today is saturday, march 7, goods morning thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer. it is 5:00 o'clock. let's sends it over to carol. we've had an eventful couple of days, carol. >> how over it are all of us? >> i hope we're getting to the end, though? >> how many week sends i stood here and complained and complained off camera about how terrible the weather is, and that sort of thing and there is always a storm coming. this weekend is quiet we're expecting dry wet they are week hardly know what to do with ourselves. 6 degrees, it is cold, up in the poconos right now in broad heads ville. see very cold temperature, 19 through center city philadelphia. we also have snow on the

ground, and just about every single location. we move on and what do we find? well we are going to be dealing with not much today. now, the poconos might find couple of flurries, and you can see they've little activity going on up there right now. otherwise, the rest of us looking for sunshine, maybe couple of clouds out there too, but much better day than we've seen over the last month or so. 14 degrees our temperature in philadelphia yes, it is cold out there, nine in trenton seven wilmington, seven millville. expect to find icy spots driving around, careful of that because we did get melting yesterday. and so, where it was frozen yesterday, might not be frozen today, but it is frozen in a whole new spot. our windchill right now, feels like 5 degrees outside. and in philadelphia and minus nine in allentown cold, cold start to the day. but, we do moderate. our temperatures this afternoon, will be getting some 10 degrees below where we should be this time of the year still above freezing, and that's an improvement for

us 38 degrees our temperature, and we deal with sunshine today. couple of clouds maybe later on this afternoon but still nice looking day. we have a warm upcoming. i can't wait to show that you that's on the seven day forecast, nick snow. >> can't wait to hear it. thank you. >> new this morning investigators are at the scene after deadly crash in hopewell township mercer county. this is the video just back from the scene there. the two cars collided overnight along route 31 in lambertville hopewell road. one person was killed. several other victims were flown to area hospitals we are working to get more details on those victims. officer robert wilson killed in the line of duty this week, and being remembered across our area for those who knew him as friend and neighbor. neighbors cleared his stoop and left a small memorial to a brave officer and friend. >> just a shame. >> i'll just feel sorry for the family, that's all because he got little kids. >> wilson died protecting the people inside the game stop on 22nd and lehigh thursday, engaged in a fears gun battle. >> redefined what a hero is all about. i mean, one he stepped away from the counter, there were civilians there where i counted four behind the counter. he was taking rounds. i was actually being hit during the exchange of gunfire but he continued to fight continued to shoot. >> more than 50 rounds were fired, the fight caught on store surveillance video. officer wilson, a 30 year old father of two was in line buying a gift for his eight year olson just after 4:30, when police say brother 29 year old carlton hips and 24 year old ramon williams, walked in with semiautomatic weapons and announce add robbery. >> the officer was an

out-and-out hero and a warrier. he fought to the very, very end firing at both of them. >> the eight year veteran was shot in the head. his partner engaged the suspect shooting hips in the leg. >> he was one of our very, very best, no question about it and we're all in shock and we're all going to suffer this lost for a very, very long period of time. >> officer wilson's son turns nine on monday. he was at the game stop buying him a video game for doing well in school. both suspect are now charged with murder and attempted murder, one has given a full confession saying they thought the game stop would be quota easy target. in north philadelphia, i'm diana rocco cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now the cbs-3 i-team is digging deep near the story. our natasha brown has disturbing new detail about the criminal history of the suspects charged in the killing of officer wilson. twenty-four year old ramon williams and 29 year old carl

on hips could both face the death penalty. the two brother live together here on the 1200 block of north hollywood street in brewerytown, police executed search warrant of the home and recovered an ak-47. this isn't the first time the two have run into trouble with the law. >> ramon williams has two arrests, carlton hips has six arrests, and he got out of prison in i believe it was 200 the. >> the i-team found williams arrest record includes retail theft, hips record includes multiple convictions he pled guilty to robbery and firearms charges following a 2004 innings dent and was sentenced to ten years behind bars. hips only served the minimum five years before being released on parole in 2009. state probation and parole board documents obtained by the i-team showed hips received a positive recommendation from the department of corrections the board determined he was not a risk to the community and demonstrated motivation for success. >> natasha brown cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

