2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the weather and another day of dangerous cold across much of the country. much of the east will feel like the arctic. record temperatures are expected to topple as windchills fall to single digits and below. don champion is here in new york. one of the places that's expected to set a mark for a new low temperature. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it is so cold that several states have canceled or delayed classes yet again today. the cold air is sending a shiver to people as far south as florida. not only can you feel the deep freeze gripping parts of the nation you can also see it. this giant six-story ice cal forms on a building. now the eric tick air is taking aim at longstanding records in the city and beyond where many experience the coldest morning of the season. in the chicago area these nuns sought salvation themselves as

temperatures dipped to 7 below yesterday. the nuns had boiler problems in but still pressed on. in philadelphia the city's 311 number has been flooded with residents complaining without heat. >> what they do is tell you to get to place where you have a neighbor family. >> reporter: here in new york the city could break a 21 21-year-old record. while the cold has many seeking, some are heading to niagara falls. the falls have not frozen over but with frigid temperatures expected to linger in the northeast through the weekend, anything may be possible. now, the temperatures are slowly expected to creep back up over the course of the next few days and while central and eastern parts of the country have been

freezing interestingly enough in anchorage, alaska this week temperatures approached the 50-degree mark. that sounds amazing right now, anne-marie. >> oh, the irony. don champion in new york. thank you, don. eric fisher o our boston station, wbz, says all the cold will be followed by another storm. >> we had a whole slew of record lows yesterday morning and more very r in jeopardy. boston has only set one record low in eight years. washington, d.c., has. had a record low in 21 year. that will fall. kentucky will beat your record low by at least 10 degrees. absolutely shattered. on saturday new york new jersey richmond baltimore, all unlikely to escape it. look at these temperatures. lower 20s across the panhandle. might touch the upper 30s in miami to kick off your friday.

another storm on top. same spot as the other storms last weekend all across the mid south. this is likely for a mixture of snow and sleet and freezing rain. you see that developing heading into the evening hours. impact in the nashville area. heading up into the northeast. there might be a little bit of a rainfall that tapers off. biggest icing threat across northern arkansas. much of tennessee under the gun for some wintry precipitation and we look for ice also work up west of the 95 corridor. travel safe, everyone. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. u.s. troops are racketing up. a cbs news poll finds nearly two out of three americans, 65% say isis is a major threat to the united states. 67% say the war against the islamic terror group is going badly and that's up ten points in just four months. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie.

the u.s. military says the operation to retake mosul is likely to take place in april or may. the iraqi forces make it clear they plan to regain control of their second largest city. the operation to retake mosul will involve a force of 20,000 to 25,000 iraqi troops supported by u.s. air power. isis gained control in june. it's held by one1,000 or 2,000 iraqi fighters. they'll be trained by military advisers at base in iraq. a poll says for the first time they favor ground troops. that's up 18% since september. president obama was careful to separate islam from terrorism. >> the notion that the west is at war with islam is a lie.

and all of us regardless of our faith, have a responsibility to reject it. >> critics fault the president for not labeling the violent extremism as islamic. former new york mayor rudy giuliani said i do not believe the president loves america. what's wrong with this man that he can't stand up and say there's a part of islam that's sick. those comments triggered much criticism yesterday morning. rudy giuliani said he wasn't questioning the president's patriotism. >> he's a patriot, i'm sure. what i'm saying in his rhetoric i rarely hear him say the thing i i used to hear ronald reagan say about he loves america. >> the white house said giuliani test drove this line of attack when he ran for president. now, speaking at that republican event, giuliani also said of the president, quote, he wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and the way i was

brought up through a love of this country. speaking of "the new york times," he said his criticism should not be viewed as racist because he said the president was brought up by a white mother. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, california health officials say the super bug outbreak at a los angeles hospital is not a threat to the general public. they're warning doctors though that the medical instrument linked to the outbreak may be possib. they're not pulling the endoscope from the market because they believe the benefits outweigh the risks. teri okita reports. >> reporter: health officials are closely watching the antibiotic for the super bug. >> the symptoms for the patients were immediate and patients developed fever, chills and severe infection, sepsis right after undergoing the procedure.

