officer robert wilson black bunting hangs at the 22nd district. outside wilson's home neighbors cleared his stoop and left a small memorial to a brave officer and friend. >> it's just, it's a shame. >> i just feel sorry sad that's all 'cause, you know, he got little kids. >> reporter: wilson died protecting the people inside the game stop on 22nd and lehigh thursday engaged in a fierce gun battle. >> he redefined what a hero is all about. one, he stepped away from the

counter. there were civilians there where i countered four behind the counter. he was taking rounds. he was actually being hit during the exchange of gunfire but he continued to fight continued to shoot. >> reporter: more than 50 rounds were fired. the fight caught on store surveillance video. officer wilson, a 30-year-old father of two was in line buying a gift for his eight-year-old son just after 4:30 when police say brothers, 29-year-old carleton hipps and 24-year-old ramon williams walked in with semi automatic weapons and announced a robbery. >> the officer was a warrior. he fought to the very end firing at both of them. >> reporter: the eight year veteran was shot in the head, his partner engaged the suspect shooting hipps in the leg. >> he was one of our very, very best no, question about it and we're all in shock and we're all going to suffer this loss for a very, very long period of time.

>> reporter: and officer wilson's son turns nine on monday. he was at the game stop buying him a video game because he had done so well in school. the suspects have now been charged with murder and attempted murder. one of them has given police a full confession and says they were at the game stop because it looked like "an easy target." we're live in north philadelphia tonight i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> diana thank you very much. the cbs3 i-team is digging keeper into this story and tonight it uncovered disturbing new details about the criminal history of the suspects now charged in there killing of officer wilson. they could face the death penalty. the two brothers lived together here on the 1200 block of north hollywood street in brewerytown. police execute add search warrant of the moment and recovered an ak-47. this isn't the first time the two have run into trouble with the law.

>> ramon williams has two arrests, carleton hips has six arrests. he got out of prison in i believe it was 2009. >> reporter: the i-team found williams arrest record include retail theft. hipps' record contains multiple convictions. he was sentenced to 10 years behind bars. hipps only served the minimum five years before being released on parole in 2009. state probation and parole board documents obtained by the i-team showed hips received a positive recommendation from the department of corrections. # board determined he was not a risk to the community and demonstrated motivation for success. and as of thursday carleton hipps was still on county probation. he met with his probation officer on tuesday and he noted no problem. under county regulations hipps was prohibitd from possessing any firearms.

charges of corruption. hours after a law enforcement official told cbs news the justice department is planning to file criminal charges against senator menendez. he called a new conference to fight back. >> let me be very clear very clear. i have always conducted myself appropriately in accordance with the law. >> reporter: the democrat from union see has drawn scrutiny for his relationship with eye doctor solomon melgen during his news conference mendez acknowledged a two decade friendship with melgen and says they've exchanged birthday holiday and wedding gifts but nothing more. >> every action that i and my office have taken has been based on pursuing the best policies for the people of new jersey and of this entire country. about the senator's troubles with south jersey voters friday night. i have a pretty positive opinion of him in general but it's unfortunate if it turns out to be true. >> i think this is true. >> menendez went to the senate in 2006. were his seat to become vacant respect governor chris christie would pick a replacement but the senator inactivities that won't happen. >> and i am not going anywhere. mendez is one the highest ranking hispanic members of the congress. he did not answer questions during his news conference in newark tonight. >> we're following several breaking stories right now. first chopper three over a fire at a nursing ho em in montgomery county. this is the gwynedd square nursing center on sumneytown pike in lansdale. one wing of that nursing home has been evacuated. the residents have been moved now to a different section of the building. so far no injuries have been

reported. breaking in gloucester county new jersey firefighters are battling flames at a home in glassboro. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is on the scene with the latest. >> reporter: two women very lucky to be alive tonight. this happened a little over two and a half hours tonight. let's go to some of the cell phone video. we're told a mother in her 80's and her daughter were inside the house this fire broke out. fire investigators are working to find a cause of the fire. the good news is we're told nobody was hurt. we were told two women were treated for smoke inhalation. ly i talked to the next door police. he called police immediately when he saw the flames. >> i'm loss for words at this moment. i feel for the family at this moment. >> reporter: fire crews and police in glassboro expect to be out here for the next several hours.

