good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. the amtrak train was going twice the speed limit. he slammed on the breakakes but it was too late. it was travel 1g 06 miles per hour when it hit the curve. the speed limit is 55 miles per hour. at least seven people were killed, many more than 200 others were injured. rail service along the new york corridor is suspended forcing thousands to seek alternate transportation. crews worked hard at the crash ite. don champion is there with the latest. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, alison. investigators say it's too early to tell if it alone caused the accident. ntsb investigators say their work is just beginning. crews used heavy machinery

overnight to remove the wreckage from the train 188. they're being moved to a different location for further inspection. cbs news has learned his name is brandon bostian. it shows the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour at a sharp curve when it should have only been going 50. >> there's no way he should have been going that fast. >> reporter: all seven went off the rails as it left the station tuesday night. seven were killed and over 100 were hurt. >> we plan to interview the engineer at the first tournament we can. we want to go back and look at the operation of the train. >> reporter: aside from looking at the actions of the engineer they're also taking a close look

at the condition of the tracks at the derail site. they're also looking at forward facing cameras. it's the deadliest accident in 16 years. now some passengers are still unaccounted for. eight others remain in critical condition in the hospital. there's no word just yet when#9 000 people use that leg of the segment per day. alison? >> don champion philadelphia. thank you, don. we've learned of the identities of five of the passengers killed on the train and the search for one man is going desperate this morning. >> reporter: a banking executive, a news industry worker, a navy cadet, an educator and a tech ceo and mother of life all lost their lives here when the amtrak train went off the rail on an evening commute. the heartbreak here remains.

justin zemze rey was heading home to rockaway new york the 20-year-old was on break as a second year cadet. his family heard about the crash while waiting for him to arrive home. >> i went online to see if everything was on time, they said there was a derailment and we got the phone call this morning. >> reporter: they share dd. >> it's a painful day for the entire academy and all those affected by the tragedy. >> reporter: wells fargo executive aed bybided by gilani split hiss time and was a father of two as well as gaines who was traveling home at the news

guys. not that they're not trying but coming up empty don't do it. >> reporter: yesterday red cross volunteers were at the station to offer support to about 150 people who were on the train. a spokesperson described many of them as shaken or distraught. craig boswell, cbs news philadelphia. as we reported more than 200 amtrak passengers were injured. they described a chaotic scene as hundreds scrambled for their lives. the most scariest part was when the lights went out. >> you saw people being thrown out of their seats, luggage going everywhere. it took a few minutes to realize the amount of pain you were in and that's when you started hearing the screaming. >> nearly all of those injured had fractured ribs.

doctors indicate they were rattled around a lot. the house appropriations office is taking heat after talking about cutting amtrak's budget. they would cut their spend big $251 million. the representative criticized his colleagues for letting the public down by failing to make safety a priority. >> they expect us to fund their priorities, they expect us to watch over their safety when they're on trains planes cars and on highways. last night we failed them. >> one of the amendments called for 85 million yrs to send positive train control. it's to prevent trains from going over the speed limit. the stretch did not have ptc but it had been installed on the southbound side of the track. the philadelphia crash was the deadliest train crash in

drivers had to leave their cars in floodwaters. they were able to rescue three people and got them to safety. no injuries were reported during the rescue. in nepal the search for a missing marine helicopter continues. it has been missing since tuesday. search crews are using infrared technology to detect signs of life. the u.s. has redirected some satellites to help in the search. the helicopter was delivering relief supplies following the kwaek. the taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed five people including an american. gunmen stormed a guesthouse at a party in the neighborhood that's home to the united nations compound. six people were wounded and more than 50 hostages were rescued. at least 70 piemt are dead in a fire in the philippines. it burned a slipper factory.

police said the fire started when sparks from a welding machine caught chemicals on fire. bars on windows prevented many from escaping. a bill ending the national security agencies mass collection of phone records is headed to the senate. the house overwhelmingly passed the freedom act yesterday. it replaces the system to search foreign data on a case-by-case basis. they secretly collected all phone records became public but key republican leaders in the senate opposed the bill. a bill that would abandon most is getting steam in congress. the republican-led house lead it. but it faces an uncertain place in the senate. the suspect in a series of new york city hammer attacks is hospitalized this morning after police officers shot and wounded

in northern california a coast guard helicopter crew rescued a woman trapped on a cliff near crescent city yesterday. she had spent the night stranded on the cliff above the pacific coastline and suffered from exhaustion and sun exposure. the chopper flew her to safety. here's another look at the top story. investigators say the amtrak train that crashed tuesday night was going 106 miles per hour when it hit a dangerous curve. that's more than twice the speed limit. the engineer has been identified. it's unclear if he talked to investigators. at least seven people were killed. more than 200 injured. more than a dozen are still hospitalized. train travel on the corridor is
