♪ "eyewitness news" begins at 11:00 o'clock with breaking news tonight a car crash has claimed the life of the long-time 60 minutes correspond bob simon. his career with cbs news spanned five decades taking him around the world and earning him countless awards. good evening, i'm chris pay. >> i'm jessica dean. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live in our sat center with more on the crash and simon's expansive career. todd. >> reporter: jessica reporter bob simon was killed tonight in a car crash in manhattan when

the liver row car he was in crashed no another vehicle. the 73-year-old was riding in the back seat. according to police the driver of the lincoln town karzai mon was in hit another car that was stopped at a red light. simon was found unconscious and unresponsive by emergency personnel just before 7:00 tonight with injuries to his head and torso. he was taken to st. luke's roosevelt hospital where he was pronounced dead. the broadcaster covered some of the biggest events over the past 50 years. in 1991 simon and his crew were released by iraqi government after being held captive for almost six weeks. they were taken hostage during their coverage of the gulf war. simon and his crew suffered through hard ships including beatings and threats. >> the bridge honors the grand dragon. kkk. >> simon as a correspondent for 60 minutes reported on the movie selma. he also covered the vietnam nem war during his storied career. >> and late tonight the exec

explosives this training kit foreclose seive devices was found in a checked back in hay hame shocking items that have been packed in luggage across the country. but at philadelphia international airport's terminal a, they're spotted by an in line auto mated system. >> how safe should passengers feel on their planes as a result of having this system? >> they should foal very safe. state of the art equipment report roar tsa mike mccarthy took "eyewitness news" where no other philadelphia station has gone behind the scenes of the security structure that keeps us safe. >> step one, the conveyor belt. our camera shows i was bag's journey from the ticket counter to the runway about a quarter mile long. >> it does that in 10 to 15 minutes. if there are no alarms. about the same amount of time it takes a passenger to get through screening. >> step two potential harms. conveyor bell carries each bag through an explosive detention system which generates an image of wants inside like ones taken of carry on bags but high tech and 3d like a cat scan.

so secret we're in the allowed to show them to you. then using a sophisticated algorithm it looks for potential threats. if the finds one that bag is diverted from the main conveyor belt. so human eyes can take a closer look. this is the tsa control room where there's a camera on every bag that moves through the system. if there's a threat, this is where it's found. these highly trained tsa experts evaluate the images. if they decide the bag's contents are safe it moves along. but if they're not convinced it's on to step three. the inspection room. this is where bags are searched by hand by tsa agents like jonathan emery. >> you rely on the machine to actually, you know, make certain things but you also rely on your experts to look around and check the bag. >> this time jonathan finds no threat. after placing a notice of inspection in the bag, he returns it to the conveyor belt where it's handed off to the airlines.

one out of every four bags that enters this system at terminal a is given this extra scrutiny. few pose actual threats. but the tsa federal security director derek starks says his team stays alert. >> we evolve as the threat see evolve and we put in protocol to match the threat so we adapt. >> for travelers in philadelphia, it means piece of mind and a safer on time trip. >> i feel more comfortable with our choice of how they're screening the bags. >> as frequent flyer, i'm so happy that the tsa is taking the steps necessary to ensure our safety so you know, makes me feel very safe. terminals d and e at philadelphia international airport are installing their own auto mated explosive detection systems. they hope to have those up and running by the fall. just really interesting stuff to see it from that perspective you just know when you drop it off. you got to think they've got to be able to process so many bags. >> a lot of bags. between 500 an thousand per hour

the murder trial for the man accuse evidence killing real life american sniper chris kyle began today in texas. kyle is the former navy seal depicted in the oscar nominated film. 27-year-old eddie ray routh charged with killing kyle and his friend chad littlefield at a north tech text gun range in 2013. kyle's widow tai was the first witness and she was i meg at on the stand. the defense is arguing that routh had a long history of mental illness and in a psychotic state at the time of the killing. >> a parking dispute in north carolina leads to the shooting death of three muslim students. 46-year-old craig hicks appeared

>> it will be gradual but the full impact is over the weekend. take look outside where temperatures are falling. not so bad just yet but it will be in center city philadelphia we're looking at temperatures that are falling into the 30s and eventually into the 20s. this is the view from campbell's field, of course, of the bridge. we have high clouds rolling in on storm scan3 we have a few flurries. they are few and far between. as the clipper approaches the delaware valley just mainly cloud cover across the region right now but it is going to be much more than that over the course of the weekend. so we see some clouds rolling in. a few flurries especially to the north. and some colder air and that will set the stage for a brutally cold weekend. our "eyewitness weather" watchers are saying the barometric pressure is falling. that means the storm system is approaching. temperatures are falling in some spots as well. right now frank is reporting a temperature of 25 degrees in richboro. the skies partly cloudy at this point. not much wind until that clipper passes tomorrow. greg says in marshaltown

delaware 30 degrees with some clouds. a faint breeze. the calm before the clipper arrives mostly cloudy skies in his neck of the woods. go to the north and west, where we have a temperature of only 25 degrees. eileen is saying light winds in gilbertville and right now the pressure is instead deem elsewhere across the delaware valley temperatures are mainly in the 20s. 29 in philadelphia. allentown 28. pound pocono 24. this is seasonably cold. look what's coming. this core of cold air in minneapolis and even international falls these are temperatures five to close to five below but add that wind that's gusting to about 30, 40 miles an hour and it feels like 24 below in international falls winnipeg it feels like 28 below and eventually that will be moving our way. that with clipper that you be two. tonight we'll watch this clipper approach and it moves through tomorrow afternoon. behind this, some very cold arctic air and that could create few localized squalls that could reduce visible late in the afternoon but they will be few

and far between. then friday we see very cold conditions. saturday this is more poe 10 storm. a better chance of light snow for your valentine. but behind this we're talking about polar air and that means wind chills will go well below zero. for friday for the first round zero to 10 below for the morning wind chill. by sunday five to 15 below in the morning and then monday 10 to 20 degrees below zero with wind chills this is dangerously cold. this is what's going to happen you see a peace of that polar vortex coming south again. the core of the cold air does make it over our region. so sunday into monday the coldest air since the mid 90's. so nearly 20 years. this is what we're talking about about. monday morning the morning slow is five. the record low two set back in 1888. that's how far back you have to go for that record. the morning wind chill 15 degrees below zero. so it is going to be very cold around here. clouds increase overnight with our clipper arriving.
