5:30 am
we have an eye on the storm, rain switches over to snow in bucks county, look at it in the right part of the screen, timing of the storm is just terrible it will make your morning commute a headache but sticking around the better part of the day too. this could shape up to be largest snowfall we have seen so far this winter. >> we have hundreds of school closings and delays, including philadelphia public and archdiocesean schools. we have a team of report's cross the region showing you what it is like if you are getting ready to head out. we will check in a bit. but first lets check with katie and check in with the latest on our snowy forecast. >> good morning. we continue to track rain/snow line that is dropping south and as a result some might look out the window and it is still just raining. that will be changing with
5:31 am
time. as you look at just last three hours here on storm scan three the purple is new the bigger issue. in other word snow is taking over as colder air bleed from north west tsouth east in our region. if it hasn't change over yet it is just a matter of time. you can see there are pulses where you you have darker shade of purple, that is radar 101. we have steadier pockets of snow currently falling and moving through at a quick clip but we are far from finished with this, folks. this front will be slow to retreat and it will have pulses of moisture on an off with time. i say it will snow anytime here today, however, you will see times where it comes instead i. winter storm warnings are posted in the hot pink area, the entire region included until 7:00 p.m. that goes until 7:00 p.m. tonight but lehigh valley, pocono on the northern edge it doesn't appear you will have
5:32 am
snowfall totals. meanwhile walking you through future wetter here we have put temperatures as well as future radar on as a base layer because what you will see as temperatures fall the snow takes over and then everybody is included here. notice we will have some thumping snow by midday but looking to the typical evening rush that is when things will be winding down and then skies clear and temperatures drop off that much more readily. here's how it shakes out, heavy snow, significant amounts. four to 8 inches in a general swab for southeastern two-thirds's of our area main impact happens at anytime but we are seeing that take place right now. into the early evening the at least plows will have a chance to get through. it might in the be as bad as things taper off in the north and western mess counties. as day progresses, notice the temperature. it is falling. because it is, a relatively prolong event for us, we will
5:33 am
easily pick up 4 inches. many of you just south east of i-95 can pick up eight vittoria. >> thanks, katie. good morning. we will take you to i-95 to give you a nice look around bucks county. let go out to i-95 right around route one. traveling in either direction is quiet and we are only seeing i would say, eventy toe in this shot here a few flurries maneuvering about but it does seem that the lens is covered with at least water. we have a mixed bag we are eag in the traffic camera. some areas we are seeing good amount of snow and other areas we are seeing wetness but traveling on i-95 you will want to be mine full of that precipitation regardless and take it easy but road are great right now everybody still sleeping i think and it is still early for rush hour. look at 476, in the seeing too much snow out there but a few flurries here and there. the road are just damp, slick
5:34 am
and wet. no signs of the rush hour just yet but take it easy traveling betsy ross or commodore barry we have speed restriction toss 35 miles an hour. mass transit checklist septa, many buses are on detour. 102 trolley experiencing high water. they are shuttle busing there. patco speed line maryland filed, new jersey transit is cross honoring. call ahead at the airport. >> vittoria, thank you. our storm coverage takes to us bucks county where we will fine jane carabao and out in doylestown. what a difference an hour and a half makes, jan. >> reporter: exactly what a difference 90 minutes makes. that is when rain changed over to snow at 4:00 this morning. ninety minutes later and road look like this. this snow is steadily falling and that is what the intersection of state and main looks like after 90 minutes. a couple tire tract in this area but road conditions here are quickly deteriorating. we have heard from that penndot spokesperson that says
5:35 am
they have full compliment of crews out you the here on the road. more than 400 trucks. they have used 149 you this tons of salt already a county and that is the second highest of all time only second to last winter. you can see as this car comes to this intersection it is moving very slowly. that is the best idea as it makes it way through the intersection but crews are out and salting as soon as snowfalls like it is. once there is 1 inch of accumulation on the ground that is when plows put their blade down and clear snow off the road. if you are an relevant i morning driver be extra careful because right new they are salting the road. live from doylestown, yan carabao, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". our storm coverage continues from cumberland county where rest tenth are dealing with rain and slick roadways this morning. "eyewitness news" reporter nicole brewer is in bridgeton, new jersey, nicole, good morning. >> reporter: only real change in the last half an hour is
5:36 am
