that is now bearing down on the delaware valley. good evening, i'm chris may. i'm jessica dean. winter storm warning just went in effect for parts of the area lets go right to meteorologist kathy orr for latest on the timing, track and a totals kathy. >> the snow is moving up i-95 corridor as we speak already in washington and already in baltimore. next up wilmington. you can see it on storm scan three moving quickly toward the north and east. very large storm and encompasses about 19 to 20 states. it is being impacted with watches and warnings. you can see that dark lavender ban that is the heavier snow that is lifting up toward the north. already in georgetown delaware heading toward dover, soon in cape may and then seeing tonight wilmington within the next couple of hours. a all this progress to the north east. i mentioned those warnings, advisories, they cover a good chunk of the eastern see game and we will see that winter storm watch or winter storm warning continue. you see it in pink right through tomorrow at noon.

the advicery for philadelphia and points to the north and west, until noon. this is for a lesser accumulation. a bit of the upside down storm where we see less's accumulation to the the north and higher numbers to the the south. future weather shows the snow moving up at a good grip of where it is right now moving toward the north and east. by nine or 10:00 in wilmington. by midnight it is in philadelphia. it moves through the entire region with the heavier snow moving through overnight. 7:00 o'clock hour we are seeing moderate snow in philadelphia heavier snow toward atlantic city and wildwood with where we will see higher accumulations. it clears out late morning. the 9:00 ape midnight it moves n heaviest overnight especially during that morning rush and then tapers off during the noon hour. snow accumulations one to three to the north and west of the city i-95 corridor three to four. those higher accumulations toward millville, atlantic city between six and six to nine as you head toward the south and toward the east especially through cape may county. we will continue to update this and zoom into give you

"eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live at the penndot salt yard in norristown diana? >> reporter: jessica, i'm standing in one of the many barns here in norristown where a few hours from now trucks will be loading up and heading out on to the road. they are expect to be between eight and 9:00 and start heading out for morning commute is what they are concerned about but they are expecting snow to fall between 9:00 and 10:00 o'clock tonight. because of the low temperatures they say it will be a little different this time. they are dropping salt but it is also a mix of aggregate the to keep those road from being too slick for that morning commute. penndot says they are ready so far this year they have only used about 88,000 tons of

"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is on the scene live with details tonight. david report rorrer frightening scene here in new castle delaware. this is the rose hill community center this happened after 3:00 in the afternoon. we want to show you chopper three video where someone with a gun a suspect walked in, opened fire, shot and killed a male inside. we're not the exactly sure how hurt that male is. police are saying the victim is's male and he is dead and thinks inside happening in the basement. jessica and chris, there are several different parts of the

community center. there is a day care dance studio, something for senior citizens. we are told this happened in the basement. >> police are not saying any suspect's name. and, and police are again, sad news to report that a male has died here at rose hill community center school was on lock down, day care was on lock down, just for a little bit. neighbors are back inside, building is closed down but police continue their investigation. we will follow-up date and bring you latest. we are live david spunt, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you for that update. fire fighters battled the dangerous cold today to put out a a two alarm fire in west philadelphia and at scene left behind was amazing. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live from west philadelphia with more, todd. >> reporter: chris, for past three hours or so fire fighters have been rotate nothing and out. take a look behind me you can

see fire fighters still least main on the scene at this hour. right the now they will continue to pour water on the hot spots this building as you can see is encased entirely in ice. if you take a look to the left you can see those two ladders there right new. they are essentially frozen and stuck to the side of the build ing. for fire, the transformation of the building engulfed in the raging fire into an ice capsule of sorts had people coming out to take pictures. >> you don't see this every day. >> not at all. >> we had to bring the the kid over to come take a look at it. thinks something you see out of the movies and stuff. >> reporter: early morning fire at fifth second and locust street means fire fighters had to freezing temperatures with ice around the building. on the ground ice was seemingly every where. on the hoses, around the fire trucks and the buildings next door. >> is there six people's vac waited from neighboring apartment on the south side of

the building and they are staying with family. >> reporter: ice, is being blamed for shutting down a popular south philadelphia sandwich shop, frozen jobs from roast pork and long island away on monday. >> i'm bumped. it is cold out. we will to have come back and have the real deal but we will try path the path's or geno's and satisfaction what it is like. >> reporter: while our stretch of freezing weather is causing ice to form along the delaware it is wearing thin on people battling the cold this cold is kicking my butt day in and day out. but it is manageable though. >> reporter: not everyone is ready to throw in the towel. despite bitter cold we found people enjoying the day on the ice at blue cross river rink. >> it is presidents day, why not. >> reporter: back here live to our fire in west philadelphia. the cause of this fire is still remaining under investigation, but the good news is null in all of this despite massive flames and fire fighters out here battling the freezing temperatures and the ice in one was injured.

