>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now at 6 o'clock four construction workers are injured an driver is dead after an accident at a work zone on the pennsylvania turnpike. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. this accident happened just past the bensalem exit number 351. it's raising concerns tonight about drivers safety in those work zones. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson joins us along the turnpike in bensalem. he's got the very latest. steve. >> reporter: natasha police and officials tell me the driver in this case was pronounced dead at the scene. meanwhile as you mentioned four workers affected by this crash, four of them injured two of them sustained minor injuries, they were taken to the hospital treated and released and another two in that group sustained serious injuries. one of them had to undergo surgery this afternoon.

we're checking back forup dates. in the meantime this comes just a month into a major safety campaign from the pennsylvania turnpike commission telling drivers to slow down especially when they are in these work zones. for hours the only traffic left on this busy stretch of the pennsylvania turnpike didn't even amount to one car. officials say it happened shortly before 5:30 saturday morning. police say this car traveling eastbound near the bensalem interchange entered a construction zone, struck a construction vehicle injuring four construction workers. the driver of that car was killed. turnpike officials tell cbs3 "eyewitness news" the cause has yet to be determined but they say speed and distraction are likely to blame. >> we need our motorists to be aware that there are lives that are out there only inches from these people then need to slow down and be cautious for the safety of all of our folks. >> reporter: saturday's accident is the second work zone wreck this week on the

turnpike. in a span of five days, five workers have been injured.e of a major crackdown by state police. corresponding campaign from the turnpike commission and slowing drivers and saving workers. on monday, the turnpike commission will start airing this commercial. >> if everyone slowed down to see my dad but no one slowed down to prevent it. >> dangerous, you know. negligent. and people got to slow down. >> reporter: commuter rich has taken the turnpike five days a week for the past four years. >> unless you know it's like an actual work work zone with the police car there people don't slow down. >> reporter: this driver says the solution is simple. >> just do what the signs tell you to do. just obey the signs and you'll be fine. >> that was steve patterson reporting on the latest there. also now a two car crash in west philadelphia, it leaves two people dead and sends a third person to the hospital. the accident happened after 2:00 this morning on the corner of 62nd and walnut streets.

investigators say one of the vehicles flipped over and caught fire after the crash. so far police haven't filed any charges. they say their investigation is ongoing. now turning to our weather, it's a beautiful day in the area and it looks like blue skies ahead for the rest of the weekend. meteorologist katie fehlinger has our first look at the forecast. >> good news for a change. if you did like today you're going to love what we have coming up up down the road. starting things off with a quick peek at storm scan3. always a good place to start when there's active weather. one pocket of showers developing in the last hour or two and that was courtesy of a very weak trough trying to dig in. nothing more than a couple of clouds for most of us and that's what you're still finding out here in the live neighborhood network outside palmyra cove nature park, the city sky scape off in the distance holding at 73 degrees. nice and mild. this is the first day of the year that we typically average

out to about 70 degrees for a daytime high. so pleasant sunset coming our way in your first forecast, just a few clouds later tonight and through the overnight we expect to drop down generally into the lower 50's which is pretty typical. as we look ahead to our area headlines we're in for nice warm weather. we're going to discuss why a little later in the show. so while we generally have a mostly quiet pattern one little hiccup we'll have to discuss and that comes in the form avenue cold front by midweek. i'll tell you the impact about that, when it gets here that was good stuff and more importantly we'll be talking temperatures in the minutes ahead. natasha back to you. >> thank you so much. a celebration in britain over the birth of a princess. the duke and duchess of cambridge took their new daughter home from the hospital today. no name just yet but a lot of excitement. cbs news correspondent susan mcginnis takes to us london. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: the duke and duchess of cambridge thrilled crowds as they introduced the new royal princess to the world.

kate cradled her baby girl as she and prince william left saint mary's hospital in london just nine hours after the birth. >> it's a girl it's a girl. >> reporter: prince william was at kate's side in the delivery room as she gave birth to the couple's second child after two and a half hours of labor. it's a moment prince william wanted to share with his son. the 21 month old future king waved to crowds as he went to meet his baby sister for the first time. the royal family of four is expected to spend a couple days here at kensington palace their london home before retreating to their country estate up north. the most loyal royal fans had camped out for weeks to witness the birth of the royal baby. >> it's a girl and it's fantastic. every woman and every little girl loves a princess. >> reporter: a golden easel in front of buckingham palace announced the birth saturday morning. queen elizabeth spent the day in pink to celebrate the birth of her fifth great grandchild. the still unnamed princess is

