you can see it the is still an active police scene as police came together to gather evidence there. we have live team three coverage. we will begin we "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt live at west oak lane, david? >> reporter: jessica, there are a lot of moving parts to this story. thinks where everything ended on 19th and colonial. let me back out of the way so we can take that live look. crime scene unit just pulled up about 15 minutes ago. they are working the scene to determine the last few minutes, after this man collapsed. this beat up maroon koran colonial street marks the end of a violent afternoon, one that sent four police officers and suspect to the hospital. police say officers got a call about a car accident on chew street, and they found this maroon car and officers tried to help the man out of the car he became combative a according to officers driving off and injuring three officers with his car. >> i think maybe he was on

some medication on something because he had surgery or something. >> reporter: wayne whiteys still waiting to hear the facts about a friend he knows as blue. police say minutes later at stenton and ogontz, two other office are opened fire on the suspect. detective say that he kept driving and made to it colonial street where he parked the the car got out and then collapsed near these stairs. >> he was just laying there. >> reporter: margarita rodolph lives across the street from where the man collapsed. when she ran outside other neighbors told her what happened. >> i think it is always about the the cops. i really company. >> reporter: couple of other neighbors who didn't want to be on camera told us that they recognized the suspect. they say he had been in the area for a while. he did not seem to cause any problems in the past but one friend that i spoke to insist that he has a medical problem obviously, we will continue to follow this story to find out more about that suspect. we are live on colonial, david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". our team coverage

continues with pat ciarrocchi, she's live at einstein medical center where all of the injured officers and that suspect were all taken. pat? >> reporter: well, jessica the worst call that the police officers can get is that there is an officer down and in this case it was four officers down. the injuries according to the mayor all officers are pretty badly banged up but those injuries are not life threatening. the it was between 2:30 and 3:00 this afternoon that ambulances converged on einstein all four officers, and the suspect who was wounded by police were in side those ambulances, the the mayor, the police commissioner and first deputy spoke to the media late this afternoon, emphasizing the dangers that police face. >> the individual used a car as a weapon against the police officers, and injured them. they are banged up. they have scrapes on their legs arms, and i think one officer was pretty sore

wedged under a tractor trailer. she spoke with "eyewitness news" reporter steve paterson. >> i was just terrified i thought we were dead. >> reporter: when 78 year-old, nylon duka she knew she and her daughter were in trouble. >> i thought after the third banging, that this is it. >> reporter: by the fourth she began praying for a quick death. >> as long as god just takes me and i don't have to lay in bed suffering, you know, i'm fine with it. >> reporter: but duka and her daughter katrina moaning are survivors. at 2:30 monday afternoon police say moaning was driving south on the pennsylvania turnpike. suddenly, at mile marker 25, their car struck by a merging ups truck, sending them flying under the belly of the 18 wheeler. duka says one of the wheels was inches from killing her daughter. >> about that far from her. if i could have have reached because i was story could have touched tire and it was through the door.

>> reporter: after the rescue police told the woman one thing that very well saved them and so important to her that she had it frame her prized possession, a mazda miata gift from her late husband, and to the ground to avoid death. it took crews about two hours to free her daughter from that crash. she remains in the the hospital but it is expected to make a full recovery. >> this brings it home. >> reporter: as 78 years old she says that she has a new lease on life. >> there is a reason so turf try, whatever i can do to help people. >> reporter: she said she wanted to start by sharing her story. in bucks county, steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". amazing. after several days of summer-like temperatures it business to cool back down. meteorologist kathy orr is live on the cbs-3 sky deck with her first forecast, kathy. >> temperatures peaked today, guess contact we're talking about upper 80's in the delaware valley, at least it is breezy a and humidity lower

than it was earlier today. the signs of change are moving in. now lets take a look at what we are looking at as far as temperatures are concerned. philadelphia so far, 87 degrees. the warmest day of the year the record is 91 setback in 1881. not that far off. right now in philadelphia 85. eighty-six the atlantic city at the airport. eighty-eight in millville. eighty-six in dover. look what is coming, a cold front, and then behind it temperatures in the 50's, buffalo, new york 52. cleveland 58. and chicago 55. and this is the the weather that is in our near future. you can see cold front moving across the part of central pennsylvania with cloud cover but the shower activity stays to the north. if you are going out this evening, maybe phillies game by 7:00 o'clock we're talking about breezy conditions, 80 degrees. 9:00 o'clock 74. by 11:00 p.m. 69 degrees with partly cloudy skies. coming up we will talk about the fire danger on the rise, feeling more like may and we will check to see if there is

