natasha brown. thanks for joining us. authorities had to go through a second floor window of the home just to get to the kids and rescue them. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live outside the home in kensington. he's got the very latest for us. matt. >> reporter: natasha, we are continuing to learn details about this case but what we have learned so far is certainly disturbing. let's show you what the house looks like here on atlantic street. you can see that house that's involved is the one with the police car still parked outside of it. there have been -- there has been a consistent police presence here all day long. we saw detectives go into the house not long ago as this case continues to develop. the 911 call came from the basement where a 13-year-old boy and his 12, 10 and nine-year-old sisters were locked in. preliminary information from police suggests that their mother a single mom locked them in there last night. somehow the children used a phone to dial 911 and emergency units responded. the front door was locked so a fire truck helped police get

in through the second floor window. from there it was down to the basement where the kids were found safe and unharmed. it happened on eastman trick street a small block where neighbors know one another. those we spoke to couldn't believe what apparently happened inside this home. >> i've known her for almost three years now about two years. she's very, very nice. she treats everybody very nice. when she socializes she's just a kind lady a very disciplined mom and really honestly we're all shocked. >> reporter: police took the kemp's mother to the special victims unit for questioning but no charges have been filed as of yet. neighbors said her first name sharney. as to why she allegedly left her kids in the basement investigators have not provided a motive. after the children were taken into police custody we're told they were taken to a local children's hospital to make sure that they were okay. they got a preliminary checkup but everything worked out with

those kids. they were then taken to the special victims unit where they remain in police custody. we're told that at some point they're expected to be released into the custody of other family members as this case plays out. live in kensington, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> matt thank you very much. meantime police are investigating a deadly crash in gloucester county. chopper3 over the wreck on i-295 in greenwich township this morning. two people were killed. three others injured when two cars collided in the southbound lanes. you can see the guardrail pierced one of those cars. the three injured are expected to be okay. now more than 2500 people are now confirmed dead after the earthquake that rocked nepal and the surrounding region yesterday. most of the people who died were in nepal but casualties have been reported in india and other neighboring countries. as the search and rescue effort continues the united states is already pledged aid and is mobilizing a disaster response team.

four students from allentown's muhlenberg college are studying in nepal this semester. the school has confirmed they are safe and released a statement reading in part "we urge members of the muhlenberg community to remember in their thoughts and prayers the many who perished, were injured or suffered other losses in this disaster and suggest that we support relief efforts when they are announced. also philadelphia is home to more than a thousand refugees who spent two decades living in nepal and as their former home deals with the devastation many can simply just hope for the best. today they opened a new community garden in northeast philadelphia. kyw reporter cherri gregg was there. >> our heart goes out to all those people. >> reporter: this group of refugees have lived in philadelphia for more than half a decade but hearing the plight of loved ones on the outskirts of devastation in nepal raises concerns. >> there's only one ambulance in the entire village.

there's only three policemen. >> reporter: that's because the 7.8 magnitude quake that rocked nepal leveled buildings and collapsed structures killing thousands and injuring thousands more. making it difficult to get aid to those who need it. >> it was very horrifying situation. >> reporter: and now powerful aftershocks have left tens of thousands in the cold, too afraid to come inside. so today building a community garden, thousands of miles away from the devastation is peace, helping these newly settled residents think less about tragedy and more about building bridges to philadelphia. >> a lot of these families are used to gardening in the himalayas and they have a long history of farming back home and being able to do that here in the u.s. definitely makes them feel more settled. >> reporter: there's still quite a bit of work to do here but once they're done fruits and vegetables for their meals

and a little piece of home. so they'll build and plant and hopefully grow here as they think about those they love in nepal. in northeast philadelphia, cherri gregg, kyw news radio for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> of course stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the aftermath in nepal both on television and any time on our web site cbsphilly.com. turning to our weather now, not a bad way to end the weekend. still on the chilly side for late april at least for me. so can we expect a warmup for the start of the work week? well, let's check in, our friends meteorologist kate bilo is in for justin and joins us with the first forecast. >> hey, natasha. today turned out to be the nicest day of the past few. it felt very warm out there with the sun beating down even though we were still about 3 degrees below average less winds, stronger sun and a few degrees of warmth really made today feel pretty nice but on storm scan3 a few clouds are starting to move through, we had a lot of sunshine earlier

