♪ now at 11:00 o'clock a frigid friday gives way to a winter storm weekend. the bone-chilling cold moves out, heavy snow and the threat of ice move in. we'll have eye on the storm coverage and tell you how it's going to impact your saturday. good evening to you. i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. meteorologist kathy orr is tracking the storm's path and just how much precipitation will fall. kathy, what's latest? >> right now we're seeing data coming into the weather center.

we're looking at snow moving in as early as tomorrow afternoon and we're tracking it on storm scan3. we have snow, we have ice and we have rain and it's all closing in on the delaware valley. you see it over the tennessee valley where watches and warnings are already posted and it won't be long until this moves into our region. you can see winter storm watch goes into effect for philadelphia to the north and west tomorrow afternoon and advisory to the south and east for lesser accumulations of snow and ice. here's the area of low pressure moving toward the region. by the afternoon the snow is here. it changes over to ice and then to rain and it sweeps out during the day on sunday. now as far as what to expect with this storm, we're talking about two to 4-inches of snow along that i-95 corridor. we change to sleet and then to rain. we are going to be seeing reduced visibility especially tomorrow afternoon. it will be slow going on area roads and some hazardous travel. mainly snow through the poconos snow and sleet through the lehigh valley, a period of snow heavy at times through philadelphia even south and east and then changing over to rain.

as far as the snow amounts are concerned, we're talking about four to 6-inches in our extreme northern western suburbs. through the lehigh valley and poconos along that i-95 corridor two to 4-inches of snow. and then a coating to 2-inches for interior south jersey toward the shore and central and southern parts of delaware. with this storm we are going to be seeing a change over to ice and rain coming up we'll talk more about the timing that will change depending on where you live. right now knew information coming into the weather center. our american gfs model is coming in and i'll see to if i have to tweak snow accumulations. what's comes in for sunday and when we go back to blustery. that is the very latest. i'll have more coming up later in the broadcast. jess? >> okay, kathy, thanks. we will have our eye on the storm throughout the night. the "eyewitness news" team will be back on the air tomorrow morning starting at 5:00 a.m. with the latest forecast to help keep you up to date. >> no question this dangerous cold is changing the way we live, and changeing how businesses operate. new at 11:00 o'clock tonight "eyewitness news" reporter

natasha brown is live on rittenhouse square with the real costs of this cold. natasha? >> reporter: well chris, we can tell you we are seeing sparse crowds all throughout the city on this friday night because of this cold weather and while that is big business actually for some, it's hurting other businesses. while this bitter blast of freezing temperatures may be forcing many to stay inside it's been great for businesses like the fresh works in port richmond they're delivery service is booming. >> people don't want to come out because it's so cold. our deliveries went up five to 10% in the last couple days. >> reporter: delivery drivers have their hands full darting in and out of the cold so you don't have to. >> call when you're ready for it it's not that big a deal. car keeps you pretty warm. i'm dressed warm. >> they work on tips. customers tip more also taking into consideration these guys are out in the cold. >> reporter: not everyone is seeing sales soar. subzero temperatures are cutting into profits here at south

street with sales down 50%. >> after being here all these years i can absorb it. i feel sorry for the other people starting out in this business. any type of business. ever has to be hurting. >> very happy with it. >> reporter: chef fred kellerman of elements cafe in haddon heights, new jersey, is having a little fun with the upcoming snow forecast. creating a challenge for his customers. he's going to pay you if you predict the correct snow totals for saturday' as approaching storm. >>very inch that it snows on saturday i'm paying $2 per inch per person at the table up to $50. >> i don't think it's going snow. >> you think so. >> more than an inch? >> probably around three i'm thinking. >> reporter: well chef fred is actually only predicting an inch inch. we'll have to see about that. meantime many of the business owners we talked to say they're just counting the days until spring when business gets back to normal. we're live in rittenhouse square natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> okay, natasha, thank you very much.

new tonight the dangerous cold in our area has now claimed nine lives. the latest that occurred here in the city of philadelphia. five others have been recorded in montgomery county, two in lehigh county and one in berks county. 80-year-old mildred rem was found today in philadelphia. she reportedly died of hypothermia. officials say she suffered with dementia and frequently wandered away from her home where she was last seen on wednesday. tonight a bucks county woman is put agnew face on a growing national debate. recently diagnosed with a life altering illness she refuses to let that determine how her live ends. today i sat down to talk with her about her life, her illness and dying with dignity. >> nobody wants to die. i don't want to die. >> reporter: and yet barbara beach rose is faced with death. >> my live plan was to work a little longer and retire well and see my grandchildren grow up

