gisele bundchen makes her final trip down the runway, retiring from modding after a 20-year career captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday april 16th 2013. doug didn't intend to fly above the most restricted space in the world but even though he flew his plans on the internet he flew opt the lawn of the west u.s. capitol. he took off from his small helicopter about 80 miles from capitol hill yesterday. he approached the capitol hill from the west flying right over the national mall. hughes says he was trying to draw attention to campaign finance corruption. this morning authorities are trying to figure out how he got so far without being stopped. edward lawrence is in washington. good morning, edward. >> good morning, anne-marie.

on the entire 80-mile trip no radar picked up the gyro helicopter. the u.s. military is looking into why this morning. police surrounded and arrested douglas mark hughes shortly after he land his gyrocopter on the capitol lawn wednesday. the 61-year-old mailman is expected to make his first appearance in court today. the question is how was he able to get into some of the most restricted airspace without being seen. witnesses say they saw him take off. >> crazy. >> man. >> that guy had to be nuts to do something like that. >> reporter: hughes was able to fly past the white house and the washington monument before landing on capitol hill. even if they spotted hughes, they would not have been able to take him down before he landed. >> i don't think there would have been anything warranted. to take him out of the sky would have created more problems than it would have been solved.

>> reporter: he's been planning his flight for two years. he was interviewed about his plans in 2013. hughes talked about it with friends. he even made this video for "the tampa bay times." >> i'm going to violate the no-fly zone nonviolently for nobody to get hurt and i'm going to land on the capitol mall. >> he was delivering 530 letters to congress urging them to take um finance campaign reform. many have not received the letters yet. all of those letters had the proper postage. anne-marie? >> edward lawrence in washington. thank you, edward. this morning there are red flag warnings. meaning critical fires exist. the fire in rialto broke out last night. firefighters battled heavy winds tries to get the fire under control. there are a number of buildings in the area but so far no damage has been reported.

jo and there has been another deadly shooting of an unarmed man by police officers this team in houston. it happened following a high-speed chase. the officers believed the suspect was reaching for a weapon, but no gun was found. tim wetzel of our houston station khou says the chase began when the police tried to pull the driver over. >> it went on for miles. the driver weaved in and out of traffic. when the police put up chopsticks he went around them. he slammed into a woman's car. then seconds later, he crashed into an suv. from air 11 it looked like the driver was about to get up. then police say he went back in to reach for something and that's when two officers opened fire. >> fearing for their lives that this suspect was reaching for a weapon, two officers did discharge their weapon at the vehicle, striking the suspect and killing him.

>> friends and family identify the driver at 41-year-old trey sheppard. >> it hurts. he was a good person who did not deserve to be out here. >> she is his cousin. she watched the chase on live tv. >> this is something that happened to a good person. he's a hard worker, has four children. >> he said he had a child in the car and threatened to hurt the cops if they kept following. there was no child. they believed that afraid to shoot. >> hoping the police would work with him to back off so he could have a peaceful surrender to save his life. >> that was khouess reporting. two schools where the chase ended were locked down for about 30 minutes. a michigan officer who was seen in a video beating a suspect after he was pulled over

in suburban detroit has been fired. dash cam video from the inkster police captured the incident in january. floyd dentman, the suspect is black, the two police officers are white. dentman was thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched. police say he resisted arift and had cocaine in his car. they say police planted the coke. the jurors who cover victoried former new england patriots' football star guilty. he immediately began serving a life sentence with no chance of parole. he's locked up in a maximum security prison just miles from gillette stadium where he starred on the field. anna werner reports. >> guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: aaron hernandez's mother and fiancee hugged each other and subbed.

jurors took seven days to find hernandez guilty of murdering his friend odin lloyd in 2013. lloyd's body was found in an industrial park less than a mile from hernandez's home. he had been shot six times. bristol county attorney thomas quinn. >> aaron hernandez may have been a well known new england patriots football player however in the end the jury found that he was just a man who committed a brutal murder. >> reporter: hernandez was a rising star with the new england patriots with a 40 million dollar contract but was dropped from the team after being arefrtsed. in text messages hernandez urged lloyd to meet him the night he was killed. a neighbor's surveillance camera captured him getting in a car. in his own home he was holding something resem bling a gun

before he was killed. there was also a video showing his girlfriend removing a box. hernandez told her to get rid of it. >> reporter: odin lloyd's mother spoke after the verdict. >> he was my strength. i love him dearly. >> reporter: anna werner cbs news, new york. this morning a six-figure reward is being offered for help in solving a 2008 bombing in new york's times square. the explosion targeted a military recruitment station. no one was injured in the blast. officials say several persons of interest have been identified but they're asking the public for help. coming up on the "morning news" now, on the table, a woman protesting the european central bank disrupts a news conference. and later a record-breaking quintuplets are welcomed into

