coach mike krzyzewski his fifth national championship. >> for the national champions of 2015. >> this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, april 7th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. duke fans are celebrating their fifth national title this morning. students on the north carolina campus lit a bonfire after the blue devils held on to beat wisconsin for the ncaa championship. >> go duke! whoo! >> it's a fantastic moment. living the dream. let's go, duke. let's go, duke. >> it is the fifth title for duke coach mike krzyzewski putting him second all time behind the legendary john wooden. coach k.'s team won despite losing its star player to foul trouble. and as adrianna diaz reports,

the lead changed 15 times in the hard-fought game. >> reporter: duke is college basketball's best. the blue devils beat fellow number one seed wisconsin to win the ncaa title. the game was billed as a clash of the titans as the blue devils' star freshman okafor squared off against frank kaminsky. both teams came out to play and play hard. the lead changed 13 times in the fast-paced first half alone. duke and wisconsin played each other just four months ago. duke won that contest, but both teams have changed quite a lot since then. in the second half, duke stumbled early. wisconsin held the blue devils scoreless for almost four minutes and ran up a nine-point lead. duke's largest deficit of the tournament. >> when we got nine points down we were in foul trouble, and a little bit disjointed. >> reporter: but duke rallied behind freshman guard jones who

led the team with 21 points. duke eventually took the lead with 5:30 and they still had it when time ran out. >> we were fabulous down the stretch. i mean i don't know how you can be any better than we were down the stretch. >> reporter: it's the fifth national title for coach mike krzyzewski. adriana diaz, cbs news, indianapolis. the nation's heartland is in for dangerous severe weather for the next several days. the worst so far this year. thunderstorms are expected to break out today from oklahoma to missouri. the system packing possible tornadoes, is forecast wednesday from the southern plains into illinois and iowa. and this morning, jury deliberations are set to begin in the boston marathon bombing trial. during closing arguments monday defense lawyers again admitted dzhokhar tsarnaev's guilt, saying he planted one of the bombs. but they argue his older brother was the mastermind. don champion is in boston with a look at their legal strategy.

don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. in the end jurors have to decide which picture of tsarnaev they believe the most. was he the extremist who not only read militant propaganda online but also embraced it like prosecutors claimed? or was he the teen who was pushed to the extreme by an older brother like defense attorneys claim? this morning a jury of 12 men and women are set to begin deliberations in the case against accused boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. they'll begin considering his guilt or innocence on the 30 counts against him, 17 of those charges could cost tsarnaev his life. >> if they find him guilty on one of those 17 death penalty eligible counts then the trial would move to a penalty phase, and they would have to vote on whether or not he should get the death penalty. >> reporter: during closing arguments monday jurors were once again shown graphic video of the aftermath of the 2013 bombings. prosecutors called tsarnaev a

cold calculated terrorist who set down a pressure cooker bomb in a crowd of spectators. the prosecutor said he can't help but seeing a row of children along the barricade including 8-year-old martin richard whose entire body was shattered, eviscerated. tsarnaev's defense attorney judy clark, admitted he carried out the bombing but insisted had it not been for his older brother, tamerlan none of it would have happened. >> in order to drive that point home she often refers to him as the kid or the teen as opposed to my client or the defendant. >> reporter: the defense argued tamerlan who was killed by police on the run built the bombs, murdered an m.i.t. police officer, and led the way that tragic day and left dzhokhar to stand trial alone. now, some legal observers expect the jury to deliberate for at least a day. the punishment phase when jurors will decide whether or not to spare tsarnaev's life could take several days or even weeks. anne-marie? >> don champion in boston thank you, don. jurors will hear closing

arguments this morning in the murder trial of former new england patriots star aaron hernandez. the defense rested monday after calling only three witnesses. hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the 2013 killing of odin lloyd. and relatives of a maryland family who died from carbon monoxide poisoning are looking for answers this morning. the bodies of a father and his seven children were found monday at their home in princess anne. friends and family had been worried for days. relatives say the power company had cut off the electricity over an unpaid bill. and the family was using a generator. scott broom of our washington, d.c. affiliate wusa reports. >> reporter: a grandmother's unspeakable grief. her son, rodney todd sr., and his seven children five girls and two boys seen in this family photo are all gone. >> he just wanted to do

