"eyewitness news" at 6:00 starts right now. now at 6:00 chemical fumes spread through a south jersey business. it doesens of employees are sick even, some even had to be rushed to the hospital. the and tonight investigators are trying to pinpoint what went wrong. right now, they are focused on the hvac system. good evening, i'm jessica dean. i'm chris may. it develop at home infusions therapy on grant street south in hammington atlantic county. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is live with an update on the investigation, cleve. >> reporter: chris, crews cleared out this afternoon but early on this was a very busy staging area for all of the ambulances and paramedics. they had dozens of people on this lawn and surrounding parking lots being evaluated

for breathing problems. >> we could not tell what it was. we thought the we smelled a slight chemical smell. we got everyone out. >> reporter: managers evacuated 90 employees from home solutions corporate headquarters after several people complained of headaches and nausea. paramedics checked out 40 people for inhalation issues sending six to the hospital by ambulance and two on helicopters. >> they were complaining of the burning sensation in the respiratory system. i don't know whether those two individuals were closest to the area affected but because of the seriousness of that nature, any respiratory, serious respiratory injuries are taken to a trauma center. >> reporter: atlantic county hazmat experts found a cause particular chemical and discovered evidence of the refridge rant leak in the duct work of the air conditioning system. >> an r22 or neuro methane refridge rant used from the hva ac system. by early afternoon they sent employees home as continuing initials work on locating the the source of the possible leak and then fixing it. compliance officer melony,

didn't feel sick but saw lots of people who did. how is everybody doing. >> we're all concerned about you know, our fellow employees and we are waiting to hear. they are testing systems now that everybody is out of the building. we are waiting to hear if they can determine what the problem was. >> reporter: atlantic care tells me they cannot give us updates on any specific patient that is were out here today. we did see people up on the have roof checking out the h v ac systems. health solutions say they are not sure when they will be able to bring everybody back to work. reporting live from hammington, cleve bryan cbs-3 one "eyewitness news". >> cleve, thanks very much. chopper three is over the scene of the fire in atlantic city this afternoon. it was a two alarm blaze that broke out just after 1:30. the building was vacant and we're told that three-quarters of it is over the the water. fire boat was called into assist. it took an hour for fire fighters to bring that under control. there were no injuries reported and officials are investigating how it began. a picture perfect day warm sunny out there but

mother nature is keeping us on our toes. meteorologist kathy orr is live on the sky deck tracking some changes in the form of cooler temperatures, kathy. >> we have cooler temperatures, we will have some wind and it will get dreary around here, but again a little bit of the roller coaster ride of sorts. today was a beauty. i hope you enjoyed it. high temperature in philadelphia 77 degrees. normally we are at 69 for this time of the year. so soaring well above average. right now temperatures still mild in the 70's, 60's in the poconos. 66 degrees in wildwood. the atlantic city airport at 75. this evening temperature stay at 07 by 7:00p m. if you want to run go for a walk, it will be beautiful. 9:00 o'clock 65. sixty-two at 11:00 p.m. all eyes on this coastal low that stays to the south and east of us but another system will join it and keep it damp and cool for at least the the next couple of days. we will talk about that of

course with the seven day forecast. we're talking about much cooler weather isolated showers but then in the seven day, chasing 80 degrees. this time it is a summer-like pattern that will stick. we will talk about that when i join you inside. >> we will see you then, thanks very much. authorities in chester county say a world war two veteran died because his own son failed to properly take care of him. now two years late their sonnies facing murder charges. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live in west chester with the latest details in this case, alex. >> reporter: on the county side this is a a case about the degree of the only child who left his fat ter quote rot but defendant's attorney says this is actually a story about a son who took his father in and honored his final wishes. it is in way for a world war two veteran to go, according to district attorney tom hogan. >> he was covered with bed sores, he was covered with

human waste. he had died from neglect. >> reporter: that is where police say the the father also eduardo brian had been living for two years despite his son being told that the 90 year-old needed 24 hour acute care. >> he didn't supply not the just acute medical care but really any medical care. he didn't prescribe, he did not get the required prescription medication for his father, particularly l.a. six. >> reporter: o'brien's attorney says it is what his client's father wanted saying in 2011, ed's 91 year-old father asked he had towed spare him death by nursing home and ed agreed. neighbors agreed that the care was good. >> the father was being cared for? >> yes, i definitely did. >> reporter: but district attorney says it only added pain to the veteran's last days. >> the real tragedy here is that there were plenty of places that the victim could have gone to be cared for.