fourth in line to the british throne behind grandfather prince charles, father prince william and big brother prince george. in london, susan mcginnis for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> she is beautiful. so, what name do you want for will and kate's baby girl? connect with us on facebook and on twitter at cbsphilly and make your voice heard. make sure you use hashtag cbs3 chat. now, thousands from all around the can country today they gathered in baltimore in the name of freddie gray. right now protesters are uniting for what many are calling a victory rally near city hall. this is a live picture that of crowd gathering. so far the demonstration is peaceful. more than a hundred protester marched to the rally from the gilmore homes housing project where gray was arrested. the 25-year-old died from a severe neck injury while in police custody. yesterday six police officers were arrested and charged in connection with his death bringing joy to the community after days of unrest. >> freddie gray, because it's

symbolic of all of the black men in this country who have been treated unfairly by our police and we know that police reform is on the way. >> all six charged officers have posted bail. they include sewell new jersey native edward nero. he was a washington township firefighter. now in wilmington, the investigation continues into a suspicious fire at a vacant building. fire crews raced to the 100 block of bancroft mills road at about 1:30 this morning and found huge flames at the vacant bancroft mills complex. the historic bancroft mill was compromised in the fire. no injuries have been reported. also five people are hospitalized following this accident involving a military convoy from fort dix. it happened on the new jersey turnpike in hamilton township mercer county late last night. three military members in the humvee were hurt. the driver was ejected and

flown to helene fuld with serious injuries. the other two victims have nonlife-threatening injuries. two people in a black nissan also suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. police meantime located a truck that was stolen in south philadelphia this week. it was recovered empty on the 1100 block of rising sun of a early this morning. the search still continues for the suv -- for the u-haul, that is, truck that was stolen in hunting park. police say this man was one of three suspects who stole it. while there are no credible homeland security threats relating to the truck, authorities wanted to find them as soon as possible. stay with everyone. coming up next on "eyewitness news," why are all these people here pulling an airplane? we're going to show you what this is all about and the cause it helps to support. katie. >> and natasha, we are certainly in for some nice warmth. not just for the rest of the weekend but well into next week. we'll talk about the pattern that's unfolding.

was there. >> you guys trod pull a plane. >> reporter: when a plane is in need of pulling you call in the dream team. all 25 of them. >> teams of 20 people pulling a plain 50 feet. this year they added a little extra gasoline tots plane so it's a little bit harder. >> reporter: the seventh annual plane pull at the atlantic aviation terminal brought out supporters of the ronald mcdonald house to not only pull their own weight but that of a 75,000-pound jet. the winning team pulled furthest fastest. all right, guys this plane pulling is harder than it looks. the team that came here they had to raise $2,500 to participate. that will go to help at least 2,000 families living with seriously ill kids. like wes cosh bane from indiana but spends six week at a time in philadelphia for his mom for experimental treatment. >> i was diagnosed with cancer leukemia about a squeak before my freshman year. i'm a junior in high school. >> reporter: he says the ronald mcdonald house has

hicks from texas. he's versatile. he plays all the line backing positions and special teams. both players speak dag about how they felt about being drafted by the birds. >> a feeling i had when i left here, i was like man this program is different like the coach is different, the way they do things and when i left, i just wanted to be a part of it so bad. >> you obviously have no clue what's going to happen. you know and i was extremely anxious but is the team that was pursuing me the most so it makes sense. >> and today the eagles finished up the draft trading their fourth round pick to the lions for a third round pick next year. they picked a pair of corners. in the seventh round with that final pick that drafted 6-foot nine brian maholoc from boston college. big guy. we'll hear from chip kelly later tonight. after losing four in a row

the phillies trying to get a win against the marlins in miami. cole hamels on the hill and hasn't been a good day for hamels second inning martin prado a three run homer to left. marlins jump out to a three-nothing lead. then in the third more marlins. baker scores and that will make it four-nothing. stanton adding a sac fly in the fourth to make it five-nothing and that's the score. it's actually six-nothing in the seventh inning of the game. huge fight tonight. some calling it the fight of the century when floyd mayweather takes on manny pacquiao in las vegas. total revenue is expected to reach a record $400 million. tickets on average 10,000. >> wow. is that all? >> that's all. >> just a mere 10,000. >> clearly i would be looking at that on television. >> but even that, isn't it just a hundred bucks just to watch it. >> i think it is.

