storm as it churns through our region. >> live team three coverage for you katie has been telling us, today's storm just taste whatever we're in for tomorrow. katie? >> yes that's absolutely right, guys. you know, this is just the beginning, and really, when we say just a taste of what we're in for even as early as the evening rush. so the morning drive isn't looking like a cake walk here. but it is looking oddly enough better than thousand will later on. so lets get you through t our live look at the neighborhood network looking out to center city, make out the skyscrapers, that's going to be pretty much impossible later on. while not talking a full-on blizzard in the city, we will be dealing with winds swept snow throughout the course of later on this afternoon, and into tonight. so travel is going to become very treacherous with time. looking at storm scan3, kind of in this little zone of quiet weather for now. obviously, moisture beginning to pack itself up over virginia and maryland, so all sort of almost rolling right up i-95. if you're not already seeing that wet weather or the snow,
4:33 am
you will eventually, so it is almost like now is the time to leave the house if you can. because it is only going to deteriorate with time. now there is clipper looks relatively innocent. to a degree. but there is a couple of moving pieces with this. and they're very, very significant ones. a, you have very significant trough digging in, if you can follow that very thin vale of clouds around the bends there this is a piece of energy up across minnesota that's going to drop in, add to the moisture, add to the intensity, and then if you recall you can at least see the departing clouds far northeast of the storm from the past weekend. so, that he storm, you thought were you done with it, no, actually creating roadblock now, for the rest of the atmosphere. so once that storm gathers its strength we've got full blown nor'easter full blown blizzards no less for all of the spots here up the eastern seaboard shaded in the red notice ocean and monmouth counties included. philadelphia is included as the rest of southern new jersey winter weather advisories further inland you
4:34 am
travel. so we're all impacted by this in some way shape or form. but highlight couple of spots in the zones. we are dealing with winter storm warnings, as of noon today. generally that's when all of the advisories, watches warnings, beginning to go into effect. when we say winter storm warning, talking straight up snow as well as winds swept and wind driven snow, that's going to reduce your visibility. in the meantime, the morning commute, like i mentioned earlier, not ideal either with light snow falling for the better part of the morning you'll be easily dealing with a coating up to inch on the gown. now might not be find that just yet. but that will change with time and slow travels almost a given. shear look at the most to up date eyewitness weather snowfall map. we have since tweaked these totals with the newest guidance that's come in. but this is still a significant event. you're talking six to 12 inches easily, if we don't hit a foot, coming awfully close in philadelphia. and could you even be looking at foot and a half across burlington portions of mercer county portions even bucks county then out to new york sit. well that's where the whallop
4:35 am
gets underway. it is not like it is not a big deal though for you folks across western chester delaware counties, or delaware state really. you, too still dealing with four-8 inches by the time it is all said and done. just getting started now the brunt starts to take shape later today and specially tonight and early tomorrow morning. but we do want to get a check for you out there right now. if you have to head out the door this morning see what things are look, nor we check in with meteorologist carol ericson, liver with the cbs-3 mobile weather lab. hi carol. >> you know, the calm before the storm such an over used expression. but it is probably over used because it is very accurate. this is basically the calm before the storm. we've pick up a little of the clipper snow, naught royersford, right now see in the truck ahead of me, they've not been out overnight to clean off their windshield. they'll get a chance to do that. we will all be getting a chance to scrape off inches and inches of this snow that's coming down. and we will be continuing to come down. notice how shiny these roads are right now. they're fine.
4:36 am
in fact, if no one is behind us, why don't we try and stop andy and see whether we can or not. and that gives you a indication that these things have been binds. because at 26 degrees, outside right now in royersford, wet roads like this should be just getting all over the place. we do have to say though, as we came off 422 at the royersford-trappe exit, almost completely snow covered. we have difficulty slowing down in that spot. so, it is one of these mornings again we've got very used to this of incredibly changing conditions. let me show you a weather graphic to spell this out. if you have to get out, if you decided not to brave the thousands of people in your local store yesterday afternoon, and you want to do it this morning you still have an opportunity to do that. we've got some light snow around, and slick spots. now, this afternoon the snow will be increasing, and then, as we get through tonight this is obviously the time you do not want to be out. and do you not want your pets out either. so bring them in.