>> reporter: one of those places in particular southeastern pennsylvania veterans center which will serve veterans regardless of their ability to pay. despite being found 50-pound lighter then when he entered his son's home, o'brien's attorney does say that his client cooked for his father three meals a day. reporting live from chester county alexandria hoff cbs-3 "eyewitness news". mother of the brandon tait brown has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. her son was shot and killed by philadelphia police in december. as "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers tells us tonight suit seeks damages and reforms. >> it has been over four months since 26 year-old brandon kate brown was killed, shot to death by police wednesday his family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in his name where they will seek millions in damages. >> i do believe that my son died driving while black. >> reporter: tait brown was pulled over here on the 6600

block of frankford avenue on december 15th around 2:45 a.m. police say he had a busted taillight. the main controversy in this case centers on what happened next. police say while outside his car tait-brown reached for a gun inside the car the officers supported by police leadership said they had in choice but to shoot him. it is something that district attorney seth williams agreed with when after reviewing surveillance video like this one he announce that had there would be no criminal charges against the officers in the case. there is existing another surveillance video in this case. public has in the seen it but investigators did show it to the family's attorney. it shows tait brown in the back of his vehicle moving from taillight to taillight when he is shot and killed. it never shows tait brown reaching inside his car for a gun. >> we have a big problem with the credibility of the police officers and the the police department in this case and part of our goal is to bring this evidence forward to the public. >> reporter: another goal in the suit is to have a common

pleas court oversee newly establish police add advisory commission. the it was create by mayor nut tore implement changes in the philadelphia police department, something tait brown's family arguing is desperately needed. matt rivers for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". right now new protests are underway in baltimore as city counts down to a second night of curfew. so far protests over unexplain death of freddie gray in police custody are peaceful. authorities have made 35 arrests since curfew was imposed tuesday night and orioles faced the white socks in the empty camden yard this afternoon. fans were nod at midded because of safety concerns. also pennsylvania is sending 300 state troop tours baltimore to help with peace keeping efforts. >> they should be arriving this weekend. we are sending 300 troopers to help baltimore force as i think any good neighbor would they requested assistance from frustrates.

and we have agreed to give that. obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the folks in baltimore, maryland and we hope we will get this behind us a as quickly as possible. >> the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley will have more from baltimore tonight including on going efforts to keep the peace there coming up on "eyewitness news". at rest in baltimore is big topic of a national conference underway here in philadelphia mayor michael nutter and fellow mayor from his 40 cities are talking about ways to end violence in african-american communities. these leaders are members of the cities united and they want to stop violence by addressing poverty and lack of educational and job opportunities in the community. >> we believe one of the greatest challenges in america is growing sense of hepp lessness that too many of our young people are feeling. >> the president himself said yesterday in the congress would actually put in place much of his a gend, we could deal with issues that we are seeing on the ground in

baltimore, in cleveland in philadelphia minneapolis. >> reporter: cities united was launched by mayor nutter and mayor of new orleans four years ago. a philadelphia police officer is recovering tonight after his patrol car slammed into a guardrail earlier this morning. police say that the officer was responding to a robbery call when that crash happened on krewstown road in bustleton. it was just before 5:00 this morning. we are told the officer was treated for cuts from an air bag that deployed. he also suffered some knee pain. welshing lights are back on at casino. >> but will they stay on? uncertainty that lies ahead for the new owner kate. it is a beautiful summer-like night here in philadelphia but that is ball to change. we are talking science with the kid it is science week we will have more from wynfield coming up. plus a beloved children's book series, visited a philadelphia hospital for an important lessons. we will tell you how bernstein

