road. inside, a man's body. tonight police are searching for clues in this mysterious death. what happened in that car? that's the question police will try and answer. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. investigators have recovered what could be a key piece of evidence. "eyewitness news" reporter natasha brown is live at the seen in southwest philadelphia with new information tonight. natasha? >> reporter: well, this 91 weren't call apparently came in from it pretty quickly after someone spotted the flames. a car fire at 3:30 this afternoon here along this road that's now turned into a suspicious death investigation. a grizzly discovery uncovered inside this burning car in the 4700 block of port mifflin road. firefighters responding to the car fire find much more in the midst of the names. >> as they extinguished the fire in the front driver's seat of the car is what -- is a believed to be a male body charred all the way down to the bone. >> reporter: police say there

were no witnesses along this somewhat desolate stretch of runway that runs particle level to philadelphia international airport runway. the closest commercial businesses are at least a mile and a half away. >> a little bit shocked to find someone was found dead in a burning car. it's kind of scary i guess. >> reporter: tag is still visible on the barely recognizable honda accord coupe. investigators had rule the death suspicious have found a key piece of evidence. >> fire marshal has found a gas can in the trunk of the car so he believes that's the accelerant that was used for this particular fire. >> reporter: well we can physical you at this hour investigators are still working to identify this victim and establish an exact cause of death. the car meantime is registered to someone in south philadelphia. but right now police are not sure if it belongs to this victim. we're live here in southwest philly tonight natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a lot of questions to be answered natasha, thank you very much. we have a lot of new information tonight on this bizarre scene in the nation's

capitol today. we have uncovered a lot of information about that small gyro copter that landed ortolan of the capitol and about the pilot who actually took off from pennsylvania. wanting to make political statement. at 1:20 wednesday aft with the white house in the for ground cbs new camera capture the gyro copter flying over the national mall. behind the washington monument and toward the capitol. >> this is not good, people. >> two minutes later tourists captured the chopper as it came in for a landing on the west lawn. at the controls 61-year-old doug hughes. tampa area political activist and postal worker who wanted to stage a stunt and cliff letters to mail demanding campaign finance reform. in i'm going to land on the capitol mall in front of the capitol building. i'm going to have 535 letters strapped to the landing landing gear. >> his request had been chronicled by the tampa bay times for several months but only publish the story on wednesday. >> i had carefully planned it so

that nobody will get hurt. i'm not suicidal. i'm not going to commit suicide and i'm not going to fly into any monuments. isn't on april 10th hughes left in order after loading his gyro copter on to trailer he told police that he drove to pennsylvania and left from air airfield around gettysburg wednesday morning. he headed toward washington at a low altitude and flew right into the restricted flight zones around the capitol. the faa said in a statement the pilot was not in contact faa air traffic controllers and the faa did not authorize him to enter restricted air space. but he made it to the capitol and once he was on the ground, police surrounded the gyro copter. took hughes into custody and deployed a bomb squad robot to make sure there were no explosives on board. friend of hughes does say the secret service knew he had something planned and that agent has actually interviewed him about a year ago. the tampa bay times only told the secret service of that specific plan today after hughes

had taken off. big security challenges are ahead for the city of philadelphia as we ready tour a papal visit and the democratic national convention. tonight police staged a drill on independence mall to test their redness. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco takes us inside what happened. >> reporter: police move into the independence visitors center on independence mall for a gunman on the loose but this is just a drill. active shooter drill. philadelphia police are working with parks and fire departments simulateing a shooter in the building. >> certainly we never hope to have an emergency here at the visitors center but it's always a possibility. >> reporter: more than 100 police officers are training with fake bullets trying to find and immobilize the shooter hidden somewhere inside. >> officers from the nearby district here in the sixth district along with the park rangers who patrol this area are responding simultaneously integrated into contact teams and together they're moving into

the building just like they would in a real situation. they're moving to the sound of the gunshots. report roar the fire department habits as medics transported the wounded out of the building. necessary coordination with the big events on the calendar later this year. the pope is expected to bring more than a million people to the parkway in september. and the democratic national convention police say they need to be prepared should the worst happen. >> steve philadelphia will be in the world spotlight. and that's why it's important that our training and our capabilities and our equipment also be on the cutting edge. >> reporter: the philadelphia police department says other departments around the country are now emulating their training and using philadelphia as a model. homeland security was also here in preparation for the events ahead. at sixth and market, diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". heads up to drivers out there planning to hit the road in philadelphia early tomorrow. there will be road closures on interstate 676 starting in just

about an hour. the vine street stress way will be shut down in both directions between broad street and i-76 and that road work will be taking mace from midnight to 95am weather permitting. be sure to get the latest traffic conditions right when you wake up with "eyewitness news" starting this morning at 4:30. well tonight we're hearing the links a mother went to try and save her child from a hit-and-run driver. police are still looking for the white acura that hit 19-year-old josephine rivera and her two-year-old son david in kensington on monday. rivera is out of the hospital but her son remains in critical condition. eyewitnesses say rivera tried to grab her toddler from the path of the car on mascher street. >> you have the mother and the child injured and the mother iteming to protect the child. it's just heartbreaking. >> there was another hit-and-run on monday in southwest philadelphia. a four-year-old boy was hit and killed. police have recovered the suv

