a nasty mix of rain and freezing temperatures causing problems for millions of drivers. forecasters are warning of more frozen road this morning after a series of deadly crashes. in custody, a teenage couple accused of a multi-state crime spree are arrested after eded hundreds of miles from their kentucky home. and a touchdown. unstoppable. >> and a super showdown is in the works. the new england patriots travel while the packers learn the hard way. >> toward the end zone. it is caught. seattle's going to the super

bowl. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday january 19th 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. if you're hitting the roads in the northeast this morning, beware. freezing rain is expected in northern new england the same conditions that caused treacherous driving conditions yesterday. the icy roadways led to crashes that caused at least five deaths. in philadelphia one person died when up to 50 cars were involved in a massive car pileup. two others died when they slammed into a jackknifed tractor-trailer. >> we feel very fortunate we weren't involved in it. it's just pure luck. i think all of us who are sitting here so we have to wait several hours, but that's better than the alternative if we were involved. >> drivers said when they got

out of their cars they realized they were driving on a sheet of ice. black ice is caused to be the cause of a chain reaction pileup in eernl gone. it happened saturday morning. 26 cars and trucks were involved and 12 were injured. it took most of the day to clear the wreck stranding several cars and trucks. one man in the oregon crash is very, very lucky. caleb's truck was crushed between two tractor-trailers. he was trapped for around 30 minutes but when he was pulled out all he need was a few band-aidaids and some ice. he has to thank god and now he has to go figure out why. at least three separate fires burned more than 2,000 acres and destroyed several buildings. they were fueled by low humidity and high winds. the fires also forced the temporary closure of a highway. this morning european union

ministers are meeting in brussels to discuss the home grown threat of islamic mill tansy. the alert follows from the attacks in paris and fallout from the attacks in paris have spread. good morning, lauren. they're holding nine people in connection with the paris assault on the supermarket. it sparked an anti-terrorism crackdown in at least four european countries resulting in dozens of arrests. security is ramped up across europe. in belgium where a suspected plot to attack police last week hundreds of soldiers are protecting high-profile targets. >> i think it's justified with all that's happening right now and actually it makes me feet kind of secure. >> in france the two brothers who attacked the newspaper "charlie hebdo" were buried in anonymous graves.

an anti-islamic rally in france was banned and one planned for germany today was called off. in pakistan they'll demonstrated against the blasphemous cartoons. >> every time we draw a cartoon of god we defend the freedom of religion, we declare that god must not be a political or public figure. >> the paris attacks were carried out by so-called home grown terrorists which senator marco rubio said is a growing and more dangerous threat to europe and the united states. >> they've been radicalized around local mosques and they've received instructions and/or inspirations on how to carry out these attacks in the west from online platforms. >> now, in france 22,000 police and soldiers have been deployed to thwart another attack.

lauren? >> don champion in new york. thank you, don. multiple shots were fired saturday night near the house. biden and his wife were not at home at the time. the house is located several hundred yards from the main road where the shots were fired. the secret service heard the shots and saw the vehicle drive past the home at a high rate of speed. president obama delivers the state of the union address tomorrow. he'll call for raising taxes on the wealthiest americans, something that won't sit well with the republican controlled congress. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> good morning lauren. that's just one of many proposals the president will make tomorrow night, and he'll make them fully cognizant of the fact that they won't see the light of day with this new congress. president obama hunkered down at the white house over the weekend working with his speech writer on his sixth state of the union address. >> they're the americans i'm working for everyday. >> in his weekly address, we got a preview of what's to come.

>> how to build on our momentum with rising wages, growing income and a stronger senior class. >> he disclosed some details on saturday saying the president will unveil plans to reform the tax code by raising the capital gains rate on wealthy americans, eliminate the trust fund loophole. the government would use the $320 billion generated over ten years to fund free college tuition for some students and some middle-class tax credits. >> i think we should have a debate and see if we can come to an agreement on the things we do agree on. >> it's quite clear many of the president's proposals will be dead on arrival here on capitol hill with the republicans now controlling both houses of congress. >> raising taxes on people that are successful is not going to make those struggling more successful. >> the president talked about more increases for workers and

face charges in a multi-state crime spree. police say their string of of crime spree started in kentucky and continued through carolina and georgia. it continued in florida where they were extradited to kentucky. >> reporter: police in panama beach, florida, took 18-year-old dalton hayes along with his 13-year-old girlfriend cheyenne phillips into custody without incident. they found the kentucky teens sleeping in a pickup truck originally stolen in georgia. >> they weren't sure if anyone was in it. they sent an unmarked car and they saw the brake lights on. >> reporter: authorities say the couple stole three vehicles during a crime spree that began earlier this month in kentucky. they fled two days before hayes was to appear in court on burglary and theft charges. while on the run they were spotted in a south carolina walmart where police say they used stolen checks.

they're concerned the fugitives were armed because they found a handgun in one of the vehicles. hayes said phillips told her she was 19. he was in love with her by the time he found out she was 13. authorities plan to extradite them back to kentucky to face burglary, theft, and other charges. omar villafranca, cbs news. still to come why some drivers will pay higher gas prices. first they punch their text to a second straight super bowl and it was thanks to an improbable finish.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. football fans can only hope super bowl xlix can match the drama and competitiveness of sunday's nfc championship game. the green bay packers take a 16-0 lead over the seahawks thanks three interception from seattle quarterback russell wilson but the defending super bowl champs don't go down without a fight. they cut the lead to five with just two minutes to play. then they get the ball back when they recover an onside kick. the seahawks score their second touchdown in less than a minute and take the lead for the first time in the game. green bay is able to send the game to overtime with a last-minute field goal but they never get the ball back.

pro golfer robert alanlenby is recovering after he was kidnapped. he said he was beaten and robbed but he does not remember exactly what happened. he woke up in a park more than suction miles away from where he was taken. he says he's happy to be alive. gas prices in the u.s. are at five-year lows. prices at the pump have fallen 41 cents since december 18th. the national average is now $2.07 for a regular gallon of gas, but as jill wagner reports drivers in some parts of the country are paying a lot more than others. >> reporter: recent college graduate says every time she fills up her gas tank lately it costs less. gas prices have fallen by more than a dollar from a year ago. >> i'm saving 20 30 bucks.

yeah, it's really good. >> she pays more than drivers in texas or new jersey. >> prices can vary significantly from place to place. >> reporter: there are several reasons why gas prices can vary from state to state. aaa says more than half of the cost is for crude oil. add to that the federal gas tax, 18.4 cents a gallon. and then state taxes. new jersey and alaska have the low evidence chld hawaii, pennsylvania, and new york have some of the highest. drivers also pay for transportation and shipping which is why americans living near oil refineries which turn the crude into usable gasoline will pay a lot less at the gas pump. >> if you live along the u.s. gulf coast you find your prices cheapest. >> now we just have to keep it

a program in washington trains veterans for business careers. as jim axleelrod reports, a state-of-the-art bakery is at the center of their education. >> reporter: welcome to the dog tag bakery now open in washington, d.c.,after eight years of planning and prayer. >> i never gave up because i knew this was a good work. >> reporter: founder rick curry had the prayer part covered. as for secular sources this jesuit priest partnered up with a real estate mogul connie epstein. >> he's the jesuit father and i'm the jewish godmother. >> reporter: both wanted to help those returning from iraq and
