4:00 am
we have our eye on a winter storm this morning that's making a mess of your morning commute. take a look to your left, storm scan3 right now showing the system's latest trek. right there on your right live look at the road conditions that we are seeing right now in a lot of areas. hi good morning i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erika von tiehl. that snow has changed to ever rain and sleet in areas others dealing with a tricky situation out there. >> let's start our team coverage this morning we begin in the weather center with katie. good morning. >> yes we've been dealing with the entire variety pack that mother nature could offer up with this groundhog day storm. so we've had some snow had some rain everything inbetween. what you normally would see on this here on "skycam 3" is a view of the skyscrapers.
4:01 am
you're not finding them at all out there. rather just a lot of low-lying clouds over center city. we also have certainly seen a mix in philadelphia, too. let's go ahead take a look next to local level of storm scan3, though, yes, you have got every color available to you here. notice what's happened over the last few hours we have gun to see a lot of the snow turning over to or mixing with sleet and/or rain. now, here's the thing folks as we still have temperatures pretty marginal at freezing, you're still going to potentially find slick travel out there. so even if it looks like it is just rain on radar at this point, i don't want you to get too comfortable out there okay? we still have winter storm warnings shaded in the pink area depending on your location it, will start to expire earlier or later this afternoon, winter weather advisory shaded in the purple, and we actually will see those beginning to go out of the effect within the next hour, start to see conditions get gradually milder, and better, through the course of the day, this is generally region by region what you will look ahead to, steady snow still
4:02 am
continues for the next few hours, up through the poconos far northwest suburbs, lehigh valley, snow mixing over to rain, so it could easily still be slick and you got to worry about it maybe freezing on contact, then chilly rain through philadelphia as we continue to find right now and definitely slushy spots. i can tell you even just on my own personal commute into the building this morning, it was a total difference from the front step of my house to what i saw in philadelphia, so you will find that, too ever changing conditions, depending on where your travels take you. this is how much we're still expecting by the time is it is all said and done. coating to inch of snow has already fall never philadelphia, so you're still going to find the slush out there, but now anything else we find is bathesly rain. it will help start to wash that away somewhat. again, still watch for slick travel as a result of this. look at this. it is obvious right? you have got temperatures that are very, very marginal freezing, so while a lot milder right now through the southern tear tear of new jersey delaware, if you're still close to freezing we worry about that freezing on
4:03 am
contact situation. so the freezing rain, you just again want to take it slow, play it safe out there. around the region we go, up in the poconos today, you will have a hard time hitting the freezing mark, a snow event hence the higher snowfall totals. down the shore dealing with 50 and some rain going throughout the day. starts to gradually taper off but this is definitely going to be a little bit after tricky situation with temperatures kinds of all over the place certainly for now it is still potentially very slick outside. now, we will get a check on the roads with justin drabick. >> hey. >> ya, weather taking over. >> changes katie. good morning not what you want to deal with on monday morning headed back to work and school. seeing everything from rain to fog to some ice and some snow. let's start you off here on 95 southbound on broad street. actually looking pretty good. just wet roads traffic moving smooth as of now hey still early in the game. we'll check out ben franklin bridge.
4:04 am
visibility, low there, you can barely see the bridge right now, that's the warmer air trying to come in over the colds surface so watch out for a low visibility around philadelphia. couple of accident, already on the northern part of the viewing area, that's typical as that where we are seeing icy conditions. northeast extension at milford township between quakertown and lehigh valley. you may want to get off at the quakertown exit if you are headed north take nine northbound, to alternate route to get away from that accident. and further up the turnpike, closer toward the lehigh valley exit, another accident right before the lehigh valley interchange, this is between 663 and interchange, and we'll take you over to new jersey, where we do have some road construction to talk about. this is i295 northbound, that's going to slow things down little bit. but again, at this point in time things pretty smooth going, you can see the green lights there but things will change later on. play it safe. take it slow. that's the latest here on the roads. we sends back to erika. >> justin, thank you.
