>> snowy start to the morning, a lot of roads, many roads covered in snow, and storm scan3, showing that system still dumping more snow on the area right now going to keep ongoing for few more hours. katie says that snow will stick around, until later on this morning and already making the roads just a met can't keep up with it. >> you got that right. hundreds of schools already delayed or closed that includes a two-hour delay for philadelphia public and archdioces schools as well. we have team coverage for you team of reporters tracking the conditions in your neighborhood, first we check in with katie in the weather center, good morning. >> yes, good morning guys. this will be one of those mornings, one of those things you just can't quite key up with t it continues to snow
5:31 am
relatively moderately, in a lot of locations so, even if the plows have already gone through, may have to go through again or even few extra times because of the snow a accumulates very quickly, and b just that light fluffy variety so it will again it, will coat the roads really fast. now, visibility, little less than ideal as you can tell by looking at the "skycam 3" coverage here, over the ben franklin bridge. not terrible, but not ideal either. so thankfully, this isn't wind driven snow necessarily but because it is coming down, as quickly and moderately as it is, it will potentially reduce your visibility. so do you have watch out for. that will meanwhile here is storm scan3 we showed you second ago yes discontinuing back edge to this. we are far from done with the final rounds of snow just yet. in fact, still pretty heavy snow falling at this hour through southern most new castle county right across the kent border in fact, then across the bay into the borders of salem and cumberland counties. that's where we've got pretty good snow coming down, pretty good clip right now. understandably, then, when you look at the way the radar is
5:32 am
shaping up right now why we expect to see the heaviest snowfall across delaware, southern most new jersey so the rest of this morning, just couple of highways for you i80, generally looking at light snow, if you are traveling up toward that particular highway, if any the further inland you go, into central pennsylvania, the lessor the less snow you will see if you see any at all. but the steady snow will continue to fall along i95 as it continues to do right now. and along the pa turnpike going say the northeast extension, mainly it is just snow showers because this is all sort every winding down from west to east. soap, that is sort of how you can peg it when you think about the area map. and how each of these highways is laid out on them. so places like the garden state parkway also stuck in pretty heavy snow for the next few hours, we have winter storm warnings in the hot pink. so southern part of our area, winter weather advisory to the north, including philadelphia county, not philadelphia county, in a winter storm warning, so since extends that little further to the north.
5:33 am
bottom line is you're going to find that snow out there really the next couple of hours, it will slow you down. temperatures right now oh, ya, it is absolutely cold enough, that there is no mixing even possibility this morning, we are into the teens most locations general three maybe up to 6 inches, the expectation now for philadelphia, but the highest totals will still go to the southern most counties. we want to get a check on how it is looking outside right now on the area roadways, less than ideal. but let's get all of the details from justin dray become live in the cbs-3 mobile weather lab hi, justin. >> good morning, katie. yes, talk about so cold, just dealing with snow everywhere. kind of makes it easier to forecast. here we, are route one south new castle county delaware, actually getting off exit 136. if you know the area, which is middletown, and odessa, delaware. so we go and check out some of the neighborhoods around here. route one again looks like phonecall from my photographer. and, you know, just snow
5:34 am
covered, onramps worth shape. main roads route one good coating to half inch, the flaws have gone through. temperatures so cold, 13 degrees a the love air piling up between these snowflakes so just piles up so fast, it is hard to keep up with the snowfall here, and i wanted to get into the heavier band of snow. looks like we're on the western edge of the heavy snow moving through southern new castle county, delaware, so give it another hour or so. things should get better here. you can see damage is done. good solid probably 3 inches in all in the grass. but here on the roads still snow covered no matter where go. soap, you just want to stay safe, use the common sense out here this morning. again coming up later in the next hit get a check on neighborhood roads see how bad it is, because majors in bad shape so you know the side streets will be a lot worse. that's the latest here in middletown delaware. >> thank up, justin, the back roads, in the local areas definitely are little worse. actually came in from the
