show more than 3600 people died in the quake. more than 6500 others are injured. rescuers are working around the clock to find people burried in all of that rubble. the us and other nations are responding to the disaster. the pentagon says a plane caring medical personnel search and rescue teams left dover air force base yesterday. >> and this is truly terrifying. a wall of snow descend interesting all directions, this was shot at the base camp at mount evrest. the quake triggered avalanch burying part of the base camp parked with climbers, at least 18 people including three americans died and dozens more were injured. >> stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the aftermath in nepal, both on television and of course on line at cbsphilly.com. back here at home, charges are pending against a mother who allegedly lock her four children in the basement overnight. that home is on the 1900 block of east atlantic street. police say those children had no food, water or bathroom, but they did have a phone.

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins us now at the special victims unit with the latest information jan good morning. >> reporter: erika, good morning, police say those kids had one phone that was capable of dialing one number, thankfully it was 911. meantime here, at the special victims unit this morning police continue to investigate. they have not yet released the identity of the mother involved. but they say she lock her four kids in a basement in kensington over this past weekends for nearly 15 hours as punishment. it was inside this base until the kensington where police found four children this weekend, locked away without food water or a bathroom. neighbors who know the mother police say is responsible are shocked. >> it is so not like this lady. i have known her for almost two years now almost two years. she is very, very nice. she treats everybody very nice. when she socialize z she is just a kind laid. >> i police called to the home on the 1900 block every east

atlantic street around 1:30, sunday evening investigators say the kids have been locked in the basement since 11:00 p.m. the night before. one of the children had a cell phone that could only dial 911. and that is how the kid got help. but when police arrived they couldn't get in. so they called the fire department for assistance. >> the firemen put a ladder up against the house they climb up the ladder, went through the window, opened the door. >> when crews got to the basement they found a 13 year old boy and his three little sisters ages 12, ten and nine. hungry and shaken, but with no visible injuries, all four were taken to the hospital for evaluation, and then to the special victims unit where police are investigating. back in kensington, friends of all ages are just trying to make sense of what happened. >> i was like devestated because like i'm really close to her and it is like nothing -- i just started crying. i never met a person that would do that to their kids. >> yes, she was actually friends with one of the little girls who was found inside of

the basement. meantime this morning, this mother will face number of charges, including four counts every endangering the welfare after child. we will continue to follow this story. for now liver outside of the special victims unit, jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> thank if you, also this morning, child is injured after a fire starts in one home and spreads to two others. it happened on the 2600 block of north 18th street. fire crews had to deal with heavy smoke before finding the source of the blaze. the child inside one of the homes was transported to saint christopher's for smoke inhalation. no word right now on that child's condition. >> also, new this morning two armed men broke into a home in the talcony neighborhood. home invasion happened in the 6600 block of hagerman street after 11:00 last night. investigators tell us, the robbers got away with a purse and cell phone. no details right now on how much cash may have been in the purse. no one was hurt. police continue their investigation. it is 5:03. traffic and weather together on the 3's. katie? >> good morning, ukee, off to

pretty quiet start here on the cbs-3 skydeck. i hear the birds singing their tune this morning, eventually we likely see couple of scattered showers rolling on through courtesy of retreating system. that's real at this. so we do have to allow for little hint of unsettled weather here today. pretty quiet note for the work week ahead, coup -- cool too. when we zoom out even once, you can begin to see some of the little speckles of green. look close h.u.p. across northeastern pennsylvania, generally just sort every sign of what's to come for us later today. i would say primarily it is the afternoon and very early evening, the further south he is zero east you go you will see any showers moving n but again, scattered is the key phrase there. thirty-nine is the current temperature meanwhile at mount pocono. cool enough to warrant a jacket for sure at philadelphia international airport. we are currently at 39 degrees modest breeze out of the northwest, than breeze likely pikes up with time here today. once the showers get here, again, scattered in nature, but will also be accompanied by a breeze, few more clouds, so looks as though we start offer nice, bright, sin, then

city between 32nd and wal-mart driver. local power outages taking out traffic lights in this region. also still dealing with the fuel spill up in trevose street road at reading avenue. this is from earlier tractor-trailer accident. they are on the scene trying to clean things up, and the new jersey river line experiencing 30 minute service this morning still due to some signal problems, and westbound on the turnpike little slow past bensalem. do have construction with the right lane blocked the airport looking good this morning, erika we send it back to you. >> thank you. happening today the long awaited death penalty trial begins for colorado theater shooting suspect james holmes. holmes is accused of opening fire at midnight showing of the batman movie in 2012 killing 12 people and wounding 70 more. cbs news correspondent omar villafranca has that story now from colorado. >> twelve jurors, 12 alternates will beginning hearing the case against james holmes later today n july 2012, police say, holmes started firing inside a

colorado movie theater during midnight showing of the dark night rises. he was dress in the body armor, many of the victims thought he was wearing a costume as part of a publicity stunt. >> i got people running out the these their are shot. >> holmes' lawyer says their client was the shooter but he was having a psychotic episode. he has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. jurors will have to decide if holmes was legally insane at the time of the shooting. the defense argues, holmes can't get a fair trial because of the extensive publicity. but why the refused to move it to another county. for victims and the families every those who died, moving past the massacre has not been easy. marcus weaver was shot inside the theater and will testify at the trial. >> it wears on you and people don't understand that a lot of us have ptsd and all of these things that are all caused by actually the one person. >> holmes' parents have publicly begged prosecutors to consider a plea deal that would take the death penalty off the table.