4:05 am
as we wait to see if punxsutawney phil predict six more weeks every winter, the suburbs are trying to to get through one more day of t "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo out in exton, chester county, good morning. >> reporter: erika, good morning, what we're seeing right now is mainly rain here in exton, chester county, when we are getting out to the live location, the highways are very, very wet. we saw a lot of ponding. the roads look much like this parking lot does. all soaked with this slush any rain that fell overnight or any snowy should say that fell overnight is now saturated by all of the rain. take a look at the roads just outside of the exton square mall saturated, as well, very slushy, and very slippery. this is what you will deal with this morning. penndot, however is prepared. though more than 300 salt trucks, and plows, on the roads, actually treating these roads late last week, they were in preparation for the squawls that moved through, a lot of the salt is left over this morning for this storm
4:06 am
out here this morning fairly quiet. we do have some private plow companies clearing off the parking lots, and these malls, in this area. so this is the type of activity we will see this morning, of course we will keep you to up date with all of the conditions. for now live in exton, chester county. >> january, thank you. now if you still have not download dollars our weather app, today would be good day to get your hand on it, you can track live radar and receive weather alerts, it is available right now on itunes and the google play store. it is intercepted at the goal line by malcolm butler! unreal! >> unreal is right. why did they pass the ball? that's the question a loft folks are asking this morning after an absolutely heart stopping finish to superbowl 49. sport director beasley reese wrapped up the game that went down to the very last minute. >> superbowl 49, a battle of two dominant teams seattle trying to become the first team to repeat, as champion in
4:07 am
a decade. bill belichick and tom brady going for fourth superbowl championship. here we go. the patriots trail by ten going into the fourth quarter. tom brady hit julian edelman with about two minute left in the game, took the lead, 28-24. seattle needed a touchdown. russell wilson with the pass to jermaine curse, comes up with the miracle incredible catch, in his pants to his hands, 5 yards to go for the touchdown. but instead they try to throw it and it is intercepted. tom brady could not believe it. twenty-five seconds left seattle's at the one and you just can't believe that they made that decision on the ball. so new england wins their fourth superbowl 28-24 is the final. >> preparation it, all comes to preparation.
4:08 am
i am just new it. just made the play. crazy man. >> tom brady named the game's mvp winning his fourth superbowl tying him with terry bradshaw and john montana for the most superball wins all time for quarterback. i'm beasley reese let's go back to the studio. >> you know pay tree the fans are happy this morning. take a look at this video out of boston, small group of people became hundreds celebrating through the streets of the city, as the patriots clinch that victory. developing right now philadelphia police are expected to hold a news conference to announce arrest in the bus stop murder after woman in north philadelphia. kim jones was shot execution style while waiting for a bus on 12th and jefferson january 13th. police sources tell "eyewitness news", the suspect worked with the 56 year old social worker at turning points for children. new this morning, a toddler is recovering in the hospital after she fell from a two story window at her north
4:09 am
philadelphia home. this happened around 12:30 on the 2100 block of grass street. investigators say that two year old girl was conscious and talking after the fall. she was taken to hahnemann hospital in stable condition. philadelphia police are investigating the incident. >> the search continues this morning for a prisoner who escaped a correctional facility in berks county. pennsylvania state police say that john dive inch pulled at the warner ville correctional facility, then bolted for the door. the bellefonte man last seen getting into a red car just after midnight sunday. he had originally been arrested for driving under the influence. >> well, delaware's reporting its first case of measles in three years. it is a woman in her 20's from new castle county. infected college student boarded an amtrak train in new york. she came back with the infection from traveling abroad. delaware's division of public health says the woman was not vaccinated against measles.