reporting live, tonight from west philadelphia todd quinones for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> macing todd, thanks very much. receipts dents of the philadelphia apartment building say they are lucky to be alive after a gas main ruptured and blew out their windows this morning. now investigators are looking into whether the the frigid temperatures played a factor in this. team coverage continues with "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter. >> reporter: as the apartment collapsed around them furniture flipped upside down, the floor lifted off its foundation by the natural gas explosion, richard jordan and his wife sleeping in this bed their dog at their side and unhurt. >> nothing kicked out from under the the bed. that is a miracle um. >> reporter: returning to salvage what they could jordans remembered watching as the ceiling began falling stopping just inches from the foot of their bed. >> the lord was looking out for us, and kept that ceiling up there, if it had come down on us, i don't think we would

have ever made it out. >> whoever won that 500 million lottery didn't do as well as me. >> reporter: are upstairs neighbor paul mcginty also got out uninjured joining neighbors helping the jordans out of their shattered apartments. >> kind of helped them out over the window and carried them into our house here. >> reporter: pgw officials say this break in the 6-inch cast iron main under the the street led to the gas leaking in the. >> very blessed, but, still heart broken. >> jordan's a blast destroyed homemade wood inn ships and other possessions but they add that the throughout of what could have happened goes a long way to putting those losses in to perspective. >> we're just very thankful that we survived. we can always remace stuff. >> reporter: joining pgw in the search for what caused this main to break is the public utility commission,

among some of the factors being considered the cold weather, and perhaps the age of the main itself. in chestnut hill i'm walt hunter cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well elsewhere tonight this man, five-year old thomas mayorer is facing two charges of homicide. police say he was behind the wheel of the pick up that collided with a minivan saturday night on route one hundred in chester county. a brother and sister miles and charlotte hand again were killed in that crash. their parent were seriously hurt. there were two other adult in the van. they were treated and release. caught on camera a fire breather catches fire in philadelphia we told that man suffer minor burns. take a look at this video from jeff herd attending tattoo arts convention at the convention center yesterday. flames engulfed the performer's body and then they spread to the floor. several people rushed into quickly extinguish the flames.

baseball fans are certainly going to be happy that the temperatures have dip so low this morning. we will explain why coming up next. it is presidents day. lots of kid have the day off from school but what can they do with freezing temperatures? i'm cleve bryan and i'll show you one place in camden where kid are beating the cold and having fun all day long. stocking up for snow area grocery stores are, brisk business just hours before the the arrival of the winter storm, kathy. don't worry, you'll be able to get out. we are watching snow from the south, morning commute will be the toughest part of this storm and if you are going out overnight, we will track updated totals and show you when it will be moving out coming up. pitch ers and catchers report on thursday with the great deal of uncertainty in the air. will cole hamels betrayeded? what will it take for the phillies to part with their best asset. ruben amaro answer as head in sports.

well, the the snowstorm is on our doorsteps tonight. storm scan three is tracking a system that could drop some significant snow in some parts of the area, kathy will tell you exactly where, she will have the latest totals, the timing, and the track of that storm, just minutes from right new. well, a trip to the supermarket was a must for these folks in camden county. "eyewitness news" at the shop rite in brooklawn where shoppers filled their carts with everything that they will need to ride out the chills and the snow. of course, some people had no choice but to work outside in this dangerous cold. >> while there are others lucky enough to have today off and they found themselves looking for something to do. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has more on how people are dealing with the cold. >> it is annoying. >> reporter: camden streets are a tough place to be during bitter cold.

