not wearing heely's, that that is in fact ice. bobby smith using hashtag cbs3 storm wrote in to let us know he had been stuck at this point for about an hour on the westbound walt whitman. you can see why. very little visibility here. we hope bobby was able to get off the bridge sooner rather than later. john fisk writing in saying people need to slow down you can see why. a couple cars on the side of the road. this one looks like it has pun

a flat he discovered it didn't come with a spare advertisement it had this pump instead. >> did you even think to ask if there was a spare in there. >> no. i automatically assumed a spare came with the car. >> reporter: your reaction when you see a pump? >> what do i do. >> reporter: that's a question many americans may be asking. according to aaa every major automaker is building some cars without a standard spare advertisement about 150 models in the past few years. some luxury cars don't have a spare or pump. they are equipped with run flat tires which can be driven to a repair shop without air. the auto companies are making cars lighter to meet new fuel economy standards. >> they're trying to shave every pounds off a vehicle. when you can eliminate a spare tine nut an inflater kit in your trunk that savers a fairly significant amount of weight. >> reporter: the do you think the dealer should have told you there wasn't a spare. >> i think so. >> reporter: rogers used the

>> our eyewitness weather watchers are telling us temperatures have been rising throughout the afternoon. right now 41 degrees reported in wenonah where they picked up at least an inch of rain today. kathy is saying still seeing some rainy conditions with temperatures that are more comfortable than they were early this morning. we'll take it to our northern

and western suburbs in philadelphia in pennsylvania. kyle saying the temperature right now 39 degrees. still seeing that rain over an inch reported in hatboro. so some improving conditions there as well as the rain comes to an end and we'll take it to the north in quakertown. bob is saying 36 degrees. the wind out of the north and east at about 4 miles an hour. over an inch of rain and of course we have to be very weary of our suburbs and even the city overnight tonight as conditions could refreeze as temperatures fall below freezing. let's take a look at some of these rain amounts through our eyewitness weather watchers. sharon says isn't inn gloucester township over 2-inches of rain. steven in robbinsville, new jersey 1.9 bob in quakertown 1222. 1.2-inchsinchs in landon burg pa. can earns for flooding where there are streams or creeks. if you want to be an eyewitness weather watcher please join the team. we anticipate more wintry events next couple of months. go to cbsphilly.com/watchers

to sign up. on storm scan3 we're looking at some lingering showers and down the shore in ocean city skycam3 showing foggy conditions. the rain still hanging on, even though the heaviest is lifted towards the northeast. so, fog will be an issue for some of us overnight tonight. you can see the rain lifting through parts of ocean county and toward monmouth county but still some leftover moisture through philadelphia, south jersey and even in our suburbs to the north and west. rivers and creeks running high. in pemberton an issue along the rancocas where minor flooding is being observed at this point. the streams to watch pennypack in philadelphia, christiana chester creek in chester. temperatures around the region well above freezing through philadelphia, south and east. close to freezing in reading and lancaster. an town 37. the poconos 36. so everyone going below freezing overnight with some icy concerns. as this storm pull asway the

difference in pressure between that storm and fair weather building in creates pressure gradient or windy conditions. so, monday temperatures will rise through the 30's but winds will be gusting to 30 miles an hour making it feel blustery and much colder. tuesday temperatures in the 30's as well and then we watch a clipper going to our south bringing a chance of a rain or wet snow shower on wednesday. that's the next chance of precipitation. so, through the evening, heavy rain will be ending. watch for ice later as temperatures fall to around 31 in the city, colder in our suburbs, 39 tomorrow, partly sunny and blustery and on the exclusive eyewitness weather forecast, check this out. for our three-day tomorrow 39. tuesday looking for a temperature of 39. morning temperatures only in the 20's and then wednesday looking for our next chance of a rain or wet snow shower but it doesn't look like there will be anything heavy at this point. next half hour we'll talk about the seven-day forecast and in any change that is may come. >> all right, kathy, keeping an eye on awful this. thanks so much. >> thanks, kathy.

>> ♪ >> tonight two people are dead, multiple people have been injured as a tractor-trailer jackknifes on 476 in broomall delaware county. this happened around 7:30. three cars slammed into that truck. the wreck created a traffic backup that's lasted more than five hours. icy conditions on the road are being blamed for that crash.

