than 1,000 flights and that number could grow. a live look now at storm scan3. it shows light precipitation is already moving into the region. the heaviest will come a bit later tonight. good evening, everyone i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. many people are out and about on the roads tonight and travel may get a little tricky later. we have live team three coverage of the approaching winter storm. matt rivers is tracking road conditions but let's start with meteorologist justin drabick. he has more on what we can expect throughout the evening. justin. >> good evening, natasha. that's right, starting to see the first round of the precipitation moving in from west to east. this stuff very light. temperatures are at or above freezing right now so this will not accumulate. melting on the roads. very light snow coming through the city in parts of southern montgomery into bucks county little rain mixing in across south philadelphia down into south jersey but still light snow extends back to our west. that's going to be the trend for the evening, off and on periods of light snow. main event 10, 11 o'clock. heavier moisture off to the

south and west. a lot of rain showing up. this storm is a little different. it's tracking little bit farther to the west so it's able to pull in some of that milder air but still we have an arctic air mass situated over the weekend so some of that sunshine bon cold air will remain in place. that's why we have the threat for freezing rain. winter storm warnings go into effect at 7 o'clock tonight for the areas in pink, north bucks montgomery county up to the poconos. winter weather advisory for philadelphia and surrounding suburbs. that will go in effect from 7 o'clock until 7:00 a.m. on monday morning. here are the temperatures. up near 40 degrees for the high today. 38 at the airport, freezing in allentown, 33 in reading. these temperatures will drop a little bit as soon as that heavier precipitation starts to break out. freezing in quakertown and doylestown. here's what to expect tonight into monday. snow changes to rain but we have to watch for that freezing rain north and we have the of the city. best shot to see accumulating snow will be the far northwestern suburbs around 1 to 3 inches higher amounts into the lehigh valley but up to .2 ice accumulation

possible. that's going to slow things down for the morning commute north of the city so watch out for slick spots. the precipitation will begin to taper off late in the morning. let's time it out. now until 10 o'clock light snow rain mixing in south and east. overnight we see the heaviest precipitation. mix of snow freezing rain to rain again areas north of the city best shot for freezing rain. tomorrow morning freezing rain to the north, rain to the city tapering off late morning into the afternoon. coming up we'll talk about how much and where and temperatures stay cold for the next seven days. >> it is going to be a slow go for those coming home if parties from tonight's big game and tomorrow morning's commute. let's get over to matt rivers joining us from penndot's salt yard in norristown with the latest on preparations for tonight's storm. hey, matt. >> reporter: hey, natasha s looks a little empty here at the salt yard in norristown. that's because it is. all the trucks that were here a little bit earlier now have started to make their way out onto area roadways. we've got some video to show you that we shot a little bit

earlier here at the salt yard. stop me if you've seen this before. a salt truck getting filled up ahead of the trip out onto streets and highways in our area. let me run through a few numbers. this is the 11th winter event that penndot has had to deal with so far this year. they've used over 50,000 tons of salt on area streets and highways. but they do have 80,000 more on hand ready to go. penndot tells us they did send crews out thursday and friday brining and salting area roadways so they do believe that they are prepared for this storm. still, they are warning drivers to be careful out on the streets tonight and tomorrow morning. today super bowl sunday we encourage motorists to exercise extreme caution and tolerance as they make their way home from their super bowl parties or wherever they're watching the game. conditions will be deteriorating while it's snowing and it switches over to the freezing rain. in addition various

"eyewitness news" this morning starts at 4:00 a.m. we've got breaking news tonight. police sources tell "eyewitness news" an arrest has been made in the murder of a social worker in north philadelphia. surveillance video captured the january 13th shooting kim jones was shot once in the back of the head while waiting for a bus at 12th and

jefferson. sources tell us tonight the suspect was one of her coworkers. charges have been filed in this case. we will continue to stay on top of breaking developments and bring you the latest both here on television and online. we have now learned that dennis pozniak has been charged with killing his girlfriend and her father in mount holly. nicole and brian wilson were murdered sometime friday into saturday. the medical examiner has ruled that they were bludgeoned to death. pozniak was found with several cuts that police say were self inflicted. he's awaiting a psychiatric evaluation is that being held on a million dollars bail. and now a three alarm fire in gloucester county, it sent four people to the hospital and damaged up to 10 apartments. the fire happened at the chestnut lane apartments in deptford. five people were injured but all injuries are considered to be minor. the red cross is providing emergency assistance to the

