ut will begin with our walt hunter who has more on what happened, walt. >> reporter: wrecking crews removing what little is left of the gasoline tanker truck. neighbors here in pennsauken are used to hearing traffic on route nine on, cars and trucks but this morning around 11:00a in m they heard explosions and minutes later there was an intern owe, incredibly, only two minor injuries and in damage to the homes here. the off ramp from route 90 to route 30 instantly became a flaming sea of burning gasoline, as an 8,000-gallon tanker truck flipped and exploded. >> i thought it was like a bomb that went off. >> reporter: burning waves of gasoline began rolling down the highway and down toward homes some as close as 40 feet away. >> it is frightening because it is right across the street and completely covered in black smoke. it is really scary. toxic. >> reporter: thanks to aggressive efforts by fire fighters 30 evacuated neighbors like dana rosario

who left with her dog, did not face any damage to their homes. officials say that in fact there were only two minor injuries a fire fighter and the truck's driver who was standing safely on the roadside when the first responders, rolled up. >> the driver was self extricated and met by bls unit on the ramp where he was evaluated, interviewed by police and transferred to the local hospital. >> reporter: officials are still investigating environmental damage from gasoline that leaked in the drainage area and nearby creek. that spill contained before it reached the delaware river. so far there is no cause for the crash which didn't involve any or vehicles, and fire officials praise what they describessed as heroic actions by fire fight are for keeping the flames from decimating a neighborhood. >> next time you see a fire fighter or police honor e mt shake their hand. you just don't splash a fire with what the tore put it

out, you have to suffocate witt foam. that is especially difficult in, these cold temperatures. right now here in pennsauken virtually all of the neighbors safely back in their homes. live from pennsauken, i'm walt hunter cbs-3 eye bitterness news. >> incredible walt, thank you. this video just into the news room of crews clearing the tanker from the scene. workers hall the wreckage of the tanker, on to a flatbed truck for removal. this all happened on the exit ramp from route nine onto route 130, in pennsauken. now that ramp is close to a number of homes, and new jersey reporter cleve bryan joins us live with that part of the story cleve. >> reporter: jessica, multi family is letting news to their backyard to let us know how close the fire came to the housees here. the back shed right here that is about 40 feet away from how close the flames came to the the property. we have talked to many people in the neighborhood that described seeing terrifying sights and hearing terrifying

sounds. >> four explosions and then one big great one. >> reporter: series of explosions alerted a pennsauken neighborhood that a dangerous situation was unfolding behind their homes at the route 90 off ramp. >> i looked out the back and there was a guy walk ago long there and then you heard another boom and then the whole house shook and then you see the flames. >> reporter: gasoline and burning vapors spread down an embankment toward several homes and black smoke filled the area. the authorities evacuated about 30 homes. >> seriously i was scared. do i leave my home. >> it looked like would it hit my house. i told my mom look let's get out of here. >> reporter: using chemical foams fire fighters successfully prevented all of the homes from being damaged. neighbors say this was too close for comfort. >> that off ramp is notorious. people come around that off ramp all the time. that is not the first time trucks turn over on that off ramp all the time. that curve is deadly. >> reporter: chris and jessica, the the wind is blowing from the ramp toward the homes and there is still a

smell of gasoline in the air. we understand from public safety official that is they are monitoring the air quality in the homes and they have told the people if you feel ill, if you smell something bad, call 911 get out of your house. live from pennsauken i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". our coverage of the tanker fire continues on line. to take another look at video from the scene and for latest development just go to cbs philly.com. crews are demolishing a building encased in ice over the last several days. chopper three was overhead at 52nd and location news west philadelphia. the building which once housed a doctor's office caught fire last week. the it became covered in ice as fire fighters doused it with water in what were then sub freezing temperatures. after the fire was knocked down and it was safe and officials say it had to be torn down. well, we had a nice warm up yesterday but it did not last long. we are being blasted now with

another round of arctic air. meteorologist the kathy orr is live on the sky deck with a look at how brutally cold it will get tonight kathy. >> chris, month of february has been relend less and it will stay that way. we will not make to it our average high of 46 degrees for the rest of the month. so this is going to be one for the record books. the we are seeing mainly clear skies and temperatures that are plunging, right now temperatures are only in the 20's and the teens. on storm scan three you can see a few clouds but they will give way to clearing during the evening hours. philadelphia 23. allentown 14. the poconos four. it feels colder because wind still out of the west at ten to 20 miles an hour. feels like single numbers through most of the region. allentown one below. poconos 14 below. they have a wind advisory, wind chill advisory for tomorrow morning for wind chills as cold as 20 below. wind chill as cold as 15 below but in the suburbs and five to zero below.

