♪ from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now on "eyewitness news" a small plane crashes shortly after take off from a chester county airport and tonight two people are dead. investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. good evening everyone i'm gnat brown. thanks so much for joining us tonight. we are hearing from eyewitnesses who heard the crash. also, saw the aftermath. the pilot and one passenger left the brandywine airport in west chester this afternoon. and shortly after take off the plane went down behind senior living complex in west goshen. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers has the story from chester county. >> reporter: the plane took off from brandywine airport shortly after 1:30 sunday

afternoon. and the trouble for the small piper pa28 aircraft started almost immediately. >> shorely after taking off the plane started to sputter and then basically took a nose dive and came in down in the woods behind us. >> reporter: the plane shattered on impact. its debris scattered a mid several piles of stone on peeves property near route 202 in west goshen. the plane's pilot and passenger died on impact. as a fire broke out at the scene. >> saw, you know, flames about 20 feet up in the air and it must be chemicals. >> reporter: firefighters quickly put out the fire and investigators began their grizzly task of peacing together what happened. and why. coroner's van took the two bodies out of the crash site as neighbors looked on. >> some pilots fly out of here it's sad to hear people didn't make it. >> reporter: main came not far from a senior living apartment complex and several houses but did not hit any buildings. the unclear if the pilot steered for the clearing clearing on purpose but

phil p.m..com. torments night we're learning more about the off duty police officer shot and killed in glenn olden. a delaware county official tells "eyewitness news" the victim is 26-year-old mark hudson. the darby borough officer was off duty on saturday when he was shot in the chest inside a glenn olden home. he died of his injuries at penn presbyterian medical sent. hudson was also a firefighter in yeadon. the fire company's chief spoke with "eyewitness news" about hudson. >> friendly with everybody. and that's what starter his career. you know he knew from being in the firehouse he wanted to help people. we deal a with will lot of bad thing in the fire service but this is really close to home. >> reporter: there was a woman in the home at the time of the shooting she has not yet been identified. police say the plan to file charges in this case will come very soon. developing at this hour, officials say a powerful earthquake hit the south pacific nation of poppa new guinea. the 7.7 quick triggered a

tsunami warning for papua. it caused strong shaking on land but no word of any injuries or damage at this point. after a chilly weekend we're finally going to feel more spring like temperatures on the way. the question will it stay dry and will these temperatures last last? meteorologist justin drabick joins us now with a the first forecast. hey, justin. >> this time of year you get a little of everything. we'll talk about spring like numbers in the temperatures but also some spring showers. now today was cool. we had full sunshine but we even get to near average. 45 was our high temperature today. that's good 12 degrees below average for this time of year. little bit chilly now. low 30s in the cold spots but clouds streaming in from the west. so that should level off temperatures a little bit nonetheless chilly for this time of year. freezing in mt. holly. 39 in northeast and 35 in pottstown. southerly winds under 10 miles per hour are trying to bring in milder air that will return for

the upcoming work week. but still it is bringing those wind chill values down into the 20s. certainly not as brutal as it was last night with the windy conditions but it feels chilly dress warm on exposed skin it will feel like the 20s through the overnight hours. storm scan3 shows the clouds streaming in from the west. you see showers out across western pennsylvania a weak cold front that will track eastward over the neck six to 12 hours some of the showers could get into the region overnight maybe even mix with a few wet snowflakes north of the city. so when you wake up tomorrow morning you'll have to some clouds around little bit dreary but should see sun for the afternoon that boosts our temperatures up to near average 58 degrees. now we're talking typical late march numbers. breezy at the shore maybe a morning shower 55. and am rain or shower possible up in the poconos tomorrow morning temperatures there make it into the mid 40s the in the full for confident we'll talk about milder temps even temperatures well above 60 degrees later this week and rain chances all in the seven day forecast coming up in a few minutes. natasha. >> thank you justin.