>> we are following breaking news out of montgomery county where fire fight remembers battling two alarm fire. at this hour, it is still not under control. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson liver at the scene on the 800 block of dekalb peak whitpain township. steve, what's the latest there? >> nicole, just arriving on scene here, whitpain, dekalb. show you back to the home there. see the second floor where wire fight remembers focused and that's where the fire broke out when they arrived this morning. flames and smoke on the second floor, the fire spreading through the walls and then shooting through the roof, and because of that, firefighters that were inside at the time had to quickly evacuate and hold a defensive posturing on scene that's where they're at right now trying to get knows flames taken care of on that second floor. the property, unoccupied. nobody in there at the time, because every how quickly this thing spread, firefighters are dealing with some minor injuries, this morning. one firefighter took a burn on

more honest and for the right in their dealings with the public. >> menendez first went to the senate in 2006, were his seat to become vacant, republican governor chris christie would pick a replace: but the senator insists that won't happen. >> and i am not going anywhere. >> chris may cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now menendez is among the highest ranking hispanic members of congress. did he not answer questions during his news conference in newark. well, there is some concern over the job security of 50 fire fighters atlantic city. for the last four years ac has paid for those firefighters through a homeland security grant. well, late friday the firefighters union and city administration pushed through a deal to reply for that grant. but with the level of staffing below what that grant requires. now, earlier mayor don guardian told "eyewitness news" that continuing to use that mechanism doesn't make long-term economic sense. now, he agrees with state recommendations that atlantic city only needs about 180 firefighters, and right now

landing strip. >> oh, dude he is landing on the course. >> cbs news has learned that ford broke his ankle, and possibly his pelvis, when his vintage plane landed hard after it experienced engine failure and clipped a tree. >> spinal surgeon, one of the first to reach him. >> considering what had happened it, wasn't that -- it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. >> federal investigators dismantled and removed the plane friday. it was taken to a hangar for further inspection. >> this aircraft is a fairly simple aircraft. it is a 1942 vintage aircraft. so there is not a lot of computers to it, and everything, so a lot of it is old school mechanical. we'll see what it is. we'll look at everything. >> ford recovering at nearby hospital and has yet to meet with investigators. >> there will be an attempt to talk with the pilot and because we definitely want to know what he no sir. >> a preliminary report could be released in a month. the full investigation will take about a year.

suzanne marquez cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> 5:16, let's sends it over to carol. good morning carol. >> so much after better weekend than what we've become accustomed to over the last, i don't know what, five, six weeks. we have a dry weekend, anticipated for just about everybody. looks fine on the bridge, the one thing do you want to make just pay real close attention to today the melting and the refreezing that we dealt with over night. so a lot of spots have refroze end. just be very, very careful out there. storm scan3, nothing going on in our area. notice the little snow shower that want to work its way in areas well north of us. but, that looks to be the total extent of it, it is cold enough for snow. but let's not. okay? 14 degrees in philadelphia, nine trenton, seven wilmington, seven in millville, ten in the poconos at this point then you bankrupt in the wind it, feels even colder, feels really cold this morning. minus nine is the windchill in

allentown, feels like 5 degrees in philadelphia, just 13 in wildwood. so obviously it is a morning when you're out you'll be in all of your layers, and make sure your pets are inside unless you're out with them, the whole time. we're looking at milder days coming in our direction however, so expect to find these temperatures getting into the upper 30's today we should be in the upper 40's, but you know what, after what we've seen this winter, we'll take the upper 30's. tomorrow we are in the 40's, probably not getting exactly where we're supposed to be, but still getting closer. and then on monday we're also in the 40's. so it looks like we've got nice streak every weather coming up here for us. and i hear absolutely no complaints about that. future weather, maybe few clouds, as we move on through the afternoon, starting to come in here. you notice that there were few snow showers to the north. do they do anything to the poconos. maybe you pick up snow shower. maybe not. and then as we go through tomorrow morning could there and snow shower around the poconos, maybe. otherwise, we've got few clouds building in hereby the time we get to monday.