5:35 am
haddonfield area this morning pretty much a nightmare. we're going outside show you definitely what the blue route looks like, little nightmare there, as well. there are accident popping up everywhere, all over the majors pretty much snow covered. reduced speeds all across the board, blue route down to 45 miles per hour at the time being, see accident scene, police activity push over to the right hand shoulder, part of the right hand lane. not whole lot of volume trying to get by. that's pretty much good thing. but you can see pretty much single file, as the snow is covering the outer edges of the highways there. over on the ben franklin bridge, there are speed restrictions as well, all of the area bridges down to 25 miles per hour, all lanes open, and that's definitely good thing as well also came over the ben bridge this morning and it was very, very difficult. going on the downhill slope of the bridge, very slippery as you make your way down in the right hand curve headed toward the vine street expressway, as women, for dealing with the rest of the bridges all down to 25 miles per hour for the betsy, while we just saw the ben, commodore barry, east and west in or out of philadelphia you'll see a loft problems
5:36 am
there. now for mass trains, septa buses all of the buses actually on detour. that's a lot. definitely check to see if that affect you so far for your commute this morning the bus 35 suspended on time for new jersey transit and normal schedule, running on snow schedule for the patco speed line, back to you. >> jess, thank you. in new jersey state offers also opening late this morning, because of the snow. non-essential employees should report at 11:00 a.m. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins us from clementon, camden count way look at the conditions, jan good morning. >> reporter: ukee, good morning, still steadily snowing in camden county new jersey, the accumulation getting higher and higher each and every time we come to you live. look at untouched area over here. it is at least 3 inches, at this time point. maybe 4 inches of light fluffy, powdery snow. the kids get out here and play in this, definitely, good time, what isn't a good time for the adult, the parents that have to go to work. this is what a road will look like coming out of south jersey this morning. these roads are completely snow covered.
5:37 am
this is the 400 block of south white horse pike here in clementon. a couple of plow trucks have come through this area, but you can see with the snow still coming down, it just piles right on back up. we were able to take a look at some of the plow trucks earlier this morning. it was not a treat highways look similar to the side streets this morning even though new jersey dot was out on the roads because as soon as they come through an area this snow just accumulates once again. so folks will definitely have to bankrupt out the shovels this morning the brushes, as well, to shovel their way out of the driveway, brush off the sidewalk, brush off the cars, we were able to catch up with one commute here takes trains and buses to get all the way to cherry hill to work. but she says, this is actually favorable to what we had earlier this week. take a listen. >> i would rather have the snow than yesterday. this is much better than yesterday. >> where are you going? >> to the bus stop to the train and then from the train to the bus stop in camden from
5:38 am
camden to cherry hill mall. >> that's a long commute. >> two buses and a train. >> so she has a long commute. hey at least not standing in 3 degrees temperatures, right? we're right around 14 degrees this morning let me tell you it is a big difference, 10 degrees makes and there is no wind out here either. so we're feeling a lot better this morning as well, live look again out here on scene in clementon the cars, the traffic volume is picking up. but everybody's moving very, very slowly. and that's the good news, because everybody needs some extra time to get through these slippery travel conditions. reporting live in clementon jan carabeo cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> jan thanks so. we'll check back in just a few, as of you know when it snows philadelphia's manayunk neighborhood is suitable for sledding and driving. justin finch my man checking out the roads. justin, good morning. >> reporter: ukee, good morning, a major change since we last saw you here. main street is almost completely plowed all the way back there, good news for drivers, making their way out
5:39 am
