orter matt rivers live outside wells fargo center where the a actual convention will be held, matt. >> reporter: chris and jessica, mess of the convention's activities will be held here at the wells fargo center, with that said the impact of the convention will not only felt here within city boundaries but across southeastern pennsylvania. >> the dnc will host its 2016 democratic national convention in the city of brotherly love, wonderful city of philadelphia. >> wow. >> reporter: thursday with the victory lap of sorts after what mayor nutter described as years of hard work. >> we're ready to make history again for 2016 democratic national convention. >> reporter: dnc officials called philly a thriving city and chose it over new york city and columbus, ohio, for three reasons. the easy access to hotels room in center city, tight security and the ability to raise money. mayor nutter says 70 to 80 million-dollar will have to be raise todd pay for this convention all through private donors.

officials say the expected economic boost from visitors is worth the work. >> they will shop here, they will dine here, they will sleep here. >> great day for the the city. it is also great for region. >> reporter: montgomery county commissioner josh shapiro is a democrat, part of the team that brought the convention here. he said influx of people and cash in philadelphia is good for the suburbs too. >> people will go to the king of prussia mall, they will walk around valley forge national park, they will walk main streets in skippack. >> reporter: economic is a side this matter is politically as well. democrats see a philly convention as a way to bolster their presidential candidate in a swing state. >> philadelphia city vote alone and region's vote is really significant if not determining who wins a state. >> we vote. we put the president in. so, i think with the next election we will be very important. >> reporter: the point of reference president obama only carried the state of pennsylvania by five points or so back in 2012, so in a democratic strong hold like philadelphia a, a potential

democratic presidential candidate need every vote they can get. by putting the dnc here in philadelphia dnc officials are hoping to secure those votes. we are hive in south philadelphia tonight matt rivers for "eyewitness news". >> matt, thank you. the city of philadelphia a over came stiff competition win the right to host this convention. the fail a beat out brooklyn, new york and columbus, ohio. the other two finalist for 2016. so why philadelphia? i spoke with debbie wasserman shut chair of the democratic national committee who answer that had questions and talks about the the philly locations the dnc will use next year. >> xfinity live will be a real focal point for us. we will be very involved at the convention center, i had a chance to go to constitution hall with governor rendell and take a look at the the place where our country was born as a backdrop in philadelphia a, being in the cradle of american democracy.

>> wasserman schultz added philly got top marks on the main cry tear, yeah logistics resources and security. mayor nutter says it will cost between 70 and 80 million-dollar to stage the convention but the pay out to the city could triple that e very. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter is live at the art museum with that part of the coverage tonight walt. >> reporter: chris, as you might expect the convention won't just bring delegates but it will bring dollars hundreds of millions of dollars into the city and it will bring jobs. even better news those jobs created by the convention expected to stay and multiply in the years going forward. >> we expect the economic impact with the democratic national convention somewhere between 170,000,225 250 million. >> reporter: long before the first delegate cast a vote in the wells fargo center experts say that you candy claire philadelphia the economic winner, thanks to the decision to hold the dnc here.

>> business gets business, and something like this is world stage and philadelphia will show beautifully because it is a magnificent city. >> reporter: one glowing economic indicator he expects more than 1100 hotel rooms in center city, 17,000 city wide and possibly 30 to 70,000 across the region will all be filled. >> three very important markets. the business people who were here for the convention, the delegates and their guests themselves and 15,000 media. >> reporter: more ill says the rnc in 2,000 brought in between 200, and $400 million. beyond that economic wind fall, long after the last candidate has departed the biggest gift is that jobs created by the convention will stay and multiply going forward. >> the economic impact isn't just for the days of the convention. the pay off is really down the

line. >> reporter: are while the convention price tag is expected to be 70 to $80 million, the mayor says all of that is expect to be raised privately so that in the end for the dnc the taxpayer will have have to pay little, if any, of the tab. live from center city, i'm walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you very much. philadelphians overall should benefit from the dnc but ones most affected by the convention are those who live around the wells fargo center. we spoke with residents in the area around the stadium complex and their response overwhelmingly was positive. >> as long as there is a adequate protection because we had the convention here before. as long as everything is like, i think positive for the neighborhood so it goodies. >> we spoke with a lot of people today and to a person they are not worried about the additional traffic they say that they deal with a lot of traffic all the time. it is hosted the republican convention in 2,000

now wells fargo center is getting it turn to host democratic convention. in the cbs-3 tr exclusive interview our noel mcclaren spoke with the screen manager of the wells fargo center on getting to the big event. >> would you say this is one of the biggest things that happened to the wells fargo center since you have been general manager. >> oh, absolutely. >> reporter: steps to hosting thousands of democrats into the wells fargo center are plentiful. in comparison with prepping for a sixers game or flyers game, what is it like to prepare for the national convention or national conventions. >> it will be a long preparation period. we will have out and out 15 months or so. >> reporter: in an exclusive tv interview with "eyewitness news" general manager matt holman says his team hit the ground running the second he got the news this morning. step one make sure you have extra staff on hand. >> probably double that for something like dnc. the magnitude of the event. there is so many different moving parts. >> reporter: he says they will have to work closely with the secret service and city to

philadelphia tonight the community there is in grief when a two-year old is hit and killed by a septa trolley today this happened this afternoon at acorner of north 51st street and lancaster avenue. our pat ciarrocchi spoke with eyewitnesses at the scene to find out more. >> reporter: just beyond yellow police tape you could sianni hear the anguish. a two-year old girl had been struck by a septa trolley just before 1:00 along lancaster avenue at 51st. trolley passenger asia houston told us that the toddler ran out into the street. >> i ran over, her body was between both of the trolleys wheels. >> reporter: septa officials have learned that the girl was with a female guardian. >> i don't know how he got away from them but his body was just lifeless. >> reporter: when fire rescue

paid sick leave becomes law in philadelphia after two vetoes mayor michael nut are sign the bill into law today. this bill provides an hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours of work and ate police to business was at least ten employees. smaller businesses will allow job protection for workers to take five unpaid sick days this law will take effect in 90 days. well new at 6:00, someone in our area has a winning power ball lottery ticket worth one million-dollar, that ticket was sold at a store in glen mills, delaware county.
