6:03 pm
afternoon. it piled up very quickly and it's going to keep piling up into the evening hours. now, the snow quickly covered area roadways and highways. plows and salt trucks are out in full force in many areas. this "eyewitness news" cam video shows trucks on the ben franklin bridge coming into philadelphia. but there are still many roads out there that are pretty treacherous at this hour. and right now storm scan3 shows the heavy band of snow that's covering the delaware valley. it's going to be with us throughout the evening before ultimately changing to ice and then rain. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. most of our area is under a winter storm warning right now. we have team coverage from all around the region showing you the impact of this storm. we're beginning tonight with meteorologist kathy orr she's live on the sky deck. kathy. >> natasha, it is raining snow here on the sky deck. you can see it's accumulating on me already. i measured 3-inches since it all began. we won't need the yard stick but you will need a ruler to measure this one because in many locations we'll end up

with three to as much as 6-inches of snow with some locally higher amounts. let's take you back to storm scan3. i want to draw your attention to the south and east. you can see cape may county where you see the pink and green, that is the mixing line moving toward the north. it's going to take some time to get into philadelphia. it will be the 9 o'clock hour perhaps by the time we see a changeover in the city so more snow to come. you see those darker returns of lavender in baltimore and washington, one going through cumberland county right now, that is a heavier band of snow that could snow at a rate of about a half inch to an inch an hour as those bands move through. a winter storm warning has been expanded along the i-95 corridor to the south and to the east in new jersey and also new castle county delaware. we're talking about 3 to 6 inches of snow. in the lower parts of south jersey and also through central delaware we're talking about a winter weather advisory for a lighter accumulation. here's a look at snow amounts right now. camden reporting in over 4-inches, drexel hill three

6:07 pm
it old fashioned -- old school way. i'm taking different measurements around the region. we're approaching that 3-inch mark here at eakins oval. maybe 20 minutes ago it was two and a half. we had decent snowfall rates down here. if you just pan dune little bit towards the parkway it's tough to see some of those buildings in the background so again low and visibilities so that's going to be an issue as far as driving goes and driving has been very slow all around center city this evening. that's going to be the trend. saw a couple plows finally come through the region. we'll break it down here with the cbs3 mobile weather lab and bring our tv out here. temperatures still holding steady at 26.2 degrees but again we are forecasting that slow rise. eventually we'll get that changeover from south to north. wind 1 miles per hour. actually people are out walking around, see a few people sled down the art museum steps. that's the late of the in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. next time you see me we'll be driving and i'll give you road conditions. that's the latest here.

burst of snow before you see that ice seem and of course a little bit further to the south you can see the rain building to build in. it's trying to move through the delaware valley. right here through cape may a little bit of an ice seem and then that will be changing over to rain so everything starting in the south and the east as far as the mild air and it will be moving toward the north and west. and it's going to be very difficult to scour out a lot of this cold air and that's why those snow accumulations have increased a couple of inches on both sides. instead of two to 4-inches for philadelphia you're more like three to six now. our eyewitness weather watchers saying it's yes it's cold, it's snowy and the roads are terrible. in philadelphia the temperature 24 degrees and joe is saying still snowing. shovel or not with freezing rain predicted flyers tied at two. it's a good night to stay inside. also want to show you a picture, some of the beautiful pictures that our eyewitness weather watchers are showing. in chesterfield new jersey

snow falling in the backyard with many locations picking up about 3-inches of snow already. take a look at one place where we're seeing some snow but not a lot of snow at jack frost/big boulder. this is where they want it. there are very good skiing conditions and you'll pick up about possibly 3-inches of snow there because you are on the northern edge of this particular storm. we are going to be seeing more snow in philadelphia and our suburbs than up in the poconos. visibility reduced in philadelphia and in trenton down .8 of a mile. even in reading about a half mile visibility with some of these heavier bands of snow. northeast philadelphia .8 for visibility. temperatures will be critical as we slowly warm up. that's when we'll see the changeover but at least the next i'd say three hours we will be in the snow. even washington still a little bit of an ice seem at 30 degrees. it's 33 in richmond so it's going to stay cold around here. storm timing, steady snow between now and at least 8:00 p.m. by about 10:00 seeing that changeover and then rain late around that midnight hour
6:19 pm
pretty much everywhere. now as far as the snow is concerned, we are looking it coming down at a pretty good clip at least for the next i'd say three hours justin. justin drabick is live in spring garden driving on area roads. justin, i was coming in, most of them were snow covered and you really couldn't travel faster than 10 or 20 miles an hour. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, kathy. you got to take it slow out here this evening. best recommendations for traffic because it's not good out here at all. we just turned offspring guard. plow did go through there but it was all packed down. rear wheel drive cars are sliding all over the place many people have their hazards on. best bet just stay inside. we just turned down 17th street. good solid 3-inches of snow is on the ground and you can see pretty treacherous here. we're going like you said about 10, maybe 15 miles per hour at best. that's what you got to do here here in center city. we have seen a few plows around that come through from time to time. but again decent snowfall rate going on. every now and then it gets up

to about a half inch per hour as visibilities have been reduced. it's that powdery snow. it's pretty slick. right now we're holding a temperature right now of 27 degrees in the cbs3 weather lab so we're just slowly climbing back up to that 30-degree mark but you can just see these roads all snow covered throughout center city. so, just take it easy this evening. if you can stay inside, that's your best bet. and venture out tomorrow 'cause we are tracking a little bit of a warmup in our forecast and for those exact numbers let's send it back into the studio. kathy. >> this will be a very welcome sight. thanks justin. as far as snow accumulations 3 to 6 inches over a wide area, one to three as you head towards interior south jersey and the shore and a coating to an inch down the jersey shore. a as we look ahead we're looking at conditions that are definitely going to improve. there's a slight chance of a little ice with this. other than that mainly snow changing over to rain. overnight temperatures will be falling down into the 20's, highs tomorrow in the 40's. some more melting going on.
