4:00 am
march has come in like a lion in what could be the worse snowstorm of the year we have an eye on the system tracking the snow hitting our area good morning i'm ukee washington. aim a he quarter von tiehl. the hundreds of schools are closed we have those at bottom of our screen right now. we have a team of reporters standing by, we will bring you latest conditions all across our area. first lets check with the latest forecast with katie in the weather center good morning. >> here we go we have change overtaking place as we speak, whether you have already begun to see snow or whether it is still rain for you this is definitely happening. you definitely got the moisture to work with with this storm system. remember what the set up is here we have a frontal boundary cold front with this large prolong storm dropping through and now cold air is catching up just as the same
4:01 am
time you have got an area have of low pressure with moisture riding up a along it. the that is why we have so much moisture and encompassing the entire delaware valley right now. obviously a a very define split as to what we have got depending on location but it does appear that the snow is starting to take over for delco, philadelphia county. the eye would say in the next half an hour, 45 minutes we will start to see snow flakes, mixing in, a bit of the wider zoom, we will zoom it the out one more time there is a back edge but this is a slow mover, folks. we will need the entire day to get this out of here. here's our up to date snowfall map still expecting a general four to 8 inches but looking for highest or the the higher, end of that range you wanting to south east of i-95 and down to say northwest tip of cape may county and across the the bay in northern kent county. the that is zone where we will hit the sweet spot of this storm.
4:02 am
the as we have got our storms in effect here we have winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories posted. the further north the the advicery basically means we will not talk as much snow. it is more a two to 4 inches heading up to the poconos. this definitely tells the story. we are seeing that cold air moving in just enough for these northern counties in northern places like quakertown doylestown pottstown now that you are at freezing mark we will look at a mix, eventually a as these temperatures continue to decline and that will happen it will turn up to straight up snow for everyone. temperatures, a as we said will continue their decline, accumulating snow it will taper from northwest to south east but as we are's kicking off typical evening rush in philadelphia is about the time the snow will be winding down for that area and overnight everybody clears out and we could be deal with some record cold. of course this weather is causing problems on the roadways.
4:03 am
lets look live from our mobile weather lab. we will check in if we can get to that shot the here we will check with carol erickson in a couple minutes. but first after we take this wonderful look from the cbs-3 mobile weather lab we want to get a check of the roads. the it looks like it is just raining right new how are the the rest of the road looking. >> hi, everyone, thanks, katie, as of right now i was trying to figure out where weather lab was. it looks like i-95. traveling mow so in your western shots. this interest sexist trooper and audubon. we will be traveling in this area. snow looks like it is put in but it is snowing out there traveling out and about the one thing i want to caution you is the the roads are slippery due to the rain we experienced before now the change. if you are traveling out and about throughout western suburbs those are areas we are seeing the snow in fact fall. as we change over to the vine street expressway we are
4:04 am
experiencing still some rain in the philadelphia a area, if you are traveling going to and from 76 or 95 using both side of the vine street expressway in center city, it will be a slick commute but no snow just yet. probably it will be making our way soon. traveling out and about our speed sensors are great high up in the 50's in pennsylvania pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware but things could definitely change. if you are traveling our area bridges we have speed restrictions of under 35 miles an hour. i believe it is 25 traveling betsy ross bridge specifically and even burlington bristol. give yourself some more time and be careful and abide by speed restrictionness weather like this. many septa buses are on detour so double-check their web site before you leave the house. patco running on a modified schedule amtrak and new jersey transit is cross honoring. we have a lot to cover this morning. coming down in the western suburbs our team coverage continues with "eyewitness news" report are jan carabao.
