has the details coming up for you in just a couple of minutes. now, today it marks one year since icy conditions caused a major pileup on the pennsylvania turnpike. as many as a hundred cars and trucks were involved in this crash. now, this mess spanned for several miles if you'll recall. officials shut down the turnpike between willow grove and bensalem for most of the day. 30 people were injured. today pope francis appointed 20 new cardinals to oversee the catholic church. most of the new cardinals are not from europe or the united states. five of the 20 will be nonvoting cardinals meaning they will not directly help to choose the pope's successor. charge analysts say this is all part of the pontiff's top to bottom reforms of the church with the goals of greater diversity and inclusiveness. now, it is extremely cold, it's snowy outside so of course what better time than to take the polar plunge, a day like today perfect right? weekend and thousands ran right into the atlantic ocean. it makes you shiver just looking at that. >> honestly it was a great cause and it was the worst year i've had in like five years. one year there's snow on the ground and this has literally been the worst year. our feet are frozen but it's for a good cause so we did it again. >> each year 10s of thousands head down to the shore this weekend in february. there's a full slate of events including a run walk for autism awareness also a vendor's market an free concert, all for a great cause. >> the water temperature's actually warmer than what the air is right now so it actually felt probably okay to be in the ocean but tomorrow that certainly is a different story. live look at big boulder though, it's actually somewhat pleasant right now compared to the forecast if you're skiing and riding up in the poconos tonight. it's tomorrow, wow it's going to be tough. strong howling winds, wind chill values down around minus 20, minus 25. not a good day to be on the

slopes. here's the reason. we're tracking a clipper system that's moving through and it's got a lot of arctic air behind it. this storm is just so dynamic. if it was the springtime we would be dealing with thunderstorms. there were a few lightning strikes across the mountains of western pennsylvania so a little bit of thunder snow there indicating how unstable the atmosphere is. we're in a break right now but there is the actual arctic front. you can see a line of heavier snow moving through williamsport down through the harrisburg area approaching lancaster county. ahead of it starting to see snow break out across northeastern maryland, into delaware and parts of south jersey so give eight another few hours, we'll get some brief heavy snow squalls moving into the region. so if you get stuck underneath one of those it's kind of like a summertime thunderstorm. there could be a brief downpour of snow, could leave a quick coating up to an inch in a matter of a few minutes and dropping down the visibility so keep that in mind when driving later on this evening. temperatures now really not that bad compared to what they're going to be. 30 degrees at the airport, 31 in wilmington but you can see we are below freezing in most

spots. once the snow does come down it's going to stick. you get to the other side of the arctic front look at that 9 degrees in cleveland, then pittsburgh, 13 in buffalo. that's not factoring in the wind so that colder air will be rushing eastward tonight. we'll get the front through here later on tonight around midnight or so and then for sunday into monday that core of the cold air settles in high temperatures a good 15 to 25 degrees below average so we're going to struggle to get out of the teens during the day on sunday and monday. so, let's time things out for you. now through about 8, 9 o'clock we can see some of those steadier snow squalls moving into the region. things improve later tonight around midnight or so. still some leftover snow showers especially across far eastern new jersey. tomorrow morning we wake up to clouds and sunshine but it's going to be windy cold blowing snow across parts of the region through the afternoon. skies should become mostly sunny but the wind continues. into president's day, as far as precipitation goes, nonexist tender.
6:18 pm
just going to be cold with a few clouds but that wind does continue so some dangerous wind chills to deal with over the next 24 to 48 hours. how much snow are we talking about tonight? general 1 to 3 inches. depends if you get caught underneath one of those heavier snow bands. different story in the poconos. maybe three, 4-inches there. some spots could get up to about five, less the farther south you go where a little bit of rain is mixing in. winds not strong right now but here we go, 11 o'clock to midnight winds could gust 30 to 40 miles per hour. that will be the trend through the overnight hours. tomorrow morning still very strong wind gusts, over 40 miles per hour possibly, near 50. better conditions by the afternoon, though. the wind relaxes a little bit but it's still going to be strong. so what will it actually feel like when you factor in the wind along with this arctic air? midnight down around zero to below zero and that's the trend through the overnight. 7 o'clock sunday morning it could feel like minus 10, minus 11 for philadelphia to near minus 20 in the poconos. dangerous wind chills continue
6:19 pm
through sunday night even into monday morning. so, the forecast tonight again some snow squalls this evening will come to an end overnight, very windy and cold with a low near 16. wind chill values will feel below zero. tomorrow we struggle to get to 18 for the high temperature. winds could gust to 50 o to 55. monday morning near record low. 2 degrees is the forecast. that is the record low for the day set back in 1888. so, monday mourning that's going to be the coldest day. monday afternoon 21 degrees. tuesday 28 for the high. there could be a little snow at night. wednesday near 30. and then just stays cold again through the end of the week. could be snow next saturday. we're just locked into a cold pattern and wind continues next couple days. >> oh, boy. bundle up, though, for the v day plans tonight you. >> got it. stay safe. >> thank you. lesley's got sports highlights a lot of college basketball. villanova on the road and another tough test against big east rival butler. bulldogs within one name of nova in the big east