even down the shore wind chills below zero come tomorrow morning and we are challenging record lows across the region. philadelphia's record is two. atlantic city is two. wilmington's record is six. coming up we will talk about the brief break from the brutal cold in the seven day, a sunny stretch and if we will get out of the freezer anytime soon. i'll see you later in the the broadcast. >> kathy, thank you. >> we are following a developing story police in allentown opened fire on a suspect they say chased them or that they had to chase after stabbing a woman and a police officer. the it happened at north plymouth and east columbia streets. eye witt the necessary news reporter steve paterson is live in bethlehem with the very latest tonight steve. >> reporter: this is a man who stabbed a police officer hours after he stabbed his ex-girlfriend but first police say he broke into her home. we spoke to the woman who called police while this was all happening and they may have saved a life. >> i'm hoping that i saved her life. >> reporter: police say neighbor jennifer brown may have done just that.

at first she thought that she was hearing her on again off again neighbors fighting again but this time was far worse a lot of yelling, help me, help me. then i heard banging. >> i went over to the wall and i banged back and said i'm calling the the police. >> reporter: police say it was 42 year-old jerome nichols with his ex-girlfriend's home and stab her in the investigation, shortly after 3:00 monday morning. with police in pursuit nichols fled in his suv eventually crashing in the industrial drive embankment in allentown. >> the the police department, dereplied a taser without the effect. at that time the the suspect turned and engaged pd. >> reporter: it is when the officer saw that nichols was brandishing a knife he tried to make an arrest but was stabbed several times. a pennsylvania state trooper and second officer shot and then killed nichols. >> the shooting instant tenth that involved both the police

officer and a pennsylvania state the police trooper appears to be certainly justified. >> reporter: lehigh county district attorney jim martin says he is thankful after two successful surgeries. >> they are both very likely to recover and we thank god for that. >> i'm just grateful that he's okay and happy that they are alive. >> reporter: it bears repeating both the officer and that female victim stabbed in the arm th expected to make a full recovery. police tonight are not releasing identities but they do say the police officer is a five-year veteran on the force. reporting live from lehigh county i'm steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". an argument between two workers turns deadly in new jersey. police say edgar figueroa opened fire at his co-worker critically injuring him. shooting happened this morning at shields business solution a security company in moorestown. >> some employees saw

something, and our trying detectives are trying to determine who saw what at this time. >> police say figueroa later turn the gun on himself. they say argument was domestic. >> a bucks county standoff has come to an end with two men under arrest early this morning, police were call out for a burglary alarm at mike's gun shop in tulleytown. the suspect broke in the roof of the building there and barricaded themselves inside. they had to be blocked off. neighbors were asked to shelter in place but in the end in one was hurt. we are following breaking news out of new jersey where a judge has reversed governor christie's decision to cut state pension payments totaling $1.6 billion. this is a victory for the unions who sued the governor when he slashed those payments. christie says it was only way for the state to balance its budget. a spokesmen call the ruling, liberal judicial activism and says budget was passed by the

robbery at a gas station convenient store, this happened february 19th, at the sunoco on, bustleton avenue in somerton. the suspect walked in, demanded money from the register and was last seen heading for byberry road with an undetermined amount of cash. the same gas station was robbed at gunpoint, six days before this robbery. well philadelphia mayor michael nutter is challenging city employers to hire young people this summer. >> this year we have made it our krol collectively in partner slip with private company, non-profit and philanthropic community to offer at least 10,000 job opportunities to young people this summer. >> a mayor spoke at city hall today. he is working with local businesses encouraging them to bring teenager on board. and mayor says, he says summer jobs teachers work place skills and life skills as well. paying for college is no easy task but at drexel university a senior says his app, can help you by getting you free money.