4:05 am
>> she joins us from doylestown bucks county. we have seen some snow coming down. when did that start good morning. >> reporter: snow started just a a few minutes ago actually on our way north from center city philadelphia here to downtown doylestown it had been range but change over has happened here as temperature dips right below freezing. in the meantime penndot crews were filling up the salt trucks. so far this winter season penndot has used 149,000 tons of the stuff, second highest amount all time just behind last winter. crews started salting the road as an as the the snow started to fall. crews didn't want to pretreat the road with brine because that washed away. they didn't want to throw down the salt because it would have been diluted and washed away a as well. just as an as snow started to fall salt started to go down and as soon as we have 1 inch of accumulating snow the the plows will come down and crews will start plowing the the snow. back here live on the scene in
4:06 am
doylestown at intersection of the main and state street the roads are in good condition and that is because it has just started to snow. cars are moving as these conditions are changing quickly we will stay on top of it the all and bring it the to you live throughout the the the morning. we are live in doylestown, jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". it is a pretty scene. we have to keep an eye on it. our team coverage continues in cumberland county. "eyewitness news" reporter nicole brewer joins us from bridgeton, new jersey. >> reporter: good morning. we are standing right off of route 77 where it intersects with route 56 and you can see at this point just a a light rain coming down of course is the spectation that it will turn over to snow and could fall heavily at times. so that is why new jersey governor chris christie has declared a state of emergency activating and coordinating the preparation response and recovery efforts for this storm, looking at potential for very hazardous travel in
4:07 am
addition to the potential for power outage is a cross the the state. governor dozen courage new jersians to drive carefully and remain off the roads if at all possible moving throughout the morning and of course as this storm picks up steam. that will give first responders and public safety officials opportunity to respond if neededded plenty of room to do their jobs. they have issued a delayed 11:00 a.m. opening for non-essential state employees this morning taking a look at conditions here it is just rain but the spectation is that it will turn to snow. it could fall heavily at times and we could be dealing with mixed precipitation. if you are in the state of new jersey, just be prepared for potential for pretty heavy snowfall as we move throughout this morning. that is latees from bridgeton cumberland county, nicole brewer cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> we want to see your snow photos and videos. send them on facebook or tweet us at cbs philly, just use the
4:08 am
hash tag cbs-3 snow and we will show them right on here. here's what else is happening this morning suv included with another vehicle in north philadelphia impact send the suv crashing right into a bank. but it is what happened next that has police launching a full investigation. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live at the scene to tell us all bit, good morning. >> reporter: ukee and erika this morning police are looking for at least three people. they say jumped out of the cadillac. is uv after it crash in the unite bank of philadelphia at broad and jefferson just over two hours ago here. stepped out of the way and show thaw white cat lack escalade is still in the bank. it it knock the atm clearly in the bank. as you can see the ceiling is damaged. the light is on the ground. it is a complete mess inside. l and i is investigate to go see if this building can stan for much longer. obviously don't bank on this
4:09 am
bank being opened at any point today. let's tell you how this happened. police say that this white escalade was traveling north on broad and struck a parked dodge orange charger here. we have video of that to show you there. impact of that crash sent the. is uv into the bank here and three occupants inside that suv got away, there are no injuries to report this morning because obviously those three people got away suv rather and purse and dodge charger did not report any injuries as well. back out live, we have video, of that camera there to the the side there police obviously have an idea what happened here. they know who may have been inside. they have gotten a away clearly but that is for now a at the this point trying to see what they make of this scene. l and i still inside taking a look to see what happened here this morning and trying to get a sense of what they can do to find perpetrators involve in
4:10 am
the crash this morning. no injuries to report. police still investigating. live from north philadelphia, justin finch, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, keep it the here all morning long, we have an eye on the storm this morning. >> lets look live from the mobile weather lab, our carol erickson is cruising around we will check with her and road conditions later this morning. how long will the storm stay in our area? how much snow will it dump as well? katie is up next with the check of your forecast. glad you are up early, this
4:11 am
4:12 am
here's a live look at the roads, for new north wales, montgomery county courtesy of the cbs-3 mobile weather lab. we are seeing some snow and we saw there in the western suburbs it is on the way. >> looking live, right now at images from the philadelphia international airport. snow is causing trouble for air travel. more than 400 flights in and out of philadelphia international airport
4:13 am
are already canceled today. the those notices went out yesterday, if you are scheduled to fly out of town check your flight status before heading out the door. no need to get to the airport and having to wait for a couple hours. lets check with katie fehlinger from the weather center. >> change over is happening just as we expect it would we are essentially split in half depending on your location. i can tell you this much, all you weather watchers we are rerelying upon you quite a bit this morning. so get to it. we want to see your reports. the lets get out to storm scan three. the it is so obvious, they tell a story we have snow off to the north and west. still raining to the south east of that rain/snow line and a tiny sliver of pink showing up. it is still not without question you might end up with sleet milk in but once we get past this storm and yes, it is expansive, it goes all the way
