5:30 am
those storms that, man where did it come from? as we are looking at the weekend computer guidance, it just blew up out of no where. and we continue to see this clipper system that looks relatively modest, at this hour bring really just for half the region little bit of light snow. so as the day progresses here today, we are going to see that snow hang on through midday, in light form, but it will start to pick up with time. and it will start to be a system that gathers not just intensity but moisture. so once the snow starts to pick up heavily it will be thumbing across our area. now, this is an interesting storm simply because when you think about the area and where you tend to get the big snows you think the poconos think the lehigh valley, right? not this time. this time the heaviest snow will go to the east most counties. so especially through an ocean into monmouth county where we actually will see blizzard warnings take effect, otherwise winter storm warnings around the area. prunt of the storm tonight into tomorrow, generally the timing, that's where you could
5:31 am
be dealing with tropical storm force wind gusts out at the shore line, so dealing with light fluffy snow it will blow it will drift it will significantly reduce your visibility, and white-out conditions are absolutely not without question. here's a look at the advisories i mentioned to you a moment ago. do you have blizzard warnings taking effect at noon in ocean, monmouth counties, generally where the worse will be for our area. but, certainly, it is is still a significant storm through philadelphia, all those counties shaded in the pink, and the general expectation for this zone, is that we're looking at swat of six to 12 inches as things progress. soap, that will be storm total at this point though, really just getting through the morning drive and getting you into the midday. probably only going to be dealing with modest totals of a coating to inch or two maybe max up to three but we're just getting started. we continue our team three coverage sending things taught carol erickson. carol, you're been around thus far watcher have you found on the roadways? how bad is it?
5:32 am
>> you know, not that bad actually, at this point. but we new that it wouldn't than bad at this point. but that said, we are out in east pike land, in chester county, and we're about to approach a hill. notice this road, in fact, i'll turnoff this interior light, so that we can see and i can see this road better. it is snow covered. and one of the things that you will find, and maybe you are the driver that does it, and maybe you're not but there was a car with its flashers ongoing very, very, very slowly, and had a stack of cars behind him. what sometimes of course happens, somebody gets tired of that, and they start to pass and that's a problem. look at this hill i'm going down though. you just have to hope in weather like this when a road looks like this one does, with all of this snow on it, that somehow there is a treated surface underneath this snow. it really makes you miss the sites of gray pavement. i know i was at my house today thinking i'm going to miss not seeing the ground for a long time. and that's likely what is going to be happening over the
5:33 am
next well, as colds as it will be getting after the snowfalls, it will be a while before we see the pavement again. now, anything that you see here from the clipper system, clipper system weakening almost like evil twins. one is good, and one's not so good. so this is a better evil twin. they the worse evil twin still to come. the weather graphic the light snow between now and 9:00. so, it is easy enough to get around now. just be careful. 7:00 to noon, snow showers could be finding still some rain to the south and the east, this afternoon we get this scattered precipitation maybe a break or two then tonight, all snow and it becomes heavy as katie has so admirably and very eloquently been talking about all morning long. so jess, right now not that big a deal on the roads compared to what is to come. >> exactly. you know, i completely agree that so far. speeds seem to be okay. roadways seem to be basically dry. not completely covered in a lot of snow. we do have some spots though, however, and few accidents, so we do know it is a little bit
5:34 am
slippery. 5:33, good morning everybody go and check how things are doing on 95 where we can see police activity over in the right-hand lane. not exactly sure what he's doing there so far. but it is at least taking out that the right hand shoulder approaching girard and northbound lanes southbound lanes moving just along a little bit better. now over out in new jersey, everything seems to be moving along just fine here. the northbound lanes headed toward 295 or possibly to philadelphia and the surround area bridges looking just okay. but you can see little bit of volume starting to builds in there. over on 422 eastbound, at keim street, there is an accident there. disable truck, out in new jersey on 295 southbound. right in front of the onramp from route one that's pushed over into the shoulder there right in front of the ramp. and we have some speed restrictions on 495 southbound right around 95, down to 45 miles an hour due to slippery conditions. the rest of the travel times everything still looking just okay. even though there is no problems on the schuylkill, 202 or the pa turnpike, still
5:35 am
