"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch live at the girard college one of the biggest service sites anywhere in the the nation justin. >> reporter: that is right chris. today was a day on across the region from delaware to new jersey, here in pennsylvania organizers were bracing for 135,000 volunteers, and 5,000 of them gathered here at girard college today. at the girard college armory there were drums for those who wanted music and for those wanting dance, there was a beat. and for all there was a purpose, put forth by doctor martin luther king, junior whose legacy lives on as a national the day of public

service. >> doctor king said everyone can be great bay anyone can serve. >> reporter: twenty year ago todd bernstein organized the king day of service for greater fail area with just about 1,000 volunteers. today, five times have filled the girard gym for some 150 events. a record number of 135,000 volunteers were expected to serve in some 1800 local events. >> we're making a difference and it is good we may get back to the community one day every year. >> reporter: those two decorated voting booths an homage to the 50th anniversary of the voting rights act which doctor king for the for. some volunteers gave their time to register voters. >> it is the service to our ancestors and all of the people that walked for many years for us to have the right to vote report mayor nutter led hundred or so volunteers to make election day signs printed in several languages used in local race necessary

doctor king was hosted by rowan university in grass bureau today this is 29th annual martin luther king junior scholarship breakfast with all proceeding toward scholarships for students who need financial assistance this years keynote speaker was michael eric dyson a best selling author, scholar and cultural expert. sylvia burrwell of the department of u.s. health ape human services made a stop in philadelphia today. she attended a mlk event at the kline wellness center hosted by project home, an organization that helps local homeless people. afterwards she also spoke about the affordable care act, and the upcoming deadline to enroll by february the 15th. also president obama and the first lady took sometime off today to color, with children at the the boys and girls club of greater washington. they talk about the legacy of doctor martin luther king junior and why his work continues to inspire people after so many years. well, day before he is sworn into office pennsylvania's governor elect

to diminish, come this evening, and into the overnight. yes, we are expecting some snow showers but tomorrow we will catch a break before that moves in. the high temperature today in philadelphia rosa above normal believe it or not. the we will make it to 45 degrees. average high is 40, for this time of the year. across the region right now we're looking at temperatures comfortable 43 in the city, 39 in allentown and reading, millville and wildwood, right now 30 degrees in the poconos. this evening, temperatures will slowly fall through the 30's, with cloudy skies, through 9:00 p.m., by 11:00 o'clock it will be partly cloudy. we will be watching a clipper moving quickly toward the region bringing some rain and some snow to the delaware valley, south jersey and delaware. coming up, we will talk with what to expect the next couple of days, but first, not quite as cold and then details of the snow, and arctic air is returning for the end of the month. more on that coming up later in the broadcast. thanks so much kathy.

developing right now a vehicle reportedly involved in the hit and run crashed into a home that is in pottstown. officials say, this vehicle traveled for about a mile at a high rate of speed before slamming into a home on the 400 block of hanover street. you can see the curtains swinging in the breeze there where the window used to be. police were on the scene investigating just afternoon time, so far there are no reports of any injuries. well, one person is dead after a fire breaks out inside of a montgomery county apartment complex. it happened about 4:30 this morning. investigators say they have found a body inside one of the units at the linwood gardens apartments, in cheltenham township. >> wonderful, safe place to live and i was so or toy hear that someone, a person expired. >> fire crews continued to work for most of the morning smoldering debris around the building. the name has in the been released as of this hour.

six people are unaccounted for after a fire in maryland destroys a 16,000 square foot mansion. the fire broke out at 3:30 this morning in annapolis. fire officials have not been able to get in touch with the residents of the home but unclear if they were inside at the time. it is in the clear what caused the fire but it has caused several million-dollar in damage. bizarre store friday northern california where a man, stuck in a dumpster survives, even have after being dumped in a landfill. >> but this happened near sacramento, man says he jumped in the dumpster to look for his wallet which he lost. truck came along emptying the trash along with him. three hours later he was dumped out at the landfill to survive in the back of the garbage truck. he said he used wooden planning to create a pocket around him. suffered only minor injuries.