4:10 am
>> this is one of the most contagious infections, in fact, some estimates are if you're not vaccinated and you're near shock is contagious, you have 90% chance of becoming infected. >> delaware health officials say the woman's case has so not related to the outbreak traced to disneyland in california. much more ahead on "eyewitness news" this morning, when we come back, we will take a look at the budget president obama is expected to unveil later today. >> what whether he might actually find some common grounds with republicans. and we're keeping our eye on this morning's winter storm. mobile three giving us another look right there at the road conditions seeing snow piled up on the right. back
4:11 am
4:12 am
>> president obama taking the trams off his 4 trillion-dollar budget proposal wants $478 billion for highway bridge, and transit upgrades t also proposes higher taxes on
4:13 am
wealthier americans and corporations, house ways means and committee chairman, paul ryan says he's willing to find common grounds with democrats. >> we've had such a stagnant economy, the slowest recovery since world war ii, middle income wages are stagnant, we've good to break out of this. >> the budget offers a mix of spending programs and tax increases largely on the nation's wealthiest. it would help pay for middle class tax breaks and proposals like expanded childcare and a free community college program. >> 4:13, traffic and weather together on the 3's. here's kate. >> i we've got lots to discuss obviously out, there ukee. >> this morning will be little rough go for you for sure. here's my advice, hopefully you had a chance to set the alarm little earlier because you new this was coming, give yourself extra time. always hard to get out the door on a monday morning as it is, but this is one of the days where we really don't want you to be speeding along. even though it may look just wet it, may not be just wet. because we do have this variety pack of weather going
4:14 am
on. so let's go on outside. we start things off with the full screen view of storm scan3, a lot going on, enough mild air since taken over most of the region, that any snow has since turned over to rain. here's the thing though, you might still have those temperatures and certainly the ground level. it might still be cold enough it could still be slick. so just exercise caution. we just want to stress. that will meanwhile, it is actually turning warm enough for everybody anywhere pretty much from our region on south. see straight up just rainout of this. and it is as we've said groundhog day. so it is the big question as to whether phil out in punks townly see his shadow or not. we do not want him to see his shadow. no shadow would mean an early spring. that's the hope here. meanwhile, let's take you through future weather here. morning forward not only do you see a lot of the precipitation, wintery precipitation, pink, purple, snow sleet turning over to rain but you also see that there is at least a little back edge to this. not completely out of the
4:15 am
woods until this evening but some of you may catch a nice little break not really see much else other than residual shower of rain or snow or sleet later into this evening. then it is done. now, as skies clear that's another problem. temperatures are going have a chance to just bottom out. let's take you though out to what we're looking at here for groundhog day. the number of predictions, 118 that he's made so far when he has seen his shadow, it's been 101 of those years. no shad oh, 17. so there is obviously a divide here. will he see his shadow? that's the big question. got to wait until sunday rise, we'll see how we do. current winds speeds, notice, very haphazard either coming in out of the east, out of the south, very obvious rotation taking place here, but going through the day we will seymour of the southerly push more of that breeze kicking in out of the south or west, and that's going allow temperatures to spike all the way to the low 40's. then we crash later tonightment look at that, all the way down to the teens early tomorrow morning so we've got to worry about rapid freeze up and black ice issues
4:16 am
tomorrow. meanwhile, we do want to get a check on how thanks are actually looking throughout as we speak. for that we sends things taught meteorologist carol erickson, live for us all morning long in the mobile weather lab. good morning carol. >> if it it went groundhog day, everything should be groundhog day. still dealing with another storm, different one though and at this point in this storm, started to snow, and had transitioned over to rain temperatures are key and a lot of the temperatures are coming up above the freezing mark, lower 30's, bub not the low 30's, even in the reading area, now, in reading we've watched the temperatures go from 29 degrees about midnight to almost the freezing mark, still getting freezing rain, just about 3:00 in the morning, but now we're transitioning over to rain, fog, mist, as the temperatures through red rag coming to up about 34 degrees. we're on the schuylkill
4:17 am
expressway. i think the biggest issue that we've found here as the temperatures are higher is the standing water you want to talk about hydroplaning, that's entirely possible to do. we're traveling about 45 miles an hour, suggested speed. we see people flying past us, like we're standing still obviously either unaware or un concerned about the standing water that is everywhere. it is on the admiral wilson boulevard, it is in new jersey, it is through philadelphia, and it is on all of these roads. now, you look off to the side, and you might be able to see over there that not all of these sides the shoulders have been plowed at this point. obviously the rain on top of that, that's going to be a problem, as well. soap, as the colds air comes in tonight katie was talking about this, i think it is entirely possible, these winds will be -- got little slip on the old road? just checking with mike type err. i'll have to talk to him later
4:18 am
with his driving, which is perfect. but tonight as the winds pick up they should be drying a lot of these roads but we could be in a situation with the cold air that's coming in here that we end up with flash freeze situation on some of these roads. that is another time of high concern as we move through this evening. so, traveling along getting onto 422 right now and so far so good. put a light on, justin drabick, you can't see what that light in your eyes, right. >> that's right, carol. you have to have that light. that's huge, especially this time of morning. say hi to mike for me. we're in that lab together a lot. but carol good to see you guys are doing okay out there. but again yes ponding on the road. if you don't have the snow or the sleet or the freezing rain, you will be dealing with standing water on some of the highways. that will be an issue. just seeing plane rainout across the region, but back to up montgomery county, 309 around high are land avenue southbound. we're moving here. just some wet roads.