omar villafranca cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> the defense starts making its case today in the sentencing phase of the boston marathon bombers trial. twenty-one year old tsarnaev dzhokhar was convicted of 30 federal charges in the twin bombings that killed three people and wounded more than 260 others in april 2013. this phase of the trial will determine if tsarnaev will be executed or spend the rest of his life behind bars. >> the manna cured of shooting a philadelphia police officer last week is now charged with attempted murder. william was arraigned yesterday after being released from the hospital. police say he shot officer daniel kostick in the arm when kostick tried to question him about drugs. kostick was released from the hospital last friday. knoblen was shot during the exchange, he will be back in court next month. fiery scene on busy highway we'll show you that inferno when a tanker erupt into planes.

old, three others were hurt, but they are expected to be okay. that accident is under investigation. >> and, fire engulfs tanker truck on busy california freeway snarling traffic. thick black smoke bill owed from the wreck on the 710 freeway in los angeles. that truck was caring thousands of gallons of gasoline. the highway was shut down in both directions, as fire crews battled those flames. the coast guard continues it search for five people missing, after powerful storm in alabama. on saturday a storm caused winds in excessive 70 miles per hour. many boaters in mobile bay including mobile bay including those in a regata, were caught off guard. officials say ten boats overturned, two bod wrist found, as well. forty people had to be rescued. airplanes and rescue boats have covered more than 1700 square miles of the bay searching for more survivors. >> the storm just subsided, just enough, that i could keep my head up.

though it will lift north in latitude. so we are going to stay in the clear. but what we do have here today is the retreat of pesky storm system still trying to fun nel lingering moisture, also, a breeze inbetween low and high pressure as high pressure tries to regain control. that means we end up with couple of scattered showers out there today. that said, you know, i would say if you're not crazy if you are like me, vest more p when it comes to how much stuff you want to take out the door leave your em were a home probably get away without t intricate hairstyle then you probably want one. these showers are scat nerd nature, not terribly worried about the wet weather issue out, there worth a mention come tomorrow high pressure regains control finding northerly breeze, but temperatures oddly enough are warming up. we should hit upper 60s wednesday, high pressure, my favorite day personally with the low and mid 70s. here comes the next storm system starting to evolve by

thursday, that does bring in our next chance for some not just showers but maybe some steady rain, all dependent upon how the storm actually evolves. so we have to keep an eye on. that will could also mean there is rain in the forecast for friday, too. again we'll let you know. >> finally forecast little more consistent with warm weather, as we finish off the month of april. monday morning traffic looking okay this morning that's good news, storm scan3 nice and quiet. so no trouble on the roads as far as wet conditions. we take you to the schuylkill, again, this is eastbound headlights just past 202. actually both directions looking good this morning. volume certainly will be picking up though shortly as we head into the start of the morning rush hour. we take you to the blue route. this is just past mid-county looking southbound, tail light, okay, but certainly this little jam up later as well. area speeds, no problems, on the speed limit in and out of the city on the schuylkill, 55 miles per hour, no problems in south jersey right now over the -- over the bridges looking pretty good on the a.c. expressway, as well. fuel spill continues.

trevose street road at reading avenue from earlier tractor-trailer accident. crews on the scene trying to clean that up quickly. hopefully that happens shortly. route 40 down near atlantic city accident between 32nd street and wal-mart drive. local power outages affecting traffic lights in this region, as well. again, new jersey river line, specking 30 minute service this morning still due to some of the signal problems. that have been ongoing. then also on the northeast extension, northbound, just before lansdale construction taking out the right lane. mass transit airport looking good. a look at your ride. >> get ready for more orange barrels if you are driving on the vine street expressway later tonight. only one lane will be open, on the eastbound side of the highway between the schuylkill and broad street from midnight until 5:00 a.m. it is part of a four year project to replace seven bridges over the highway. same road closures will be in effect through wednesday then crews will work on the westbound side the rest of the week just a heads up for you. >> 5:16. still ahead on "eyewitness news". >> it is a reunion two years in the making.

we use the tutorials. one of the tutorials showed things like how to change the background color in an online test environment and it takes time away from learning math and science and english and all the things that i really enjoy learning. they can't do as much because they have to administer this test on the computer. and that's really one of the worst parts of the test. i need to promote my new business. and do it on budget.

flowers, into his wake, jasmin lee is gray's cousin? when i go in there the reality of he is really gone. >> people people who did not know gray. >> i have sons, wife sons, you know it, could have been one every them. >> unanswered questions about gray's death only adds to the grief and outrage the 25 year old died from a spinal injury, a week after being taken into police custody. protests over the case turned violent, in the city saturday, with stores trashed and some people clashing with officers. yesterday, community members helped with the clean up. >> we have to stand up for those who are upset. when people are grieving, they say thing they don't mean. they do things they don't understand. so do you have stand in the gap for them. sometime it is about cleaning up their mess. >> long time maryland congressman, elijah comings called for thorough investigation. >> out of this will comma stronger baltimore. to, a model police department.

m size, but softball size? >> even golf ball size. that will make a serious dent in your car. but softball can be deadly, frankly, if that hits you. my gosh. that's really scary stuff. and we are looking right now still, some real strong to severe weather down across the lone star state. in fact, we zero in over the last say 18 hours of different hail or actually all severe weather reports and there is a slew of them couple of tornados looking closely, red coloring indicating where there were some tornados spotted. all of the hail reports that came n they extends all the way from the panhandle region, then out into the red river valley. i mean there is really was expands i have watch of severe wet their errupted. meanwhile, we look forward in our own forecast, no severe weather issues to report. 62 degrees, the expected high today. cooler than average. we start with more sunshine, see the clouds build with time, yes, couple of showers. but i am thinking really spot any nature. so not a really huge impact on your day. but you might have to flick the windshield wipers once or