4:14 am
from two separate gulfs, gulf of maine to the gulf of mexico here notice how quiet is, on the western half of the united states. that my friend is heading our way. we do have better weather news down the the road here but for now we have a big mess to deal with. what we are looking at is two layers our future layer and future temperatures. what we show you this is the fact that temperatures will be declining as we go through the morning. even through next few hours we will hit that freezing mark or drop below it in philadelphia and that allows to us see rain turn to snow. notice how much moisture we have to work with. this will be with us right through morning and early afternoon and as temperatures continue to decline you will see potential for more snow. as we said earlier the spectation is a general four to six locally up to 8 inches especially through southeastern 23rd of our area but later tonight skies will clear and then, my friend we could hit a record low. visability ideal where we
4:15 am
have steady snow. lancaster for example allentown still not terrible at philly international which is good. i have a feeling that may change. we have steady snow throughout the early evening, four to 8 inches, general expectation but would i say more like four to six in philly. gradual clearing and bitter cold tonight. 8 degrees expect low as long as we hit it, that is new record for books. looking to tomorrow clear as a bell but still cold but look at the long term forecast. this is good stuff. we have to get through today and then we will rebound in the mid 40's and even a couple 50's by next week. only gets bet ter from here vittoria. >> that is what i like to hear. do you think it helps us that it rained earlier on. >> it may help at least a little bit because it will take time for that snow to start sticking and accumulating that is the initial help but it will not the last licensing because we have a lot of moisture here
4:16 am
good reason why i asked that because when you are driving specifically a lot of that slush is really what sets you back when you put your car in motion. with that rain on the ground maybe that could be a good thing for us but katie says things could change. as we look at rain shots we are taking a look first into new jersey. this is a shot of the 42 freeway and nicole brewer was in new jersey a as we caught up with her earlier on, only seeing light rain and that is what we are seeing in the traffic cameras. where we are seeing some precipitation in regard to snow would be within your western suburbs. we took a shot at trooper audubon and that is one area we are seeing snow flakes but we wanted to show you 42 freeway, and rest of the majors moving well. traveling from new jersey into pennsylvania, using betsy ross bridge and if you are traveling the commodore barry bridge elsewhere we are seeing speed restrictions of 35 miles an hour in regards to the weather this morning. we will see what happens with those other bridges.
4:17 am
the as you will notice traveling on i-95 it is a slick situation. we are not seeing snow. it is just wet and slippery. traveling on the pennsylvania majors specifically around center city philadelphia we should in the see too much of a problem if you are traveling in new britain township we have an overturn vehicle at route 313 and swamp. vehicle in the ditch there. slippery conditions. be very careful. erika. >> thanks, vittoria. >> right now we want to go to carol erickson in the mobil weather lab. what are you seeing and where are you exactly. >> reporter: we are on the the schuylkill expressway right now. we have gone past manayunk off to the right and we're continuing in a rain storm which is good because it has washed away a lot of the ice that was there. with these temperatures dropping throughout the day, we can fully expect we will find a little bit of icing but there may be a layer of snow on top of that coming. in fact there probably will be because we started to see this change over as katie hats been
4:18 am
talking b it has been slow drop temperature wise and that slow drop allowed the snow to come into those area. we are not seeing it here. as we go past belmont avenue and green lane and we head out to the schuylkill it is straight rain. if you are heading out in these areas and in south jersey you got an ordinary rain storm going on but things will be changing, as a state of emergency in new jersey. we are supposed to limit travel, conditions will be deteriorating throughout the rest of the day. we can just expect conditions to be probably at the their best right now and at their worst later on as we move through the rest of the afternoon. temperatures are moving down toward that freezing mark as we go through reading where it is 33 in a allentown 34 degrees. but they will continue to drop in the 20's. precipitation, there is plenty of moisture out there unfortunately for those sick of winter weather there is still plenty of precipitation
4:19 am
and as temperatures drop you will be over it and it the will be coming in the form of some snow. the good news is, tomorrow's bright, and sunny. finally. but also bitterly coal with the snow pack that we will fine in place but at this point no problem and i'm not looking further forward then next 5 feet and next five seconds. back to you in the studio. >> you are saying the sun will come out tomorrow. >> yes, she is. >> i bet you can sing it too. >> looking forward to that. >> right now you 4:19. we have an eye on the storm as snowfalls over our area. >> one more live look at road conditions at this hour. we will tell you how crews are getting a jump start on the clean up and when we can expect this to be over. katie says it can be an all day event. good morning family, see new a bit.
4:20 am
4:21 am
for latest of the storm
4:22 am
starting that process, katie. >> we are depending on your location you have seen that snow having pick up for a couple of hours now but we're going to be stuck with this for the better part of the day, foulke. we will start off by taking you to a snow shot. you have to look closely but it is out there outside pleasant valley middle and high school campuses here. 32 degrees. the light dusting on the road in the foreground between knows two streetlights. temperatures are right where they need to be for that to take place. eyewitness weather watchers are up and adam. thank you, guys. keep them coming here. we're seeing a milk bag from norristown to broomall, nottingham sam, bill fran jason respectively. some snow, mixing still some rain depending on location here and it is understandable. this whole strung out system extending back to texas has a very clear cut and well define split. it is taking place here.