reporting from glassboro david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> there is more breaking news in burlington, new jersey. firefighters are on the scene of a sinkhole that forced a family to evacuate a home on the 500 block of columbus road. chopper three shows building officials assessing the safety of the house. the family meantime may be displaced overnight. and concerns tonight over the job security of 50 firefighters in atlantic city. for the last four years ac has paid for those firefighters through a homeland security grant. well, late today the firefighters union and city administration pushed through a deal to reapply for that grant. but with the level of staffing below what the grant requires earlier today mayor don guardian told "eyewitness news" that continuing to use that america vigil doesn't make long term economic sense. he agrees with state recommendation that is atlantic city only needs about 180 firefighters. right now they have 236. >> it's the right size number in our financial situation we

need to do what's right today. >> any possible layoffs would likely tap at the end of the year. >> "eyewitness news" has just learned tonight that the fbi is now involved in the search for a hissing teenager from newtown square delaware county. today hundreds of volunteers spent the day searching for 13-year-old came man hayek. he was last seen at his hairston drive home on wednesday night. "eyewitness news" spoke with came man's parents today. they say the young man left the house after a school progress report arrived that showed some failing grades. >> we thing he, you know, penned it and decided to take off in the middle of the storm. we don't know whether he went to wayne, if he hospitalized a train to philly. we don't know if he got his directions mixed up. >> cayman was last seen wearing this vertebrae jacket plus black ski pants and hiking boots. the search continues tonight for 52-year-old stanley lang.

lang shot 49-year-old ingrid sheets to death during a domestic substitute dispute in montgomery county. that happened late last night. lang is 6 feet call tall. he has a muscular build and authorities say he's armed and dangerous. >> tomorrow morningsist have years since booed dee sunday. the demonstration in selma alabama that helped to bring national attention to civil rights. hundreds of demonstrators attempted to march to montgomery when they encountered a wall of protesters on the bridge. >> well, ceremonial swearing in today at the pentagon for the newly minted defense secretary ashton carter. the philadelphia native took the oath of office administered by supreme court justice elena kagan. carter has been on the job since last month after taking

over for chuck hagel. he's already traveled overseas including one visit to the troops in afghanistan. we learned today that our cold weather has any other put a freeze on hiring. job growth now at its strongest in more than a decade. the labor department says the economy added 295,000 new jobs in february, the 12th consecutive month the economy has gained more than 200,000 jobs. the unemployment rate fell from 5.7 to 5.5 percent. hiring improved in the manufacturing, construction, retail, finance and healthcare sectors. >> it is not exactly how you want your ski trip to go. a gondola gets stuck stranding passengers in the air. in a moment you'll hear how this happened. >> also ahead here tonight we have brand new details about how the injured harrison ford is really doing following the plane crash. we'll hear from the doctor who was on the scene right after that plane went down. kathy. >> more record cold tonight

>> new at 11 o'clock tonight some crews in delaware county manage to rescue a horse that had become stuck in a ditch. it happened right off of middletown road in glen mills. we're told that someone was riding this horse. they were not hurt. but crews had to work feverishly to get that animal safely out of a ditch. they did eventually succeed. the horse managed to pull itself upright and onto all fours. >> helicopter used to rescue steers in italy who became stuck in their gondolas. it started when a tree was blown over by high winds and landed on the gondola cable.

