interview president obama. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday january 23rd, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the nfl's investigation into charges that the new england patriots used underinflated footballs in the afc championship game could wrap up as early as today. the patriots' coach and quarterback deny any involvement. bill belichick and tom brady say they don't know why 11 of 12 patriots game balls used last sunday were underinflated. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: the new england patriots used some familiar plays in the blame game over underinflated footballs. at his morning footballs, coach bill belichick handed off to tom brady. >> tom's personal preferences on his footballs are something that he can talk about in much better

detail. >> i didn't alter the ball in any way. >> reporter: brady says he has no idea what happened to the game balls after he approved them before sunday's championship game. >> i don't want anyone touching the balls after that i don't want anyone rubbing them putting any air in them taking air out. to me the balls are perfect and that's what i expect when i show up on the field. >> reporter: so brady punted. >> i don't have an explanation for it. i don't know what happened to it. really until monday morning i have no idea what happened to the balls. >> reporter: after sunday's game 11 of the 12 balls were under pressure. they can be easier to grip and catch, especially in cold rainy weather. belichick has tried trick plays before. in 2007 he was find half a million dollar after the patriots were caught videotaping another team's signals. this time belichick says he did

nothing wrong. >> i can't think of anything they would have done differently based on what i knew then based on what i know now. >> what was surprising to me in that press conference yesterday was the fact that when someone asked him had the league contacted you yet to talk about the investigation, he said no. >> reporter: but, he added he knows more now about nfl pressure rules than ever before. >> i've learned more about this process in the last three days than i knew or talked about it in the last four years that i've coached this league. >> reporter: omar villafranca, cbs news. well this morning the first significant winter storm is making its way up the atlantic seaboard. major cities along the i-95 corridor from philadelphia to boston are expected to get a mix of snow sleet, and rain by tomorrow morning. the exact tract of the storm will determine how much snow but some areas can expect 7 inches or more and substantial travel

issues. the same travel system spread rain and snow to a large part of texas and new mexico yesterday. in the houston area up to 4 inches of rain flooded streets and sfranlded cars. the storm toppled trees and power lines, but dry weather is forecast for today. in amarillo, as much as a foot of snow fell yesterday. that's a record. the storm forced city offices to close and there were flight delays and cancellations. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the storm as it heads north. >> well, some pretty impressive snow last night across texas. amarillo, a foot of snowfall. now it's a rainmaker. both the i-10 and i-20 corridors. could be pockets of bigger snowstorms especially in the florida panhandle. then it's friday night into saturday it becomes more of a snow event. the line lining up along i-95 as it always does. it's going to race out to sea. by the time it clears out

saturday night. heavy rain for much of the southeast and maybe even 4-inch rain totals along the median gulf coast. the snowy side the big cities d.c. philly northern boston most seeing about 4 inches. the heavy amounts will be north of the cities. they're running well below average. none of them have seen 6 inches of snow for the entire winter up to this point. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for the cbs news. well the deadline to pay ransom for japanese hostages has come and gone. a countdown appeared online showing a clock and images of other hostages who has been beheaded. a mother pled for his life yesterday. the islamic state said it would kill the man unless it was paid $200 million.

and the department in yemen will be holding a meeting sunday. the president hadi quit yesterday days after they broke into his palace. the houthi rebels backed by arran control the capital. he was an american ally in the fight against al qaeda. his government has also resigned. the staff at the embassy has been reduced. saudi arabia's king abdullah will be buried today. he died yesterday. he was 90 years old. the saudis are one of the world's top world exporters and an ally in the fight against al qaeda. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. king abdullah died early today after ruling nearly two decades in which the u.s. became its number one ally. thousands of pilgrims mourned the death of king abdullah in mecca.

as ruler of an oil-rich nation, the king was among the wealthiest men in the world. he worked to modernize saudi arabia give more freedom to women, and was a strong ally against al qaeda. president obama visited the ailing leader last march. he issued a statement and gave his condolences and said i always valued king abdullah and valued our friendship and relationship. george bush called him a king of allies. the monarch did not always push. he wanted stronger u.s. support for sunni rebels fighting in syria. the white house says vice president biden will lead a u.s. delegation to saudi arabia in the coming days to pay respects to the king's family. king abdullah's half brother solomon immediately succeeded

the plan would reduce the tax benefits of future contributions to the 529 savings plans. currently money from the 529 plans can be withdrawn without paying capital gains taxes as long as it's used for education. current accounts would be grandfathered. existing funds could still grow and be withdrawn tax-free. stocks on wall street closed higher after the european central bank announced an aggressive stimulus program. the dow surged 259 points. the s&p finished 31 points higher. the nasdaq gained 82 points. last year apple's tim cook was paid $9.2 million. that is more than double what he made in 2013. over $6.5 million of his compensation was incentive-based. apple stock has risen since cook uncovered the larger iphones and faster apple tablets. cook joined apple in 1998 and