now. clouds have taken over. tomorrow showers will follow that same path from north to south. isolated showers here and there, not a big deal for tomorrow. let's talk about the temperatures. because we know the average is 67. friday we only got to 56. yesterday 58. today though we got back to 64 pretty close. temperatures may take a little bit of a dive tomorrow back into the low 60's but by the middle of the week we finally go above average. a nice warmup is on the way. right now we're holding in the 60's. 62 at the airport 62 degrees in wilmington and 60 degrees in reading it's 69 in willow grove and 57 in quakertown. monday across the region expect temperatures slightly below average. a shower possible in the city a better chance in the poconos and it's cool down the shore with highs only in the visits so coming up we'll talk more about our one more cool day tomorrow, then the warmth returns and we have a few shower chances later in the week as well. i'll give you more on that coming up in the seven-day forecast. natasha.

>> thanks. extra police officers are deployed throughout baltimore tonight after protests turned violent. 34 people were arrested following saturday's rallies. some stores were looted and at least one car was set on fire. demonstrators say they won't stop until the city charges the police officers involved in the death of freddie gray. gray died last week of a spinal cord injury while in police custody. the department has acknowledged he should have received medical attention sooner. gray's family has asked for an end to the violence. gray's friend's family and supporters began saying goodbye today at a wake. the 25-year-old will be laid to rest tomorrow. his family has started anline fund to help cover the burial costs. a solemn dedication today for the overbrook man who was murdered while out walking his dog. the african episcopal church of saint thomas planted and blessed a new tree on its grounds in james stillman's name. at today's ceremony his family

and friends joined community members and church officials to remember stillman's life and try to make sense of his killing. >> i do know that many young people lack a caring adult in their lives. these are not excuses simply explanations. it does not make it right. it just makes it real. >> stole man was shot and killed last month. three teenagers have been charged in his death. police say 15-year-old hamilton pulled the trigger after stuhlman begged for his life. new details in the vermont suv crash that seriously injured louie freeh last august. officials say freeh likely would have died if emergency crews hadn't worked so quick to stop the bleeding on his severed leg artery. freeh spent three weeks in the hospital recovering before finally being released. >> ♪ stay with us. still ahead on "eyewitness news" tonight a young man's dream to become an eagle scout, it comes true but it wasn't an easy journey. how he and his family refused

there is. tough road for a guy trying to earn the highest honor in scouting. >> some people focus on the wheelchair not on the person. that's the first thing that we have to get past. >> reporter: christian got past it all attending every meeting going on every camping trip sacrificing comfort for sheer determination. for all that, sunday he achieved his life's work. (applause). >> reporter: love from a pair of proud parents. >> if i could hug him to death i probably would. >> reporter: joy from the spirit of his successful son. >> i feel happy. triumph that needs no translation. in king of prussia, steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> the eagles hosted their sixth annual huddle up for autism event at lincoln financial field this afternoon. the carnival style event raises money for families living with autism. players and cheerleaders were on hand for the big event and it also served to educate people about autism and raise

awareness for the center of autism research at children's hospital of philadelphia. now president barack obama tapped into his funny side for the white house correspondent's dinner. the commander-in-chief poked fun at the press at politicians even himself. >> look, it is true i have not managed to make everybody happy, six years into my presidency some people still say i'm arrogant and aloof condescending. some people are so dumb . >> [laughter] a few weeks ago dick cheney says he thinks i'm the worst president of his lifetime which is interesting because i think dick cheney is the worst president of my lifetime. (applause). >> well, one zipping gary after another. more than 2600 guests attended the dinner a mix of politicians journalists and celebrities. it's dubbed the nerd prom. i almost forgot that.