displaced families. the cause of this fire is still unknown at this time. and developing now measles spreading across the nation with cases in several states and now delaware. new castle county delaware is dealing with its first confirmed case of measles in three years. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson tells us what health officials are saying. >> this is one of the most contagious infections. >> reporter: add one more voice a growing list of health professionals including officials from the centers for disease control with a warning , there is a measles outbreak and it is entirely preventable. >> if you're not vaccinated and you're near somebody who is contagious, you have a 90 percent chance of becoming infected. >> reporter: delaware public health and health director dr. carr roll verkay is following developments nationwide. the cdc reported more than a hundred cases of measles

across 14 states stemming from an out break traced to disney planned california. since then more incidents in the northeast. an infected college student board an amtrak train in new york a delaware woman comes back to new castle county with the infection from traveling abroad. >> it happens because there are more unvaccinated individuals in our population now than unfortunately there was like a decade ago. >> reporter: the doctor says an anti-vaccination movement started over the last 15 years. >> the segment of the population that really felt that the measles mumps and rubella vaccine was causing an increase in autism. we have more science now than ever before to help us say there just is no connection. >> reporter:. >> reporter: in most of the measles cases the infect we had not vaccinated. back now in pennsylvania where the risk is among the greatest. according to the cdc the number of kindergarten aged children who last year failed to get a measles vehicle accidentsy -- vaccine was nearly 15 percent the second highest rate among states in the country.

recordering from delaware county, i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, the search is on for a prisoner who escaped from a correctional facility in berks county. pennsylvania state police say john diven pulled a fire alarm inside building 30 of the wernersville community corrections center and then made a run for it. the man was last seen getting into a red car just after midnight. officials wouldn't say why he's been ar rert arrested. the daughter of late singer whitney houston remains in a georgia hospital tonight and sources are telling the cbsphilly 88 in atlanta that bobbi kristina brown is in a medically induced coma. the 21-year-old was discovered by her husband in their roswell home. brown was found face down in the bathtub and isy was unresponsive. whitney houston died nearly three years ago. the award winning singer was also found in a bathtub. the eve of the grammys in los angeles. tonight we continue to have our eye on this winter storm. it's already left its mark on

>> back now on "eyewitness news." near whiteout conditions in des moines iowa. officials there are urging people across the state to stay off the roads. that same storm is now coming through our region. meteorologist justin drabick he's going have the latest details for you coming up in just a few moments. now the faithful joined with archbishop charles chaput as a relic from a popular pope turned saint is placed on the altar. a vial of blood from pope saint john paul ii was placed on the altar of the sacred heart of jesus. he visited in 1976 before he became pope. group of volunteers meantime at clearview regional high school got together to try to help local families in need. they're hoping to make a big difference by making hoagies. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury has more. >> reporter: these aren't your average hoagies.

these are hoagies for hope. more than 200 volunteers were breaking bred at clearview regional high school in mullica hill sunday morning. >> incredible awesome experience. >> reporter: the 2-foot long hoagies sell for $10. >> we're making an italian hoagie with salami, provolone cheese lettuce tomato. >> reporter: the meat of the story is not how much heart goes in. >> blind deaf, cerebral palsy, she was on a breathing tube for a long time. >> reporter: christina was born with several health problems. she's now facing a number of surgeries that are not covered by insurance. the funds raised will help christina and two other local families. >> i feel grateful. i feel loved yeah, by a lot of people. >> reporter: so how does it work? let us explain.

they are making more than 1200 italian hoagies, several tables serve as an assembly line. volunteers enjoy hamming it up as they place the meat. the only thing that makes them cheesy is the provolone. >> everybody is responsible to make it look good. we want a good product. >> reporter: it was a wrap as volunteers walked away knowing they did a good deed. >> the impact of health each other out. that's our clearest goal at clear view being a family. >> reporter: in mullica hill, syma chowdhury cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> good evening everyone. precipitation is moving in in the form of some light snow. especially from the city on northward but the good news is temperatures still reporting at or above freezing from our weather watchers even some upper 30's showing up. we'll take it down into jersey right now where it is 38 degrees currently in wenonah, new jersey. kathy checks in with clouds around 38 degrees. she said she is waiting on the snow. it's chilly but no precipitation yet but waiting