but these temperatures will be warmer, and that's nice. we've got climbing temperatures on friday, 26 degrees saturday, today we will be in the 30's. and then in the four's, 40's, monday 40's on tuesday. but the 50's are on the way. not just your particular birthday candles but the temperature candles as well. here's our spring countdown. just take a look at this. one day until daylight saving time begins. thirteen days until spring begins. twenty-eight days until the average high temperature is 60 degrees. there is no guarantee we will see that. but, 28 days away. and 30 days until the phillies home opener. that is a spring countdown. we've got temperatures today 38 degrees philadelphia, shore, 38, the poconos 32 degrees, and after this winter, that looks good to us. if you are just visiting here, you would be surprise that that would look as good to us as it does. we've got clocks to change. so make no other plans for tonight. just race around, and change

stream on the fire that's in the walls and the roof, for about an hour now. which means all of that water is trickling down through the structure and hitting the ground, which also means they have to be very careful with the posturing that they've been taking this morning. this fire broke out a few probably, hour and a half ago, this is whitpain, the 800 block of dekalb pike, firefighters get on scene the second floor is engulfed, there are flames, smoke fire, again, spreading through the walls, a and the roof. because of how bad those flames and how quickly they were moving, they were inside at the time, quickly to had to evacuate, take more of defensive posturing, since gone back inside the home, started removing some of the flammable materials, started hitting some of the hot spots. but the flames are still inside, as they continue to battle this fire. good news this morning the property was unoccupied. nobody inside at the time. but again firefighters dealing with the elements, and so there were few injuries to firefighters. they were very minor. but one firefighter suffered

bun to his hand, another one had a slip and fall incident. so again we've been seeing assaulting operation as they've been battling the fire, it is a battle of two front really fire and ice this morning, as they continue to get this under control. it is contained at the moment. but firefighters are taking every precaution as they move forward here. it is the latest from montgomery county, steve patterson, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", back to you nicole. >> steve thank you. new this morning firefighters bat al two alarm fire in new castle county, delaware, "eyewitness news" at the woods edge amounts of tear hill drive in edge more t took several hours for firefighters gain the upper hand there. now, at one point part of the roof collapsed collapsed. nobody was injured several residents are displaced. investigators remain on the scene after fire in south jersey. tearing through this rancher 600 block of hesston road in glassboro, broke out just before 8:30 friday night.

we spoke with a neighbor who called 911. >> lost for words at the moment. it is tragic. i desperately feel for the family. >> now, officials tell us a woman in her 80s and her daughter, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but were not transported to the hospital. the cause of the fire is under investigation. well firefighters rushed to nursing home in montgomery county, chopper three overhead there. this is the again he had square nursing center on sumneytown pike, in lansdale. one wing of the build hadding to be evacuated. residents were relocated to another section of the complex, and at this time, there are no reports of injuries. hooping today, search teams will gather to look for missing teenage fresh newtown square, delaware county. hundreds of volunteers spent the day friday, searching for 13 year old cayman naib, last seen at his harrison drive home wednesday evening. "eyewitness news" spoke to his parents, they say he left the house after a school progress report arrived. it showed he had some failing

"eyewitness news" has has also learned that the f.b.i. is now involved in that search and today his family is asking for volunteers to come to a command center at episcopal academy in newtown square between 10:00 and 3:00 today. let's hope they finds him. the search continues for 52 year old stanley lang. he shot 49 year old andrew chief to death during domestic dispute in montgomery couldn't. happened thursday night inside this home on sunday i brook avenue in chelten hand to up shun. he is 6 feet tall, muscular build, considered armed and dangerous. today marks ooh years since bloody sunday,

hall cbs-3, "eyewitness news". 5:39 right now. a ceremonial swearing in at the pentagon for newly minted defense secretary ashton carter. the philadelphia native took the oath of office administered by supreme court justice elena kagan. now, carter has been on the job since last month after taking over for chuck hagel. he's already gone overseas, including a visit to troops in afghanistan. >> well, we've learned that this cold winter has not put the freeze on hiring. in fact, job growth is now the strongest it's been in more than a decade. the labor department says the us economy added 295,000 new jobs in february. it is the 12th straight month that the economy has gained more than 200,000 jobs. the unemployment rate fell from 5.7% to 5.5 percent. hiring improved in the manufacturing construction, retail, finance and healthcare sectors. but we're also learning the companies aren't always hiring for the long-term.