>> pretty icy this morning. it was an ice skate. we didn't realize it but after we got stopped we got out and it was literally an ice skate out here on the roads. >> the blue route reopened just before 1 o'clock this afternoon. >> one person was killed and 30 more injured in this pileup on i-76 at gulph mills in montgomery county. the first vehicles crashed just before 7:00 this morning but it was so icy brakes alone weren't enough to stop the cars behind them. the westbound lanes were shut down as first responders tended to the injured and road crews worked to clear the roughly 60 crashed vehicles. even drivers who didn't crash were left stranded. >> from new york going through new jersey and into pennsylvania. i saw a lot of people just not paying attention. driving away too quick. >> slippery. it was like the worse. drove into philly driving slowly. >> the schuylkill expressway opened after 2:00 noon. it's been quite a day for drivers with the ice on the roads and also the flooding

rains we've had. >> the question is will our wet roads refreeze overnight. let's get to meteorologist kathy orr standing by in the weather center. >> the bad news is yes. temperatures are going to fall below freezing and we're going to have some significant issues. let's take a look at storm scan3 and i'll show you what's going on here. we're talking about conditions that are going to improve as far as the heavy rain is concerned. but then we have that cold air that's going to be building back in. and you can see we have one more band of precipitation that will be pushing through philadelphia. this will be skirting through wilmington, philadelphia and even into south jersey within the next hour or so but through lower providence, west goshen, towards upper darby, that's where we're seeing some moderate rain falling. but the heaviest is moving off shore right now. that's the good news. so, visibility is becoming a little bit of an issue here. in dover half mile visibility being recorded, less than 2 miles in millville. let's take a closer look at

suburbs, mount holly 1.3 miles visibility. look at these rain amounts. between one and 2-inches of rain. newport, smyrna, philadelphia nearly 2-inches, medford 1.6 mount holly over an inch of rain and that was the problem with area roads as far as the ponding is concerned and our streams and creeks running very high, even though the rain is going to be ending, those concerns will continue. conditions on area roads have improved somewhat but the there is still some standing water. let's get out there. meteorologist justin drabick is live with the cbs3 mobile weather lab in newark new castle county, delaware. hi justin. >> hey, good evening kathy. that's right, actually the rain has picked up a little bit here in newark, delaware, right now and we did run into some low lying flooding in some spots especially in the town of new castle but this is old baltimore pike. right now we're actually passing over the christina river as we speak right now and that's one river that is flooding right now. it's expected to crest about 1

foot above flood stage. so, any of the low lying spots along the christina river, if you live there, you obviously know that could be a problem as well with possible flooding coming in later on tonight. that is expected to crest right around 6 o'clock. so again old baltimore pike, the rain has picked up a little bit. temperature right now still well above freezing. we're at 41 degrees. but let's talk about that potential later on tonight for black ice as temperatures dip down again below freezing so we're seeing a lot of standing water around especially in your yards, your driveways, on the side of the roads. just be careful as that surface refreeze through the overnight. so again untreated icy spots just watch early tomorrow morning. all right, want to bring you back here in newark, delaware, right now old baltimore pike where the rain has picked up again and just watch out for the ponding on the roads and again some of the smaller streams and creeks are slowly on the rise. some improvement later on overnight. but again, you're going have to watch for those icy spots. that's the latest here in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. we'll sends it back to you

guys in the studio. >> justin thanks so much. the sheet of slippery ice made travel so treacherous in some parts today some drivers were actually wishing for snow. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury caught up with commuters in montgomery county who found it hard just getting out of their front doors. >> it was horrible. >> reporter: it's horrible? >> absolutely horrible. >> reporter: that's just one of the many terms folks used to describe the weather. drivers in king of prussia had a tough time navigating the local streets during sunday morning's icy storm. >> i got off at the gulph mills exit and the whole thing was black ice. they salted it but if it wasn't for the penndot employees, it would have been bad. >> reporter: the icy conditions made it even harder for drivers to get to their car without slipping. >> i slipped coming out of my front door actually this morning on the marble steps. >> when we came out to start the car, we were slipping so we were very careful. >> reporter: and you know it's bad when drivers are wishing for snow rather than this icy weather. >> snow is better than this. ice is a bad thing.

all you have to do is use the hashtag cbs3 storm. >> a water main breaks in the northeast not far from the i-95 off-ramp in tacony. crews rushed to state road and long shore avenue just after 5:00 this morning. that water began to freeze making conditions slick for the workers there. we're told no homes or businesses were affected. the water is back on at the lowes hotel in center city. that hotel temporarily shut off its power and took guests to the lobby after a 12-inch water main broke last night causing water to fill the basement. several other properties near 12 and. market were also without water until repairs were completed. >> well, developing story at this hour. the secret service says that several gun shots were fired outside of vice president joe biden's delaware home. officials say the bidens were not there at the time of the shooting on saturday night. secret service personnel recorder seeing a vehicle driving past the home at a high rate of speed and then about 30 minutes later they say that a driver tried to

