"eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live outside the 12th district headquarters in southwest philly where it all happened. matt. >> reporter: natasha

officers tell us it was just after midnight when officer cappy parked his patrol car. it was shortly after that we're told a supervisor smelled alcohol on his breath. it was damage to the police car that first sparked in supervisor's attention. officers say the officer was driving a marked police patrol char had three flat tires and bent rims. the supervisor approached the officer to see what happened and as they smoke noticed the officer had bloodshot eyes and had the smell of alcohol on his breath. kathy said he didn't realize his tires were blown and investigators say he began to assault the supervisor. he was brought under control and charged with driving under the influence simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. he has been suspended for 30 days with intent and to dismiss.

in 2011 he was charged for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend. he was fired from the force but was reinstated in 2013 after going through arbitration. we're live in southwest philadelphia, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> matt thank you very much. the aftermath of a raging fire is causing some travel headaches tonight. septa's manayunk norristown regional rail line is shut down and could be out of commission through the weekend. steve patterson has that story. >> reporter: three alarm 65,000 square feet. saturday the numbers stacked against philadelphia firefighters as they worked to take the out aggressive flames. firefighters arriving on scene at about 2:30 saturday morning to this, fire consuming a vacant metal manufacturing plant. as the battle intensifies the alert jumps from two alarms to

four. >> this fire was a pretty difficult to reach. >> reporter: philadelphia fire commissioner derek sawyer says there were a number of issues in the way of getting the scene contained chief among them a large crumbling structure collapsing on all sides. >> when you have that amount of fire, it's going cause interior collapse at some point. >> reporter: sawyer says his operation startd from a defensive posture both keeping constant water pressure from overhead ton keep the team on the ground safe. >> it's a vacant property. we don't risk life for vacant property. >> reporter: another complication, this, a septa regional rain line running right in the back of the structure cutting up a crucial access point for firefighters. they really had to focus on hammering the top stretch of the beltway building with constant water pressure. meanwhile a fire marshal is investigating the cause. no injuries reported. reporting from north philadelphia, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now, for a look at our

weather today. it may be spring but a winter chill is still very much in the air out there. meteorologist justin drabick is in our weather center with our first look at the forecast. oh, boy, justin, here we go again. >> i think a repeat every weekend. talking about these spring chills. this is today, felt more like early february and some spots to our south in delaware woke up to a coating of snow today and still maybe a stray sprinkle or snow flurry coming in the next couple hours. but it will be a chilly and breezy night across the delaware valley. today's high 41 degrees. that's the average high for early february, february 3rd. not even close to where we should be. 57 is our average high temperature for this time of year for philadelphia. we're currently 38 degrees at the airport, 34 wilmington, at freezing in allentown, 21 in mount pocono, already at freezing or below freezing in the northern suburbs. here are the current wind gusts coming in over 20 miles

per hour, actually gusting to 31 in wilmington so dress warm if you're heading out this evening and tonight. association here's the actual wind chill values, what it feels like on exposed skin. feels like 28 in philadelphia, 5 degrees right now, that's what it feels like in mount pocono, 20 in allentown. still a chilly day on sunday. at least the winds calm down and we'll see full sunshine but again our highs running almost 10 degrees below average, upper 40's for philadelphia, stuck in the 30's in the poconos. we'll talk about how long the spring chill lasts and our next chance of rain in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin thanks so much. a deadly explosion meantime at a berks county manufacturing plant took place. this is video from overnight at the plant on the timet plant. investigators have identified the man who died, a 27-year-old jacob lopez of he have frat today. he's survived by his fiancé.

osha and state police are investigating this accident. police have identified the philadelphia teenager accused of stabbing his own mother to death at 19-year-old zachary pritchett. the attack happened yesterday morning on the 2800 block of reynolds street in bridesburg. police say pritchett also critically injured his grandmother and initially told investigators the stabbings were the result of a home invasion. he now faces a host of charges including murder and aggravated assault. now to the very latest on the deadly plane crash in the french alps. crews are continuing to search that crash site for any remains of victims and the flight data recorder as well. meantime we're also now learning new details about the co-pilot who investigators say intentionally brought down that plane. cbs news correspondent chris van cleve reports. >> reporter: a woman claiming to be a flight attendant and former girlfriend of co-pilot andreas lubitz told a german paper lubitz said he would do something and then everyone