reporter, cleve bryan is live in camden tonight to tell us what is behind the layoffs cleve. >> reporter: chris, i'm at dudley family school where people are starting to now file into the building for a special advisory board meet to go discuss the layoffs. the the reason is very simple, this year and last year, the district is losing students. >> it is heart breaking. >> reporter: cam a den teachers like brittany duncan are fired up about another round of playoffs in the district. >> it effects those people more than then it does me but it breaks my heart and a lot of the kids are very sad. >> reporter: one of the districts sent out 160 layoff notices, 89 for those cut for budget reasons and 71 employees dismissed for poor performance. last year the district laid off 335 staff members causing a sea of students to flood streets of camden and protest outside the administration building. what do you expect tonight for this meeting. >> there will be a lot of anxiety. >> reporter: state appointed superintendent rouhani yard

says the district is losing students and a 71 percent of camden students go to publish schools. next year will be about 58 percent with the rest going to charter and renaissance schools. >> i do deeply believe that our schools will be adequately staffed and resourced going forward. the impact this year was far less substantial then last year. >> reporter: some parent are fighting the the migration of students away from district schools. >> let our children say in the traditional schools like our parent are fighting for and then we can have a fair shake. then we have choice. the right now we don't have no choice. we are being kicked out of our public schools and forced in to renaissance schools. >> reporter: i asked the superintendent how will these layoffs impact class sizes in the district? he said they should remain the same about ten students to everyone teacher. live from camden, i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> tough news there thanks very much. still to come on "eyewitness news" at 5:00 a bolt bus catches fire and explode in the middle of rush hour and all caught on camera.

the only living move survivor and top investigators tasked to examine that deadly confrontation. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter is live in that neighborhood where the scars from that date 30 years ago remain walt? >> reporter: jessica, it was 5:27 p.m. on may 13th 1985 that the bomb was dropped right on this block behind me the 6200 block of osage avenue and as you point out the the scars to this neighborhood, and to the soul of our city, still have not fully healed. >> we felt that house shake and it never occurred to me, at least that they drop a bomb on us. >> reporter: ramona africa, the only living survivor, remembers the moment that the bomb dropped. and when the fire ignited by that bomb, a fire that officials let burn finally ended, six adult move members five of their children are dead and an entire neighborhood destroyed over an

eviction turned ter liz wrong. while the investigation commission called move an armed and dangerous group that threatened and terrified neighbors from their fortified row house with the bunk are on the roof move members maintained that the bloodshed was revenge for an august august 191,978th confrontation in which a officer died but no move members were shot. final decision to drop a bomb >> obviously we know what happened but there were efforts to try to prevent any kind of violence. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter a community leader in 1985 was among many who unsuccessfully pushed for a

we can continue to follow breaking news this afternoon four injured philadelphia police officers are recovering after authorities say they were hit by a fleeing suspect in olney. police say this all started at seventh and chew in olney where suspect hit three officers with his car. a fourth officer was hit and suspect was shot at stenton and ogontz. suspect drove a short distance to the 1900 block of colonial in west oak lane where he was arrested. no word yet on the suspect's condition. we will keep you updated. yes, we will. in the meantime it was a steamy, hot day a lot like summer out there today. >> the hottest day of the year temperatures still climbing in some areas near record warmth today but that

light is getting a land two. only warm spot ocean water temperature is flirting with 60 degrees. we have not had much rain since may began late april is dry as well. look at the monthly deficit. allentown and philadelphia more than an inch below average. trenton close to an inch. wilmington an inch below normal and rain and that is creating an issue for tomorrow. fire weather watch has been put in effect for all of new jersey with an enhanced fire risk. we're talking about low humidity, and we will be seeing breezy conditions, gusts to 30 miles an her, dry brush and we have not had any tease event rain since april 21st. we are talking about three weeks, that is why risk will be increased. during the day tomorrow temperatures will be in the 60's, close to 70. win will continue. wind settles down for your thursday with plenty of unshine but still lower 70's, it will be cool and warming up a little bit by friday with mostly sunny skies chance of rain over the weekend. here's how it will feel, right

passengers on a bolt bus are lucky to be alive after their bus explodes moments have after they get off. bus was traveling there new york to boston last night but about 15 miles outside of boston someone in the pasting car let the driver know smoke was coming from the back of the bus and that is when the driver quickly pulled over. >> you see like, flames coming from the sides of the windows in the back, and it was a little bit of panic. no one in the front knew what was going on but we're on fire we're on fire. >> reporter: amazingly no one was injured. bus had broken down just hours earlier and stopped in connecticut for repairs. the insurance institute of highway safety has tested another round of suv's and result show that they are not created equal. of the seven reek also tested three achieved good or acceptable ratings.

