commuters this morning. heat get right to nicole brewer there in port richmond with an update for us, nicole. >> reporter: we're here at intersection of frankford avenue and sedgley avenue and you can tell daylight is giving us a better picture of just what happened here on the tracks, in fact, now we can get a glimpse of one of the train cars there on its side in between those two tilted utility poles and wires that were pulled down by force of this crash. chopper three hd is also showing us an area view of the crash site as we look at that video here in port richmond just a few hundred yard from where we are standing. you can see seven cars including an engine were involved in the wreck. mangled mess here. in all 243 people on board that amtrak train number 188 it was coming from washington d.c. headed to new york city when it jump tracks at frank for junction. this is a section of track had that has a large curve to it that sent 65 people to local

hospitals. six of them in critical condition at this hour. we have five people confirmed dead, and as you can see it was a scene last night as local, state and federal authorities all came together and at one point we are told there were 200 police officers here on the scene. they were joined by philadelphia fire department and "eyewitness news" spoke to jesse wilson. >> i have never seen anything so devastating. they are in pretty bad shape. they have completely derailed from the tracks. they have been destroyed. at loom number shell has been destroyed and of turn complete ly. >> reporter: just chaos all around emergency vehicles, flooding the scene transporting injured passengers, people being treated for everything from concussion toss severe lacerations, broken bones and even shock. passengers on the ground doing whatever they could to get off that train. we spoke to a mother and her

son who made it out safely and described what it was like aboard that train and mayhem that inn sued. >> we were just on the the train and all of a sudden it started to shake and we were in the front seat and this huge red suitcase just came flying at me our train was actually on its side. it pushed me on the to the side of the train and hit my chest. i think i have a few fractured ribs. i'm a nurse. i tried to help anybody there. there is very many injured people on the train and they are were very upset. my son went back and got everybody off the one car. he helped them out there was a small opening in the door and we were able to get out. >> reporter: as daylight breaks a lot of people wondering how and why this all happened and if all 243 passengers are accounted for we were told that cadaver dogs

were on the scene to search for potential victims in word yet on whether or not that fatality count has increased but back here live still an ongoing investigation trying to figure out what happened here in port richmond. that is very latest live back to you in the the studio good we just saw images of the dozens of people being treated at that scene and taken to area hospitals. dozens of people, in fact affect. >> 243 people on board and well over half of them having to go to the hospital. that is justin finch at hahnemann hospital with more, just continue. >> reporter: erika and ukee, earlier this morning we spoke to first respond hours say they saw lots of walking wounded at that scene, people with bumps and bruises but could walk safely away from that crash site but we now know close to a 140 people were either treated or hospitalized at area hospitals. we know six people are in critical condition and five people have lost their lives. those transported were brought to area hospitals including an

man here where we have video of the transport happening late last night. lets get video of that right now. there are 30 patients here athahnemann, seven were admitted, we know ten have been released but many are still in treatment at this time. their injuries said to include broken bones burns as well as contusions. aria frankford torresdale has 26 patient was minor injuries at the torresdale campus, 30 patients are being cared for at this time. there were seven cars involved in this derailment, these cars thrown from the tracks there. many people inside thrown about as well, suffered a wide range of injuries. we have spoke to a doctor who handled this and lets take a listen. >> there was some people with bad internal injuries and you know damage from the impact, you know loss of blood and blood pressure, there are a couple two or three very, very significant. other injuries that we saw

port richmond. we have a lot to talk b we will start first with the mass transit. indefinitely service suspended between philadelphia and new york in regards to amtrak. also in regard to amtrak they are running modified services between d.c. and philadelphia. in addition to that harrisburg and philadelphia, new york and boston are also running on modified scheduled. there is a bright spot for anyone trying to travel to and from new york, traveling by car, that is one kay but would i anticipate higher then usual volume heading out of bucks county toward new jersey on route one, definitely on the new jersey turnpike, mass transit, traveling new jersey transit you can cross honor your amtrak ticket, and new york and trenton. and there is a bright side, and, in your commute. chestnut hill west line, was restored but they are running some service delays there. so i want you always to anticipate the worst so that way you're well, well

