you can hear the panic in that voice as a philadelphia police officer is shot and returned to the hospital. that will officer is recovering this morning we are live with what led to the gunfire. >> also, developing right now it looks like a car accident, but police say this is a murder. a chain east food delivery man shot and killed in crescent ville. investigators say the victim crashed his car trying to get away. >> good morning being everyone, it is friday, april 24 i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erika von tiehl. first we start things off with cold temperatures, katie still feeling like march not april. >> absolutely, yes. off to very chilly start out there this morning we start things off though with a look at storm scan3 all completely calm and empty right now. we did actually end up with

more cloud cover overnight than originally anticipate philadelphia quite a few locations, actually helping to limit the worse of the chill but it is still cold. and yep you still got at lows little hint of lake enhanced snow falling across portions. i80 corridor, forks, higher terrain up through the poconos. temperatures as they stands, they are cold, 30's, 20's up at mount pocono, still not close enough to flirt with records. i don't think we're going to have a chance to do that here this morning, we keep an eye on that still through the morning. now the warmest spot of the pack is philadelphia international airport. we actually do not have a freeze watch in effect, but here are the current watches and warnings that are in effect. the warnings now extending into western chester and montgomery, upper bucks counties, but still got just watch across basically the rest of the board here say for cape may county, delco philadelphia county and delaware. that will said, late tonight a new batch of freeze watches take effect here across the board, we'll see how we do.

some of the watches may get flipped over to warnings depending how quickly the temperature drops. meanwhile, as the day goes on, we are starting off with some clouds those should thin out with more sunshine expected here but we saw more clouds than anything yesterday. even still today with more sunshine, i don't think we will have enough of a chance here to warm up past the mid 50's so 3:00 p.m. 54, shooting gosh 56 degrees for official high later on today and as we quickly take a look at your area headlines here, obviously cold ends of the work week, but look ahead to the weekends, there is storm nearby on saturday night. we'll have the impact on how that will affect our area coming up a little later individual tore ya, back to you. >> good morning well, right now the roads are still pretty quiet. only thing do you have watch out for is construction, that lingering construction, we'll have for quite a while. right now the eastbound side, every night they flip it. so because it is eastbound tonight, or this morning rather tomorrow, it will be westbound. so just note that for the

weekend. as we take a look at the eastbound, or the vine street expressway right now traveling between the schuylkill and the parkway you can squeeze by, one lane only, so note that. if you are traveling on the westbound side, it is a breeze, if you are trying to get on the vine street expressway using the eastbound side of the schuylkill, we do have construction which is compromising the left-hand lane. still access the vine street expressway, but you will have that lane closure. generally speaking all of the majors are great. not only in pa, it is pa, jersey delaware, right now everything as i mentioned before well, the roads are still sleeping. it is the best way to put t also, an accident situation in hopewell, new jersey, it is on bear tavern load, at jacobs creek road, all lanes blocked as a result of the accident. soap, if this is where you are headed this morning, scotch road would be your best alternate. no major delays at the airport, no major delays at the airport. >> another philadelphia police officer has a brush with death. >> a man shoots an officer on bike patrol, that suspect was also shot. headquarters to bring us up if he diet. good morning. >> good morning now the officer who was shot was shot in the arm. we are told he is expected to be okay. in the meantime the suspect who was shot was taken to hahnemann university hospital. no update on his condition this morning. take a lock at the video, this is where the shooting unfolded last night right around 10:00 in west philadelphia, near the intersection of 52nd and master streets. police say officer daniel, with the 19th police decision, assigned to bike patrol. he and his partners in the area of wilton street and girard avenue, checking inside for possible narcotics violations inside a van. police say when they approached the suspect backed un and made an u-turn. then officer found that man near 52nd and master, where the shooting unfolded. police say they were having discussion when the suspect says quote i don't want to have to do this and then opens fire. officer cost particular was shot in the arm once again he returned fire, the suspect was

eventually found injured, in the 5,000 block of master street. now, police are not releasing too much information about the suspect who was shot at this point. they are only say that a weapon was found on the scene they're not identifying him. and again they've not provided an update on his condition this morning. in the meantime, we are told that this eight year veteran of the police force this officer in good spirits today they say they are very lucky not talking about something more serious when his condition is concerned. shot in the arm expected to be okay. much more on this story later on in the show. for now we are reporting live outside of the philadelphia police headquarters, jan carabeo, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> following another story delivery man dead after a shooting. he crashed his car while trying to get away, at adams avenue and bingham street in philadelphia's crescent ville neighborhood. investigators believe the victim was making food delivery at the time of the shooting. police have not yet determined if robbery was the motive in the shooting. >> we have some stunning new video, more than dozen are injured after a stage change

change -- collapses at an area high school. >> large group of student were on the stage for a grand finale after concert when as you saw right there the floor of the stage collapsed into the orchestra pit. this happened in westfield indianna about 20 meant north of indianapolis, at least one person is in the hospital we're told in critical condition. >> there was a moment of silence, like real quick moment of silence wherever one was in shock. and then people started screaming and crying, then people started running up to the stage and trying to get people out,. >> now, there is no word on the conditions of any of the other student. school official says classes will resume today. >> back home, septa bus catches fire, it happened around 1:30 this morning at broad street and paterson right in front of an at&t station. driver and passenger on the

service bus got off safely. no word on what may have caused that fire. >> well, chaos in baltimore continues. the city police clashes with demonstrators angry over the death of freddie gray. >> at least two people were arrested there. have been several days every protests in baltimore after gray died from a spinal injury he suffered in police custody. he was reportedly injured as he was handcuffed and put in the back of a police van on april 12th. now, it has been revealed, gray did not have seat bet on do your his ride to the police station unbelted detainees we are told, been paralyzed even killed by rough rides to the police station. a mother's emotional plea results in a big reward in a deadly hit-and-run case in philadelphia. the city announced $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver who hit and killed theresa possi. the 33 year old struck on state road in holmesburg december 23rd. the victim's mother, anna, pushed for answers for months.

