>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". now at 11:00 o'clock danger on the roads. icy conditions all across the area lead to treacherous travel sending this car off the road and into the woods. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. we have a few school closings already tonight because of this weather. >> you will see those at the

bottom of your screen and on cbsphilly.com. we want to begin with breaking news and video just in of a deadly crash on what may have been a very slippery new jersey turnpike. this is eyewitness video from cranbury township. we've learned one person was killed. more than 40 injured in this crash. it involves more than 15 vehicles. this video from our traffic camera shows the aftermath of that accident. the southbound lanes remain closed tonight while the crash is being investigateed. and we do know icy conditions played a role in this crash tonight in montgomery county. this happened on route 422 in lower pottsgrove a couple of hours ago. a car ended up going off the road and down an embankment into a ditch. this happened in the westbound lanes just past the sainted toga exit. >> police arrived on location and found one vehicle down an embankment which had actually been struck by another vehicle which was found further down the road. >> no one was injured in the

crash. it was just one of a number of crashes all around the area tonight. meteorologist kathy orr is live outside our cbs3 studios in the spring garden section with a closer look at the icy conditions we're facing right now. kathy. right now jess, we're seeing a little bit of an icy mist out here. a freezing drizzle but this is what we're going to be waking up to. if your car spent any time outside this evening or overnight a glaze of ice. i've been working on this windshield and you can see how hard it is to get this off. this is just a small accumulation of ice even difficult to get the door open so expect it to be very difficult come tomorrow morning with more icy conditions expected overnight tonight. now take look at storm scan3. we still have that winter weather advisory in effect for most of the the region through tomorrow morning especially through the philadelphia area. this is through 6am i want to draw your attention to the regional view of our radar because you can see that purple and also that pink through

baltimore and washington, that's headed up the i-95 corridor. so in philadelphia our adjacent suburbs and even through south jersey and delaware, i do expect a little more light snow mixing with some freezing rain and sleet during the early morning hours. in the lehigh valley in our northern and western suburbs lyle snow and sleet. still some icy conditions will remain. a few more snow showers are expected and then that slowly will dissipate from north to south over the course of the overnight but for philadelphia south and east the hazards will continue with life freezing rain changing over to little bit of snow. icy sidewalks, parking lots a glaze on area cars and also of course the sidewalks and the untreated surfaces. a little bit of a dusting here and there of snow i'm not expecting much in the way of that. take look at the future temperatures. we are well below freezing right now and we will stay that way until 10, 11:00 o'clock tomorrow morning when most of the area is experiencing temperatures right above freezing. now coming up, we'll talk about more smo in the nor cast.

"eyewitness news" this morning gets started at 4:30 a.m. new at 11:00 o'clock tonight a vigil to remember a millersville university student who was found dead in her dorm room. tonight her boyfriend is facing charges of homicide. 18-year-old carli hall of chadds ford was found yesterday morning morning. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is at millersville for us tonight. ♪ >> reporter: hundreds of students braced the monday night freezing rain to remember 18-year-old carli hall and asked the question why?

>> students marched with the school flag just blocks from where police found hall strangled to death early sunday morning. her boyfriend gregorio ostrage is behind bars and the two argued before he killed her. police found her performing cpr on the 1884 old. >> cpr was i believe completely fake and she had been dead for -- for hours probably before that. >> reporter: especially the big shot it happened a floor below us. >> this man lives upstairs from the scene of the crime and his fellow students wonder what could have been done to prevent hall's death. >> you never think something like that is going to be happened. >> the statue is covered on campus right now to remember carli hall. many students never seen met the freshman but one student told us she feels it's her job to help raise money for carli's family. >> not only have we lost one of our students but we've lost her in such a terrible way.

she's setting up a gofundme page to pay for her funeral. a live gone way too soon. >> burns says the extra money raise will go to the local animal shelter where hall volunteered. david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". breaking news right now from delaware where flames have torn through a row home trapping a 52-year-old man there in wilmington that. man was rushed from north market and east 39th street in critical condition we're told. there were two others who had trouble breathing at the scene. they are said to be stable and a nine-year-old also had to be checked out but was not harmed. we'll have updates for you on our website cbsphilly.com. new information tonight after a woman is attacked in the middle of date and a busy septa station in center city. our natasha brown tells us plea are reviewing surveillance video in hopes dent filing her attacker. >> reporter: the incident happened at the jefferson septa station at 1:20 monday

afternoon. an hour when the station is bustling with passengers. sources tell "eyewitness news" the woman willing went with a man to a secluded area of the platform near the tracks and when she resurfaced she was running to look for hem. the victim ran from the platform here on to the concourse and flagged down a passenger for help. >> the victim said she had been beaten and her face reportedly showed visible signs of injuries. she was rushed to the hospital after being physically assaulted and now police are combing through surveillance video hoping to get some glimpse of her attacker. >> that's surprising because it's supposed to be all those cameras and people are supposed to call for help when things like that happen. >> reporter: passengers were stunned to hear of the mid afternoon attack and say they're all on guard. >> cell phones are away. bags are closed. usually, you know, looking straight forward. things like that. just being aware of what's going on around you. report roar police say the incident remains under investigation. in center city, natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". take a good look the this