stairs. i had a chance to speak to neighbors. they tell me they heard commotion. they came outside to see him lying down. now let's talk about the police officers. there were four that were taken to the hospital, to make sure. we're told they have non-life threatening injuries. mayor nutter and deputy commissioner richard rot were on scene and gave a statement a short time ago. >> unfortunately, an indication of some of the dangers that philadelphia police officers encountered out on the streets of our city, frying to do their job and pennsylvania make sure city is safe. all four injured by one individual, in a car and used a car as a weapon. >> he hit several cars a along the way when he finally end up stopping we have reports that there were several pedestrians that had to jump out of the way as well. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00 we will hear from a friend of the suspect he says that his friend was on some makes, he says he was in the

anna pose i vows to ask the hit and run driver who killed her daughter theresa december 23rd accident happened on the 8100 block of state road, nearly five months later, the case remains unsolve. >> this is only physical evidence that we have on that case right now. >> reporter: philadelphia's accident investigation district has one piece of evident, remnants from the headlight of the older model tow truck, one piece of the unfinished puts will. >> often times we look at the the piece of the car left behind and that is all we have to go by. >> reporter: investigators still dealing with the hit and run that killed david alycia in kensington. surveillance video captured impact that killed four year-old abdul wilson in southwest philadelphia. hit and run accidents happening hours apart on april 13th. >> we have to pull over and call 911. you cannot leave the scene. >> reporter: police recovered both cars in these cases just beginning of the tireless work that goes into solving the crime. >> we have to establish what we call driver, who was operating the vehicle

at the time of the crash. >> it is very hard to accept. >> reporter: for anna pose i like other family members whose lives were snuffed away it becomes a grief stricken waiting game for justice. >> why can't that be me? why can't that be, somebody called me or telling me that they found the person that took my daughter's life away. >> reporter: police say so far this year there have been four fatal hit and run accidents they are still investigating all of them. minimum sentence for drivers convicted in fatal hit and runs is three years behind bars. we're live from southwest philadelphia natasha brown for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> natasha, thanks very much. day of the swimming hole turns deadly in sads bury town should after one person drowns there police were called to a creek on old wilmington road this morning by another swim shore said the victim didn't resurface after jumping from the bridge. surviving swimmer tried to

save the victim but was pulled under by him. police say there was strong under toe where that victim drowned. due to the under toe, of the waterfall being located fire and e ms personnel felt that it would have been a safety issue for either of those personnel to make an attempt to go in the water. >> rescuers did try to put poles into the water hoping to recover the victim's body but they were unsuccessful. so far victim has not been identified. authorities are searching for the occupants of the two vehicles who were shooting at each other in west philadelphia. that shooting happened after 10:00 this morning on 63rd street and lansdowne avenue. sanitation worker who was picking up trash witnessed the and then called police. investigators recovered one shell casing at the scene and no injuries were reported. this woman is wanted by philadelphia police for allegedly using stolen credit card. she was caught on surveillance video making purchases at

i'm lynne abraham. when i became philadelphia's da, child victims had to face a judge ...a jury...the public... and testify eye to eye with their attackers. it wasn't right. so i got a constitutional amendment passed allowing children to testify remotely. i'm running for mayor for the same reason -- our children should come first. jim kenney and tony williams are fighting over public schools versus charters. i disagree. we have to improve education for all of our children.

it is time toe check the philadelphia jobs market report. >> cbs business analyst jill schlesinger is here with more. >> reporter: it is national nurses week an opportunity to highlight this rapidly growing field, with chronic conditions on rise higher demand from baby boomers and increasing focus on preventive care, the need has jump. it is projected to grow by 19 percent, faster than average for all occupations. salaries are also expect to rise. nurses here in the philadelphia area earn a median annual wage of over $74,000. many employers also offered flexible work scheduled about 20 percent work part-time, as well as child care, educational benefits and bonuses. but there and there are three education paths you can take toward becoming a nurse. bachelor's degree or associate degree or a diploma from a nursing program.

tech companies are hoping to change the way we all drive but testing that technology has a not come without a few fender benders. in surprise there. >> as ben tracie reports new information on collisions involving these test cars have some people concerned. >> reporter: more than half dozen tech companies are testing their self driving cars on the opened road but new data shows there have have been bumps along the way. the california department of motor vehicles say four out of 48 improved test cars have been involved in accidents in september. but what the agency started to keep track. a according to an a associated press report, one involved a delphi automotive test vehicle.