and her effort got a big push when she met mayor nutter at a community event this week. >> we will be hearing from me. that's what he said. >> money talks. it just has to reach the right person. and eventually it will. >> now the reward comes just a week after police announce two, $20,000 rewards for separate fatal hit and runs in philadelphia. friends and family mourning the loss of long time south philadelphia resident, killed in a house fire. "eyewitness news" on the scene on federal street. fire started in the second floor bedroom of 69 year old joseph de rose a he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. choking back tears, a long time friend says mr. derosa was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. >> we would go out to lunch continue edge go, to pat's steaks, we would sit on the bench, he would smoke his cigarette, i would make him coffee every morning he drove me crazy but now i miss help. >> neighbors say he was a

heavy smoker. it is unclear right now how that fire started. president obama is ordering review of the us drone strike that killed two hostages including an american. the strike in january did kill two members of al quaida. the us hostage is identified as doctor warren weinstein, an aid work fresh maryland, captured in pakistan in 2011. also killed, was giovanni, health a italian held hostage since 2012. the us did not know that hostages were being held at the compound where strikes were made. your time now 4:39. for the third time in as many days clearing the benches. late night chaos. >> two philadelphia police officers jump into action, heroic more of the dash cam video as the officers free two men trapped in a burning car. we'll be right back.

philadelphia police officer is recovering after he shot in the line of duty. >> officer daniel kostick on bike patrol with two partners near 52nd and mass her a man shot him in the arm. officer kostick is in stable condition. the suspect was also shot, and now he's at hahnemann hospital. deputy police commissioner richard ross says officer kostick will be okay. >> elinguation -- he's in good spirits. i asked him if i could say. that will he said absolutely. he's here with his family right now. we are just very, very lucky. he's very lucky given the circumstances, obviously we do not know what was on this guy's mind to have someone say something like that is highly unusual. >> and reminder you can stay to up date by signing up for breaking news text alertsment just text cbs philly news, all one word to 84816. you can sign up on our website cbsphilly.com.

still got a little hint of light snow falling across central and north central pennsylvania. so, that's what we face this morning, the chill not the snow, we don't have to worry about that. in fact i do think this will all filter away. ends up with more sun than anything. let me take you on baby tour. see the beginning of new storm system gathering strength across texas quite a bit of moisture to work with there. we'll see new storm system develop through the central planes, it likely will come very close to our area. so close in fact, that it may actually end up clinic our region. so i want to walk you through future weather starting off dark and early all good here, watching the same storm finally pivot away. but here is the storm gathering strength. so all the way now, to up 1:00 p.m. tomorrow. look how far north that band of rain has reached. but, it should generally stay just to our south. so see how portions of delaware get clipped by this? i can't rule out that saturday night, and early sunday morning, the southern third of our area, maybe the southern

have lost three in a row, the phils have dropped two straight. now, yesterday phils spotted dustin mcgowan three and a third inning against the marlins, allowed four runs. tips fills continue to struggle both defensively and offensively. they committed two more missed cues yesterday. they lead the majors with 17. the phils also held scoreless until the ninth inning, and it ended up losing this one the final score, nine to one. >> benches cleared after the seventh inning, in yesterday's game between the royals and the white sox. it started when kansas city starter, chicago outfielder adam eaton exchanged words and players charged out of the dugout, as a result. five place were ejected. then the team's finally ended up playing they played 13 innings, royals won the game three to two. >> the pen re lays continue at franklin field today. might be chilly start for some of the young athlete oh, but i used to love the smell of ben gay in the morning. competition in the country's largest track and field event gets underway at 9:00 a.m. today. i'm telling you will it, works

roads and nice friday morning. >> hey, you know, beautiful friday morning. really nothing to worry about just yet. we have construction on the vine street expressway, but still, you can move. eastbound and westbound on the vine, it is really not too much volume at all between the schuylkill and 9a if you are traveling eastbound on the vine as you make your commute between the schuylkill and parkway, you will notice lane blockages, however, starting to wrap things up as they usually do around 5:00 a.m. definitely good news. also, notice police lights here, that would be the schuylkill eastbound approaching the vine street expressway. the left-hand lane closed as a result of the construction on the vine street expressway. you can definitely still access the vine, but you will notice that activity again over toward the left. but, they will start to wrap things up. pa jersey, delaware, everything very quiet in regard to the majors however as we move our way to hopewell township, we have an accident on bear tavern road, jacobs creek road, all lanes blocked scotch road your best alternate. no delays for mass transitment things at the airport looking great. can you bring back the heat and warmth? >> i can at least bring back the sunshine for you.

>> yes, these temperatures have taken us a solid hit here. even though we do still have vale of cloud cover overhead, not really enough to keep us from dropping, you know, below average here, at least on the thermometer reading. so chilly start for us for sure. you still got the breeze out there a lot of spots actually feel more like the 20's, even at this hour, we start things offer by taking you out to the live network. yes, clouds out, there but not hanging low to the ground. you're at 39 degrees here at palmyra cove nature park the wind is pretty light all things considered, but that's not necessarily the story everywhere. storm scan3 remaining quiet yes, little thin vale of clouds for us, at this point. but we expect it to stay dry. now, there are still freeze and freeze watches as well as freeze warnings, in effect this morning. they do not include the poconos. and the reason for that is because the last freeze average, you know, talking about averages it, hasn't actually happened yet. that's why you don't have the coldest spot in the watch or warning zone.
