2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning bone-rattling bitter cold grips an area from the upper midwest to inland. it promises to fill subzero windchills through the weekend. some will break cold records from decades. it stretches from the canadian border to the gulf coast. and meteorologist eric fisher from our boston station wbz says it's not just the cold to worry about. another punishing winter storm is on the way. >> a very cold day to end out the week. it could feel as cold as 35 below zero out the door. this is just the beginning. colder air is on the way. 25 below at international falls, 4 below in chicago. team teens getting down into nashville. as we look at high temps, the cold air in the northeast. frigid air. a few places will stay below

zero. by sunday we're looking at 30s and 40s in the southeast. the panhandle looking into freezes. with that another huge storm. we've got blizzard watches out for much of down east maine and along the coast. this is where we get heavy snow and wind that starts to pick up on valentine's day. it picks up on sunday. that's where we see the strongest winds. a foot of snow in boston bangor places have already shattered records for snow in the last few weeks. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. residents of cape cod are preparing for the winter storm. beside the cold and snow strong surf. high winds as high as 65 miles an hour. flooding is also possible. areas have been hit by impressive storms. in boston where the snow isfrustration is as high as snow more is expected this weekend.

can see them. >> you have to cross further sbeer the street, so that makes it difficult. >> even removing it is challenging. >> the traffic. the foot traffic and people driving. especially around rush hour it was pretty crazy. >> how long does it take? >> depending on the size of the snow bank i would say maybe an hour or two. >> and with snow farms near capacity, boston is looking for more space which will keep the operators working around the clock. there's even greater urgency heading into the weekend and every bit helps. >> you have to be careful. you have to take it slow. it's been pretty slow. >> that was wbz's bess romano reporting. they're still considering whether to shut down public transportation tomorrow night. the president will announce his plans during a summit at stanford university. susan mcginnis is in washington.

good morning, susan. >> good morning, alison. the president has made combatting cyber crime a priority in his second term and today he'll push the industry to cooperate more on stopping attacks. president obama is in silicon valley this morning for a summit where he'll make good on pledges he made at the state of the union. >> no foreign nation, no hacker should be able to shut down our network, steal our trade secrets or invade the privacy of millions of families. >> tim cook and others will talk how the private sector can work together to prevent cyber attacks. as part of it the president will offer an executive order. it will create private sector hubs where data can be exchanged easily. the department of homeland security will oversea the exchange. the framework includes strong

privacy protections. >> the president is going to be speaking with a large number of ceos of major american corporations who, i believe, are going to commit themselves to taking specific concrete actions to improve the cyber security postures of their individual organizations. >> calls to step up cyber security have grown including one involving sony pictures and the most recent anthem health insurance hack that compromised millions of americans. the president has set aside $4 million in his budget to boost cyber security. now, three notable ceos will not be present today. that of facebook google and yahoo!. reportedly they're snubbing the white house, sending security executives instead. it's said to be an illustration of a souring relationship between them and the white house

after government spying. the defense department has approved treatments. manning formerly known as manning is receiving a gender reassignment. she's serving a 35-year sentence for sending documents to wikileaks. she threatened suicide unless she got help to focus on her transition. three muslims were remembered thursday on the campus of north carolina state university. as vicente arenas reports many felt they were targeted because of their religion. >> reporter: the massive clouds that came to mourn made it clear they fear resentment. she was a friend of the murdered couple. >> so more than just a dispute. >> definitely. definitely more than a parking

a pennsylvania family had to choose whether the murderer of a loved one should live or die. in america it's usually left up the a jury. but as anna werner reports, this case was heard under islamic law. >> reporter: jennifer moved to qatar to teach kindergarten in september 12. two months later she was dead. authorities say she was murdered in her apartment by a security guard who worked in her building. these are jennifer's sisters. >> two years later, and it's still really hard to imagine that this did happen. >> reporter: the guard reportedly confessed, but the trial was continually delayed. then a few weeks ago came a development they never expect. a qatari judge hearing the case asked them to decide what

punishment the man should face if convicted. >> i was shocked, and i didn't even consider that they would take the family's wishes into consideration like that. >> reporter: one option they were given was a reduced sentence of the alleged killer in skparj for blood money of $56,000. >> it was very insulting that they would think we would consider that after what he has taken from us. >> reporter: the next question was hard to answer. did they want him to get the dpemt. >> so you potentially have the power to spare this man's life or to put him to death. what is that like? >> difficult. it's a real hard decision. >> forriter of you, was there a feeling at all a moment of wanting revenge? i mean he kill your sister. >> yes. in the beginning i felt like that. but once you calm down and try to think rationally, we don't want to be anything like him.