here, this morning on their way to work and school. i want to show you levering street. as you can see, a plow has been through here, but not quite as thoroughly. this is the story though, on your side streets in manayunk, your major hills like gay street up there and also levering, going further up have been plowed, the smaller side streets on those hills have, not been plowed. clearly quite yet. walking down the sidewalks do take some caution, it is slippery underneath there. you can get an idea of what's underneath. we have the row homes see the snow moves fairly easily on to the side of the curb there not much ice underneath it but this is very fine powdery snow the kind that when you lose your ball, your bearings, you can slip and fall quite easily here, and there is about three 4 inches of snow, of that stuff here on the ground here. and it is fluffy, and nice to look at, but perhaps a danger could be lurking underneath if you're not careful with how you're getting around. we came here from spring garden on the 76 west here
5:40 am
toward manayunk. it was a slippery, sliding ride on the way out here. we saw a truck slip out there. you have to be very, very careful, making your way around to see it this morning. as you can see traffic now picking up here, manayunk, the day is about to begin. we'll see what's in store forgetting around this area. we are live here in manayunk, justin finch cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you justin, appreciate t what's it look like outside your door? grab your phone and sends us some snow pictures using the facebook twitter or instagram with the hashtag cbs36789 you can also up load them at cbs philly weather app. erika? >> ukee, this is incredible video here, a fireball erupts in the sky. this is after a train caring more than a hundred tankers of crude oil it derails in west virginia, this all happened yesterday afternoon in the town of boomer. at least 14 cars ignited triggering multiple explosions and that forced families nearby from their homes. authorities say they plan to let the tankers burn out on their own before an
5:41 am
investigation can begin. the train company csx only one person treated foreign halation issues. >> before you head out the door, we are keeping our eye on the storm system. the roads are not pretty right now, so stay home a little longer if you k we'll check all of the conditions across the region, as the snow continues to fall. be right back.
5:42 am
jim: standardized testing has gone from a nuisance to a concern to a crisis. michael: we have this finite amount of time, and yet we're spending so much of it on this unproven standardized test when we really should be using that time in a better way focusing individually on our students. dave: education is supposed to be about our students, and it's becoming about a test. ros: what is our end goal in education? to be masters of a test?
5:43 am
>> we have snow around the region this morning, please give yourself extra time this morning when you have to roll out. also, hundreds of school delays and closings at the bottom of your screen. katie will be along with your update in just a bit. first, "kyw news radio" 1060 mike denardo still driving around town watch do you see now? good morning. >> good morning, say for the sunday ice storm we had couple of weeks ago i think these are the second worse driving conditions we've seen all winter. there is a good 3 inches of snow on the ground here in magnolia, south jersey, eastbound white horse pike, road completely snow covered and slippery of the driving conditions are difficult. because the snow still coming down, crews have been out they've been plowing but they haven't been able to keep up with the fact that the snow is still falling and plus, you have more people out on the roads so, the drivers on the road are competing with the snow plows that are
5:44 am
trying to clear the roadways. so it makes for some dangerous conditions. we've seen some spin-outs. we've seen couple of funder benders, people driving very slowly with their flashes on, because conditions are that difficult. ukee? >> so as the volume picks up, you say you're seeing little more activity out there as far as folks are picking up in their speed as well, few folks? >> sure. it will only get worse as the morning drive goes on, and people will get out and look out the window and they think they can go where they need to go. but i'm doing 35 right now i probably shouldn't be going that quickly. >> a lot of speed restrictions out there on the roads and on the bridges mike, we'll check back with you appreciate it. >> your welcome. >> mike denardo, "kyw news radio 1060". >> let's get our forecast now here's kate. >> i guys, we've been getting great reports coming in all morning long from very early risers so grateful for. that will we take you on out first and for most to kim of pictures, little puppy in the snow, syd in any he has hit or she, ready to catch snowballs.