download the cbs philly weather app to your smart phone or your tablet. you can track live radar also much more it's free it's available on i tunes and google play. now, crews have discovered two bodies buried in the rubble of the building explosion that rockman man's east village earlier this week. the bodies were found this afternoon. officials believe they are nicholas figueroa and lukocon. figure lea was eating at the restaurant that was leveled by the blast on thursday. the other man was working there. vest gathers are looking at a gas leak as possible cause of this explosion. workers inside the building made a critical safety error officials say. >> if you're smelling gas you call 911 much that's what you should do. that's what we have to do much that's what they didn't do here. when they smelled the gas restaurant owner call the owner of the building which was a major mistake. >> officials say the families of the two missing men have been

notified and they are no longer actively looking for anyone trapped inside. investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire at a popular bakery in north philly philly. firefighters battled the flames at denise's delicacies near 22nd and cambria streets for an hour before gaining an upper hasn't. there were apartments on all sides of the business. but no vac weighings or injuries were reported. and the search it does continue tonight for a suspect in a hunting park home inn vague. police say the suspect broke into a home on the 700 block of west erie avenue early this morning. and stabbed 25-year-old homeowner. the victim is in stable condition at temple university hospital tonight. there's no word on what, if anything, was taken from the home. and a pennsylvania state trooper winded in a deadly ambush last fall says that he wants to some day return to the force. trooper alex douglas was shot september 12th 2014 outside

the blooming grove barrack. corporal brian dixon was killed. douglas made his first public remarks on saturday as the borough of dunbar named a road after dixon. police arrested eric frein after a 48 day manhunt in the pocono mountain. he has pleaded not guilty. prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty. >> christians around the area celebrated palm sunday. ♪ >> archbishop shall chaput celebrated mass at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul tonight. palm sunday commemorates jesus' entry into the jerusalem and it marks the beginning of holy week which leads up to easter sunday. now three months after an emergency amputation trenton bishop david o'connell returned to the altar for a very special palm sunday mass. ♪ >> heartfelt welcome and rousing applause for bishop david o'connell as he made his way

down the aisle at saint mary the assumption cathedral. first mass on this palm sunday since a leg amputation in december. >> live threatening infections seemed to settle in the leg and so i had to make a decision at christmastime to amputate the leg and so it was amputateed actual three months ago today and it's been a miraculous speedy recovery, and rehabilitation. >> two months after his amputation bishop o'connell spoke to "eyewitness news" about the live changing procedure he underwent. for years the 59-year-old bishop of trenton struggled with diabetes. a team of therapists helped with the process of rehabilitation. >> you're a little shaky. you know it's a little bit wobbly. so i just wanted to make sure i didn't fall or do anything like that. >> reporter: bishop o'connell delivered the mass ushering in the holy week for christians and catholics. walking again. standing steadfast in his faith. >> back into the swing. i'm happy to be. god is good.

more than two dozen people recovering cap in a today after a maybe skidded off a runway. the accident happened early this

morning at halifax airport in nova coccia. officials say the air canada jet touched down short of the runway hit a power line and caused a power outage at the airport. passengers described the terrifying moments. >> all of a sudden it was a big bang and then the next thing we're sliding down the runway and i look outside the window and i can see sparks coming from my side. >> the engine came out. so the engine was about a couple hundred feet away from the plane. >> 25 people were hospitalized. their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. heavy snow was reported at the time of the landing. a german community is mourning the loss of 16 students and two teacher kill in the germanwings plane crash in the french alps. as cbs correspondent chris van cleve shows us investigators are still trying to figure out why the co-pilot up tension alley downed the aircraft. >> reporter: cold rain and

biting wind a grim back drop to the sadness hanging over germany this palm sunday. 16 students and two teachers from the town of about 30,000 died tuesday when german wing flight 9525 crashed into the french alps. outside their school a sea of red and white condolences. hundreds of candles flowers and messages surround pictures showing the smiling faces of young lives lost too soon. people keep coming here to the school to reflect on the lives this community has lost. mourning in silence. one woman lit a candle and then asked outloud why? this is new video of a teenaged andreas lube bits flying a guide when he was 17. investigators believe the co-pilot intentionally crashed the air bus 8320 killing himself and 149 others tuesday. his motive remains unknown. german tabloids plame the captain could be heard trying to break down the locked cockpit door shouting open the dam door!

and not a good way to start a brand new season in new york's coney oy land. cyclone roller coaster coaster got stuck on the first one. it was 10 feet from its highest point when it just stopped. to dozen riders were stranded for about 15 minutes. workers then helped them down along a walkway that runs adjacent to the tracks. luckily no one was injured and the park is working now to figure out exactly what happened happened. and caught on camera fire crews in burlington county act quick toll rescue a dog in distress. the goodwill fire dement in pemberton provided us this video of the rescue. the dog was spotted holding on branch in a creek. fire crews pull the pup to safety seemingly unharmed. but the dog is in the care of animal control for evaluation at this point. it was certainly the sprint that took the nation by storm. two llamas on the lamb in arizona back in february. and yesterday they made their final public appearance. the owner of the llamas says