4:19 am
that's good thing right now. but that will probably change over the next few hours see that snow pack on the side of the highway. but all is good right now up on 309. we'll take to you new jersey, this is 42, moving as well, just some wet roads also, just in, the atlantic city expressway both northbound and southbound, there is speed restrictions down at 35 miles a per hour, on the a.c. expressway, because of the conditions. we do have a disable vehicle, i95 northbound, between cottman avenue and academy, so this may slow things down little bit. and up in milford, it is that disable tractor-trailer right lane accident between quakertown and lehigh valley. so you may opportunity get off right at the quakertown exit. and head over to 309 for an alternate route. then farther north, up the turnpike again, we have that accident just before the lehigh valley interchange. so things looking little bit rough. the farther north you go, and that's expected across region because of those icy conditions. so that's the latest here on the roads. we send it back over to ukee.
4:20 am
>> jd, thanks so. the snowstorm left its mark in the midwest. drivers braved near white out conditions in des moines iowa yesterday. and in chicago residents might see as much snow in the next 24 hours than they've seen all in the month of january. no rest for the weary in new england where another foot is expected, many places there are still digging out after last week's blizzard. and, because that weather system is moving into new england it, has delayed the murder trial of former patriots star aaron hernandez witness testimony is expected to resume on tuesday, when the murder victim's girlfriend returns to the witness stand. hernandez is accused of orchestrating the june 2013 shooting death of owed end lloyd, two alleged co-conspirators are being tried separately. >> bobbi kristina brown the singer every late singer whitney houston and bobby brown is reportedly in a medically induced coma in a georgia hospital. twenty-one year old discovered by her husband in their roswell home on saturday. brown was face down in a

bathtub and unresponsive. police searched the residence and found no signs of a struggle and no drugs. her mother, whitney houston died nearly three years ago the award winning singer was found in a bathtub the eve of the grammies in los angeles. now, bobbi kristina's father, bobby brown, released a statement saying in part loose allow for my family to deal with this matter and give my daughter the love and support she needs at this time. >> your time now 4:21. coming up on "eyewitness news" this morning, a baby born on the side after freeway. >> we'll hear from a mother about this unbelievable experience, and the unexpected delivery. that's ahead. cbs-3 mobile weather lab
4:22 am
4:23 am
4:23, and getting traffic and weather together. what you see depends on where you live? >> yes basically so dependant son the thermometer to what you end up find willing as the winds start to shift we
4:24 am
start to see milder air mass coming in. not necessarily shorts and t-shirts weather out there but mild enough it turns to snow over to mainly rain for a lofter us as the day progresses, so we'll take you out there show you what's going on first washings look at nice wide zoom on storm scan3, than is pretty storm. just in terms of its expansive necessary, basically extends all the way from new england straight back into the deep south of texas here. soap it has got plenty of moisture it is drawing from, we new from the get-go this would be moisture-rich storm. that's definitely what we're finding here. at the local level see how things have been shift g over if it was snow a loft have you zoo since seen it turn over to rain. even though it may be rain technically falling from the sky, depending on temperature it, could still be freezing on contact. so yes really does depends on your location, and where your travels will be taking you, the further south you are, the more likely it is it is just wet roads not quite as much of a concern with ice. but i would just play it safe, expect it could be slick out
4:25 am
