building is dark, that is close to hundred people have been displaced by this fire. we're told by red cross that those people are at a nearby -- i'm sorry. >> this is fire marshall you are hearing from. >> if you go out back you will see damage, all of the damage good on the back side. >> reporter: we're live on the air right now can you walk us through exactly what happened today, this morning. >> at approximately 911 dispatcher center received a call from the fire in the building here. several occupants were alerted to the a alarm system in the building and several occupants called 911. they received multiple calls on this white marsh police department arrived to find the four story apartment building was coming from all four floors and the fire visible from the second floor rear and third floor rear of the building. there was multiple people that

had woken up that were trapped on their balconies and lower basement windows. they could not get out because hallways were full of smoke. police initiated rescues. fire companies, baron hill wissohickon and they were dispatched when they arrived every ground ladder they could use was used in the area of the devices and fireman assisted the police in evacuating the residents from the building. our first priority is life safety. we had limited crews on fire suppression. once we had occupants accounted for then efforts were getting the the fire under control. >> reporter: a couple injuries as well, in the specific unit where this started. >> in the unit where fire start there had were five residents in that unit. two were transported to abington hospital with smoke inhalation a third one was transported to abington with burns on the feet and they have been transported down to temple burn unit. >> reporter: talk about how surprising there weren't more

serious injuries. there are people on their balconiness need of rescue. >> that is correct, a and today with the weather that we're facing. it is very cold out. icy conditions in the parking lot. snow on the ground. this could have have very well been a double or triple fatal fire here but with the efforts between the police and fire, ambulance, our emergency services in the township, things went pretty well. >> reporter: fire marshall also talk about the history of this building. we understand three years ago you were going to condemn this because of the number of code violations but you have been working with the the owner and possibly that could have save lives today. >> approximately three years ago building and code department and my office, we have work with the officials and the the owner. we did condemn the building because of many building and fire code violations. we have a very good working relationship with the current owner. he has in the last three years has done a lot of work on bringing the building up to code. again, i contribute -- >> reporter: specifically with

chris van cleve joins us from massachusetts where residents already digging out from almost 2 feet of snow. chris, tell us more, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. some resident will to have do more than dig out. we have several homes damaged after a sea wall gave way and as a push of high tied, mixed with a strong wind, that were coming out of this storm pushed boulders and debris into these homes. we will push in, you can see behind me some of the damage. also, it is high tied right now so water is again, flowing into the street, this was the not your typical blizzard. winter's frigid fury, snow continues to blanket part of the eastern massachusetts overnight freezing some homes and cars in time. it was damage when a storm driven high tied destroyed a portion of the sea wall

more on our breaking news we have been following flames and smoke tear through a montgomery county apartment building, fire fighters, quickly, rescued the tenants but at least one family was forced to escape, the flames a mother and her daughters jumped from balcony from safety. us that everyone here is very, very fortunate that there were no serious injuries this morning as a result of this fire. they say this easily could have been a deadly fire. now all is quiet the right new but with fire crew is arriving, many residents were on those balconies in need of rescue. one family we expect to jumped to safety. three people were taken to the hospital and only one of those people have had minor burns. now this fire, started in white marsh here around 1:00 in the morning. these are washington tower apartments on the 400 block of south bethlehem pike. they were around hundred people here this morning when the fire broke out inside of the second story apartment. the flames ripped through several apartments all the way through to the roof, smoke filled all four floors. fire crews went into rescue mode. unfortunately this is the second fire in recent weeks but fire marshall says this building owner here has made upgrade over the past three years that probably helped save lives this morning. take a listen. >> about three years ago building inn accompanied department and my office for

white marsh township we did contempt the building because of the numerous building and fire code violations. all of the occupants at that time were evacuated from the building. since then owner is very cooperative with us, and has brought the the building up to code. he has construction tours to the building, and has put a modern alarm system in the building, smoke detectors alerted the objecting pants. >> reporter: now some residents, including children were forced to jump this morning. we spoke to a mom who has a five-year old, eight years old, this is that mom's cell phone video you are looking at right now. they heard the alarm and smelled thick smoke. after realizing they had had no way out they jumped from the second story apartment and safe this morning staying with family. back out here live it is dark, all 100 residents here had been evacuated as you can imagine. the cause of the investigation