>> it is. >> and that's a record, too. >> unbelievable. >> look who brought the sunshine. yay! >> you're welcome. i always like taking credit for days like today. >> i would. >> when it rains i'm like i'm just the messenger. looks like this is going to keep on going. we are setting ourselves up for some absolutely gorgeous weather in the days ahead. probably one of the warmest weeks we've had in months. >> nice. >> plus sunshine almost every day. you cannot beat it. so, today was g we'll get you out there, we'll show you how things looked but i really think that you're going to like how things start to shape up here later on. let's go ahead take you outside. we'll show you how it's looking right now down the shore just a couple of clouds. you know, you had a few clouds rolling in courtesy of the little trough digging in early today. it did touch off a shower or two in a couple spots mainly across west central new jersey even into bucks county but over all all is clear all is good and we're looking ahead

to high pressure generally inl for many, many days ahead. so another look for you. we have the local zoom on storm scan3. little blip on the radar right there. generally it is a handful of clouds for most of you and we haven't had to deal with wet weather at all. you can see some of the cloud cover when we throw the satellite over top of this where that came from in the first place. meanwhile high pressure is taking control here and it looks like it's going to have the opportunity to keep control for most of the next seven days. even though there's a lot of activity going on in the atmosphere off to the west, one thing that we can point out to you is one little pocket of wet weather here north of the canadian border over the montana border here into the canadian prairie. that turns into our next cold front and even that cold front is going to be kind of wimpy in terms of what its impact will be. everything else off to the west gets stuck because of the movement of the atmosphere. there's going to be essential al roadblock that sets up. so, that means really nice weather for us as a result. for now we're looking at

gorgeous weather for tomorrow, full sunshine, nice and warm for you, great grilling weather, soccer weather, you know any kind of activity you have got going on throughout the day. you're looking good here. so, get outside. if you don't have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy tomorrow you will have many more opportunities down the road. so, here's what's happening. high pressure again keeping control right through monday. another beautiful start to the week for you here. low to even mid 80's both monday and tuesday. but here comes that front we just showed you all the way up over canada, that starts to drop in as you look ahead to tuesday and that's when our next chance for wet weather comes along. meanwhile allergy sufferers listen up. this is going to be a heck of a week for you because we keep those pollen levels awfully high where we don't have wet weather to wash it away. make sure your meds are ready to go, the level is high especially monday and tuesday at least for the next three days. i have a feeling they'll stay high for most of the next seven days. that said off to a mild start

though right now. you're currently at 73 degrees in reading in philly in trenton, down the shore it is a lot cooler by comparison. and more than anything it's because we still have an on shore wind flow here helping to just bring in the influence of the cooler open ocean water. that means you're stuck in the 50's but it's still pretty decent evening for folks at the shore points and it will stay that way. here's another live look. more blue sky in the distance ago we overlook the genesis bay outside cape may courthouse in middle township high school specifically where there's an observation site located and we're in at 50 degrees there. getting a little bit warmer the further inland you go. big race tomorrow and that is the broad street run and i got to tell you this is great running weather. full sunshine, 8:30 in the morning you're already at 64 degrees and we just keep that theme going throughout the rest of the afternoon. so for now we'll back it up to the overnight. just a handful of clouds. comfortably cool. you know, you might be able to get away with those windows contractor tonight because the

wind is nice and calm and you don't have to worry about any humidity. good sleeping weather really. 53 degrees the nighttime low. we look ahead to tomorrow where the high spikes to 80 degrees, good stuff, 10 solid degrees above the average but you want the good stuff. let me show you the seven day. this is the really good stuff. check this out. 84 under sunshine on monday, a real dose of mid june really there. on tuesday we're shooting for 82. that's when that front comes along, brings in just a quick little shower or thunderstorm, nothing major with that and it barely knocks our temperatures back. only talking upper 70's on wednesday then we rebound for a three day stretch of 80 degrees. when is the last time we've had a nice forecast like this? i can't tell you. >> i can't either. >> i'm going to look back in the books here. >> it will probably take you a while to find it. >> i have a feeling it l i'll work on that. >> okay: appreciate that. it could not have been a more perfect day for the rittenhouse row spring festival it kicked off at noon between broad and 19th. more than a hundred booths

were open for business serving tasty treats and cocktails. there was plenty of family fun, live music and local artists had their work out for display. very nice. prom season for young people around the area. this is a very special prom at children's hospital today. 250 patients walked the red carpet at the fourth annual oncology prom. this year's theme was hawaiian. their dresses and suits were all a welcome change from hospital gowns and the young people enjoyed a very glamorous day today. >> just means a lot, it really -- right? today when we got here he said mom we're not here for mood work, right? and i said no, we're just here for fun and being able to just let him be a four-year-old and have a really good time and dance and just be a kid is really awesome. >> that was really sweet. everybody looked lovely as well. today was a memorable social event for the children, their families and their friends. we're glad everybody had a great time out there. multiple sclerosis affects

there's over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. jim kenney and tony williams are fighting over public schools versus charters. i think they're both wrong...it's making sure they all get a good education. teachers should have their contracts respected. they also should be held accountable. and it's wrong philadelphia gets less school funding than other parts of pennsylvania. i'll work with harrisburg to change that. but if they refuse i'll take them to federal court. as mayor i'll do what's right for them.
