captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday april 27th 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning aftershocks continue to rattle nepal hampering rescue efforts after a deadly earthquake. more than 3,300 were killed. thousands were injured. the dead include three americans. there are reports of significant damages in remote villages that rescue crews have yet to reach. there have been dozens of powerful aftershocks. an aid worker was doing a television interview yesterday when one hit. >> it's trim bling. i'm going outside. i'm really sorry. bye. tens of thousands are homeless in the town of kathmandu. others whose homes still stand are afraid to be inside. there are shortages of food and

water. power is out in most areas and hospitals are so overwhelming it's intent. international aid is starting to arrive. >> reporter: as the death toll continues to rise they pulled a man alive from cankathmandu. it's been hampered by a series of ongoing powerful aftershocks. thousands of residents have abandoned their homes, setting up camps in streets as the injured flock to hospitals for cares. >> most suffer from head injuries. many suffering from head injuries, spine injuries and abdominal injuries. the pentagon has dispatched a u.s. military plane from delaware with a disastrous

assist team on board as well as 45 tons of cargo. >> making sure which planes can go in, you know. what is the most important supplies to give it to the people and getting it off the airplanes, off the tarmac onto the fields. >> people were saying pray for nepal on the ground and in boston people lit candles and offered prayers for the dead. one man there said his entire family in nepal is suffering and he feels helpless as they try to survive but drew comfort, he said, from the show of support here in the united states. >> all right. mark albert in washington. thank you, mark. a quake caused an avalanche at the base of mt. everest.

one sherpa who died said it sounded like demons descending on the mountain. a wave of snow, ice, and rock buried people on saturday. others are trapped at higher camps because their ladders and ropes were swept away. charlie d'agata has more. >> reporter: like a nuclear explosion, one survivor put it the moment the powerful earthquake shook the world's tallest mountain to the core and unleashed a giant avalanche of snow and ice and rock roaring toward base camp. at least three americans are among those who died when it came crashing down. in addition to 33-year-old google executive dan it's been confirmed a 28-year-old medic from new jersey was among the bodies recovered and 61-year-old

london. >> coming up on "cbs this morning," the latest on the rescue operation on top of the world. hail and flood-producing rain. the system is moving east this morning. a tornado watch is posted in southeast texas. and the threat of severe weather extends along the western and central gulf coast. at least 11 tornados were reported south of dallas-ft. worth late yesterday. trees toppled, roofs were blown off and a tractor-trailer was overturned but so far there are no reports of injuries. and hail some of it large enough to break car windows, fell south of dallas yesterday. a funeral will be held today for freddie gray the black man

who died while in the baltimore police custody. at wake sunday mourners filed past his coffin for hours. gray was also remembered at a church service earlier in the day. the pastor says gray's family doesn't want any more violence. on saturday a peaceful demonstration did turn violent. a mob attacked patrol cars and threw bottles, rocks, and cones at officers. police arrested dozens of protesters six officers sustained injury. a cyber security breach at the white house last october involved some of president obama's e-mails. none of his personal deviation were hack birthday u some of the white house computers contained unclassified exchanges the president had with people outside of the administration. it's suspected hackers behind the russian government were behind the cyber attacks.

opening statements are expected today in the colorado trial of james holmes. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: 12 jurors and 12 alternates will begin hearing the case against james holmes later today. in july 2012 police say holmes started firing inside an aurora county movie theater during the midnight showing of "the dark rises." many thought he was wearing a costume as part of a publicity stunt. >> we have another person shot outside. >> reporter: holmes apz lawyer says their client was the shooter but he was having a psychotic episode. he's pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. jurors will have to decide whether he was insign at the time of the shooting. the defense argued holmes can't get a fair trial because of publicity, but the judge refused to move it to another county.

this morning five sailors are missing in waters off alabama after a weekend tragedy. a powerful storm capsized sailboats participating in a mobile bay regatta. two bodies have been found. jericka duncan shows us the search efforts. >> look at this look at this. >> reporter: they could see the ominous clouds looming behind their boat. as the storm moved closer waves were buffeted. 77-mile-per-hour wind gusts whipped through mobile bay late saturday afternoon. one boater reported boats sinking so fast people didn't have time to grab life preservers. randy rutledge and his girl frenld said they were in the water for two hours before being spotted. >> the storm just subsided just

this morning japan's prime minister is in boston for the second day of his week-long u.s. visit. he visited the kennedy library and duaner. he heads to washington tomorrow for talks with president obama and a state dinner at the white house. and now to protecting space. top military and intelligence leaders are worried that our satellites are vulnerable to attack and it's the job of the branch of the air force called space command to file one. david martin filed this report last night. >> reporter: the research done here was kept secret for many years and for a good reason