5:45 am
which i think is adorable in egg harbor township coming in from bash a we have our yardsticks out folks 3 inches of snow measured 5:15 this morning, came in from jeff. we will give you one more here middletown, right now we are right at the 3-inch march this one came in from jason and he is again in delaware. meanwhile, i want to take you on out to the snowfall list, that's been coming in. a lot of report of's least 4 inches, 5.9, just under six just under half foot. just nearly there. kevin send that one in from cinnaminson. willow grove bash, a four and a half. we have 4 inches, as well, bensalem from steve, king of prussia from jerry 4 inches as well from joe in philly, and in riverside from ron, just under 4 inches. so you can see the list goes on, where we are definitely accumulating this snow, very quickly, and it is going to slow you down as we just heard from mike denardo hearing it from all of the field crews all morning long, it is not a cake walk out there guys. storm scan3 showing the back edge is discontinuing here, good to see. but we will be stuck with this
5:46 am
through the rest of the typical morning rush. time ago lot less than ideal out of this one. again, we're nearing the half foot mark in a couple of locations so we will end up i think verifying pretty darn well with the totals that we expected out of this one by the time it is all said and donement likely for many locations in the darker shade of blue, you may end up being on nine lower end of six to nine still possibility locally since ramped up for philadelphia county four to 6 inches the expectation the further north you go the less likely it is you will end up with much more than four to 6 inches, you didn't get enough snow long enough certainly isn't falling as heff will he further to the south. that's where the sweet spot ends up being. another arctic front coming along by tomorrow, will usher in couple of flurries or yes snow showers later in the day. i do not expect much if any accumulation out of this that's good news, we have enough to clean up from this one today but we are stuck in the arctic freeze again, take a look at this, forecasting a giant goose egg for early friday morning. that will would flirt with
5:47 am
another record low. see how we do. the point is cold is coming back just after we have some snow. jess, back to you. >> good morning, out on the blue route dealing with problems and a lot of have i are you conditions, this is actually the southbound lanes right around ridge, where you can see, an accident, actually involving a tractor-trailer police activity on the scene there, trying to get that clean up, out of the way. actually on the opposite side, just beyond this camera, on the northbound lanes, there are several disable vehicle and vehicles facing the opposite direction because at the keep spinning out. so going slower, allowing yourselves extra time definitely good idea, see cars even single file in the southbound lanes over on the schuylkill, not dealing with a loft volume, definitely good thing, because you can see the schuylkill definitely snow covered. only dealing with some lighter know center lanes where roads have been slightly plowed. see still moving along slowly definitely slippery conditions there, as well. out in new jersey 295 southbound warwick, an accident actually pushed over into the left hand shoulder.
5:48 am
and for the rest of the pa majors definitely good advice here. 45 miles per hour pretty much across the board schuylkill, 95 the blue route the vine st. expressway, 202 422 pretty much everywhere, if you don't see the speed restrictions you definitely want to do that anyway. this is good day for t don't forget t on the road get updated information about traffic backups with the new your drive app. you can download the app for iphone and android devices by going to cbsphilly.com/your drive. >> all right, thanks so much. before you head out the door we will get one more check of the conditions out there for your morning commute. >> first though, here is one of the stories we are area working on tonight for 11:00. >> i'm health reporter stephanie stahl. are you a germophobe? >> very scary. i'm so concerned about getting sick, i can't afford to get sick. >> are you worried about germs? >> not really. >> not at all. i ride the subway every day. >> what about the 52nd rule? it is okay to eat something that dropped on the floor if it is only been there for a few seconds?
5:49 am
>> unless it has dirt all over it. >> in the bathroom, do you always put down the toilet lid when you flush? >> yes, we that, i do that, just me in my house the kids know to do that. >> in public rest rooms, think dryers are better than paper towels? the great germ debate. what's silly and what's sensible to help keep you cold and flu-free. tonight on "eyewitness news" at 11:00. how do i know i'm getting the best price on this? we'll match any competitor's price. what about this? price match guarantee. and this? yup. so no monkey business? no tom foolery? oh, we do have tom foolery... ...tom? staples has a price match guarantee. make on budget happen. make best prices happen. staples. make more happen.