qualify for. gray says there are a hundred million-dollar in scholarships that go unclaimed every single year. largely because in one knows about them. and it turns out, there are all kind available. >> there are school ship for blonde scholarships for people who are 6-foot five there are scholarships for people that are widow, scholarship for people who are right-handed. >> reporter: gray who waved the schooly down load cost for these student at science leader ship academy made his own way through college by taking months to find more than a million-dollar in scholarships, for himself. gray is hoping his idea will help solve a need for kid who think there is no way they can afford college. todd quinones, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". arctic cold, and challenging record temperatures, they are the the two big stories in weather and our eyewitness weather watchers are showing south pictures as well, it is a beautiful clear skies give way tonight fall. philadelphia is reporting a

temperature of 19 degrees in north whales, feeling wind chill railroad there. in south jersey we are looking at temperatures in the 20's for now, mark is in chats worth. he says wind lightening out, temperatures only 23 degrees. but what does it the actually feel like? well, wind feels the same between ten and 20 miles an hour from the west and ocean city, it feels like ten and middletown delaware jason is reporting a feels like reading of 11. bear delaware feels like nine. burlington 14. cherry hill it only feels like 11. outside it feels like 11 as well. this is view of the ben franklin bridge from campbell's feel. you can see clear sky and beautiful sunset but wind chill will continue to go down below zero overnight tonight. right now in the city at airport temperature is 23. and in 4 degrees that is just about it the in the poconos with wind chills below zero and reading the temperature is 17 degrees. right now we are seeing wind chills in the single numbers but below zero heading toward

north. come tomorrow morning at the bus stop or heading out the door this is what it will feel like, 13 below, poconos. nine below in allentown. between zero and five in philadelphia, zero in wilmington. within below in trenton two. below in millville. four below zero in atlantic city. by the afternoon wind chills mainly in the teens. that is just about it. by tomorrow another really cold and breezy day but high pressure will be settling in and that means wind will be diminishing. i want to draw your attention to two storms, one right along the gulf, moving off shore that is for tomorrow and then this strong storm you'll hear about on the national news. for us we will be just spectators but it is a strong storm that will stay to the south, we will see some cloud on thursday but for places like north caroline, south carolina a big snowstorm you can thank high pressure to the north for keeping ate way from boston, from new york and from frustrates we're on the northern fringe of the cloud shield. thursday when we see the the clouds carolinas will be

seeing the storm. offer night mainly clear challenging record cold, record two in fill arc we will go for a low of six. during date tomorrow mostly sunny, high of 24 degrees. not a lot of wind but doesn't take a lot of wind for a brutal wind chill which it is that cold. by wednesday we are looking at temperatures above freezing. out of the freezer but back in the cold for thursday and friday. the freezing on saturday little better sunday and monday and then we will be seeing some rain but i was searching for some warmth. look at what i found. the extended forecast through march 9th in the delaware valley. much below normal. >> you didn't find your warmth unfortunately. >> i didn't find it, no. >> that is looking way out there too. >> march begins over the weekend. >> yeah. >> kathy, thanks. >> sorry. good evening everyone. traveling right now in new jersey we are dealing with a situation in pennsauken still we have been talking about for quite sometime, it was that tanker truck fire on i90

eastbound to the ram route 130. still closed as a result. eastbound 90 ram in this area go to and from. give yourself some more time. on to some breaking news traveling in bucks county a very serious vehicle fire is closing route one. traveling approaching the the area of route 13. look at the smoke in the sky emergency teams have been called on to this scene. with the closure of route one in this area i would imagine they could potentially close as well southbound lanes. vehicle will fire again is on the north bound side of route one in bucks county at route 13 southbound one lane of traffic is getting bias the the left lane is compromise by more emergency teams aiding to that north bound incident. very active scene traffic not going anywhere so if you can avoid this stretch. also watch out for regular unusual rush hour delays on i-95 and schuylkill. we will be right

phillies continue spring training with pitchers and catchers join by the remainder of the team tomorrow. leslie van arsdal is there. >> chase utley says he actually sprain his and until january when he stepped on a baseball. he is dealing with that right now. but he feels good. he is optimistic about the teams chances. >> i think we have a much better team then people think. >> reporter: 2014 was a tail of two seasons for chase utley, he had a great first half but then slumped in the second. >> i kind of wear down as the season goes on. would i say that is the the case. i play the game fairly hard. you know, every game i'm spent. >> still chase played 155 games last season, most since 2009. manager ryne sandberg says he will give him sometime off. >> sometimes he loses his legs and when has lost his legs at the end of the the season, that is something for him and i do make an adjustment there.