involved in that incident, and tonight investigators are still waiting for that driver to turn themselves in. a $7 million settlement is reached in the beating death of a 23-year-old man in philadelphia's old city. kevin kless was beaten to death by three drunk men near fourth and market in january of 2012. two nightclubs agreed to pay $7 million to his family to settle a wrongful death lawsuits those nightclubs allegedly served the three men that beat kless past the point of inn tock indication two of those men were underage. all three are now in prison. tonight kless' family sent "eyewitness news" a statement and it reads in part "our son would be alive today if those bars, their managers and their employees had just followed the law. we hope that this lawsuit will spur the industry to follow the laws and spare any other family from suffering the devastating preventiblepreventible loss we have endure ". >> the former football star

aaron hernandez is headed to prison. today a jury in massachusetts delivered its verdict in his murder trial. >> guilty guilt of murder in the first degree. >> the convict of the former new england pate tree yacht in the death of odol lloyd left his mother and fiance' in tears in the courtroom. his mother also wept. hernandez will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his friend found shot to death in june of 2013 about a mile from the football player's home. >> that was my son. >> we'll all remember it for the rest our lives. it will definitely be a part of us. >> it's not over for hernandez. he still faces murder charges in a double shooting in boston that happened about a year before lloyd was killed. well attempt to derail philadelphia's paid sick leave law has some workers in the city concerned tonight and they have taken to the streets. the power struggle between the city and the state overpaid sick

leave at the heart of the protest in center city philadelphia today. many people that we talked with were upset to learn that state lawmakers are trying to overturn the paid sick leave law that is set to be into effect next month month. >> this is a huge step. to deck at any time to private sector business what is they can do with their own employees. >> my son sick i think month better care for my son than his mother's care. i feel like i should be able to miss a day of work and get paid for it. >> philadelphia's paid sick leave law would require companies with 10 or more employees to provide an hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours that an employee works. alert for dog owners tonight. concern is growing among vets over rare illness that's spreading quickly we've got the details on that next. kathy. >> a little rain must fall before a weekend surprise. i'll have that culling up with the seven day. >> and a big grand opening draws big crowds and nascar drivers. but will it bring some big money

>> the tax deadline is less than an hour from now and some of us race to file our returns by midnight pressure is building on the irs to stop a growing tax scam. con artists posing as irs agents have called more than 400,000 people accusing the victims of tax fraud demanding immediate payment for back taxes and threatening them with jail time. so far those scammers have netted $15.5 million from 3,000 victims. >> i was the perfect victim. my only reward for being public with my shame is to communicate to as many people as possible. >> it's ease city fall for this. >> tom victims around the country you shall not be ashamed of what happened to you. all of us have a natural fear of

irs. >> keep this in mind. the irs never makes these types of phone calls. they say officials say the best way to avoid getting scammed is to simi hang up the phone. a warning to pet owners tonight bout canine new that's killed six dogs and sicken at least a thousand more in the midwest. vets are cautioning pet owners to keep their dogs from going nose to nose with other pets to stop it from spreading further. the h3n2 strain is believed to have come from asia. there is no spic vaccine for it but some vets think it's effects must be lessened by the regular seasonal flu vaccine. >> our dog population here what we call naive. they've never seen anything like this before. so their immune system some primed and ready to fight it. we were finding that the numbers of dogs was far more than we normally see in the seventy three rest the disease was much worse. >> right now there are cases in illinois wisconsin indiana and georgia.

the first signs are a persist 10 cough and lethargy. new research suggests snoring isn't just annoying, it could actually affect your memory and thinking ability. researchers studied nearly 2500 people between ages of 55 and 90 and here's what they found. those with breathing problems like snoring and sleep apnea were diagnosed with mild cognitive impair many about 10 years earlier than people who did not have sleep related breathing problems. experts think snore cog actually speed up a mental decline that's already happening. >> maybe accelerateing cognitive. we don't think it's specific for alzheimer's but we think that it's an insult to the brain that might be accelerateing neurology degeneration. >> war the signs of sleep apnea. >> loud and frequent snoring. choking or gasping during sleep or feeling tired during the daytime all of those are possible signs. sleep problems are very common among older people. they affectly nearly 53% of men

and 26% of women. there's lot of scheme down the shore to today with the big unveiling of what atlantic city hopes will be a key to its future. >> bass pro shops opened its first store in new jersey tonight and "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan shows us officials hope it can help real in an economic boost for ac. >> reporter: how about that for making an introduction to atlantic city? nascar legend tony stewart among the many celebrities at bass pro shops grand opening. the 85,000 square foot facility more than a store. it's an attraction separate from gambling. >> this is going to be one of greatest april vests bass pro shops ever made and we are looking forward to continuing to work with them and all of you to keep atlantic city the great place it's always been. >> with nature scenes depicting new jersey wildlife habitats, and locally native fish in the 10,000-gallon aquarium, the building is visually stunning stunning. >> atlantic city is already great destination.