give yourselves extra time headed out the door. over to you. >> thank you depending on where you liver snow may complicate your morning commute. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo let's get right out to her in warminster checking out the roads in the northwest suburbs there. how is it looking jan? >> reporter: erika, good morning, still snowing ever so slightly in warminster, bucks county this morning. coming to you live from county line and york roads. you can see, this intersection, not looking too bad. when we first got here, that was pretty much snow covered. but there had been so much traffic now in the area and quite a few salt trucks, and that's clearing up, however the roads are still slick. now, penndot has been preparing for this storm. they were out all day yesterday, with some 400 crews, salting and brining the roads. they'll have that many crews on stand by today as well. they will be working on 12-hour rotating shift. and they've got 90 tons of salt to work w we're told by officials that they do expect to use all of that salt before this snowstorm or once this snowstorm is over. so, they continue to work, saw
5:36 am
lot of the plow trucks on the side of the roads on stand by this morning waiting for a plowable snow, of course, not yet, that out here this morning. we will continue to take a look at these conditions, but so far obviously, snow still on the sidewalks. some snow on area roads. so you'll definitely want to be careful as you head out the door this morning. penndot officials urge if you can stay at home, probably that is the best bet to give these crews some time, some space to work. reporting live in warminster, jan carabeo cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> jan, thank you. and the rush is onto get ready before the worse of this snow hits. now, of course, familiar scene here grocery stores all across the area. people have packed the aisles at the wegmans in cherry hill picking up those last minute supplies. and, salt and shovels, they were also flying off the shelves, at hardware stores. we stopped by fairmount hardware off 20th street last night. lines were long, but the store manager tells us the shelves are fully stocked just in case you aren't fully prepared yet for the storm. now when you aren't near your tv you can always head to

5:39 am
no more. >> all right jill, thank you. >> we are continuing to keep our eye on a storm this morning, a big one too the snow is going to start picking up as the day moves on. katie tracking this and will let you know what you can expect in your neighborhood coming up. >> and they're also bracing for a historic blizzard, further up the east coast. we'll check the latest conditions across the area when we come back. don't forget please do it safely. sends us your snow pictures today using hashtag cbs-3 snow as our day goes on. once again be safe while you are doing it. we'll be right back. good morning.

5:43 am
yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before. prepare to be safe. >> with all of that snow and the winds in the forecast, the storm is expected to paralize travel despite efforts to pre-treat roads and get those plows ready. more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled, and more could follow when that heavy snow arrives. right now, we want to check in with katie tracking this for days now really compared to the northeast of us it, could be so much worse. >> that's so true. isn't it crazy to think that the kind of snow in a we're talking about is getting sort of bypassed by the brunt of this? i mean, this will be huge storm as we just heard for points to the north and east, which we will discuss. we do also want to check in with eyewitness weather watcher network, generally finding temperatures at errable freezing across the board. even though we found, and i'll show this on radar in a second, even though finding little bit of rainout, there eventually it will all turn over to snow. eileen murray sending in 24 degrees, she does have some light snow falling in the
5:44 am
gilbertsville area, she did pretty calm for right now it, have couple of folks that said they had somoza modest snow falling in during the overnight. matthew just has clouds, as well, his comment a coating of snow fell through the overnight, and we heard from mike denardo from "kyw news radio" yes break in the action right now in some spots. good chunk of our area, in fact but margo simons, 32 degrees, snow just began. and it is coming in with strong winds. she says as well. now, we want to take you to ever storm scan, take a look at what's going on out here, and with the clipper system, at what starts off there is will be a big monster of a nor'easter, later on tonight. so starting to see some of the moisture picking up here through central virginia, it is generally light snow, that's since fallen in the last couple of hours but notice, that there is not the most organized storm just yet. couple of pieces of the puzzle to work with here, energy, this will drop in, recur of, move in, help the storm to
5:45 am
intensify, and then you can barely make it out but left over clouds from the weekends storm, that's setting up roadblock so nothing can go anywhere, tries to move out but this roadblock is going to keep it in place. that is when the wind kicks up the snow can thump and this storm will create its own energy and inch fence if i case. headed out on the roads really want you to be careful. evening return by far worse of the two commute today. this morning not any picnic either. the light snow as we've heard has been out there. and we've got snow showers that will continue into the afternoon. generally midday, talking one to 3 inches, but blowing and drifting snow, i mean, talk about a difference from even just the afternoon into the typical evening rush. you're talking winds increasing significantly snowfall thump in intensity could be picking up anything from half inch to hour per hour talking generally six to 12 inches in philadelphia, maybe as much as 18 as you go out toward east and central