4:37 am
blowing snow, and low visibility, it will be making travel extremely dangerous. so anything that you can do this morning here, we're going down a little hill, i can feel my heartbeat ago little faster as we go down a hill at 26 degrees and the roads look wet but we're slowing down just fine out here in royersford. so we know the drill by now i hope we do. we need to keep it in mind, as women, as we get feet possibly of snow in some section of our viewrg area -- viewing area of the system. this is enough. i think you probably agree with that even though you love snow, jess? >> i do love the snow. everybody knows. >> this i don't like to drive in it, i want to be stuck in my house. yep, thank you carol. really actually great to see first-hand accounts of the salt trucks and the cruels out on the scene. really trying get the roadways prepared. you can see out here on route one, these are actually right before the ramps to the blue route, so route one northbound, you can see salt trucks and crews getting ready for the storm to come pulled
4:38 am
over into the right hand shoulder right-hand lane, looking good there so far. that's good news for us. over on 95, around cottman avenue, no real volume in the way where we normally see it here southbound headed toward center city just fine. you can see the roadways looking little damp and little shiny. losing the right hand lane due to ongoing construction as well. we do have couple of accidents, actually, already popping up. so the roadways are slippery, even if you normally leave right now and there is not much in the way of volume on any of the roadways, still give yourselves extra time. they are starting to be some problems. route 422 westbound, the off ramp to limerick and linnfield, actually a plow truck involved with another car for an accident there. so just give yourselves extra time, be careful ukee, back to you. >> all right thankful, jess, it may be a challenging morning commutement penndot has been treating roads and highways for anyone who cannot get the day off. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins just warminster, bucks county to see how driving is in the northwestern suburbs. jan, good morning to you. >> reporter: ukee, good morning, it has been snowing
4:39 am
off and on here in warminster, bucks county all morning long. coming to you live from the intersection of county line and york roads where you can see a bit of snow cover on the roads here. but mostly wet. not too many people out here this morning just yet either. a lot of snow plows however with their blades up right now. and some salt trucks, as well, to keep these roads in the best conditions as they can for as long as they k now penndot has some 400 trucks ready to go today. they're going to be working with 90 tons of salt. they say when the snow really gets blind, they do expect to use all of that. crews are working on 12-hour shifts, and they're prepared to bring in even more people should the need a rise. so this is what it looks like here in bucks county right now. some snow, yes on the roads but really wet right now. on the sidewalks, you definitely want to be careful because the sidewalks look a whole lot worse than the roads do. we'll continue to keep you up to date on all of our coverage and the conditions out on the roads. right now we send it back to you in the studio. >> all right, jan carabeo thank you so much. now, there should be some exceptions for compassionate marijuana use in children with
4:40 am
debilitating diseases, that's according to an updated policy statement from the american academy of pediatrics. but, the group still opposes medical marijuana use and wants more research on how chemicals in it can affect children and teens. well, bird man takes the screen actor's guild award for out standing performance by a cast in a motion picture. the sag win sends the film's oscar hopes soaring nearly every member of bird man's winning team, seven in all had to turn up the microphone, birds man up against boyhood the imitation game, and the theory of everything. we'll take a short break. we'll be right back.
