tournament with unbeaten kentucky advancing and notre dame making its deepest run in more than three decades. >> brand for three. yes. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, march 27th, 2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. french officials say they have no idea why the co-pilot of a german airliner intentionally flew a plane intentionally into a mountainside. they say he was calm and deliberate and dindn't say a word. he pass add security check on january 27th. officials say that there was a several-month gap in his training back in 2009 but wouldn't say why. the crash has prompted some airlines to impose stricter cockpit rules. tina kraus is near the crash

site in seyne-les-alpes. good morning. tina. >> reporter: good morning. there are reports that german police may have found a significant clue at the co-pilot's home that may explain why he purposely crashed the plane into the alps. helicopters are taking off again this morning to try to help find the victims. as search teams resume the difficult task of trying to locate remains in steep terrain investigators are trying to figure out what could have led co-pilot an drea yas lieuub bitz into crashing the plane. they looked after@this after analyzing the cockpit flight recorder. >> when he attempted to come back, that's when the trouble began. >> late thursday german police searched

searched searched lubitz's apartment and from his parents' home. his passion for flying led him to join lufthansa in 2013. he had fulfilled all medical tests. he took a break from his flight training six years ago but didn't explain why. meantime calls are growing for stricter scrutiny of pilots to prevent future tragedies. >> we need to make sure we have a just system a just culture and not a purnive one which might only drive problems underground where they can testify be found. >> reporter: in the wake of the cash europe and canada are requireing two to be in the cockpit at all times. it a german newspaper is reporting this morning that while the co-pilot barricaded himself inside the cockpit, the captain used an axe to try to

break the door down. an axe is part of the safety equipment on board an a320. alison? >> tina kraus. thank you, tina. according to the aviation safety network there have been more than a thousand hijackings by pilots since 1981 including silk air flight in 1997. the 1999 crash of egypt flight off the coast of nantucket was believed to have been flown into the ocean by the co-pilot and the 2013 plane, it's believed the pilot locked the co-pilot out of the cockpit and flew the plane into the ground. they undergo annual medical exams but it's difficult to determine their mental or emotional state. >> you're legally required to disclose those things under penalty or fine or jail if you do so but, of course people can

through. he said i'd rather struggle and strive rather than sit back and lead a comfortable life. in later communications he said jonas also wanted to fight but since he served time in prison would likely not receive a passport. he said quote, we would love do something like the brother in paris did. hasan edmonds purchase add ticket to egypt and planned to fly out of chicago's midway airport on march 25th. that's where he was arrested. jonas was arrested at his aurora, illinois, home. the defendants showed little emotion here at chicago's federal court. if convicted they face a maximum conviction of 15 years in jail around $250,000 in fines. both are expected back in court in two weeks. >> in iraq the u.s.-supported on racing to take saddam hussein's

rose's interview with assad on "cbs this morning" and on sunday's "60 minutes." . italy's highest court is reviewing the guilt of knox and her italian ex-boyfriend. they have twice been convicted in the murder of her british roommate. she's awaiting a decision in hem hoer her home state of washington state. this morning at least 19 people are recovering from injuries after a massive new york city building explosion. four people are in critical condition. the blast was in the heart of manhattan's neighborhood and shot debris 1,500 feet in the air. >> reporter: fire crews spent the night keeping watch over hot spots and during the light of day investigators will get to work trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

fire crews shot powerful streams of water across the new york city street and on the remains of several village brownstones. apparently on friday afternoon a huge fire caused a blast. >> i heard this incredible like sonic explosion. i mean it was like you could feel it. >> reporter: the blast started a fire which spread to other brownstones nearby. residents were seen scrambling down fire escapes. peter menchini rushed home. >> reporter: the investigation is likely to focus on utility work that was being performed inside the building. >> impact appears to have been caused by plumbing and gas work that was occurred inside 121

dozens. a tornado leveled a mobile home park at sand springs. this morning congress is calling on the drug enforcement administration to clean house. the federal watchdog support says the dea botched its handling of allegations, that they went to sex parties with prostitutes while stationed overseas. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: in a new report the inspector general said drug cartels paid deas to have sex parties with prostitutes. the report says although some of the dea ajechblts participating in these parties denied it, information in the case is that they were paid with cartel funds. the prostitution scandal involving secret service agents on an advance trip for the president to cartagena spotlighted misconduct while overseas. >> this report shows that the dea and others they're engaging

here's a look at "today's" forecast in some cities around the country. the sweet 16 teams of the ncaa tournament are now just 12. top ranged and unbeaten kentucky will continue their pursuit of perfection. the wildcats will have no problem when kentucky blows out the mountaineers 78-39. wake up. the echos of 1979. they've done it again. the fighting irish beat wichita state, 81-70. they'll play kentucky tomorrow. the number one seed in the west is also advancing with a seven-point deficit in the second half to beat north carolina, 79-72. and in the elite eight the badgers will take on minnesota.
