engers and five crew members was on its way to new york city when it crashed in port richmond. five people were killed, 65 others were hurt. as you can imagine the accident has shut rail service, shut down rail service to new york and philadelphia we have live team three coverage for you with reporters covering every angle of the crash and aftermath this morning. we will start off with nicole brewer at that scene in port richmond nicole. >> reporter: erika, at this point it has been difficult to get images of that train wreck here on the ground, because as you can tell, they have several hundreds yard away from where the train actually crash, but if you take a a look you can see utility pole ripped from the ground, just unearthed and wires are now hanging in the balance presumably as a result of this deadly derailment, killing five people. we have chopper 3hd flying overhead as we speak it shows horrific scene out here in port richmond just a few hundred yard from where we're standing at the the intersection of frankford and

sedgley avenue. you can see those, seven cars, including an engine were all involved in this wreck just a mangled mess, in all, 243 people object board that amtrak train number 188 coming from washington d.c., heading to new york city. it apparently jumped tracks at frankford junction, the area where this crash occur. there is a large curve involved here. it sent 65 people to area hospitals. six of them in critical condition, at this hour once again, five people have been confirmed dead, as you can imagine, it was an all hand on deck kind of a scene late last night as local state and federal authorities all came together here. the at one point we are told by mayor michael nutter that 200 police officers were here at the scene including philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey, and also joined by deputy commissioner of the philadelphia fire department, jesse wilson. >> we have slightly more than 200 officers that have responded to the scene once this occurred and we realized

the magnitude of it we held over four to 12:00 unit, called in our midnight shift early. >> i have never seen anything so devastating. they are in pretty bad shape. they have completely derailed from the tracks, destroyed compeen destroyed and i don't want to speculate on the cause, but it is a devastating scene. >> reporter: again, from the air our camera captured the chaos as emergency reek also flooded the scene transporting injured passengers treated for everything from concussions and severe lacerations broken bones, and many of them treated for shock. the passengers on the ground were doing whatever they could to get off that train. we did speak to the mother and son who made it off safely. they descrlike to be on that train and of course, mayhem that followed. >> we were just, on the train and all of a sudden it started to shake and we were in the front seat and this huge red suitcase just came flying at

me. our train was on its side, so it pushed me on to the side of the train it hit my chest and i have a few fractured ribs, i'm a nurse but you know, i tried to help, anybody who is there, there is very many injured people on the train and they were very upset. my son went back and got everybody off our one car he helped them out, there was a small opening in the door and we were able to get out. >> thank goodness they were able to make it to safety, unfortunately, again, many people did not, five confirmed fatalities, in this train wreck and we are told cadaver dogs are still on the scene searching for potential victims. so bigmorning is how and why did this all happen and are all 243 passengers accounted for these questions have yet to be answered but once again, as we look overhead here at this crash site we have local state, and federal authorities

on the the scene investigating, trying to figure out just what happened here in port richmond. we will send it back to you in the studio. >> i traveled that area lot that looks like a northeast regional train that traveled slower than high speed acela train. ntsb and other officials have have work to do. >> so many questions to answered and all seven trains are expect, toppling over good off the track. >> second count, the the hospitals were ready. >> staff treated dozens of victims after ambulance as arrived, "eyewitness news" reporter just continue finch yins us where a number of those victims were taken just continue. >> reporter: erika and ukee, a large number indeed, we have spoken to several first responders over course of the night early morning from fire fighters police and eers stepping up, they all tell us there are several injured. we now know for sure that at least 140 people are hospitalized or cared for at hospitals. we know six people in critical condition and of course five

people who passed away. many of those injured brought here to hahnemann. lets take to you video of transports we saw here overnight, hahnemann now has 25 people at least, caring for. these numbers have changed throughout the course of the night and morning. einstein medical center, caring for ten patients, aria frankford 26 patients, aria torresdale 30 patients and temple university telling us they are caring for 54 patients. their injuries a wide range from minor to very serious. they are all aboard that train, amtrak 188 traveling from d.c. to new york city with 243 people on board, five of whom were staff but something happened at frankford junction trains off the track there. several cars off the rails tumbling over resulting in a wide range of injuries. we have heard throughout the night and morning we spoke to a doctor who saw it all first hand, lets take a listen. >> there were some people with