184 skiers had to be brought safely to the ground by rescuers and luckily no one was hurt in the end. harrison ford recovering from surgery to repair broken bones after he crashed his vintage plane on a california golf course. cbs news learned ford broke his ankle and possibly pelvis when the plane experienced engine failure and clipped a tree. >> with the help of huge cast of people that were volunteering there we were able to stabilize his spine extract him from the airplane and get him a safe distance away. >> ford is recovering at a nearby hospital and has yet to meet with investigators. a preliminary report could be released in a movement the full investigation will take about a year. >> big change coming to the beer business in pennsylvania. beer distributors will now be allowed to sell 12 packs. normally when you buy from a

distributor you have to buy a case or a keg but lawyers for the liquor control board have changed that now with an advisory opinion. distributors seem to support the measure. they say it offers more convenience for consumers. however craft brewers are not so happy. they think they could be disadvantages with fury sources, the manufacturers and market themselves. >> on the cbs3 health watch people depend on medications every day but what happens when they expire? you may not have to throw them away. tonight reporter stephanie stahl tells was should stay and what should go. >> reporter: pain relievers are good for anything from a headache to a bad back. you reach for some ibuprofen but it's expired. can you still take it? will it work. >> these should be stable for a long period of time. pharmacist and doctors

can't officially recommend taking a drug past its prime but -- >> there are isn't medications that will be stable and retain their full effectiveness for even many years beyond the expiration date. >> he says ibuprofen like most pain relievers is safe and effective. that includes acetaminophen and percocet. are you surprised. >> while they might not be as strong i still think they might work. >> they have an expiration date for a reason. i wouldn't trust something that's expired. >> reporter: while some medications can lose potency over awhile. it was found in 88 percent extended after least one year beyond their original expiration date. pills that are coated tend to last longer. among the other medication that is usually retain past expiration include stomach

aids sleep aids and antihistamine. are these decongestants going to last over time. >> they will. >> reporter: but there are some medication that is don't last. aspirin. its -- other that is should never be taken past their expiration antibiotics epinephrine, drugs in liquid form and prescriptions for chronic conditions. >> it might not work as well to control your blood pressure or if you have diabetes not work as well to control your blood sugar and that's where it can cause your harm. >> reporter: whether or not drugs lose their effectiveness depends a lot on how they're stored. experts say heat and humidity will cause medications to break down. that's why you should always keep them in a cool dry place. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> cool and try. >> cool and dry, that sounds pretty familiar, right. >> but not cold and dry. >> not cold and dry. >> right. >> well, the weekend is upon us and i think the one word

everyone is hoping not to hear is snow. >> the only way you'll hear about it is melting. it is going to get colder before it gets warmer and it is pretty chilly out there. our eyewitness weather watchers have contribute to their current temperatures and you'll see them scrolling at the bottom of your screen. in center city philadelphia we're going down into the teens. we could break that records across the region tonight no the in philadelphia but in some of our suburbs. we have mainly clear skies many capturing great pictures of the moon. if you capture it send it to. me. millville at 12 and cold all the way down the coastal plane, even out to the west. nashville 27, little rock 32. eventually everyone will be warming up. let's take a look at some of those numbers to beat come tomorrow morning. the poconos 18 below not going to break that. allentown one. we're not going to break that

but we will challenge the record in trenton of seven. philadelphia nine. we will come close. ly atlantic city airport and wilmington both of these numbers will be challenged overnight for a new record. so how are we going to go from temperatures in the teens to temperatures in the 30's, maybe even 40's tomorrow. well, it's hard to do in january with that low sun angle but right now in march we have more direct sunlight and of course a larger angle and that provides 67 more warming. so we'll warm up very quickly during the day tomorrow. temperatures will be jumping. something we like to see. >> we'll see the storms stay to the north. high pressure govens our weather. tomorrow temperatures in the 30's. high pressure settles into the south of us. we get more of a return flow. temperatures will climb into 40's for sunday and stay there monday with all of the storminess staying to the north and that's the way we like it. overnight temperatures will plunge. in the city around 13, possibly a little bit lower. recommend that record is line.
