back at iconic high school movies and sometimes they are something like, wow, you want to be the mean girl. the thing i love about this is that bella comes at it like eye true villain, almost, as a mean girl and that distinction is really important because it's the villain in high school that makes us afraid. but also the villain that we the heros can sort of fight up against. ♪ ♪ >> that's what sucking at life looks like >> yeah, i am somebody's duff. >> so is everybody >> bella you are pretty nasty in the film which is done i because i have talked to you before and she's not like that at all. you are the nicest person ever. >> you are right. >> yeah, saves really fun to watch you take on that character. >> thank you, man. it was very interesting to play her. i felt really bad because mae bit man is i want to say 5 feet. and i am 5'8". she's so funny and cute and it's so hard to be really mean to her because literally anything she does i crack up >> i don't want to be anybody's duff. i want to be the dateable one.

and i was like, there are so many rules, like i had no idea there were so many rules. >> i wanted to go shopping i could have done that with jess and casey. i need to you give me real stock >> you have a uni boob, your pros true sucks, you need to stop dressing less mike wreck it ralph. boom. straight talk. >> you are like am i, okay, if you say so. what should do i to change? she never changes who she is. she realizes if the idea of being a duff is somebody that looks at what you are trying to say and realizes that it's not for me, and doesn't give it any power and just stays who you are, then like i think it's a cool thing. >> the best part about this is we are all actually really good friends. and really enjoyed just hanging out with each other. so it's very genuine humor and genuine things in the movie which is really nice >> that's true.

♪ ♪ in "mcfarland, usa," an inexperienced coach and a group of novice runners defy the odds as they train to compete in california's first high school cross country championship. >> we are the diaz brothers, enjoy this scene >> mr. white, the new p.e. coach. >> that's right. >> welcome it mcfarland. this is a farming town. these are good kids, smart kids. they just need a chance sat a better future. >> i found the story to be so interesting. so i am most curious what you found to be extremely surprising when you met the boys when you learned about them and their

story. >> when i met them, they were just excited. who wouldn't be to be in a hollywood movie. and to be in a hollywood movie about the community they were living in. this is kind of like a agreement to a lot of them. >> it's a real store by a real place. so as a filmmaker it doesn't get any better than that for me. so, of course, i wanted to be as authentic as possible. as specific as possible. for the first place you go is mick for land. >> all right, run a lap. >> wow. >> they are fast. >> they are. >> do you want another one? >> what was it like working with your actual real life counterparts? getting to meet those guys and what did they instill in you? >> you know what, i didn't know what to expect when i met the real johnny and luckily he was an amazing guy, very funny, very cool to be around. he invited me to dinner and everything. i am sure we all have similar stories. >> out of all the characters the only person i had never met before was jose cardenas and

my guy victor. and all of the other guys still live in the town. all of the diaz brothers, thomas was actually my coach. and to actually meet victor for the first time it was like we kind of just clicked automatically. it was crazy. >> you know that kid? >> yeah, that's thomas. >> do you know how fast you were going? >> are you a cop? >> because you were running a mile in five minutes >> so? >> i want to know just how true the film is to the real story. >> some of is very, very accurate. it is not a documentary. it's a true, true true hollywood. true, true, true hollywood. so if i can explain it like that. >> i was inspired fly jim white and his team and what they created and the leg at this that they have lived, but i was as inspired by the people themselves. >> i want to start a cross country team. >> that's a private school sport. >> we have kids here who seem like they can run forever. and they do it in extreme heat. some of them even run home. i have seen it. >> jim, let me ask you some you have coached cross country before? >> no. >> well, you sound perfect.

>> my cousin tells me hey can you take me to l.a., i have an audition. i was like, oh, yeah, sure it's my day on. so i took him. and they ended up like putting us two against each other for the role and i got it. >> oh, no. >> it was crazy. >> was he mad at you? >> i don't think so. [ laughter ] >> excited for me i think. >> i got involved with "mcfarland, usa" when my manager called me, he said he wanted me to audition for this role for david diaz. so i came and i did my thing and they told me -- they offer meets the part and they offered me danny diaz the day after. i am like okay, let's do it whatever. and then i come back the next day and they tell me, no you know, what the director loved you for david diaz. i was like, okay great. it's amazing. do you still want do it? >> yeah. >> these are field worker kids that nobody knows how to work harder than these guys. and when they bring those qualities to running, they were

unstoppable. >> you can't do that. ♪ ♪ >> these kids have the biggest hearts i have ever seen. >> coach white trained them so hard that when it actually came to race day it was actually quite easy for them. so in a sense how hard did you prepare before you started production on the film? >> i know the whole script before i get there. the whole script. i put myself a lot of pressure even before i ever meet these kids. i was ready to work the day i met them. >> uno, dose, trace. >> i used to get questioned by our principle. why do you do these things? i said why not. they have have been doesn't it. you gotta offer something, you know, they gotta seeing something different than a little community of mcfarland. if you stereo type that, you are going to be stagnant there. all of those kids now live in mcfarland, they are recreational board members running this, run that go on different committees. they are schoolteachers.

they are making a difference. of those seven kids that the diaz family had, one of them is a cop, a detective, the other ones are all teachers. ♪ ♪ >> these kids have the biggest hearts i have ever seen. ♪ ♪ >> uno, dose trace. mcfarland! ♪ ♪ an academy award winning writer who has hit a career slump is forced to take a job teaching screen writing at an east coast university in "the rewrite." >> i am hugh grant and you are watching "made in hollywood." and here say scene from "the rewrite." >> and the award for best original screenplay goes to keith mike follows paradise misplaced. >> it's tragic how much i am enjoying this. ♪ ♪ >> do you think you can find me just one job, just any job. >> there is something. teach a screen lighting class at binging tonight university >> i hate teachers they are frustrated losers who haven't done anything in liar life.

>> keith >> wherely is it >> tell me who keith michaels is, he's a screen mitre who kind of hit hard times. >> yeah, he's a screen writer who once won an oscar and how now reached a point in these career where no one wants him. >> he's offered a job teaching screen writing in a college he has never heard of. he has no interest? teaching or being there. >> here is area new home way from home. there is about 70 students that want to take your course. happy reading. >> i like to go in to screen writing knowing building a movie. so i did that with this. after i left i thought did hugh write this? it really kind of fit you like a glove. and i am sure that has to be do with your relationship with mark. your writer, director. and you guys have collaborate beefed in the past. >> yeah, mark and i have made three films before this one. we love each other. and he does write unbelievably great parts for me. >> i think hugh likes characters who have not fulfilled their

destiny. i think that's an appealing idea for him and that's very much who keith michaels is. >> you arrived on campus a mean recipients eighted. you dismissed your floors a mom you insulted members of faculty >> you don't line jane austin? >> i behave very badly and gets drunk spin cults people and has sex with his students does all of the things that you are not supposed to do. but then gradually comes to find that he actually likes teaching. and loves the students. and one student in particular who is a mature student, placed by marisa thome. >> oh, i have to tell you i love paradise, this place, i still watch it in my girls >> oh, your girls, are you a lesbian? >> i wish. >> you mentioned marisa thome, i thought she was really lovely and kind of very refreshing. and i am not sure i have seen her in this type of role before. what was that relationship like

as you guys went through the filming process? >> well, very good. i was nervous of her all the way through because, you know, she's such a great actress and her procedure is so different to mine. in that she's a hardcore new york method actor. >> she's just an an amazing actor and so focused on the part and character. and it was -- it was exactly what i thought taillight being. >> as long as you are alive you can forgive and be forgiven. that's my favorite. >> the "the rewrite" is really about the rebirth of thi
