under siege. tempers flare. protests grow out of control. there's looting violence and businesses going up in flames. tonight a call for calm but many wonder when peace will prevail on the streets of a city in turmoil. good evening. i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. today's violence follows the police involved death of 25-year-old freddie gray. tonight, the city of baltimore is under a state of emergency. baltimore's mayor announced a curfew hoping to restore calm and freddie gray's relatives are calling for peace tonight. pleading with angry demonstrator demonstrators to end the violence that's gripped the city city. natasha brown joins us now live from baltimore's man daw within mall that was the target looting just hours ago. what are you seeing there tonight. >> we can tell you it's been a violent day of rioting here in the city of baltimore. all day today. here tonight we can show you that there's been a wall of police officers guarding

mondawmin mall trying to keep looters at bay. one of many areas in this city devastate beside a day of destruction. as firefighters battled battled the enormous flames at his woo warehouse police were mobilizing around the city. 5,000 officers from the mid atlantic region have been requested to help keep the piece in baltimore. chaos erupt the this afternoon hours after freddie gray's funeral a protest that had been planned on social media spiraled out of control almost immediately. some rioters hurled rocks at police officers. others set cruisers on fire and looted stores. smoke poured from a cvs that burst into flames just feet away from where police officers were standing. officers used smoke grenades and pepper spray to keep protesters at bay. at least 15 officers were hurt. two are in the hospital. one was knot knock unconscious. as firefighters worked to douse flames around the city, one rioter was seen puncturing a hose. at a press conference baltimore's mayor stephanie rollings blake called for calm

and said that those responsible for today's violence will be held accountable. it is idiotic to think that by destroying your city that you're going to make live better for anybody. >> meantime maryland's governor act activated the national guard guard. police have made at least two dozen arrests earlier in the day baltimore police reported a credible threat that rival gangs in the city were working together to target police officers. and as a result of the violence the orioles postponed monday night's game against the white sox. well we have also now learned that baltimore city schools will be closed tomorrow in light of the rioting. the attorney for freddie gray' family says they are devastated by the violence. they are shocked and they are urging calm. but we can tell you what we're seeing and what we're feeling at this hour here in baltimore is that calm is certainly not happening right now. there are buildings that are a blaze. choppers are flying over our head this is certainly an erie

feeling in a city that is on edge. we're live in baltimore tonight natasha brown cbs3 "eyewitness news". natasha thank you this video from the miffled riots captured a lot of attention tonight. vietnam veteran stood between the protesters and the police much robert valentine told the protestersing to home. and after awhile they did. he said todays destruction was quote not relevant to the issue of freddie gray's death. gray was laid to rest earlier today at an emotional service. 2500 mourners packed baltimore's new shiloh baptist church remembering gray's live. the 25-year-old died april april 19th days after he was arrested. he asked for medical attention multiple times during his arrest arrest. doctors later discovered he suffered a fatal spinal cord injury. police have acknowledged they should have given gray medical attention on the spot. instead of waiting as long as they did. again, here is where we stand this hour in baltimore. maryland's governor has declared a state of emergency tonight and

activated the national guard. 5,000 additional police officers have been requested to help bring about peace in baltimore. and a citywide occur fee will go into effect tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m. you can get any overnight developments on "eyewitness news" this morning starting at 4:30 and also any time at cbsphilly.com. tonight crews are still cleaning up remnants of a deadly wreck in lower providence montgomery county. a tractor trailer and tanker carrying sewage collided just before dawn on south park avenue. this crash killed the tank consider truck driver and ignited cosmetic powder that spilled out of the semi and on to the road. authorities say part of south park avenue will be closed at least through the morning rush. also tonight we continue to follow the condition of a delaware family poisoned by a pesticide last month while on vacation in the u.s. virgin islands. since that time, "eyewitness news" has found out that the same pesticide is being used here in large quantities.

mower ferns four americans among the dead. katmandu they are digging through mountains of rubble trying to save anyone who might be alive. but remote villages are cut off from help altogether. and there's fear there may be many more dead there. tonight we know the identity the suspect in custody for stabbing a worker at a mainline school. >> sir, can you tell us why you allegedly did this? >> that was our walt hunter questioning suspect ivan moore who used to work at the john m. barrack hebrew academy in radnor. police say he got into the school today and then stabbed and through bleach on to a kitchen worker who he used to work with. the victim's injuries are serious before the they're not live threatening. moore tried to make a get away on a septa trolley but was taken into custody in haverford. the school went into block down. no children were injured. new at 11:00 tonight a crime spree targeting the elderly. police say woman is pretending to check on seniors right before she robs them. it's happened across gloucester county.