bad internal injuries and damage from the impact. loss of blood loss of blood pressure. there were two or three that were very, very significant. other injuries we saw there were definitely concussions people with bruises with cuts. >> reporter: and as you heard they are just really a large array of injuries, that doctors, and staff are working with this morning. six people we now necessity in critical condition at this time. five passed away. more than 140 people who are treated or hospitalized at some point this morning at our area hospitals. numbers, of course, changing throughout the night and morning. we will bring you latest a as we get it. live from hahnemann justin finch for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". this derailment is leading to major issues for amtrak pass eveningers this morning. >> lets check with vittoria in our traffic situation vittoria. >> good morning everyone. let look live at the scene of this incident at amtrak derail

many, we are looking at live chopper three, it looks like it could only kind of gauge two cars, there was about seven cars involved and the first two the front two being the most serious in regards to injuries. as justin was saying five fatalities have been reported. as you noticed chopper three is continuing to move you will notice other cars involve. with such severity involved in this incident and so many emergency teams on the scene with the fatalities being reported, that means there is going to be a very long investigation and that will continue to impact your morning commute. lets talk about what is ahead of you if you are traveling this morning. in and around the accident scene in port rich machine right at frankford junction here are some closures associated with the activities, that we are dealing with their frankford avenue between torresdale and castor wheatsheaf and frankford ando. aramingo would be a good idea this morning to travel on but it will be even busier than

usual. sepv iv a street closed between castor and wheatsheaf and sedgley closed between castor and frankford. in regard to mass transit, as you know amtrak has been suspended between philadelphia and new york. but also, amtrak is running a modified schedule between d.c. and philadelphia in addition to the d.c. and philadelphia, they are running modified schedules between harrisburg and philadelphia, also new york abe boston. if you plan to travel to new york today or to and from new jersey transit, is cross honoring amtrak tickets between new york and trenton but maybe you're taking a bus maybe jumping in the car, keep in mind things will be heavier then usual on the new jersey turnpike, that is definitely for sure and things will be even more crowded at our new jersey transit stations as well for commuters heading to and from new york. in addition to that suspension of amtrak traveling between philadelphia and new york, few other suspensions would be chestnut hill west, and also septa trenton line and new jersey transit the atlantic

city rail line has been suspended, erika. we want to give you an idea just where this crash happened, in port richmond, the curve in the train tracks near wheatsheaf lane. vittoria just mentioned it. this is where train made its way last night and right here where that train crashed with all of that wreckage that we have been seeing, that is not far for you from where one of the country's deadliest train accidents happened in 1943, congressional limited on its way from d.c. to new york, it crashed here at frankford junction the same general area killing 79 people. right now lets go live to the scene from chopper three looking at those train cars, all seven, on their identify people crawling out of windows last night to escape that wreckage. you can see crane on the scene waiting to cut an ibeam. crews have been there all night long trying to get to any possible people still trapped in that wreckage the

sunnies due to come up in a half an hour that will greatly help crews. we are seeing first glimmers of sunlight there trying to help these crews to investigate the the situation find hopefully more survivors and figure out exactly what caused this crash. >> ukee. people who rush to the scene of the amtrak derailment are describing this tragedy. mayor michael nutter says all seven train cars were off the tracks, some were overturn, others were ripped apart as you saw. another witness scott lawman of port richmond described the scene once he got there. >> it hit power lines, there was a pedestrian bridge that hit and knocked the support out of so bridge is hanging down. three cars were laying on the side, one car was sticking up in the air, and while i was standing there, i was up there for two hours they were just holding people, just lifeless. >> unbelievable. >> these are in metro liners carriages and experts say they are solid steel. they were built in the 70's but then with that reason they

updating our coverage right now, of the deadly amtrak train tea rail. a at frankford junction in port richmond it happened 9:30 last night and five people were killed and dozens were injured, and at least six in critical condition. you are looking live, from chopper three over the scene near frankford avenue and wheatsheaf lane, this is called frankford junction. the injured were taken to several area hospitals if you are concerned about friend or you can call this hot line number 800-523-91 seer he one 800- 523, and that amtrak train began its trip in washington d.c. and on its way to new york city last night and about 9:30 and that train passed through port richmond section