5:51 am
this is the "name your price" tool. it gives you options based on your budget -- it's a piece of cake. i was told there would be cake. get a free quote at progressive.com. >> we are still finding at least back edge to this storm system, uke app but not it is not through just yet. so the timing certainly a lot less than ideal. and the time something going
5:52 am
to continue to bring us some additional snow through the better part of the morning rush. as we start things off, with a look out over aikins oval here and the ben franklin parkway, couple of folks rolling on through here, thankfully not too much traffic out there. but the problem is as the snow continues to fall, it is going have to stop really before penndot can get out there and completely clear it away. so while they're doing their best to keep up with it, it may not necessarily be ideal for you. we really want you to slow down out there. please, just be smart about this. take it easy. we know you got places to be, but you might just have to be late today. again, thankfully, back edge, evident on radar here on storm scan3, but this is going to slow you down, with light to moderate snow continuing for the next few hours reduced visibility there is will be tapering from west to east with time. so really the closer you are to the area shore points, for one thing more likely it is you'll end one pretty significant snow by comparison to your neighbors further inland. but also see it wrap up, the latest so, by this afternoon we're all in the clear
5:53 am
actually even probably see little clearing take place where we get bit of sunshine, but at that point the clean up effort will certainly be underway. and we are shooting for 28 degrees. tomorrow up to 30, fresh arctic cold comes on in for us to wrap up the work week. jess, over to you. >> thank you katie. coming up on 6:00 a.m., a lot of problems pretty much all across the board. this one right here, you can see, on the blue route right around ridge, dealing with an accident involving a tractor-trailer, and police activity on the scene taking outright hands shoulder, not whole lot of volume really trying squeeze on by the incident, but that's actually good thing. but they are slow going at the same time. see the snow covered highways, can't see past the camera northbound lanes several cars actually that have careened out little out of control. facing the opposite direction on height ways, so we know that that definitely means the roadways are particularly slippery. out on 95 right around cottman, slow going here, in the southbound lanes and all lanes completely snow covered you can see there, as well, headed towards the center city area see most of the slow going, we do have accident out
5:54 am
in new jersey, as well. several accident keep popping up cleaning up pretty quickly though, 295 southbound approaching warwick road actually over into the left-hand lane. these are the detours for the septa buses bus 35 suspended no problems for new jersey transit, or patco speed line. stay there cbs-3 "eyewitness news" will be right back.
5:55 am

5:56 am
>> good morning, family, the snow didn't stop these folks from running the steps of the art museum this morning. that's great. getting their exercise in. >> wow. >> run carefully. it is slick up there. >> indeed. watch your step. very gingerly, that's for sure. >> well, oh, no, snow, i can work out. >> that's a good group right there. >> well done. >> the roads out there pretty slick this morning, we have our eye on the storm system. >> many doing up in the next hour of cbs-3 "eyewitness news", we have crews all over the area to bring you live
5:57 am
5:59 am
>> we have our eye on the storm this morning. the snow's been falling for a few hours now. live picture for from south jersey, which is expected to be one of the hardest hit areas. you can just see all of those snow covered roads, just in time unfortunately for the morning commute really the timing could not be worse for. >> this now philadelphia won't get as much snow as new jersey or delaware, but don't be fooled. the snow is still covering slick roads and sidewalks already, icy from the cold weather we've had the last few days so be careful when walking out there. >> and today all philadelphia public and archdioces schools they are opening but, two hours late.
6:00 am
so maybe curl back underneath those blanket hit snooze. there are dozen of other closings and delays for you at the bottom of your screen and at cbsphilly.com. we will be dealing with the snow for a little while still. storm scan3 here, showing the system blanketing our area. >> good morning everyone, i'm lucky, i got the vong straw this morning i'm coasting in the studio, ukee, you got the short part on the skydeck. >> how did that happen? who do i have to talk to? >> not me. >> i saw those young people running up the stems of the art museum not too long ago before we ended our last show. and that looked kinds of fun. juan dollars to come checks things out family, you have to slow your roll. the snow continuing to come down here on the skydeck on railing i see about two 3 inches, out here, already and here on the platform t looks about the same. maybe even a little bit more. so, i know when i drove in today, on the drive that usually takes about 25 minute or so, it took me close to an hour to get in. so, it is definitely coming down around the region. but i understanded,