and greenwich township, national park and wept deptford where "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is with one victim's story story. >> reporter: west deptford police say a money hungry predator is lurking. and she'll do whatever it takes to get her hands on your money. >> i fell down schenn got my wallet it. >> this 88-year-old man asked us not to show his face. out of fear he'll ab tacked again. police say the suspect knocked on the man's door last week, got inside then beat him before taking his money. >> she could have killed me. >> this man isn't alone. police have four victims and eight robbery attempts under investigation. detectives described the woman as african-american age 5060 with bushy hair and glasses. >> it's definitely the worst of worst when you prey on an elderly victim. >> assistant police chief sean morning kenna told "eyewitness news", the robberies happened in broad daylight and the woman attacked at random. >> there's been intelligence

today the pennsylvania supreme court reinstated the child endangerment convict of roman catholic monsignor william lynn. he was the first u.s. church official prosecuted over his handling of sex abuse complaints complaints. lynn served half of a three to six year prison term when superior courts toed his conviction in 2013. he's been on house arrest ever since at a northeast philadelphia rectory. lynn has 14 days to appeal the ruling. angry parents are asking questions after a local school board voted to do away with the librarian position at its elementary schools due to lack

check out. you shouldn't have to take out a magnifying glass and look at the little fine print that this expired last week. >> reporter: three on your side first reported on the problem two years ago. and it's still happening. >> most states would say, you must put the correct price on the shelf. not one that's expired. >> reporter: some states have even sued walgreens for this. >> this level of consumer deception is inexcusable. from a corporation as sophisticated as walgreens. >> reporter: last june walgreens settle admit sorey lawsuit that alleged the chain engaged in a pattern of advertising lower prices on display tags but charged higher prices at the check out. so what can you do if you find outdated sales stickers? speak up. >> it was supposed to be $5 off or something on the little sticker. >> the times that i did i got the sale price. even though the sale had expired. even so, dwarf ski believes walgreens needs to get its act together. >> walgreens is just being

awhile. >> um-hmm. we're looking at real spring weather as we end the month of april. we've been waiting all month. finely we're going to see it. outside right now temperatures are cooling with a clear sky but we'll jump in 20 degrees during the afternoon. take a look outside. temperatures in the 50s and some fours center city philadelphia looking good with the clouds breaking. on storm scan3 we have upper level low pressure system giving us some clouds. moisture to the north that slowly moving away and that will allow the skies to clear tomorrow. so here's a look at our weather headlines. starting off on a chilly note, but then we'll be seeing april warmth and then we have to keep an eye on the late week period for a lingering area of low pressure that could mess things up weatherwise. first, here's the weather you'll wake up. 41 in the poconos. 44 in allentown. 46 in philadelphia. but by the afternoon as we advance the clock through the day, you'll see those afternoon temperatures well into the 60s jumping some 20 degrees from the morning. so that's the good news. the bad news is the fire risk will be rising across the region. we'll have warm temperatures.

we'll also have winds gusting to about 25 miles an hour. the relative humidity is low. we have those dry fuels in our suburbs and more rural areas the dry branches and dry brush. please be aware of that especially come tomorrow afternoon. high pressure will sit right over us. we'll have plenty of sunshine and then as our storm continues to full farther away the winds settle down wednesday this will be the peak of the warmth temperatures well into the 70s. a real perfect day on hump day. then things begin to fall apart a little bit. tracking this area of low pressure you can see the isobars are lines of equal pressure stacked around it. this is the sent of the low. the strongest part and it will continue to move toward the northeast. now our latest computer guidance suggested it stays to the east. and far enough away from us to have major impact but it will be breezy cool, you have on shore flow and that means it stays pretty cloudy for thursday and friday. we'll keep an eye on that as it continues to track further out to sea we might end up were i was better late week period.

philadelphia eagles introduced their new cheer squad for the 2015 season. ♪ >> "eyewitness news" joinings a sold out crowd at the kimmel center for the eagles cheerleaders final audition. 60 young ladies competing for that squads toes 38 spots. they were judged on their physical fitness and, of course, their dance moves. fans also got in on the action this year by submitting questions via social media fort interview portion. you can meet the new squad on the eagles website. we'll be right back.