a massive marine helicopter gave beachgoers a surprise. it made an emergency landing in california wednesday. a low oil pressure light went on in in the cockpit. no one was hurt. later it lifted off. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, general motors is protected from pricey lawsuits and a confetti protest against the head of the sennial european bank. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. a judge ruled a bankrupt i have in 2009 shields general motors from death and injury claims tied to faulty ignition switches. they can cause cars to staal unexpectedly. they're tied to 140 deaths. it was argued gm misled the

court because it knew about the ignition problem. it's estimated the ruling protects gm from $10 million. the price of oil hit its highest level this year. the dow finished 70 points higher yesterday. the s&p was up 10. and the nasdaq gained 3 points. shares began trading. it raised $267 million. s.c. sold 17 million shares and $16 a piece. breaking from tradition it said it planned to sell 5% of its shares to individual shares on esty esty's website. the fight for $15 million campaign plan demonstrations in

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. this morning a texas couple who made history is coming to terms with their big new responsibility. they are the parents of the first surviving all-female quintuplets born in the u.s. kevin reece of our houston affiliate khou has the story. >> reporter: this the sonogram that told them their lives were about to change. the first picture of their five little girls. danielle would carry them for 28 weeks, five days. >> now that they're all here this is crazy. it's just crazy. it's just little ol' us.

they're all doing well. it took two weeks to come up with enough names and two of the five are identical twins. >> the two are ava lane and olivia marie, hazel grace, kay, and kate. >> they knew the risk for multiples, but then their 4-year-old daughter blake was conceived through the same method too. >> i'm overjoyed by it. it's awesome. what a legacy we're going to have. >> reporter: this is the first set of quintuplets since 1969. >> it took me a couple of days like, wow, those are ours like, you know. i know i have six daughters right now and i have a joy for kids but never in my life did i ever think i would have six kids much less six girls. >> a reality check for a kwlung

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. all of major league baseball honored an icon wednesday on the 68th anniversary of jackie robinson's breaking the color barrier, every player wore robinson's 42. his 92-year-old widow taking part in the ceremony at dodger stadium along with robinson cano who was named for the pioneer. in the fwabl they whop top the mariners, 5-2. and the puck drops on the % nhl playoffs. the nashville predators take a 3-0 lead over chicago in their series opener but the blackhawks erased a three-goal deficit, sending the game into double overtime.

that's when chicago completes the comeback. marian hossa back to the line. keith scores. duncan keith, the overtime winner and chicago comes back from 3-0 down. >> duncan keith's goal gives the blackhawks a 4-3 win in game one. and the regular nba season comes to a close last night. the new orleans pelicans led by anthony davis and his 31 points beat san antonio, 108-103. the victory clinches the last playoff spot in the western conference in new orleans. they will face the top seeded golden state warriors in the first round of the postseason. and finally the world's highest paid supermodel is calling it kwits after 20 years. gisele bundchen appears in what she says is her final nation show last night in her native brazil. she models an orange and white sun dress as her husband tom brady watched from the front

boston paused wednesday afternoon to mark the second anniversary of the marathon bombings. silence fell at city hall and at fenway park at 2:49 the time the first bomb went off. three people were kill and 260 woulded in the bombings. don dahler met a couple whose lives changed forever. >> reporter: in april 2013 jessica hinskie and patrick downs had been married seven months when they stopped to watch the marathon. the first bomb destroyed both of their left legs and badly damaged her right. it would be two weeks before they saw each other again. in the hospital the couple was visited by a group of marines

including b.j. ganham. >> we just went into the hospital rooms and asked if they wanted us to come in. immediately there was an instant connection. >> all of a sudden i see these big strong not so good-looking guys walk into my hospital room and all of them have got prosthetics. in the short time i had been in the hospital i crossed off all the things i wasn't going to be able to do anymore, running, climbing, biking. >> they were members of the semper fi fund an organization for disabled vets. >> they didn't have to keep coming back. they didn't have to give us hand bikes but they came and gave us so much of a piece of them that will forever be a part of our experience. >> reporter: hinskie made the agonizing decision to have her second leg amputated and isn't ready to talk on camera yet.

breaking news this morning the two-year old struck by a care during a hit and run in kensington has died. david alycia was hit on money and had been in critical condition, he passed overnight other jan car bear owe joins us at police headquarter. her mother went to great lengths to save him jan. >> reporter: police sources tell "eyewitness news" that this two year-old boy hit and now killed by a hit/run driver in kensington has died ape was pronounced dead around 1:30 in the morning. police here are still searching for the driver of the striking vehicle and they're still searching for the driver, in that deadly southwest philadelphia hit and run. she's still not turned herself in but most of these accidents happened monday evening