glen mills. now, we're told somebody was riding this horse and they were not hurt. but crews had to work feverishly to get that animal out of the ditch. now, they eventually succeeded, and that horse pulled itself upright and onto all four's. in burlington, new jersey, a sinkhole brought firefighters out to the 500 block of columbus road, that forced family to evacuate that home. chopper three shows building officials assessing the safety of that house. there is no word on if that family will be displaced. >> well, much of friday was spent digging out from what was hopefully the last storm of this winter season. philadelphia street department deployed more than 220 crews to help clear path through city roadways. now, some parts of the city saw around 8 inches of snow, which really clog up some of the smaller and more narrow streets. logs -- plowing, salting where needed, trying to address every residential street in the city. >> now potholes are another problem, especially along city avenue, but right now crews

are focused on snow removal until the temperature increases. >> we had some sun yesterday carol, but it was still pretty cold. so none that far snow seemed to melt at all. >> a little built did that's the problem this morning nicole. anything that did manage to melt from our snowstorm has refroze end, and there are icy spots out, there so just really be careful on these roads, the ramps and the secondary streets, roads as well. center city philadelphia, looks pretty good as came in here this morning, but still we have pick up eight 9 inches every snow over a lot of the area, and it has not gone away in one day and certainly won't. we head out to ocean sit notice the boardwalk there. very few people, very little foot traffic, and nobody's been down with the plow. we expect mother nature to do some plowing just to get old-man-winter throughout to do it for her. storm scan3 clear around here. what? we don't have any precipitation? well okay. we look to the north.

there is a little something. but that's moving on through. there may be another flu think afternoon, through the poconos, but that's it, we're going to be staying dry here. we're going stay dry this entire weekend. we haven't been able to say that in i don't know how long. 14 degrees, still cold, though, 14 degrees in philadelphia, nine trenton four allentown, ten in the poconos, it is 7 degrees down in millville, seven in wilmington, zero in lancaster and then you factor in the wind, and it is several degrees, at least colder than that. so, just jacket on, pets in, and we will get through this one before we see the warm up. future weather looks pretty, pretty right on target, by this afternoon do we see couple every clouds? start to move into the area. but real now big deal. so just enjoy beautiful looking day with more melting coming. by the time we get to sunday still looks nice around here. and by the time we get to monday, still looks nice around here, tuesday maybe later in the day we pick up the chance of rain shower, but that should be the extent of

it. we do have miler days ahead temperatures will be in the 30's today, which is nothing really to write home about except after winter like we've seen with temperatures as low as they've been. we will be in the upper 30's today, into the middle 40's, both sunday and monday, getting all of my days mixed up with all of these different snowstorms and snow days, and that sort of thing. but monday we're in the 40's, how nice with some sunshine, that should also aid in some of this melting. i'm sure you've noticed the temperatures climbing, by friday well, yesterday was 26 degrees today we will be probably 38, tomorrow around the middle 40's, and then tuesday, could we be getting into the upper 40's? maybe. that does come with at least chance of picking up some rain around here. but we are counting this spring down, and here we go. one day until daylight saving time begins. thirteen days until spring begins. twenty-eight days until the average high temperature at least on paper is 60 degrees. and 30 days until the phillies home opener.

weekend, than last. >> oh, it is. it is. and unlike so many weekends, if we're not having active bad weather, then we have to look out to the next week, and of corpse there will be bad weather. really not seeing that this time. finally, let's take a look, see what we've got going on at the present time. and we find some snow still on the gown, of course, out in reading, and you've got snow on the ground every place. that will was a pretty decent size snowfall. and we're going to be keeping that snow around for little bit. but the melting will commence needly. looking at storm scan3 nothing going on in our area, few little snow showers have worked their way up around interstate 81. that's up through the poconos. but, back that can be expected. the rest of us, we will be staying dry in our area. 12 degrees, right now in philadelphia, out at the airport, eight in trenton 8 degrees in wilmington, it is one, now in allentown 7 degrees in millville what a cold start to the day. minus ten is the windchill in allentown, minus four is the windchill in reading. it is four in philadelphia for