>> how all right. >> reporter: code blue is in effect and camden county police are not just letting homeless to find shelter but they are trying to maintain normal community engagement by doing walking patrols. >> we are patrolling up and down broadway and then we will go in the city toward sycamore and chestnut street, pretty base being day. not too busy right now. i don't know if that is impact of the weather. >> reporter: while some people have to be outside others like perez family are tired of being couped up indoors. >> it is hard because they want to be outside and they want to play and we can't. >> reporter: how do you combat cold weather important dumb work a giant indoor water park. this center hosted a presidents day camp. >> it gives them something to get out of the house. most of them have been couped up, we are trying to provide a service to the community to bring family and engage them here. >> reporter: for $5 a piece. seventy who will kid got lunch and full day of activity including plenty of pool time. >> it is could on it side but it is warm and pool is warm.

>> reporter: camden officials say this is one of the most successful day camps they have had. membership is opened and you can beat the cold any day you want n camden i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". fans of the wilmington blue rocks got a cool deal this morning. minor league baseball team offered opening day tickets for just 4 cents. the price is determined by the the temperature at 8:00 a.m. people willing to ebb door the the freezing cold were actually rewarded. the blue rocks will open up at home, on april 16th. april 16th, it cannot come soon enough. our eyewitness weather watchers are talking snow across the delaware valley. you can see temperatures definitely cold enough, in the teens, and with colder temperatures, we will generally can make more snow. so michael ising a in millville the temperature is 14 right now, wind out of the west at 8 miles an hour. he is very close to the snow. waiting for the snow and michael within the next hour

or so you will than seeing some light snow flakes. snow coming up from the southwest moving toward the north east. right now on the pennsylvania side, we are looking at a temperature of only 13 in broomall and no wind. we have incredible pictures to show you. take a look outside where we are looking at cold conditions. jack frost big boulder, still below zero with the wind chill, they are not going to be seeing much snow but the place that will, will be the shore. places like sea isle city ocean city. you can see dusting from the boardwalk on the weekend. you will be in the six to 9-inch range come tonight and tomorrow. i want to show you this great picture from our eyewitness cam. brian from wildwood sent thus picture. you can see back bays of wildwood is absolutely frozen. this is a whale watch both bet but not moving anytime soon with that ice. it is incredible. another great picture from brian. you can see pylons, a house boat there and nothing but ice. when those water waves, little

bit of the the ebb and flow comes in right at the shoreline you can see it freezing and swirling right in place. just a amazing. thanks brian for that photo. we will get colder overnight. temperatures in the teens. poconos single numbers. below zero with the wind chill right now. in the poconos it feels like only three below. in philadelphia it feels like six. wind will be calming down but the snow will be moving in. the right now still snow reported in georgetown delaware. right about to move into dover. within the next hour we will see that into wilmington and south jersey. it is an area have low pressure over charlotte moving north and east off the coast. heavier snow will be close toes that low and then during the day tomorrow just a slight chance of the snow shower moving on through but cold air, for thursday, we will stay in the deep freeze. we expect one to 2 inches of snow in the poconos. philadelphia south and east, three to six.

from atlantic city south of millville and dover, two to south and east six to 9 inches of snow. when we break it down the i-95 corridor we are talking about an area right through here through avondale chester, city of philadelphia, bensalem trenton north of wilmington three, to four there. higher amounts through pemberton, hammington glassboro, heading down toward middletown delaware before we get in the heavier accumulations through places like cape may county where we expect six to 9 inches. overnight we will see snow accumulating and that is when it will be falling. low temperature 16. tomorrow morning for the commute light to moderate snow. watch out for icy spots, slow travel and also delays at the airport and area road. the as we look a head during the day tomorrow high of 28 with clearing skies. seven day forecast calls for quieter conditions but much colder thursday 20. friday morning two. the close to the record of one.

getting better temperatures wise over course of next week even. the it has been a crazy stretch of weather. >> we will be happy to see 30's back. >> yeah, and after too whenever it arrives. >> in the too soon. >> good point chris, yes. good evening, traveling out and about during this rush hour we will fine lingering delays but it is later because it is a holiday and a lot of folks are staying home cuddling up and watching us live if you plan to travel on the vine street expressway you will notice volume westbound. as you approach the area of the schuylkill. heading in the eastbound direction slight volume approaching 95. we had an earlier 95 a disabled vehicle at girard avenue. it stalled things on the vine trying to get there we have clear that out of the the way but we have residual traffic on the vine street expressway approaching 95 and north bound side of 95 itself. we are seeing delays between vine street expressway making your way toward girard and even some light volume around cottman avenue usual stuff