4:43 am
>> mike dinardo on the phone with us from burlington county with the situation there. mike, good morning, what are you fleeing. >> just got off route 295 northbound creek road headed toward delran. it is snowing very, very, very lightly here at the moment. as you are driving, the snowflakes kind of look like falling stars occasional meteor in the headlights. needless to say traction around here, it is fine, interstates, major arteries, 707, 38, 73, 295 all clear and dry and the on and off-ramps 295 have very well salted. >> very good, mike dinardo out on the roads for us this morning. >> thank you, mike appreciate t time is 4:43, let's get more on the storm coverage. >> the storm system has yet to really show us its hand. it is starting off looking very, very innocent. but it is eventually going to really turn into a very large system. and a system that's going have a significant impact on our area. hi jessica good morning, everyone. yep, let's take you out there to storm scan3 and we start
4:44 am
things off with a look at the local level here, just some clouds, seeing some snow, well off to the south and west, still too warm for anything but just some rain showers. but, you can see that there is snow falling at this point. and as we just heard from the report, it is generally very light. so, it is not the most perfect morning drive that we've ever seen. but it is sure going to be at least initially sure going to be beating a we see later on this evening. so what takes shape here? clipper first. then it gets some more energy, then it gets stuck out over just off shore here over the open ocean water. that's going to allow it, the strength to intensify gather ton of moisture, and any rain that you are finding out there will turn over to snow. and it will start to thump. we use that word thump to basically mean you could be talking anything from half inch to inch per hour in some spots. now, we are already seeing the wind kick in. notice the direction. it is a classic nor'easter. that will eventually take shape here. but right now our winds flow
4:45 am
generally from say ten to 15 miles per hour, out of the northeast, and we do see blizzard warnings taking effect at noon today for gust that is could peak as high as 50 miles per hour, so the definition you need for the blizzard to actually meet the criteria, three or more hours of certain winds speed t has to be at least 35 miles per hour sustained or gusts that are frequent as high as that or more. and we think we will finds that specially through eastern monmouth, ocean counties. meanwhile winter storm warnings sort of cut right inbetween here. then you have got winter weather advisories further inland. notice the trends. worse out to the shore getting progressively less of impact the further inland you go. this storm will intensify off the coast by this evening. that's real when the brunt gets underway. that's when you will start to see the blizzard like conditions out toward the area shore points, specifically, again, ocean monmouth county. it will be windy. the winds driven snow down through the shore towns and really anywhere i would say through the city of philadelphia certainly possible. in philadelphia, specifically, talking six to 12 inches of
4:46 am
accumulation. we will come awfully close to foot in the city, if we don't actually hit t so definitely a big concern for travelers out there tonight. meanwhile, look ahead to tomorrow, snow and win continue but taper time. by wednesday quieting down. and then on thursday, not through the day but specifically at night, can you believe it, there is a chance for more snow? jess, over to you. >> we'll have our hands full the next day or two. good morning everybody 4:46. we go outside. showing you good news out on route one, where we do have some salt trucks and crews there on the scene trying to make sure that everyone is going to have safe trip today. this is actually right before the ramp to the blue route this is northbound lanes of route one so you can see the salt trucks ready to go, and that's actually a very good thing. now, over on the ben franklin bridge, our next camera here, you can see this is actually from the jersey side. so all lanes open. everything moving along just fine so far. you can see the bridge looks little damp, little width there.
4:47 am
give yourselves extra time before heading on over the bridge into the city even though all lanes are open, you still want to give yourself an extra ten to 15 minutes t does wonders. 422 westbound the off ramp right in front of the off ramp to limerick, linnfield, there is an accident involving a salt truck and a normal clear. steer their of the salt trucks. another accident plymouth, germantown pike at jolly road. ukee, back over to you. >> thank you, still ahead on "eyewitness news" this morning, the superbowl setting records of about the game is even played. >> more on that coming up. first though here's what's coming up tonight on cbs-3.
4:49 am
4:50 am
snow today tomorrow, and the next day. katie has the latest forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> total of five people are being treated at hospitals after gas leak in lawncrest. the leak was reported just after midnight, and fire crews and philadelphia gas works teams responded. they're working to fix that right now. >> let's get a check on business news right now. >> money watch's jill wagner joins us from the new york stock exchange markets finished last week kind of mixed. what lynn vest ers be watching this week, jill? >> reporter: good morning, ukee erika. actually real big week here on wall street. a loft tech companies like facebook apple google, will be reporting their earnings, federal reserve will also meet for the first time this year, and investors will also be watching for any clues about when the fed could be raising interest rates. they're still at the record low levels. then on friday, the government will release the gdp for the last quarter, so definitely a lot on the agenda here, ukee, erika? >> superbowl less than a week away now already setting records, when it comes to adsment tell us more about it?