there, folk, no matter where you are, flirting with or actually exceeding half of an inch, in vineland, for example, chaddsford, just shy of it, couple of tents every an inch in philadelphia, at the international airport, as well. so, you know, picking up on decent rain. further north you go, still finding some of the snow mixing in. so here is the thing. it is kind of slushy. it is a little slick. you will find that slippery spot here and there as go along, so you real dow just need to allow for some extra time on the commute. current temperature readings, they're kind of all over the place. go from the 20's to even the mid four's, depending on location, true sign that we are in transition mode right now with these temperatures around the region. mid 30's, though, the norm, basically through the central sliver of our region. so since your marginal enough with freezing, that's why i just want to just put it out there. expect it could be slick. and that even goes for tomorrow. because even despite bright sunshine, once we crash on the thermometer tonight, look at that, 16 in the early morning hours, could you easily see those roads refreeze. that's definitely a concern.
4:26 am
justin, over to you. >> thanks, katie. good morning everyone, seeing little bit of everything as far as the weather goes. it is impacting the roads most of the accident activity right now still to our northern viewing area, but even where we're seeing the rain, talk about speed restrictions, in part of new jersey, but his is the schuylkill expressway at city avenue. and we're moving. and again wet roads but still pockets of heavy rain, that will slow things down through the morning commute. we take you over to the ben franklin bridge, looking into new jersey, again we're moving pretty good. light traffic at this hour. but speed restrictions both ways on the bridge, 35 miles per hour, same deal on the betsy ross. move to i95 we do have disable vehicle northbound between cottman avenue and academy road. again, we have that tractor-trailer accident in the right lane on the northeast extension, milford township, between quakertown and lehigh valley. and again, farther north up to the lehigh valley interchange another accident, so again you see the icy conditions across the north. into new jersey we go, there is construction zone, i295
4:27 am
before route 168. and travel time, 476 676 looking good, 15 minutes, 202 to oaks, no delays with mass transit. sends it back over to ukee. >> all right jd, thanks so much, my man. wild finish to superbowl 49 with the patriots winning their first lombardi trophy in a decade. now the paths were down ten points entering the fourth quarter. but tom brady the game's mvp completed the come back with his fourth touchdown pass of the game. but the play most talked about will be the seahawks passe tellment on the goal line with just second left. the patriots malcolm butler intercepted the pass and the paths were able to run out the clock. patriots win 28-24 for their fourth superbowl title. how about that? it was a super brawl if you will as brady took a knee to run out the clock. seahawks linebacker bruce irwin took a swing at rob of new england and both sides started throwing punches t got ugly. irvin ejected frustration from the sea hawks, but that interception was really
4:28 am
frustrating. >> guy made a great play, you know? that's really what it comes down to. guy just made a great play. i think it was butler who made the catch. i'm not sure. >> you know, you just never can quit. that's how i got here, never quit. so if you just keep working hard and believe anything can happen. >> unbelievable play by malcolm. i mean, when i saw the interception i couldn't believe it. and it was just incredible play. what a play, a championship play, a lot of guys make them. a lot of guys did some great stuff out there. >> great game indeed. now, next year will be the golden anniversary of the superbowl and for the first time the league will not use its roman numerals. it will just be superbowl 50. as in five-zero. roman numerals are just the letter l. fox is your home for superbowl 50. >> learned something right there with the l. fun fact. all right coming up until the
4:29 am
next half hour of "eyewitness news", another check on the track of the storm keeping our eye on this morning looking live right now at rowing conditions pretty wet out there courtesy of the mobile weather lab. plus starve beloved children's show under arrest on murder charges. coming up the unusual weapon police say the ex power ranger used to kill his roommate. we'll be right back.