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao, joins us from 30th street station with the latest from that venue, jan. >> reporter: erika and ukee, red cross is helping folks find ultimate transportation. they have set up a resource center at 30th street station just around the corner there to an area off limits to reporters. they are helping these people fine buses providing food, water, and comfort, we have seen quite a few people coming in with casts some in wheelchair all too shaken up to speak with us this morning. as a result of the deadly derailment amtrak has suspended services between philly and new york, however new jersey transit will honor

amtrak tickets between trenton and new york city, also happening today modified amtrak service will be provided between philadelphia and washington and philly and harrisburg. transportation disruptions will last for sometime. mayor michael nutter says there is no circumstance in which there would be any amtrak services this week through philadelphia, he has seen these mangled tracks and down wires personally, and besides the damage the investigation into the crash is just beginning as transportation officials make their way to the scene this morning so a lot of passengers had a very long night waiting to get on buses to points north, a lot of people those injured passengers starting to arrive looking for a way to their final destination as well. red cross is on the scene and helping, lets take a listen. >> w comfortable and providing emotional care. it could have been an emotional tragic evening. we want to comfort them and make them feel as though they work through the day. >> reporter: red cross has had dozens of volunteers, on the scene, since this happened,

they are thanking their volunteers, just seeing news and coming to help. in the meantime, people we were able to speak to going for buses points north north city, we spoke with them this morning, they are just thankful their safe this morning and they are sending their thoughts and prayers to these victim families. we are reporting hive at 30th street station jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". so much was impacted today by the train crashes lets check with vittoria with the latest vittoria. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. actually thousands will have to really think about how they are going to restructure their commute this morning. we have a few closures in and around the the the area of frank for junction so lets start there, we will talk about mass transit. if you are traveling in and around that of port richmond, prank forward avenue closed between torresdale and castor wheatsheaf closed between frankford and aramingo. castor and wheat chief. also sedgley avenue closed between castor and frankford. but due to so much activity, and ongoing investigation that

will be, throughout this day, today and beyond the afternoon, into the evening i would say we could even potentially find more closures then this. try to steer clear of that area if you can. in regards to amtrak well again, as we have mentioned it has been suspended between philadelphia and new york. but they are running a modified schedule between d.c. and philadelphia also, if you are traveling between harrisburg and philadelphia and new york and boston. thankfully new jersey transit is cross honoring amtrak tickets between new york and trenton. that is definitely at least a good piece of news this morning. with that said you'll find higher volume then usual if you are planning, to head to any of the trenton transit stations, it is busy, and if you are maybe driving to new york or to and from going to find busier travel then usual on the new jersey turnpike. also suspensions that are happening, chestnut hill west, trent than line for septa and atlantic city rail line as well. the so again a lot of people reworking their morning rush

but one thing that can be worry free would be wet they are morning. >> that is absolutely true, vittoria. even though we will fine a significant breeze throughout the day i don't think that will be enough to necessarily hinder the rescue efforts and clean up efforts that are going to be on going out there in the investigation. lets look at how temperatures fa is still on a mild start here but we are in transition mode here in philadelphia 62 degrees temperature at airport. seventy in charleston. you can see how that blue contour is moving south. sign of the cool air started to settling in and cooler neighborhood network cameras at pleasant valley middle and high school reflecting the break in the cloud and coolness out there. 52 degrees. we will see that wind pick up with time if it hasn't already, reporting significant gusts, but this is a nice day expect more sun then anything. this is what i like to call weather trifecta, beautiful take coming up, friday cloud start to build with time and we could see a shower by that night with the warm front