and drink and get their bearings. red cross is helping them fine alternate transportation to their home and their final destination, many of been hopping on bus these morning. i have seen a handfull of people all bandaged up, one had her entire leg bandaged up. a couple of other people had cuts on their legs, and had their hand in wraps as well. they were all very shaken up this morning. simply said in comment. would than woman said she was happy and thankful to be alive. as a result of this deadly train derailment people are trying to make their way home and amtrak has suspended northeast corridor services between philly and new york as vittoria has been telling you all morning long. new jersey transit will honor ticket between trenton and new york city and there is modified amtrak service between philly and washington and philly and harrisburg. problem is point north and getting there. this transportation difficulties rums will last for a while there noise circumstance that there will be any amtrak service this week, through philadelphia, he

saw when's arrived there. >> it hit power lines there was a pedestrian bridge that it hit and knock the the support out of. so the bridge is hanging down. three cars were laying on their side, one car was sticking up in the air. while i was standing there, i was up there for two hours and they were just pulling people, just just lifeless. >> as jan carabao mentioned american red cross is helping people were on board amtrak, northeast regional train 188, they have set up a center at webster elementary school. if you have a family member or friend who may have been on that train amtrak has a special hot line to call, and that number is on your screen right there 1.800.523.9101. again, 1.800.523.9101. one pass evening was over her saying it was a nightmare it cannot be happening. this is not the the first time there was a tragedy on those exact same tracks. look at this newspaper article

lower 70's, much different daze in compare ton yesterday in that regard. wind is still out there but don't think it will be strong enough to hinder any of those rescue effort going on right now, as crews continue to investigate and clean up that scene. storm scan three has essentially started to empty out. what you see in the wake of this frontal boundary those speckles of green don't worry about them. we will only find a handful of cloud here and there and see how things clearing out nicely outside cut town area middle will school. fifty-four the temperature there and the sunnies peeking through what is left of any cloud cover. now we do unfortunately have an enhanced fire risk, specifically across the state of new jersey at noon time today, a red flag warning will take effect with low relative humidity, all of the typical features gusty wind and a high of 30 miles an hour. enough to send your trash can lid down the road as well. keep that in mind. but by tomorrow, even as early a as tonight we will see that wind ease up.

we're told the numbers could rise but right new there are at least five people confirmed dead in the accident, and dozens more are injured. six people are in critical condition, and the injured are at several area hospitals investigators from the ntsb are on the scene trying to determine, the the crash. former congressman patrick murphy was on amtrak train number 188. he appears to be all right and helped some of the injured. >> he posted some pictures to his twitter account from the the train car, in the immediate aftermath of the derailment. we have those photos right here. this first picture you can see car tilted to the side and next one a fire fighter is trying to help victims again, you can see somebody climb over the seats as train carries tilted on its side. we caught up with murphy shortly after the crash. >> i just pulled myself up, and it was leaning over to the side of the train.

there is a curve. it looks like the engine just kept going straight right off the curve right down the hill and all of the cars just followed with it and the engine was all the way over into the yard. it missed that tanker by like 50 yards. while i was standing up there for about an hour an amtrak guy came by and telling me yeah, it turns out those tankers are full and if that engine would have hit that tanker it would have set off a explosion like in other. we're seeing out of the whole tragedy that is one good thing that it missed it. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter called this a disastrous mess but he just heard from that eyewitness that it could have been in fact been worse. but just a devastating scene out here in port richmond. no word yet on whether or not all 243 passengers have been accounted for. also no word on how and why this crash occurred.

is frankford avenue was earlier closed. they have new reopened frankford avenue between torresdale and castor but police are directing traffic. traveling or trying to travel, either wheatsheaf or seemingly, and closure points in and around, and mass transit checklist. amtrak is suspended indefinitely, and from philadelphia to new york. we are seeing in philadelphia, also between harrisburg and philadelphia and new york and boston. if you are trying to travel between new york and trenton you can, take new jersey transit because they are cross honoring amtrak tickets. also for trenton line that has been suspended ac regional rail line has also been suspended. i do want to mention, if you are traveling on 422 in this rush hour this morning eastbound we have an accident at 23 causing a huge backup only allowing right lane to get by, you will want to give yourself more time in and around all areas this morning. now back to the desk. social media was just