restored to the former revel casino. glenn straub reached a tentative deal today with an energy company. straub has been charged $5,000 a day because his fire detection and suppression systems were down. but, casino isn't totally out of the dark just yet straub says he won't be opening for business for at least a portion of the summer. a police award ceremony in chester county was especially touching for one father. >> tredyffrin township a father who lost his son to an heroin overdose, officers who arrested a suspect who sold those drugs to his son. those officers were also honored with award for those arrests, and ed fin says his son was a year clean of heroin but he relapsed and purchased $10 worth of the drug and it claim his life. >> the thing of it is is awareness. and what we do about awareness

just a beautiful day to do anything but kate, we know you have been talking science. >> we have been talking science on this beautiful day chris. you have to love a job that says i will take mobil weather lab and be outside all day. i'm loving my job today. people here at wynfield library write loving their jobs as well. franklin institute came in. they had a science fair for the the kid. this is a great community library. st. joes student volunteer to clean up ground in front of the library. just i great community gathering place and great thing for the kid. lets look at what they have got to experience today. franklin institute science festival going on all week long and we had all partners in here. we had audubon jefferson chemical heritage foundation among others, chemistry robotics we had biology here today, we had lots of experiment for kid to partake in and they were so excited. it warms my heart to see these kid especially young girls so interested in science in stem

the schuylkill river and boat house row and water very calm skullers on the river enjoying their brilliant sunshine and warm afternoon temperatures. something we have in the seen much this spring. temperatures will continue to stay mile throughout this evening and then changes move in. take a look we have two components part one is this coastal low that is developing nor'easter we have been talking about for past several days. part is two upper level low pressure system that will combine with this system and kind of kick it out a little bit more out to sea. thinks our dominant low pressure system and one that will keep it cool, keep that on shore flow and that moist weather, in our region for the next couple of days. so one thing we will be seeing is cooler temperatures over next couple days, more cloud moving in thursday, and even more on friday, gusty wind certainly by friday and a few isolated showers in the forecast. so not a significant impact, but it will put a damper on the weather. thursday a stray shower, temperatures in the 60's and

then as this moves off shore we have an on shore flow thursday into friday and that means cool temperatures. friday will be in the upper 50's lower 60's with more cloud and more wind and then it all moves away saturday, partly sunny skies temperatures soaring through 60's. we have a few days that are in the so great and then we can end looks terrific. overnight partly cloudy low 53. high tomorrow 68 degrees. we have a chance of the stray sure but in most of us seeing dry conditions. so that is good news about tomorrow. lets take you hour by hour, 8:00 a.m. 60. very nice start to the day. lunch outside for sure with the good deal of sunshine and then by the afternoon at 2:00, 68 dinner time 63 and any evening activities looking good with a temperature of 58 degrees. looking ahead on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven day forecast thursday 68. friday cooler. saturday high temperature is 68 degrees, again with more sunshine. sunshine on sunday and mid 70's. the great day to be outdoors.

great day for broad street run as well in the morning. monday 80. tuesday, 81. and then by wednesday a few showers, the temperatures 77 degrees. you see how we are transitioning out of april and into may and so far, i don't think may is going to disappoint but many people have been saying to me and hitting me up on twitter will we jump right from winter to re. >> i do. >> i guess we will see. >> kate, thanks. >> you bet. >> we will be right back.

there's over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. jim kenney and tony williams are fighting over public schools versus charters. i think they're both wrong...it's making sure they all get a good education. teachers should have their contracts respected. they also should be held accountable. and it's wrong philadelphia gets less school funding than other parts of pennsylvania. i'll work with harrisburg to change that. but if they refuse i'll take them to federal court. as mayor i'll do what's right for them.

cardinals ruined major league debut of sammy gonzales. card scored early and often. gonzales allowed seven runs in two innings and red bird beat phillies 11 -five. baseball history in baltimore, orioles and white socks played in an empty stadium because of concerns over riots this week. some fans looked through gates of the camden yard to see the game. orioles scored six times in the first inning and beat chicago eight-two. baltimore, will play their next three games in tampa although they will be the home team in tampa. >> it is interesting to see those photos of the baseball diamond, empty fans. >> erie, i have never even anything like it. >> hearing the ball hit myth and bat was completely different experience today. >> thanks very much. >> we