that this rain has definitely pick up. the temperature still dropping off but again we are expecting to see lighter rain turn over to heavier snow in parts of the new jersey and here in cumberland county. looking at route 77, still all blacktop at this hour. in real problems to report here at intersection of route 77 and 56, still waiting for this change over. of course as katie has been mention ago this is expect to come so governor christie is already preparing declaring a state of emergency and issuing an 11:00 a.m. delay for non-essential staff members in state offices n cape may county we have closings for the day. all senior centers will be shut down due to this weather and cape may county, transportation will be canceled with the exception of the meals on wheels and dialysis transportation, both of which will run on schedule. if you live here in new jersey, please heed that warning. i know it is just rain but we
5:37 am
are expect ago this to change over to snow. so use caution if you have to head out and about. if you can stay home why not the do so that is latest live from bridgeton cumberland county nicole brewer, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> that is my personal advice. >> i'm digging it. thanks nick, appreciate it. >> we were like to see what your neighborhood looks like. send us pictures on facebook twitter and instant gram using hash tag cbs-3 snow or up load them with the cbs philly weather app and might see it later on tv this morning. want to update breaking news this morning, two cars collide in the north philadelphia intersection and impact send that suv right in the bank. now police are on this case. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch joins us from the scene. that suv has been removed. good morning, justin. >> erika good morning. they have moved that away from the scene. that is a car that careened
5:38 am
right into this bank just after two with major front end damage, driver side door has been ripped off. it makes a pretty big destruction inside, ceiling brought dunn to the ground, atm wedged against bank wall power has been shut off here and clearly this bank won't be opened for business today at all. lets get to video at the scene just after 2:00. see an are range dodge charger. that car was struck by the suv just after 2:15 or so going straight in the bank as a result of the impact here. this united bank of philadelphia has had some pretty major front end damage to the doors and windows here. it will likely not be opened for business at all today. here's what we know, there were at least three people inside, they all ran away from the scene shortly after after that accident leaving the driver of that charger here at the scene to talk to police
5:39 am
here on the scene. lets go back outside live, police are new looking for at least three people inside of that car. they have had some help too as well as a camera right at the the corner of jefferson and broad that may give them inside as to what happened here when that wreck happened around 2:15 this morning. those three guys got away. no one here questioning any medical help so no injuries to report here but morning mystery here in north philadelphia we are live, i'm just continue finch for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> justin, thank you. we want to get back to the snow storm. >> cbs-3 mobil weather lobbies outside on the road we are checking with carol erickson to see what it is like, we will have it up for you this morning. snow is falling in center city as well, road are wet the outside city hall. we will do track and weather together on the three's coming up next we have a report from our correspondent i like to call her in delaware rebecca le gates, dover lake forest school closed.
5:40 am

5:41 am

5:42 am
snow emergency route, go ahead and move it before 6:00 o'clock hits. parents, students listen up philadelphia public and archdiocesean schools are closed with 600 other schools. katie will update your snowfall forecast, just how much will you see in a minute. philadelphia mayor michael nutter will propose a hefty property tax increase as part of his final budget. our sister station kyw the news radio says mayor will propose a 9 percent property tax hike if city council okays it revenues will provide the city school district with a extra 100 million-dollar. new this morning hillary clinton makes her first public comments amid allegation that is she used her private e-mail account for official business as secretary of state. late last night she tweeted quote i want public to see my e-mail, i asked the state to release them. they said they will review them for release as soon as
5:43 am
possible, end quote. house committee looking in the been gas a tack issued subpoenas for clinton e-mails related to their investigation right now it seems like that rain is turning to snow across the area. >> it is at this point we are seeing more purple on the radar indicating the snow then we saw when we first went on the the air. speaking of temperatures, across our eyewitness weather watchers. they are up and adam and we are so grateful in this morning. we have a mixed and we will rely on their reports. 34 degrees sent in from kerry she at the this point is in mount laurel, 34 degrees, just starting to see snow flakes milk in. just marginal enough in that area where we will see changing overtaking place. that is just one example of that. further up to the north i have a feeling what we will find
5:44 am
here 32 degrees from john jenkins. straight up snow in perkasie. he has a comment. very pretty view up there. he is in a snow globe. i love that. stinks if you have to travel in that. be careful out there we will check with vittoria with how it is looking on major road. mark sent in from the last half an hour 35 in chats worth and still it is coal. a cold rain but still just rain for him right now. so, as we go next over to storm scan three what we will fine here again is a purple, taking over majority of the map in our area at this point and on the tail even, right there that dark are shade of purple. there is little pulses of steady moisture trying to work their way in. as they do so and cold air drops in we have no problem with the way we have forecasted that storm since yesterday. a couple tweaks since yesterday to our eyewitness weather snowfall map but we are confident in this zone from say perry winning will blue to cape may county and