up. i always -- this was like being hit in the face with a shovel. >> reporter: the 6484 old is diagnosed as early onset alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. >> when you get a diagnosis like that, is it scary? >> yeah. just on so many levels. there's no light at the end of my tunnel. i'm on that path and the only thing that's going to take me off of that path is my own interaction in it. >> reporter: beach rosa former hospice worker who knows the pain the end could bring. so rather than subject her family and herself to the final stages of her illness she's decided she will end her own life before she loses the ability to care for herself. >> i'm relying on my friends to kind of let me know when i start to be slipping, when it's time. >> reporter: death with dignity was recently brought into our collective conscious by brittany maynard. she took her own live in november following a battle with

brain cancer. >> talk about a brave woman to be able to handle all of that and still, you know, take a stance at the same time. >> reporter: beach rose will follow that lead at advocating for the right to a peaceful death inform her experience, even some doctors were afraid to talk were you what her life would look like in the months and years ahead. >> it's just like i was abandoned. that's it. you got your diagnosis. we're done. >> reporter: as we walked through her cheerful home barbara's love for her grandchildren was as bright as their artwork taped to the walls walls. >> i just keep thinking i just don't want them to have that memory of me. i can't have them witness this kind of death. she hopes there are many years ahead. but she is sure of this. she'll exert control before her illness takes it away. right now lawmakers in new york state are considering a bill to allow terminally ill adults to end their own lives. we checked today. there's no plan for similar legislation in pennsylvania.

well in other news tonight nascar suspended the driver kurt busch indefinitely after he's accused of of domestic violence in delaware. a judge there today issued a no contact order after finding that bush almost surely choked and beat his ex-girlfriend at dover international speedway last fall. the judge went ton say there's quote a substantial likelihood that bush will be involved in more domestic violence. this is the third time the former nascar champion has been suspended from racing. this one comes just two days before the sports biggest event the daytona 500. well new at 11:00 o'clock tonight philadelphia police have released a person of interest. they questioned in the stabbing death of the tour manager for music sensation nicky minute match thank you very much. picket was killed outside of an east mt. airy bar wednesday morning while a second member of minaj's group was critically wounded. investigators have identified two other persons of interest in this case. they are searching for them now

and they do believe they're close to making arrests. gps device called a blood hound helps police catch a suss specced bank robber right outside the franklin institute. only "eyewitness news" was there today asthma tuesday was taken into custody. he was captured just minutes after police say he robbed the susquehanna bank on written house square. a gps device was slipped into a money nag allowed officers to track their suspect down. new tonight a sprinkler pipe bursts flooding part of movie theater at the christiana mule mall. this happened earlier this evening in the lobby of the sin mark theater that. theater was evacuated. it's now closed until repairs can be made. a mailroom mix up leads to a fake id bust involving college students on the mainline. radnor police say a dean at an unidentified college received a package that was mistakenly delivered to him. that package was supposed to go to a person named dean unaware of the mistake the dean opened the package and found an empty picture frame.

eight fake ids attached it to. the students will not be charged because they did not use them. well happening right now thousands of penn state students are raising millions of dollars in the fight against childhood cancer. that's right. thon is in full swing tonight. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live on the penn state campus to show us how much good can come from endless hours of danceing. matt? >> reporter: chris speaking of dancing they started dancing here in the bryce jordan center around 6:00 o'clock. it is now a little bit after 11:00. so they only have about 41 hours or so to go. not too bad. this is thon as you mentioned it's fun, it's loud it's entire entirely run and it's basically a giant dance party if you ask any of the students here why they're here they'll tell you the same reason and that's for the kids. set your timers to 46 hours. and with that, let the dancing

begin. 700 or so students inside the bryce jordan center at penn state won't sit down until 4:00 p.m. sunday all by choice and all for one reason. >> there's no better cause in the world than i think for helping kids with cancer. report roar six years ago allison keim was one of those kids. a toddler diagnosed with leukemia she's been free of the disease now for four years. friday she could just be a kid. >> you having fun out here? >> yeah. >> what do you like most about coming out here? >> danceing with my thon. >> they can have fun in part because of reason raised at this event which goes towards helping those families struggling against pediatric cancer. >> it amazes us every year that they're willing to put their time and their effort and their heart and their soul into kids that they've never met before. >> reporter: it's that that motivates them. they raised more money than any other pray 10 in the from 19 years. why? the money that we've raised has helped cure three out

of our four kids. >> there's a theme here. call it service above self. with some quality dance moves mixed in. >> there's nothing better. the feeling that it gives you and to know that you're a part of something so much bigger than just yourself. >> reporter: and all of this activity here at the bryce jordan center really comes down to sunday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. that's when organizers will announce how much money that they have raised in their fight against pediatric cancer this year. last year, they set a new record by raising over $13 million. let's hope they set a new record this year. we're live in university park, matt rivers cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> matt, go get your dance on. >> new at 11:00 o'clock, some dramatic video showing flames engulfing one of the tallest residential sky scrapers anywhere in the world. the fire broke out at the 79 story torch building in due by tonight. strong winds fanned those flames and debris from the fire could be seen falling from several upper floors. now it's believed that no one