everything that was right. and he was setting a good example for his children. and he did just that. >> reporter: rodney todd sr. had not been seen since more than a week ago. march 28th. school officials had been here twice to knock, looking for the kids, five of whom went to the same elementary school. finally, todd's coworkers and family begged police for help. >> we were going to file a missing report. >> reporter: the stepfather was here at 1:00 when police came. >> the detective said hold it right there. you can't come in. this is a crime scene. >> they also found a generator. >> reporter: principal sense anne's police chief is scott keller. >> that generator was often out of gas. the power was off in the house. and they were in different rooms. in beds ss in sleeping positions. >> he was such a good dad. when they told me he wasn't going to work, i knew something was wrong. and the kids wasn't going to

school. i knew something was wrong. it just hurts. it hurts. it hurts me. >> that is scott broom of our washington affiliate wusa reporting. the seven children ranged in age from 6 to 15. now, the republican race for the white house will be heating up this morning. kentucky senator rand paul is expected to announce his bid for the nomination at a rally in louisville. the tea party favorite is in his first senate term. another senator, ted cruz of texas, is the only other declared candidate. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie good morning. yeah, today in kentucky on his home turf rand paul will make it official he is going after the gop presidential nomination. now, he is throwing his hat into what's expected to be a very crowded ring. but by announcing now, similar to ted cruz who announced just a couple of weeks ago, he could grab himself some early attention. >> it's time for a new way. a gnaw set of ideas.

a new leader. one you can trust. >> reporter: a new campaign video gives an early glimpse into senator rand paul's announcement later today. the kentucky republican will officially announce his candidacy for the 2016 republican nomination at a rally in louisville this morning. paul will be the second candidate to throw a hat into the ring. >> no hard questions. >> reporter: paul has a tall order ahead, hoping to attract younger and more diverse republican voters while appealing to the conservative base he attracted during events like his 13-hour filibuster in 2013. paul's campaign will try to portray him as a different republican candidate but with possibly a dozen others vying for the nomination it could be tough to stand out. >> i believe in the power of millions of courageous conservatives rising up to re-ignite the promise of america. >> reporter: senator ted cruz kicked off his campaign last month. still to come, possible announcements by former florida

governor jeb bush wisconsin governor scott walker new jersey governor chris christie and florida senator marco rubio. experts say it's too early to assess paul's prospects. >> over the coming months i think it will become clear whether he can build a coalition big enough to win in iowa, new hampshire, south carolina. >> reporter: after today's announcement, paul is expected to head to new hampshire, south carolina, iowa, and nevada. and he's expected to reach south carolina on thursday where foreign policy is supposed to be the big issue that he focuses on. and he is expected to talk about his platform pushing for a dramatic increase in defense spending some $190 billion over the next two years. anne-marie, that's a big turnaround if that happens from 2011 when his budget called for a cut in defense spending. >> susan mcginnis in washington thank you. coming up on the "morning news," the high cost of false positive mammograms. plus "rolling stone" faces legal action after its now

>> it's one of the loudest failures in journalism that i can remember in part because of the age we live in. that story attracted an enormous amount of attention. >> now, the magazine has apologized but says no one will be fired. president obama is making the case for a framework for a nuclear deal with iran. this as congress weighs in on the agreement. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: the white house put energy secretary earnest moniz front and center monday to defend the nuclear deal being negotiated with iran. >> this is not built upon trust. this is built upon hard-nosed requirements. >> reporter: moniz says despite reported differences coming from tehran, the u.s. and iran are on the same page with the framework agreement. and president obama pushed back against critics during a "new york times" interview. >> this is our best bet by far to make sure iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: but lawmakers including republican senator lindsey graham say the president could have done better. >> this is the best deal you could get.

the average cost for that is about $60,000. the company plans to spend up to $250 million to help at least 25,000 employees graduate by 2025. here on wall street today, surging energy prices could drive stocks higher again. the dow gained 117 points on monday. the s&p rose 13. the nasdaq was up 30. starting friday the "star wars" movies will be available on the internet. so for the first time, all six movies can be downloaded legally. they'll be on sale on various places including itunes, amazon and vudu. they will not be available for rent through video on demand. but they'll also include bonus material on model, costumes weapons and other behind-the-scenes details. and ryanair, the low-cost european airline is banning alcohol on one of its flights. the airline will no longer allow passengers to carry alcohol onto