5:45 am
kent you're looking at four to 8 inches of snowfall with the sweet spot that makes it up here to six to 8:00 from say south of the i-95 corridor down to the northwest tip of cape may and northern kent county. i got to finish it off with good news right. and at 9:00 a.m. temperatures and, it is erika was loving this. a round have applause. eyewitness weather seven day, two days straight of 50 plus degree weather. we will take it. vittoria, over to you. definitely we will take it. it is snowing outside. traveling out and about on the schuylkill expressway at city avenue you will notice it is in fact snowing and it seems to be getting heavier in this shot here. i will direct your attention to the headlights. if you are traveling on the the schuylkill expressway westbound direction approaching city avenue where
5:46 am
we usually get in the rush hour but we are seeing that volume start to bill. what is going on earlier today, is throwing me off. usually around this time we are still, at least in my head we're moving toward rush hour but right new we are still waiting in the wings. we are half an hour behind. so in a half an hour i would say rush hour but right new we are dealing with wet red ways and precipitation probably causing low visibility. as we look at i-95 around philadelphia international airport. we will not see so much snow. we do have flurries but not as much as we were seeing on the schuylkill. traveling or plan to travel at the airport today call ahead, many cancellation is today. the lets talk mass transit. many septa buses are on detours. route 102 trolley is shuttle busing. be mine full of that. patco, amtrak running on modified schedule and new jersey transit will be cross honoring. norristown high speed line will be making local stops,
5:47 am
excuse me every 15 minutes. good news there as well. snow emergency routes we can express this enough when you are dealing with the snow advisory, we have to remove the the car by 6:00 a.m. or it will be towed and we know what a bummer that is. am i right? speaking of bummers, traffic backups can be bummers. you know how it is. you can always get updated fur about traffic stops in your area, with the cbs philly app. down load it now on itunes or even google play erika a. as katie and vittoria was telling us that rain switched over in parts of our region. if you can the in the take the day off, you do want to take it easy on the road. jim melwart is behind the wheel checking conditions. how are things looking good morning, jim. >> reporter: what a difference an hour makes. i'm on the turnpike westbound a approaching valley forge king of prussia. i am not sure if this translates on the tv but the the left lane of the turnpike,
5:48 am
three lanes here and left lane is snow covered heavy snow falling here affecting visibility, a bit at this hour here from germantown pike from collegeville, east norriton, plymouth meeting and germantown pike is coated and those hills are slick. if you can talk about worse timing i'm in the sure fit is possible for a snowstorm to hit, at a a worse time at 6:00 a.m. and morning rush. we are seeing this snow affect the turnpike again, the left travel lane is already covered a approaching king of prussia. >> i came in three hours or so ago and i saw a number of salt trucks on the side on the ready have you seen anything out there. >> yes, i have seen the salt trucks out, they have been dropping the salt, really there wasn't anything to plow until maybe a half an hour ago. i did a live the shot on kyw,
5:49 am
on news radio at 5:00 a.m. and said it was just a wet rain, mixed with snow. nothing was sticking. then next thing you knew it was sticking to the roads. >> on the upside it doesn't look like too many people on the road, what have have you noticed. >> i did have a couple cars go flying by me which felt like i'm going about 45 or 50 and two cars just passed me kind of felt like that was a little fast for conditions but definitely right now, volleys light and we can only cross our fingers and i hope that continues so they can treat those road. >> there are a lot of speed restrictions on the road and bridges, so please if you have to go out adhere to that. we will get back to you jim. >> all right guys. and if you are in the by a tv you can stay on top of the storm with cbs philly.com. get updated forecast, traffic backups and school closing. share your picture with snow at the home page at cbs
5:50 am

5:54 am
many may have woken up at 4:00a in with snow on the ground already. but looking at this three hour loop we started off where in majority of the radar was just showing rain. i can see how purple was taking over. the cold air is funneling in. as it it does so it is coming through with impulses of good moisture to work with. temperatures continue their decline in the next couple hours that snow will a accumulate and accumulate quickly. the snow will be tapering from north west to south east. we're talking across and spanning the entire delaware valley from berks, lehigh, north hampton county south east. so at five or six or 7:00 p.m. is about the time it is wrapping up, completely for philadelphia vittoria. >> sorry everyone, good morning. the crazy day with all this snow. good morning everyone. traveling out and about right now we are going to, noticing flurries on the schuylkill expressway. it is finally hitting philadelphia a area started within the the western suburbs and delaware. now making its way over