>> reporter: five others have been infected. two others may have been exposed to the deadly bacteria called cre and they're being watched. >> if it gets into the bloodstream, half of those patients will die. >> reporter: ucla says two endoscopes are linked to the outbreak which was discovered last month. doctors here at ucla medical center said the bacteria spread during endoscopic procedures between last october and this january. the hospital said they sterilized the scopes according to manufacturer's standards but it's the implement's design. >> the cdc says it has connected previous super bug outbreaks to the same type of equipment. olympus said it is cooperating.

homes and brought down trees and power lines. no injuries have been reported though. and a suspect is in custody this morning in the road rage killing of a las vegas mother. the accused gunman is no stranger to the victim. vanessa murphy of our las vegas affiliate klas said her husband was emotional when police made the arrest. >> reporter: bob meyers reacting to the scene unfolding near his home as the police arrested the man accused of killing his wife tammy. 19-year-old eric was taken into custody after the standoff. police say he gunned down the mother on february 12th after a road rage incident. >> there's the animal. a block away! are you happy? >> reporter: the day after the murder, the meyers pleaded for the help referring to him as a stranger. a sketch and video was released,

a fund for the samly was set up, plus, the story changed p. on tuesday police discovered the mom and her armed son went looking for the suspect. then on thursday another twist. the meyers family knew the suspected killer. >> we know this boy. i couldn't tell you this before. he knew where i lived. >> reporter: later at a police conference. >> captain, if the police knew why wasn't there an accurate description? it seemed to be more of a general man hunt. >> that's accurate. that didn't all come together today. >> reporter: so police did not know that till today that the meyers family knew him? >> we did not know that. >> reporter: police believe there may have been another person in the car when he pulled the trigger. several hours later police say

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new diet guidelines from the government offer familiar advice along with some surprises. the basic message in the draft recommendations, americans should eat more fruits and vegetables and more whole grains and less saturated fat and sugar. they say coffee is beneficial up to five cups a day and so is moderate alcohol consumption. and there's less concern about cholesterol, so eating eggs is okay then. the government will take comments before releasing the final guidelines later this year. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple may be hitting the road

with its latest project, and walmart employees get a raise. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. apple has about 200 people working on the project and is looking to hire more. apple hopes to compete with tesla and gm. they're targeting 2017 for the release of an electric car that can go more than 200 miles on a single charge and cost under $40,000. stocks on wall street were mixed, held back by a slide in utilities. the dow lost 44 points yesterday. the s&p fell 2 points. but the nasdaq gained 18 points to finish the day. colorado's booming marijuana industry is facing some new legal address this morning. some colorado residents filed federal lawsuits to shut the industry down saying it drives the property value down and hurts visitors. nearly 40% of walmart's

workers in this country are getting a raise. the world's largest retailer is spend 1g billion to change how it pays and trains workers. half a million walmart workers will get pay hikes. walmart is raising its starting wage to at least $9 an hour. the average wage for full-time workers is $13 an hour more than an dollar below the industry standard. anne-marie? >> thank you. well after more than 250 episodes, the sitcom "two and a half men" came to an end and spoiler alert it involved charlie sheen. sort of. >> winning.

a crowd of lawmakers push and shoved. five people were hit in the head with gavel. the country's ruling party is trying to push through a controversial bill to boost police powers. and not one but two nfl teams are hinting they might be on the move and they can even share a stadium. the san francisco chargers and oakland raiders are now making plans to build a stadium in carson, california located in los angeles county. the teams say they would be forced to move in order to stay economically viable. the $1.7 billion stadium would only be built if the teams can not reach stadium deals in their respective cities. oakland's mayor says keeping the raiders is a priority but public funding must be considered. the nfl hasn't commented on the potential move. complicating the matters, the owner says they're looking to build a separate stadium in los angeles. and the daytona 500 is this