will know my name. investigators believe lubitz intentionally crashed flight 9525 killing himself and all 149 people on board after locking the plane's capitol taken out of the cockpit. german prosecutors say there's evidence he had hid a medical condition and treatment including a shredded doctor's note excusing him from working the day of the crash. media reports say he sought treatment for a problem with his vision. police remain outside lubitz's family home where residents are trying to make sense of the tragedy. [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: this neighbor says he's shocked adding it will take time for people here to process what happened. investigators near germany met with french counterparts saturday to discuss what they discovered including evidence gathered at the family home here. about 200 people from the communities nearest the dead crash gathered for a mass to

honor the victims and show support for the families. [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: she says it's horrible for the families. there are no words. i'm broken. chris van cleve, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> remains of passengers of the malaysia flight 17 disaster was flown from ukraine to the netherlands today. three coffins were ceremoniously placed onto a dutch military cargo plane to be stone amsterdam for further investigation. 298 people were killed in the plane crash. a decorated boston police officer who was honored by the white house after the boost ton marathon bombings is fighting for his life tonight. gang unit officer john moynahan is in a medically induced coma after he was shot during a traffic stop last night. police say moynahan had asked a driver to step out of his vehicle when that driver opened fire. >> as the driver is getting out of the motor vehicle, you can see his right arm come up,

point blank and shoot officer moynahan right below the eye. >> officers returned fire and killed the driver. a woman at the scene was reportedly treated for a flesh wound and was expected to be okay. three other officers were taken to the hospital with stress related issues. also now philadelphia police are investigating a deadly shooting inside a home in frankford. this happened on the 4300 block of elizabeth street around midnight. police say the 24-year-old victim was shot several times in the chest and arms. the man's distraught sister spoke with "eyewitness news" at the crime scene. >> my brother did a lot. he took care of my mother, my sisters. he took care of me. he loved his family. >> reporter: police say they have not yet made an arrest so far. no description of any suspect just yet either. coming up next on "eyewitness news" a hero's welcome. see how a community honored a 91 year old veteran of the battle of iwo jima today in

dozens of veterans and first responders rolled into westmont, camden county and they celebrated the career of 91 year old john lau riello. it was the first time on his island since he landed on it with thousands of other marines in 1945. >> high emotions, low emotions that caused me to well up several time. just couldn't help it. in fact i still do. i'll probably be doing that for the next week or so 'cause it's so many memories there for me. although it's been 70 years it's still just as fresh as though it happened yesterday. >> the group warriors watch riders organized today's big homecoming. and it's also training day for new coaches in the archdiocese of philadelphia catholic youth organization. they participated in play like a champion clinic at the archdiocesan pastoral center.

today coaches learned how to make sports more safe more fun and developmentally enriching. bachelor party crash joey dee july yo' has made to it philadelphia. there he is wearing the saint joseph's shirt at the field house in center city. the seattle man got inviteed to jeff minniti's bachelor party by accident. he was getting e-mails about the party and after finding out about the mixup minniti invited him anyway. the bachelor party crasher raised thousands of dollars online to pay for his big trip to philly. >> all right hard to believe that next week is april already 'cause these temperatures we're dealing with felt more like february. again areas to our south especially northern delaware saw a little coating of snow this morning and temperature-wise not much better this hour. we're in the mid and upper

30's as we check in with our weather watchers, the highs that's the story today unbelievable, we should be in the mid to upper 50's. today struggled to make it into the lower 40's. ocean city james had a high of 43, doug in southampton coming in at 42, john in glasgow only at 41 degrees. similar numbers around middletown delaware, low 40's, delores in newark 43, eagleville lou only had 37 degrees for the afternoon high temperature. tomorrow it gets a bit better and milder air tries to work its way in next week. outside right now we take a live look at center city, still some clouds over the region. there could be a flurry or sprinkle in some spots over the next hour or two but once we lose the sun things should quiet down and things remain partly cloudy tonight. another month with below average temperatures. march so far we're 4 degrees from where we should be for the month. that's pretty impressive and that's been the trend really the past several months and precipitation doing well above