surveillance video. this is from a lounge social club on mcallister street in feltonville from january 24th. police are looking to identify four people in this video. one man, three women all are persons of interest in a homicide also on mack alice story treat. police say after this video was recorded a 34-year-old man was shot several times and he was found slumped over a steering wheel of a car nearby. >> hopefully get some -- gather additional information and find out who is responsible for this homicide. >> police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. well new tonight, a vigil for bobbi kristina brown. ♪ >> family and friends gathered with members of the public outside of atlanta georgia to pray for the recovery of that 21-year-old. their vigil called shining a light for healing.

bobbi kristina the only child of the late whitney houston and poke brown at emory university hospital in atlanta. she was found up responsive in a bathtub at her home last weekend weekend. back at home a burglar is free on the mainline might have residents ting and turning in their beds tonight. we know that three homes in the garrett hill section of radnor township were hit just a few hours apart. police say it appears that the suspect or suspects stayed on the first floor of those homes and focused on easy to carry items like purses and cell phones and laptops. the worst part investigators say all this happened while familyies slept upstairs. >> certainly would not want someone to be in my house. i would feel very nervous about that. >> these guys could be pros. they could be desperate. they could addicted to drugs. we don't to want you have get hurt or cell phone or laptop that can easing and replaced. >> radnor police say an alert neighbor could help crack the case. anyone who sees anything out of the ordinary in the neighborhood is urged to contact police. new information tonight on

the measles. it turns out a potential case in lancaster county is not the measles. lab results came back late today as negative. but the outbreak does continue to spread at least 166 cases have been reported in 18 states and washington d.c. and today georgia reporter its first case since 2012. we set up a measles resource guide on cbsphilly.com. click on the health tab on our home page. we've set up useful things to departments of health as well as the cdc. docket options are expected to resume at the first state animal center and spca in sent county delaware. officials were concerned about the spread of the flu after the deaths of three dogs. tests now show none had canine flu. two had pneumonia and a third died from surgery complications. >> responsible and shut down we did not want to pass this out in the community and our vets are confident that our animals that we'll up for adoption are free and clear of any virus.

130 dogs are waiting to be adoptedadopted in addition to other animals at the center in camden, delaware. well new tonight high drama in los angeles after a suspect leads police and high-immediate chase. the driver who was armed traveled for several miles throughout la until that crash. he then got out of the car robbed this woman at gun point and eventually fled on foot before police eventually took that man down. what a night there. police did fire shots but there's no word on if that suspect may have been hit. how safe are you inside your favorite stores and restaurants? >> same system that's bringing freezing rain to our area is createing a historic situation in boston. two more feet of snow fell there today. the city has now broken a record for the most snow received in a 30-day period. that would be 61.6-inches. the state's governor says state workers have removed enough snow to phil gillette stadium 90 times over. trollies and trains in boston have shut down as a result. roofs and detectives are

collapsing under that heavy weight of the snow. drew peterson the man convicted of killing one wife and suspected in the disappearance of another is now accused of trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars. the former suburban chicago police officer did not enter a plea. his attorney called the whole thing quote absurd. peterson was sentenced to thought years in prison back in 2012. one of the big selling points of the jeep rank blear is the fact the doors will come off. but police in new jersey say they come off a little bit too easy making them appealing to robbers looking to make quick buck. take look at some surveillance video showing a theft in progress. in fact police are still looking for the man in this tape. last week, six jeep owners in vineland reported their doors had been stolen. police say that used doors can sell for as much as 300 bucks and replacing them with new ones costs about a thus sand dollars. >> doors has a peg that goes

right in there and they screw right and you can put a nut on the bottom of them. that's really all that holds it in. somebody definitely knows jeeps because they spent only about five minutes here to take both doors. >> pretty outrageous. vineland police are looking for tips tonight. they're asking anyone with any information to give them a call. okay. now to some surveillance videos that we show you really on the news all the time. they look just like this. out of control cars crashing into storefronts or restaurants hitting customers workers leaving people injured. sometimes dead. this kind of thing jessica can happen any time anywhere. it's awful scare row. >> it's very scary stuff. i decideed to investigate are these types of accidents really on the rise? and what's being done to prevent them and also to protect you? watch as this car smashes no a store. a clerk screaming a mid the wreckage. >> just like horrific. >> an estimated 60 times a day a

driver strikes a building. >> people everywhere, glass everywhere. >> cars can come from anywhere. they fly off the road. and sometimes the car comes from a parking space right in front of the store. like at de ja vu consignment in toms riff in 2012. a driver trying to park crashed through the front door. own are in kim was inside. >> i was standing in the showroom fixing some racks and all of a sudden a car came crashing through the window and it missed me by a few feet. you don't know if the car is going to stop or keep coming in. >> these parking spaces were they face a building they remind me of a loaded gun. >> in 2008 car hit mark wright inside this maryland 7-eleven. ripping three of four knee ligaments. >> my surgeon said this is the kind of injury that we see coming back from iraq or afghanistan. >> over the months of rehab wright wondered -- >> what is going on with this kind of an accident.