>> an unbelievable picture coming to us from oregon tonight. a chain reaction crash left a man trapped between two trucks. but amazingly this man survived. this is 27 year old caleb whitby. he was involvedly in a 26 car pileup on i84 on saturday. he was able to walk away from the wreck with just a few bruises and scratches. about a dozen people were hurt but no one died in that crash. >> countries across europe remain on high alert. the fight against terror is ever evolving and the sheer number of people involved is a

he knows the game almost better than anyone. what does he think about the afc championship matchup. >> i think when you get to this game you're going to bring out the best in both of these teams because they are clutch performers, they are great quarterbacks. i have seen such an improvement in andrew luck. i was thinking earlier in the season he's overrated. he's not as great as everybody thinks he is. yes, he is. i saw him early in the season on the monday night, second week of the season when i thought he was outplayed by nick foles but he has just gotten better and better and better. and the game he played against denver showed him at his absolute peek. as far as the patriots are concerned, lesley, you're talking about the greatest coach in the game today in bell belichick. he finds ways to win. you're talking about one of the greatest quarterbacks

us. we thank you. we're looking at temperatures across most of the region. sharon is reporting a temperature of 40 degrees in gloucester township, over 2-inches of rain there. generally between one and 2-inches even through south jersey. we'll go down the shore where temperatures are in the mid 40's so those are warmer spots. greg reporting a temperature of 46 degrees and right now we're looking at conditions that are slowly improving down there as well. 44 degrees down through cape may county and temperatures that will be slowly falling overnight tonight. let's take a look at a few of our pictures. we have a picture right here reported in from greg. let's see what he brought us. come on, greg, we want to see your picture. where is your picture greg? oh, well, all right, we'll check it out where charles is showing us down the shore. cape may courthouse you can see calm and clearing with a few breaks in the clouds there. so, improving conditions down the shore, which is what we like to see and kathy is reporting in a few breaks in the clouds in wenonah. so, south jersey seeing a little bit of that. the rest of us will be seeing

that a little bit later on this evening because more rain is coming in from the west. let's take a look outside and show you what else is going on. our eyewitness weather watchers around the clock, if you would like to join, go to cbsphilly.com/watchers. rain moving through right now with that next batch. this is our live skycam3 in camden looking across the river. on storm scan3 you can see the heaviest rain, those oranges and yellows are finally moving off shore. they were in atlantic county, southern parts of burlington county and even through ocean and monmouth and now we're seeing one last batch moving to our suburbs and making its way to the i-95 corridor. you see the yellows and oranges heading through 295 toward the north. definitely along 95 through philadelphia areas of upper darby, even through drexel hill seeing some heavy rain, abington and this will be moving east before everything finally comes to an end. let's look at these doppler radar estimate amounts because where you see the yellow, that's where we have our heavier amounts. see in woodbine over an inch of rain, millville nearly two

bridgeton nearly 2-inches, wilmington 1.6. in philadelphia reporting 1.77. i want to thank our iwitness cam folks as well because mark reed has sent this in from mount laurel and this is her front yard, a retention basin and that is filled with water so it just goes to show how much of this has been falling throughout the afternoon and it's going to linger even when the rain is gone, the flooding will continue. our rivers and creeks not too many problems at this point but you can see the rancocas at pemberton minor flooding going on there. the flood warnings have been extended because those rivers and creeks and streams are still running high in many locations. so a flood warning along the i-95 corridor, adjacent suburbs, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, until 11:30 tonight. so, that is new information. right now temperatures well above freezing. reading and lancaster close to freezing. we are going to cool down everywhere overnight. our storm moves a away. tomorrow turns blustery, winds

blurting to 30. tuesday another clipper slides to the south bringing a chance of a wet snow shower on wednesday. overnight rain ends but we have to watch for ice as temperatures fall to 31 in the city colder in there suburbs. tomorrow partly sunny and blustery. temperatures in the 30's but with those gusts it will feel like it's in the 20's and on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, 39 on tuesday, 37 wednesday and then it turns colder again. after that clipper, temps in the mid 30's thursday and friday even saturday looking quiet and then next sunday we'll keep an eye on a chance of a rain or wet snow shower again. but no major storms in sight. i think after this morning we need a real quiet break. >> no doubt about it. no major improvement there is but i think we're all glad to put this day behind us. it's been rough out there. >> yeah, it's been very sad and tragic with the accidents this morning and freezing rain is the worst type of winter precipitation, so hopefully that's gone for awhile. >> so dangerous. thank you kathy. >> thanks. >> here's what's coming up on cbs3 at 6 o'clock a-special