average there, over 2-inches where we should be. highest temperature so far this month 68 degrees, the lowest coming down to 11. i don't know if we'll hit that 68 for the rest of the month. looks like that will be our warmest. maybe a few flurries southeast pennsylvania southward into delaware, new jersey possible. elsewhere just cloudy skies. once it passes it rushes in colder air tonight and already temperatures taking a dive at freezing allentown and reading 38 in philadelphia, 29 in pittsburgh, 27 in cleveland so that cold air will move into our region overnight so we're talking about low temperatures down well into the 20's for the entire delaware valley. sustained winds out of the northwest 20 miles per hour in philadelphia that's not factoring in the gusts so that's bringing the wind chill values down into the teens and 20's this evening. good news is for tomorrow if you don't like the wind it does lighten up. they'll be out of the northwest those winds still a cool wind but still around 10 miles per hour so a little bit better there. notice the

arrows, they change directions for monday. now they're pointing to the north and east. that means a southwesterly wind. that's a milder wind so that tries to bring in some warmer air for the start of next week. tomorrow still on the chilly side, mostly sunny though so that late march sun is pretty strong. it will feel good upper 40's for the highs. monday looks like we make it into the upper 50's. there will be more clouds as a cold front approaches. there could be a stray rain shower in some spots. another disturbance tuesday maybe a couple showers in the afternoon with temperatures in the 50's. so let's time everything out for you. lots of sunshine tomorrow, so not a bad day to be outside just a little cool for this time of year. here come more clouds for monday, maybe a scattered shower or two, same deal on tuesday, it's not an all day washout no, big deal there. temperatures slowly climbing back to the 50's. cold start tomorrow, historic look at that. mid to upper 20's for those morning temperatures, this is 7:00 a.m. sunday. into the afternoon we go, we get into the mid 40's, maybe some upper 40's if we see those mostly sunny skies. monday looking much better a lot of 50's showing up to the

delaware valley. that's where we should be for this time of year so we'll take it. overnight partly cloudy, breezy cold, center city 26 for the low temperature. you know it's colder in the suburbs. overall cool day on sunday, lots of sun though, 48 degrees for the afternoon high. monday up to 58 degrees. could be a stray shower. i think a better chance for an afternoon shower on tuesday. little bit cooler at 52. we'll go mostly sunny wednesday, mid-50's. thursday that's probably the best day out of the next seven. lots of sunshine. looks like we'll crack the 60's and then some showers move in for friday and looks like saturday still some shurs around especially in the morning with highs in the 50's. >> oh, my goodness. >> a little warmup coming up. we got to get through tomorrow. >> we're looking for the 62. >> yes, that would be good. >> i wish it would stay there. thank you justin. let's check in with lesley. flyers action. >> that's right flyers began the afternoon nine points out of the playoff with seven games left so barring a minor miracle probably not going to the post season but we are paying very close attention to jake voracek who is battling to finish the season as the

nhl points leader. the sharks in town today the first period flyers down one moving the buck. voracek to grossman raffl to put the rebound that. that's good enough to earn the fifth for voracek. third period powers on the power play michael del zotto to claude giroux. another assist from that play and flyers come back to tie the game at two. this one's going to go into a shootout. we know that's the big problem for the flyers. converted one chance and lost this game three to two but voracek keeping pace with sidney crosby in the race for the trophy. >> i think jake's -- jake's a very competitive guy and his priority to win hockey games first and foremost. and he has to produce for us and he has all year. i mean, he's going to continue to try to do that. >> to march madness we're down to the final eight teams of the tournament.

the first elite eight game just got under a way a short time ago. arizona take on wisconsin in the west regional. right now the badgers are down wildcats leading 14 to three. coming up tonight we have unbeaten kentucky looking to improve to 38 wins and zero losses. they'll square off with notre dame's fighting irish. tipoff 8:49. last night we had duke taking on utah in the sweet 16 a great game from justice winslow three ball from the corner put devils up by eight. in the second half he's driving for the hoop and the harm. winslow had 21 points 10 rebounds. devils win 63 to 57. great game between oklahoma and michigan state. spartans hit their free throws down the stretch and the sooners just basically ran out of time. 24 points for travis as michigan state wins 62 to 58. gonzaga taking on ucla. watch this great play on the low post behind the back pass

from gonzaga seven footer. bulldogs win 74 to 62. they get duke next. tight game until about four minutes left. louisville's anton gill hitting a tough bucket in the paint. cardinals pull away for a 10-point win. last night the sixers paid tribute to herb magee legendary philadelphia university basketball coach who reached that 1,000 career win mark. he shared a nice moment with brett brown. sixers lost to the clippers. nerlens noel great night. looking for another rookie of the year in philadelphia. we need something. we'll take it. >> thank you very much