was killed here. there are no known injuries at this point. firefighters took about three hours before they got that fire under control. its cause is now under investigation. well torque night, a real honor foreman who dedicated his life to country. but what's being done to honor him is perhaps unlike anything you've likely heard of before. >> "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt with this tribute that took even his parents by surprise. >> i physical you he's had a heart of gold and compassion and deep love for people. >> reporter: ask donna and ken about their son ryan and you'll hear about a man who knew as little boy he wanted to be a marine. and religion was his rock. >> at a very early age he made a commit tom serve jesus. >> reporter: 2784 old ryan became a helicopter pilot and was deployed to afghanistan. but just weeks later -- >> a knock on the door about 3:30 in the afternoon. and two marines. >> reporter: on september 28th 2011, ryan died. his helicopter crashed crews

blamed a landing malfunction. ♪ >> reporter: this video of ryan is the last video the family have of their son. just six weeks before his death. >> whatever he did he did with all his heart. and he was a good son. he was a great friend. >> reporter: ryan's memory lives on through medals and awards even his favorite piano. but the family got a call recently to honor ryan in a way that shocked them. on a beer can. >> i said okay, guys god washington do we do with this. he said go for it. >> dog tag beer honors fallen members of all military branches their names and stories are on the back of each can. >> right now you can find ryan's name in seven states including pennsylvania and new jersey. burlington county is the only county in our area right now with dog tag but that will soon change. dog tag founder told "eyewitness news" philadelphia and the neighboring counties are his next project. proceeds from the beer go to different military charities. ryan' social security a ministry

hedge hog puppet up a hill. in another scene the rat knocks the hedge hog down. the dog seems captivated by the performance but what is he actually thinking? that's what researcher at yale university are trying to find out. >> similar studies have been done with human infants. human infants don't like the guy who is mean. we're doing the same thank with dogs to try to see do dogs morally evaluate as humans do. >> laurie san chose is the director of yale canine cognition center where all they do is study dogs and the goal is to learn everything they can about the dog's mind. >> dogs are just fascinating. we love them. they live in our homes. anyone who hangs out with a dog is constantly wondering what are they thinking? does he love me? >> reporter: to figure all this out in addition to the puppet show researchers put hundreds of volunteer dogs to a series of other tests. this one involves a book. the dog watches as his or her companion sits and reads. then she puts the book on the floor behind her.

a moment later someone comes into the room and takes the book book. >> what are really trying to see if we have miss information can they realize that. when they do roll lies are they motivated to help. >> the results again and again not only do the doing z seem to realize something is wrong but they also seem to be trying to alert their companions many of whom were not one bit surprised by their pup's concern to reactions. >> at home he's really observe van. he's always paying attention. he's a very concerned dog and humanizing things about him. >> what do you think about this. >> back at the puppet show when all of the scenes have played out the test dog does indeed seem to be lear receive the mean rat. so what if anything can researchers surmise from the testing they've done so far? >> the most surprising thing for mow has been um of orient our intuition intuitions about dogs are right. dogs want to communicate with us. >> the relationship between dogs

temperatures overnight. we're going to be challengeing record cold again before the clouds role in. our eyewitness weather watchers are reporting in temperatures that are already below zero in some spots. we'll start to the north where the temperature is 1 degree below zero in perkasie and it is going to be clear right through the early morning hours. another very cold temperature in delaware, new castle county, delaware one below being report reported by greg earlier. right now he says the temperature is five and let's take a zoom in here where it's still cold. right near florence, inform the temperature is two. in in burlington township a very cold night bundle up. and we are going to be seeing those cold temperatures right through tomorrow morning. now, you can see future weather the clouds will be rolling in during the morning. the snow moves in between noon and 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. where you see the lavender that's heavier bursts of snow move in through the din are in hour. that icy mix moves in between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. and then we change it over to

rain after that and all of this rain will be exiting by sunday morning. so sunday afternoon will be a pretty decent day. once again between noon and 2:00 the snow moves from west to o changes over to sleet and rain between 6:00 and 8:00 all rain between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. take zoom inform coating to 2-inches in woodbine and mays landing and glassboro medford lakes even middleton up through philadelphia two to 4-inch and higher accumulations to the north and west. we will be seeing a little bit of ice expected with this particular system about a tenth of an inch and as far as the cold tomorrow morning going for near record cold a temperature of seven the record being is. tomorrow the snow moves in the afternoon. changes to dice ice and rain in the evening. the temperature 34. on the seven day forecast better for sunday but brutal again for the beginning of next week. that's look at the seven day forecast. we'll be back with beasley right