4:23 am
it is right over our area. splitting our region in two. we have decent moisture here that eased up within the last hour but we are far from finished with this. we expect snow, generally steady throughout the the the day but it could be heavy anytime early on. slick surfaces, reduced visibility, slow travel of course. use caution. be careful out there. taking a quick peak of the eyewitness weather seven day we have to show you this because we have to look to the the better weather news which is temperatures a start to ease up and even climb a smidge above average next mid week which is lovely news but it does stay very coal in the meantime and today is a front loaded forecast as temperatures drop we will see it turn to snow eventually and as i mentioned earlier a general four to 8 inches is the spectation. of course weather causing some problems for us already on the roads and this is another live look from mobile three taking a look at traffic
4:24 am
all morning long with the ever changing conditions. so vittoria i said it yesterday, my friend, you will be on your toes. >> we are all ready for it. we're ready to a attack the day. game on. here we go. game time, x's and o's cbs-3 you tune into the right spot. you know what i mean as katie was saying we have to get to the worse to get to the best. best looks towards end of the week. the let's just ride this train. we will go first to the ben franklin bridge. traveling on the bridges generally speaking there is in volume to talk about but we have speed restriction toss talk b ben franklin bridge still no report of the speed restriction which is good news for you but i would say you want to join the ranks of the commodore barry
4:25 am
and bet thecy ross because they have speed restrictions of 35 miles an hour. good to practice that speed on all bridges. we are not seeing delays or problems. very early for rush hour. we are seeing slick spots and wetness in the philadelphia and new jersey area taking a look at this pud will here it is bubbling, if you will, it is just rain drops. this is schuylkill expressway in the too far from girard avenue. traveling in your western suburbs we are seeing snow around the the area of trooper, so traveling in that stretch be careful there. we have snow emergency a snow emergency advisory in effect for surrounding area. make sure you remove all park cars for 6:00 a.m. mass transit. double-check septa's web site there are buses on detour and new jersey transit cross honoring today erika. >> facebook message from betty who says just started to snow in greenville delaware. not looking forward to today. luckily my newspaper guy. i have a newspaper coffee and my favorite news station. we are tracking latest on the snowstorm hitting our area. here's a live look. you can see precipitation coming down. how about storm scan
4:26 am
three, when will we feel the brunt? when will it move out? katie has the time line on the other side. suspects flee after ramming a cadillac into a bank. we have a live report when we come back.
4:27 am
4:28 am
march has come in like a lion in what could be the worst snowstorm of the year and we have an eye on the storm tracking the snow hitting our area. good morning, glad you are with us, i'm ukee washington. i'm erika von tiehl. we have hundreds of schools closed we have those at cbs philly.com and also at the bottom of the screen. we have a team of reporters braving those conditions with the very latest. >> and it will be a slow mover. >> oh, yeah. >> this has been a slow mover anyway. now we are on day three of the very same storm system. how often does that happen? we talk about these
4:29 am
extremeness march where we see temperature swings and crazy storms that come through but three day system is on the atypical side. let me show thaw storm scan yet again. it is an obvious split we've got rain south east of the rain/snow line and snow northwest and sliver of pink to indicate where mixing is taking place. not too much pink showing up this morning. we are going to see that change overtake place relatively quickly from rain to snow. it may take time to start sticking, give it a half an hour but look at these plumes of moisture and impulse that he is get sent through. that means you will have potential for decent accumulation here. there is a back edge to this off toward say north central pennsylvania but because this is so slow to retreat it will have sometime to work with and time to dump some snow. look at this strung out batch of snow that we can expect from now, up until later on
4:30 am
today and notice where bull's eye is right through our area. that is why we're still expecting a four to 8-inch swab to fall. specifically if you want higher end of that range go from south east of i-95 just away from the the highway down in the northwestern tip of cape may, cumberland counties atlantic counties and kent. that is where you'll have a bull's eye of the heavier snow out of the storm. lets time it the out temperatures are going to be declining throughout the day, so if it hasn't turn over to snow yet, it will eventually and snow will taper too but in the until later on this afternoon. the the snow does come to a full close this evening from north west to south east but watch your slick travel, folks. overnight we could be dealing with record coal. crazy stuff. the weather, has been causing on problems on the road. lets take you to a live look from our mobile weather lab. we will check with meteorologist carol eric