on in flurries. there's flurry action just off to your west. where we have snow is up north of the city and we're sitting the 32 degrees. this is in partly cloudy casey. chuck checks in at 32 degrees. he also sends in a picture and you can clearly see that snowfall coming down. light snow now precipitation will begin to pick up through the overnight hours and i'll tell you also where it's snowing, up in the poconos. that's great news. this is a live look at big boulder. skiers and riders are enjoying a wintry scene up there with a light snow and looks like they could get six to 10-inches of fresh snow from this storm system overnight into tomorrow morning. check out this storm on storm scan3. pretty large system. again, it's well developed already and we're kind of on that milder side. tracking a little bit farther to the west so we'll get that push of warmer air in here overnight but still it's runing into some leftover arctic airport. initially we see a period of some light snow on the front end of this system and right now some of that snow moving across the region. again, off and on periods of

light snow. this won't accumulate to anything yet. it's really the overnight hours as that heavier moisture moves in just north of the city. best shot to see a few inches of snow more the farther north you go. temperatures compared to this time yesterday, about 10, 11 degrees warmer. that's that arctic air trying to retreat back to the north but still enough cold air in the place where up in the poconos mainly snow and ice through the overnight hours. that's why you guys will see the most snowfall from this system. you get into the lehigh valley down into philadelphia a mix of snow ice to rain and in south jersey and most of delaware mainly rain from this event. so let's time things out for you now through about midnight or 1:00 a.m. start to see that precipitation picking up. there's that snow line pretty much over the city northward. there could be pockets of heavy snow initially bucks montgomery county up to the lehigh valley. steady rains arrive into south jersey but then the warmer air pushes northward. however, though you see some pink on the maps so watch out poconos down through the lehigh valley, northern bucks montgomery counties could see a period of freezing rain through the overnight into tomorrow morning. and then periods of rain

through the mid morning hours and finally into the afternoon we start to break these showers up maybe a few snow showers in the lehigh valley and late afternoon evening we dry out and skies clear out a little bit. into tuesday we go, a mix of sunshine and clouds, it will be will be cold and windy once again. little if anything snow for anything, a coating or snow. northern bucks montgomery one to potentially 3-inches, three to six in the lehigh valley and there you go the sweet spot up in the poconos six to 10-inches. ice could be a problem in the far northwestern suburbs. you can see the areas in light blue indicating potential for freezing rain, a few hundred's of an inch depending on how long that cold air lasts. there will be slick spots in the overnight hours into tomorrow morning. temperatures right now above freezing. they'll trop at or slightly below freezing especially north of the city. tomorrow we get that surge of warmer air. looks like everybody goes above freezing by the afternoon and then the colder air quickly moves back in. overnight mixture of snow, freezing rain and rain, low temperature near 32 degrees

with temperatures rising overnight. morning rain on monday, freezing rain, early in the morning especially north of the city high temperature 40 degrees. it's ground hog day. see what phil has to say. gets cold for tuesday sunshine windy 28 degrees. back to 43 on wednesday. thursday more clouds, maybe a flurry, 32 and looks like it stays cold through the end of the week into next weekend and we could see a few snow showers later next sunday. so, cold and active weather pattern coming up for the start of february. >> oh, boy. thank you so much justin. appreciate that. let's check in with lesley. i think there's a big game going on. >> yeah, i think the biggest game of the season is under way, super bowl xlix under way between the patriots and seahawks. seattle looking to become the first team to repeat as champs in 10 years. right now we have no score in the first quarter. the flyers are rolling they've won four straight after beating the maple lever at the center last night and they got on the board first. just so happened to

one-nothing flyers. that's all they need. steve mason with a gate game, his one hundredth for the flyers. toronto took 30 shots and he stopped all of them earning his 25th career shutout. flyers win one to nothing. >> given our best effort. mason kept us in the game all game and that's the type of wins that i think earlier in the year we were losing them and we're finding a way to win some games now. >> when you have your home games you definitely have to make sure you get two points out of them. they're so important to have a good home record. we did a good job this little stretch. we put ourselves in a little bit of a position to get back in the hunter. >> sixers had the day off. tomorrow they'll face lebron james and the cleveland cavaliers who have won 10 straight game. last night the sixers gave the atlanta hawks all they could handle. after trailing by 15 the sixers making a run. michael carter-williams with a pass to nerlens noel. the hawks went on a 10-two run to end the game after nailing