>> i started googling. >> way found shocked him. hundreds of storefront crashes every year across the u.s. millions in property damage. people maimed and killed. >> these are real human beings that are being struck every single day. >> more people getting killed in this kind of accident than there were in terrorist accidents in the united states. >> that's rob rider. he and mark started the volunteer storefront safety council after discovering no government agency was tracking these crashes. no one knew how widespread the prob 13 and 2014, rob found media reports of 6,000 storefront crashes. he evident estimates the real number of crashes is more than triple that. >> you're at risk wherever you live work, play, shop, and eat dinner. if you look where you're eating your hamburger there are safer places and less safe places. you need to start paying attention. >> who is crashing into storefronts. drunk drivers, young drivers are elderly people prone to

mistaking the gas for the brake. >> all you need is to do is install some sort of a barrier. >> concrete pillars called bollards can stop a car. you see them all around including at many wawa stores. the company told "eyewitness news" quote since installing bollards we've experienced a significant decline in the number of such incidents. back in toms river kim reopened reopened. she's attendant in a strip malls and cars still park right outside her front door. >> do you worry about that. >> i do. wee hear a loud car or truck i think that's going to come through the win do. >> at the store where mark was hurt, there are no bollards. cars are still aimed at customers and employees. >> if you're going to have that, for crying out protect them. >> rider who consults for bowl lard manufacturers says these crashes are almost always preventible and he says in these types of places, he always avoids sitting at the front near the window and also on sidewalk cafes. >> sure. you want to buy yourself as much

time as you possibly can. >> and that's right. and as much space. you hate to be on alert all the time but you have to be aware of what's happening around you. >> it's frightening. sure. >> update now on breaking news. more eyewitness video just in to us this one showing smoke billowing from the scene of that deadly pileup on the new jersey turnpike. we know at least one person was killed in this accident. more than 40 hurt in the pileup involving more than 15 vehicles in cranbury township. the southbound lanes remain closed as state troopers investigate right now you see the smoke. right now no word on if weather played a role. stay with "eyewitness news" that are more updates on this. that's up in middlesex county. the roads probably pretty slick up there. >> we have blasts of freezing drizzle and freezing rain. that area got the same thing. take look at storm scan3. we'll take you back in time through the evening. that accident happening between about eight and 9:00 o'clock if we zoom into storm scan3 you can see right at the turnpike that patch of freezing rain crossing

it and create something big problems in that area where we have the accident in the pile up. so weather could have played a role in this creating very slippery conditions. it only take a glaze arc trace of ice to create that. so we hope they get to the bottom of that. in our weather we're looking at some freezing rain. look at this. joyce jack frost big boulder. iced over. they're seeing a little bit of snow right now but their winter weather advisory will be allowed to expire around midnight. in center city philadelphia dry for now but another area of precipitation will be moving in as snow and some sleet so if you haven't gotten any precipitation yet this evening or if you've taken a break, we have one more round to go. our "eyewitness weather" watchers are saying light snow in pottstown also icy conditions with freezing drizzle in upper darby even collingswood. temperatures well below freezing and they will stay that way until late tomorrow morning. warren is reporting in chalfont partly cloudy skies and a temperature of only 28 degrees. you can see in delaware we're

seeing a temperature of 28ed to -- 28 as well. greg reporting in marshaltown but right now he's seeing a little bit of freezing precipitation. freezing mist and there was a glaze over the cars. you are also going to be seeing a little bit of snow and sleet moving your way. on storm scan3 already looking at it. you can see a patch right along that i-95 corridor. heading toward wilmington as we speak. so that's some snow it's some heat sleet an little bit of freezing rain all of this is moving toward through northeast through coatesville along route 1 heading toward the east through will morning ton along 95. this is going to be little bit of ice an little bit of snow. one more batch moving northeast during the overnight. temperatures well below freezing and they'll stay that way 20s to the west. some 30s to the south. that mild air will wait to move in till later tomorrow morning. once this system passes to our south. tomorrow we see some clearing skies and temperatures actually going above freezing. so any of this ice will be

melting. that's the good news. wednesday we catch a break with partlypartlypartly sun into skies. another clipper swings to our north on thursday. in the wake of that clipper another blast of arctic air begins on friday. continues into valentine's day. we could be seeing the coldest air of the season. so thursday, some snow showers. saturday night another chance of snow showers. sunday could be the coldest day of the winter season. so overnight we have another round of patchy freezing drizzle changing to light snow. low temperature 27. the high tomorrow 39. getting above freezing late in the morning. valentine's day yeah, cold enough to cuddle temperature only 28. on the exclusive i wet weather seven day forecast look at sunday. only 19. 27 by monday. that's a look at the seven day forecast. we'll be back with beasley and sports right after
