a layer of snow blankets the northeast postponing a super bowl celebration in boston while another storm is threatening more snow at the end of the week. a vaccine grows potential candidates on the white house weigh in on whether parents should have a choice in vaccinating their children. and losing friends. why one group is leaving facebook behind. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, february 3rd, 2015. the storm left a blanket of snow from washington state to new england where the snow continued to fall overnight.

ten storm related deaths were reported from the northwest to the northeast. some areas got over a foot of snow and as far south as mexico. the storm has disrupted travel. since sunday more than 7300 flights have been canceled nationwide. that includes more than 500 today. it snowed overnight in maine where winter storm warnings are in effect until this morning. some new england coastal areas got up to a foot and a half of snow. that includes parts of boston which set a report for the snowiest seven day period in the city's history. kris van cleve is in boston where all of the snow has postponed a super bowl celebration. the super bowl champion new england patriots touched down in boston. the parade is scheduled for wednesday. >> i feel like i'm in the north pole or something it's crazy. >> reporter: boston was one of the last spots for the huge winter storm which dumped snow from the midwest to main.

>> reporter: after getting hit by two major snow events in a week, the focus in boston is getting all of the snow on the streets city wide. schools are closed again here tuesday as the city tries to dig itself out. >> we're asking people if you can't stay off the roads, try and take public transportation as best you can and allow us the opportunity to clean the streets. >> reporter: there's incentive to get that done quickly. another storm is brewing that forecastor say could turn into a nor'easter bringing heavy snow by thursday. spring is nowhere in sight. kris van cleve, boston. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is telling people to prepare for the bitter cold that will follow the storm. >> behind the storm we have the cold. really cold out the door here for our tuesday morning. subzero wind chills from the

midwest into the northeast. especially northern new england. 20 to 30 degrees below zero. still in the single digits to around zero. so very cold air here to kick off the month of february. that's the northeast and the midwest. check out the plains. 61 degrees in midland for a high. 58 in denver. 76 in phoenix. temperatures are running way above the average. then we look toward our next storm. the storm gets going very quickly. we head to wednesday and thursday. there will be an arctic front with snow in the midwest, rain in the southeast and late this is the next potential storm another nor'easter in a lot of the same spots that have dealt with a lot of wintry weather over the last few days. i'm meteorologist eric fisher cbs news. meet the ground hog nipped the ear of sunday prairie,

wisconsin. jimmy disagrees with most of his groundhog brethren says spring will come early. more than a dozen infants are under quarantine after a baby came down with measles. all of the children are unvaccinated because they're under the age of 1. since december more than 100 people in 14 states have been diagnosed with a highly contagious disease. the centers for disease control said the majority of measles patients are unvaccinated. now the debate over vaccinations getting political. brian webb is here in new york with more. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, allyson. 50 states require children to get vaccinations before attending school. now some potential candidates for president are weighing in on whether parents should have a choice in vaccinating their children. >> on a three-day trip to england many say is meant to solidify his foreign policy

credentials, new jersey governor kris christie was forced to solidify his statements. christie told parents he thinks parents should have a choice in whether to vaccinate children. his office put out a statement saying with a disease like measles, there is no question kids should be vaccinated. christie's sentiments were echoed by another potential candidate for the white house, republican senator rand paul said that most vaccines should be voluntary. >> i heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with mental disorders after vaccines. i'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. i think they're a good idea but i think the parents should have say. >> reporter: he clarified all of his children were vaccinated. former secretary of state

hillary clinton saw it as an opportunity to take a shot at the gop tweeting last night, the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccines work. let's protect all our kids #grandmothersknowbest. health experts urged people to vaccinate their children against all diseases especially measles. >> the science is clear. study after study have shown that there are no serious long-term adverse effects from measles. it can hurt your arm, you can have a fever after but the vaccine is safe and effective. >> reporter: experts also say that choosing not to vaccinate your child could put other children at risks. while new jersey where chris christie's governor mandates children receive measles vaccine, it is one of 20 states allowing parents to opt out of vaccinations with a waiver. allyson. >> that's brian webb here in new

york. thank you, brian. president obama's on a collision course with congress this morning over his proposed budget. republicans say the record $4 trillion spending blueprint is a non-starter. the plan raises taxes on corporations and the wealthy while boosting tax credits for families and the working poor. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> reporter: allyson, good morning. republicans are calling the bulk of this budget more of the same failed obama policies that don't address the nation's long-term fiscal problems but when it comes to certain areas, including defense and infrastructure, there are some glimmers of hope for agreement. >> we've got some fundamental choices to make about the kind of country we want to be. >> reporter: president obama sent a less than receptive congress a record $4 trillion budget monday that calls for a 7% increase in defense and domestic spending. the 2016 budget restores some automatic cuts triggered by a 2011 budget deal. >> i want to work with congress to replace mindless austerity

with smart investments that strengthen america. >> reporter: his plan would raise defense spending to $585 billion with major investments in cyber security. it would be the highest defense spending in u.s. history with the lowest war spending since 2002. republicans here on capitol hill have already blasted part of the plan to hike taxes on the woelty, to fund $277 billion in tax breaks. >> it is totally acceptable for west virginians and all-americans to live within their means while the federal government continues to allow its spending and debt to run rampant. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell sloued the gop will work to pass the serious kind of budge gets that roots out and reforms wasteful spending. there are some areas where the president and republicans say they could work together including a $478 billion proposal to repair highways

on the cbs "moneywatch," google may go bumper to bumper with uber in an embarrassing mixup in a super bowl ad. >> reporter: uber the car service app, looks to be facing some stiff competition from one of its biggest investors, fwoogle. google is preparing to offer its own ride sharing service likely to go along with the driverless car project it's been working on. uber is developing its own driverless vehicle. google invested $258 million in uber in august of 2013. stocks on wall street opened higher. the dow gained 196 points. the s&p finished 25 points higher. the nasdaq rose 41 points. oil prices rose for the third day. it finished the day $1.33 higher at $49.57 a barrel.

that is the highest it's been in a month. the new york stock exchange plans to de-list shares of the retailer radio shack. radio shack's been struggling and warned last year it may file for bankruptcy. news that it might not be able to find a long-term plan to stay afloat sent its stock price dramatically lower. shares fell 13% yesterday. we now have the final figures for the super bowl weekend box office and the take for "american sniper" has been revised down. originally it was estimated sniper brought in 39.5 million, a record but the clint eastwood film sold $30.7 million in tickets. that leaves 2008 hannah montana, miley cyrus, the best of both worlds the top earner against nfl's big game. papa john's commercial gets burned. they congratulated the seattle
