this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday february 12th 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. veteran cbs news correspondent bob simon is being remembered the morning as a reporter's reporter. a gifted writer who reported from the most dangerous places on earth. simon was killed last night in a car accident here in new york city. he was a passenger in a cab that hit another car that had stopped at a traffic light. cbs news anchor scott pelley announced simon's death in a special report. >> his body of work earned bob too many journal is tick medals to count here tonight. his daughter tania is a producer and tonight our thoughts are with tania and bob's family and his many many friends. >> during his 47 years here at cbs news simon reported on

everything from riots to movies but it was as a foreign correspondent that simon made his name. kris van cleave reports on simon's remarkable career. >> i'm bob simon. >> general, call me a fool. >> no i won't. >> reporter: bob simon was a legendary news man, a gifted storyteller, a scholar and one time foreign service officer with that distinct voice of truth. >> but he looked so dashing. he was the epitome of a foreign correspondent. he was brave. he would go places where you probably shouldn't have gone. >> reporter: simon came to cbs news in 1967. four years later he moved to saigon to cover the vietnam war. he was one of the last continues to leave as it fell. he built a career in war zones around the world. the falklands, yugoslavia

somalia, including every decade. >> tel a viv was created by sadness, sadness beyond works. >> reporter: he wrenlt he was risking his life along the way. >> we saw a jeep in the distance, an iraqi army jeep and they took us away. >> reporter: during the opening days of the first gulf in 1991. simon and three members were taken prisoner by the iraqi military and held as p.o.w.s in iraqi prisons for 40 days. >> has this changed you? >> yeah. >> how? >> i don't know. too early to tell. >> reporter: simon joined "60 minutes" in 1996. this was his 19th season on the broadcast, reporting last week on "selma." he won 40 emmy awards including this one about poor members who constructed their instruments out of trash. >> just look and listen. ♪

"60 minutes" producer jeff prager praised his friend. >> he loved what he does. a body of work that i think is difficult to match. >> bob simon was 73. kris van cleave, cbs news new york. reaction to simon's death is pouring in from journalists who remember him for his lifetime of contributions to news and his writing. on twitter cnn's candy crowley called simon a courageous no-nonsense reporter with a touch of poet. larry king recalled him as a great reporter and wonderful man. shortly after learning of his death, cnn host and "60 minutes" contributor anderson cooper called simon a warrior of poet.

against isis including use of ground troops. here on capitol hill that plan is coming under fire both from those who believe he needs do more and those that believe the heavy lifting in this war, the ground battle, should but be the u.s. it's now up to congress to debate and pass president obama's proposeal to use military action against militants. they'll soon hold hearings where the white house is expected to lay out its strategy and still congress could try to change the resolution. >> as a nation we need to ask the difficult and necessary questions about when why, and how we use military force. >> the president's plan opens the door to using american ground troops. it rules out so called enduring offensive operations action beyond three years for which another vote would be needed but lawmakers on both sides are concerned and say they wayment

details before they'll authorize support. >> we provide it. we can't police a region that won't police itself. >> some republicans say the plan doesn't go far enough. >> the president's point is he wants to dismantle and destroy isis. i haven't seen a strategy yet that i think will accomplish that. >> stressing the threat from isis extends to the u.s. homeland the president referred to the four american hoss tax, most recently 26-year-old aid - worker kayla mueller. the draft calls for isis with the murders and ground force infusion operations. now, along with rescue operations the president said this resolution also allows him to use special forces to take military action against isis leaders. lauren? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thanks, susan. the ongoing battle over the keystone xl oil pipeline is coming to a head. congress sent president obama a bill authorizing construction of the pipeline.

the house passed the measure yesterday, endorsing a bill already passed by the senate. the president has threatened to veto the measure. neither chamber has enough votes to overcome a presidential veto. this morning the news about the weather is all about the cold. an arctic front with dangerous windchills is moving over the upper midwest and headed east. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the potentially record braking freeze. >> a cold front is kicking off here, minnesota, portions of-month-old. could feel as cold as 25 below zero, maybe as low as 40 below. ufl this behind a front will bring some scattered snow showers across the northeast as well as we head toward the evening. not anticipating a lot but it does deliver a shot of the chilly air. looking for the highs in the single digits. 40s in a place like atlanta, but

we look into the north heading into the weekend. a big cold blast that's challenged records. high temps, below zero on saturday and the 20s starting to move their way south. the real brunt of all this is on sunday. highs in the 40s in florida. 30s around atlanta. they say stuck around the freezing mark. lots of single digits and teens. we'll be challenging and likely breaking a few records with that. as that cold moves in a large storm develops this one has the potential to become a blizzard for eastern new england by saturday night. places that are absolutely buried could see more than a foot of snow again. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. coming up on the "morning news," the "american sniper" trial. testimony begins in the matter of the killing of sniper chris kyle. and multiple winners in last night's powerball drawing. this is the "cbs morning news." but it won't cause me discomfort.

investigating whether religion played a role in a triple murder tuesday. the three victims were muslim and the accused gunman describes himself as a gun toting atheist. vicente arenas reports. >> reporter: the killings were mourned across the world with the hashtag muslim lives matter. authorities say accused killer craig steven hicks is cooperating in the triple murder investigation. >> i just heard gunshots. i don't know what building it came from, but i heard kids screaming. >> reporter: police say gunfire broke out after a dispute over a parking space. all three had earned undergrad honors at nc state. barakat was in his second year. >> we're still in a state of shock and will never be able to make sense of this horrendous

tragedy. we ask that the authorities investigate these senseless and heinous murders as a hate crime. >> investigators say they have not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime and the fbi has been called in. karen hicks is the suspect's wife. >> i can't say with the absolute believe that this was related to religion but was the long standing dispute over parking my husband had with the neighbor. >> hicks was a student at a tech school. his face page says he's an ordained atheist minister. his neighbor said he was always angry. >> he always had issues with noise in the neighborhood and parking. >> he's being held without bond. vicente arenas cbs news chapel

hills, north carolina. a jury in texas will hear the second day in the testimony of the "american sniper" murder trial. a lawyer made a stance. he said eddie ray routh's psychosis was apparent teen the victims. >> chris kyle was sitting in the driver's seat on his cell phone and he texted chad littlefield sitting right next to him. he texted to him, this dude is straight up nuts. >> reporter: but the prosecutor said the former marine knew right from wrong. they heard emotional testimony from kyle's widow about his passion for helping veterans. >> straight ahead, overnight, millionaires. there are several grand prize winners in last night's powerball drawing. we'll tell you where. and streaming snafu. stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. the jackpot, $564 million, is the fifth largest lottery prize in u.s. history. the winning jackpot tickets were sold in north carolina texas, and puerto rico. the winning numbers are -- there were 17 other tickets with five winning numbers, but not the power ball numbers, and those tickets are worth $1 million. it was a quiet trading day on wall street. the dow finished about 6 points lower, the s&p was flat. the naz diamondback rose about 13 points. the former korean air executive who threw a tantrum over how she was served nuts was sentenced to a year in prison this morning. she was the daughter of the korean air chairman.