>> i love that. >> are we nerds as journalists. >> i think we kind of are. >> good to have you here. >> good to be here. >> on a pretty day. >> turned out beautiful. 64 degrees below average felt so warm today. >> it was so pretty. it was a slow walk inside today. >> yes, absolutely. kind of day you wanted to be outside. yesterday ended up being nice in the afternoon. it was my dad's wedding. shout out to him. >> congratulations. >> it was wonderful. turned out to be a really beautiful afternoon for pictures so we have that. let's take a look outside now and you can see a lot of folks down on the ocean city boardwalk enjoying a cool but pleasant evening. live on skycam3 it's still nice and bright outside down in ocean city cape may county, some people walking onto the beach right now and down the shore a little cooler at the coast it always is unless you get that nice west wind but the wind off the water on the immediate beach and boardwalk you definitely need the jacket. let's talk about the daylight because as you can see it's still looking like full sunshine out there down the shore.

sunset tonight is at 7:50. by may first 7:55. may 31st, 8:22, those long summer days begin after memorial day and we are getting more than two and a half minutes of daylight each day now t take a look at storm scan3 which again showing clouds drifting through. it turn out to be mostly cloudy this afternoon but still nice breaks of sunshine that tell you we were outside all day, had the kids on the bike path. beautiful day for it and it felt so warm compared to the 50's of late last week. look at the showers to the north. keep your eye on the rotation around that storm system. these showers will try to drift down tomorrow. they will be few and far between. don't be surprised if you see a shower tomorrow afternoon or evening. we're the holding onto the 60's at philadelphia international airport, 62 in wilmington and 58 degrees in millville. little cooler to the north. scranton at 52, albany 55 right now. as we get into the day tomorrow again with that storm to the north showers will try to rotate down, temperatures holding in the low 60's thanks to the increased cloud cover with those showers moving through but then high pressure

starts to plant itself overhead tuesday, we get back to the upper 60's, finally above average and then into the 70's by wednesday. i'll show you briefly the timing on these showers. we wake up to full sunshine on monday morning no problems there but by late afternoon and as you can see these are few and far between a-few polka dot showers around 4, 5 o'clock. many of us will not see anything at all. don't be surprised if during your evening commute you need to flip those windshield wipe areas few times. this cool puddle of air in the upper atmosphere settled over portions of new england. we see ridging take hold on tuesday as high pressure settles itself. wednesday we get into some of the warmest air we've felt in awhile. we get nicer weather for the weekend. if you're an allergy sufferer you have been struggling the past couple weeks and we're still in high range. tuesday is a little lower but oak birch and maple are predominant allergens in the atmosphere right now. overnight partly cloudy,

chilly down 45 degrees. for your monday partly sunny a stray shower in the afternoon we're at 62 for the daytime high and here's your eyewitness weather seven-day forecast. you can see that nice little warmup we've been talking about where it's 69 degrees on tuesday, mostly sunny. wednesday is kind of the centerpiece of the forecast at least for the next few days and then watch for showers to move back in thursday. we'll clear it out a cooler day friday. but as of now next weekend looks fans with highs near 70. saturday and again on sunday. >> beautiful. we're finally going to shake the chill. >> looks like it. >> let's check in with lesley. >> beautiful day at the ballpark. phillies had the chance to take their second series victory of the season against the braves and it was the phanatic's birthday a big celebration for the long time phillies mascot and fan favorite. first inning ryan howard at the plate big fella starting to heat up, second homer of the series. fightans take the lead. to the fifth the game is tied ben revere hits a line driven

into the corner. fred galvez scores on the play. revere with a triple. phillies regain the lead on ben's fourth rbi of the year. in the seventh phils got an insurance run. herrera hit agrounder to freeman. galvez scores to make it five-three. to the ninth jonathan papelbon gave up a homer but got kelly john tonton fly out with two runners on and the phillies beat the braves five to four. >> nice to see the offense bounce back with howie's big blast and he's swung the bat well all day so he's -- it's good to see that. >> right. >> right now trying to get good pitches to hit. not trying to do too much. so, you know, today felt good, yesterday felt good, felt good the day before that. just continue to try to do that. >> we've been talking about it four. the nfl draft is thursday night eagles with the 20th pick in the first round if they don't trade up. eagles have a need at the wide

receiver position after germy maclin signed with kansas city. could the birds use that first pick for wideout. >> we have needs at a lot of different positions. that's no slight on any player we have here. but we have a need for good football players at any position. the wide receiver position in this draft as i said before there's a lot of good players at that spot. that could help us that could improve and then we evaluated those guys accordingly. i think we've got them if the right spot. >> the flyers search for a new coach continues. latest reports from former oilers coach dallas aikens as another candidate for that job. he was fired after a disappointing two seasons in edmonton. game four between the celtics and cavs. jr smith whacks crowd in the face. didn't matter. lebron james scoring 27 points handing out eight assist. the cavs swept the celtics