4:51 am
>> yes. thirty seconds tv commercials going for about $4.5 million. so that's half a million dollars more than last year. this year we could expect to see budweiser collides days again, but the car companies like ford and volkswagon, they not buy adds. instead, smaller tech companies, about 15, will be trying to make their mark. always my favorite part of the superbowl. >> indeed. >> game shame, all about the commercials. >> even half time shows, too. >> that's right. >> everything not related to football. >> katie perfectly appreciate that, thanks jill. coming up after a short break traffic and weather together. we do it on the three's we'll be right
4:53 am
4:54 am
guys that roll through fast and they do typically dump light accumulation. this is not going to be a typical clipper though. as it starts to gather and garner strength, across our region, we start to seymour intensification take place and also going to start to see that wind pick up. so, with the intensification the snowfall rates become certainly heavier with time. so what's very light right now, what's also still warm enough air to produce just rain, through portions every delaware eventually, and southeast new jersey, will turn over to snow. so this is going to become just completely different looking animal, i guess could you say here, in the next 12 hours. and specially as we're coming up on the typical evening return, that's when things really start to deteriorate. this energy joins up. we end up with a storm that's kind of stuck and stalled out. just off shore. and look at all of the warnings that take effect here. the red that's your biggest issue. where you start to seat red talking blizzard warnings, than actually includes the east-most edge of the delaware valley specifically ocean monmouth counties, all of long
4:55 am
island definately the biggest many pact here up toward southeast new england. further inland, though, winter storm warnings, can't make light of that, for philadelphia, that means we are talking anywhere from six to 12 inches of snow. it is still a good snowstorm further in, just won't pick up as much, but yes we've got real good shot to make a run at a foot of snow in the sit. twelve to 18, looking out toward say burlington, ocean western monmouth, and mercer counties even lower bucks could see those kinds of totals here. but your eyewitness weather seven day forecast, keeping that snow around, right through tomorrow, it starts to taper with time, but this is going to to be essentially two day event. then a loft clean to up do. thursday night can you believe it? we might actually have some more light snow, jess? >> oh, man, this is what i've been hoping for now i'm regretting all of those wishes. thanks, good morning everybody, coming up on 5:00 a.m. actually starting things offer right now on 422 where you can see some snow, obviously fallen there see roadways are wet and shiny, a lot of snow
4:56 am
into the shoulders. this is the eastbound lanes approaching oaks. we can see that some places already have been hit with a little bit of snow over the night and morning hours. over on 422 right around creek road the northbound lanes everything moving along fine so far. if you are head today 295 or possibly to philadelphia and the surround area bridges, no problems there. we know salt trucks are out out in plymouth, germantown pike and jolly road, an accident. on 422 westbound, right in front of the off ram tomorrow limerick and linnfield, an accident here involving a salt truck and another car. just slow down out there guys. erika, back over to you. >> thank you coming up in the next hour of "eyewitness news", new jersey governor chris christie makes big move toward run for the white house. >> we are also continuing to keep our eye on the storm depending on where you live, you might already see some snow falling, and much more is on the way. >> we have crews all across the area, monitoring conditions before you head out the door to go to school and workment back at the top of the hour.
4:59 am
>> right now bracing for major snowstorm. it is a one-two punch of wintery weather. storm scan3 shows the first round of snow, blowing into the area, right about now. but the worse is yet to come. >> it is monday, january 26th, good morning everyone, i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erika von tiehl. heads up for you more than 100 schools already have closed for the day or plan to send student home early before really the worse of the storm hits. try to get home safely. philadelphia public and archdioces schools will close at noon today. >> and i'm told we'll put the full list at the bottom of the screen and as cbsphilly.com. now, we have a team of reporters all across the region monitoring the conditions, so you know what to expect when you leave your home. >> now, checking in with carol and january coming up in a minute. first, katie has been watching this storm for days now.
5:00 am
good morning. >> yes, absolutely erika. you know the storm actually started off looking to be just another, well, typical lip clipper which sips through maybe reinforce the cold, bring light snow amounts. that is not what we are looking at now. and boy, i have to tell you as i was watching these new model runs come in, through the course of the weaken here, every single one continues to intensify it even more, and more and now we have just got almost like a frankenstein monster that is got a mine of its own. let's go on out there. show you what's happening first and for most, start at the shore raindrops out there on the camera lens and we've actually got little bit of mixed bag, depending on your location, as to what kind of precipitation you're finding so at the shore proverbial calm before the storm. the real storm. you can see the shaking already starting to get underway on this field camera. and it is a matter of time before we tart to see some flake falling down here, too. we already obviously have. some of them on the camera lens. let's go next to storm scan3 bit of wider zoom. starting offer generally with light rai