injured victims. that is where "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us right now, she has been there all morning jan. >> reporter: thirtieth street station has been a resource center for these injured passengers. red cross realize that had passengers are being discharge from the hospital looking for a place to go, they ended up here as they make their way home. many of these passengers are not from philadelphia they are trying to make their way point north. they with come here looking for help. one woman just passed by our camera. i don't know if you saw. that they have been streaming in here this morning. red cross is taking them to an area off limit to report tours give them food, water and comfort and help them find alternative transportation to their final destination. many people have been hopping on bus these morning. this has been a very long, trying night for a lot of people. amtrak is now suspended northeast corridor service between philadelphia and new york. new jersey transit, however will cross honor those amtrak tickets between trenton and

new york city. modified amtrak service will be provided between philly and washington and philly and harrisburg. people are just trying to get around derailed trains this morning. long night for people. a very trying night for people on board this derailed train. woman i spoke to just a few minutes ago had a bruce on her head. she says she was knocked out. she didn't realize what was happening. she came too. she went to hahnemann hospital being helped there. she was on her way to see her daughter and her new grandchild at the time. she's happy to be alive this morning but very shaken up a lot of people are. we have seen many people in wheelchairs with their hand and arms bandage, cuts and bruises, those people too difficulties straight to go on camera with us. we will bring you live coverage from 30th street station, jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news", now back to you. back to the derailment coverage in a moment but in other news a man is under arrest in the hospital bed accused of running over four police officers. it a happened when officers responded to i a call for a

car crash at seventh and chew in olney yesterday. when officers got there police say driver identified as 46 year-old rodolph kite junior hit the gas barreling into three officers. a fourth officer was struck at ogontz and stenton avenue. police say two other officers opened fire hit willing the suspect. despite being shot the suspect continued to drive 2 miles before he was arrested kite's friend told "eyewitness news" her friend suffered a seizure before the the crash. >> i'm looking at him and he was fully cursing. and full criminal condition this morning. and to me, it shouldn't have way. police say kite will be formally booked in yale when he leaves the hospital.

nepal officials are telling people to evacuate after a second earthquake. least 65 people. it follows an earthquake three weeks ago that left more than 8,000 people dead. this latest quake has triggered landslide building collapses and, it sent thousands of terrified people into the streets. helicopters are scouring an area roughly 50 miles northeast of katmandu for a miss mag reen core helicopters. it vanished delivering disaster aid. activist rally to observe the 30th anniversary of the move bombings. in 1985 a confrontation between philadelphia officials and group ended as a bomb was dropped on to the group's row home. eleven people died, fire destroyed some 60 row homes the only living survivor talk to "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter. >> we felt the house shake.

we are close to 7:00 o'clock in the morning we will update the deadly train derailment at frankford junction in port richmond. at least five people were killed and dozens injured we're told those numbers rise. they were rushed to several area hospitals and red cross ace cyst continuing many people. investigators from the national transportation safety board are searching for the cause of this derailment, it will take sometime though. we will here from one's motional passenger who

survived the crash. >> i was on the third, you know the train coming back and i don't remember anything. i did not hear any noise. i to not see anything. when i started hearing people i was on the side. someone told me i was delirious and that they carried me off. my shoes are not my shoes somewhere i lost my shoes. a lady gave me her shoes. >> people banding together. >> hearing so many stories. >> banding together. >> dozens of passengers are still in the hospital this morning, being treated for injuries from that derailment. >> three on your side health reporter stephanie stahl joins us standing by temple university hospital where we're weighed to go get an update from those doctors on the injured there stephanie. >> reporter: that is right doctors here at temple are supposed to be out here at any moment to update us on this situation.

philly.com. of course, this is affecting, thousands of commuters, not just in our area but surrounding areas vittoria. >> absolutely, you will notice mass transit affect obviously but in and around the scene of the incident in and around port richmond and brideberg. we have a lot going on. let go right to the maps and we will break things down for us. if you are traveling around that incident scene right around frankford junction. so frankford avenue between torresdale and castor was earlier close, they have reopened the roadway but police are directing traffic. wheatsheaf lane still between frankford and aramingo, sedgley avenue closed between castor and frankford. lets give you a check on the mass transit checklist. amtrak has been indefinitely suspended between philadelphia and new york, however they are running modified schedules between philadelphia, d.c., harrisburg and philadelphia and new york and boston so you do have some options there. another option would be a new jersey transit cross honoring amtrak tickets between new york and trenton. we also have two other
