hello everyone i'm ukee washington. i'm erika von tiehl. time to get back to work for investigators in that amtrak train derail many. >> national transportation safety board will hold a briefing later today. owe far the ntsb says the train was going at 106 miles an hour, more than twice the speed limit before it ran off the rails. now sources tell "eyewitness news" the engineer gave a statement to police but he has in the directly talk with the ntsb. the the crash killed seven people and injured more than 200 others. "eyewitness news" has live team coverage of the aftermath of the amtrak tragedy. the justin finch has more on the victims coming up in a moment but first lets get out to jan carabao at that scene in port richmond with the very latest developments, jan. >> reporter: a lot to do on the the scene here. the first up is this very thorough investigation. investigators have remained on the scene here overnight and ntsb tells us that these officials will likely stay on the scene for at least a week. they also want to start

interviewing the train's crew and passengers. take a look at the video. we do know how fast this train was traveling before the accident. it was speeding down these tracks at the twice the limit. ntsb says train was traveling at 106 miles an hour coming in the sharp curve in the track. they say train engineer applied emergency break moments before the derailment but that only slowed the trains slightly. limit here is just 50 miles an hour. train's black box and front mounted camera has been recovered and they hope those provide vital clues but the big question remain, what was the engineer doing and why was he going so fast. >> we plan to interview the train crew and a other personnel. we would like to interview passengers of the train. we will be conducting a site distance test. we will be testing the signal system the train control signals. we will be testing the braking

system and detailed analysis instead of the cursory analysis that i mentioned earlier, off the recorders, we will be doing a very detailed, down load and an assist of those reporters. our mission is to find out in the only what happened but why it happened, so that we can prevent it from happening again. that is really what we're here for. >> reporter: of course, ntsw officials want to talk to the train's engineer but they want to give him a couple days to recover. this accident has killed seven people and injured more than 200. much more coming up live, but we are live from port richmond, jane carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". engineer behind controls of the deadly derailed amtrak train is brandon bostian. >> the train was traveling more than twice the the speed limit when it ran in the sharp curve tuesday night. the ntsb wants to talk to that engineer. nicole brewer joins us with more on the investigation.

a a lot of people have questions. >> reporter: this investigation is certainly ongoing. we don't know the cause of what happened with that amtrak train but we do know, ukee and erika, who was behind control when it flew off the tracks. identified as brandon bostian. it says he began in july of 2006 as a passenger conductor and then began work as an engineer in december of 2010. the just hours after that crash the three two-year old from new york changed his profile picture to a black square, you can see it on your screen there in an effort to shield his identity. we do know he was treated add the hospital and released at whiz point he gave an initial statement to police and voluntarily provided a blood sample. at this point he a has not spoken directly to the ntsb but officials chairman says they are not rushing to judgment despite harsh word from mayor michael nutter. >> a person has gone through a very traumatic event and we want to give him a opportunity

to recover for a day or so before we interview him but that is a certain high priority for us. >> clearly it was reckless in terms of the the the driving by the engineer. there is no way in the world that he should have have been going that fast. >> the train was traveling about 106 miles per hour, about double the recommended speed around that frankford junction curve the ntsb say bostian did apply fully mergecy breaks just moments before that train derailed. in addition to speed ntsb is looking at the condition of the track and train signals of course and human performance. bostian has hired an attorney but definitely strong word from mayor nutter. he says there is really no excuse, unless the the guy had a heart a attack or something. he is stick to go that investigation. >> this investigation will going on for a while and it will be thorough. we are learning more about the victims of the train derailment. our team coverage continues with "eyewitness news"

reporter justin finch outside of temple university hospital where many of those injured are being treated justin? >> reporter: erika and ukee, that is right good morning. temple university called in extra staff to care for more than 50 people brought here from that derailment yesterday. now more than two dozen have been released at this time, the rest are still inside recovering and we are learning more about their recovery as well as those seven people who lost their lives. of the seven dead, five have been identified, just continue zemser a naval academy mid ship man from new york city. his mother susan spoke about his loss. >> he was absolutely wonderful. everybody looked up to my son. there is no other word i can say. >> reporter: also from new york abid gillani a senior vice-president at wells fargo. rachel jacobs an education tech company ceo based here in philadelphia her family released a statementing a in part thinks an unthinkable tragedy. rachel was a wonderful mother, daughter sister and friend.

derek griffith the a dean of a college in brooklyn, new jersey. temple cared for more than 50 amtrak victims, 22 patients remain in treatment, eight in critical condition. thirty before taken to hahnemann hospital. rangshawn shaw is one of them. he suffered injuries from his vertebrae back and ribs. he says when the lights turned out, the trauma set in. >> it took a few minutes for everyone to realize the the pain that they were in and you started to hear the screaming. >> a very scary event indeed, yesterday off camera we spoke to a loved one of the one of the dead victims here jim gaines a software architect with the associated press. a friend tells us this is a reminding how fleeting life can be. we hud note victims were taken to aria torresdale and frank for hospitals. penn presbyterian as well as einstein. most of them at this time have been discharge. we are live from north philadelphia i'm justin finch

for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". amtrak services still affect this morning because of the crash. vittoria has more on that. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. we have put together a mass transit checklist. i will step out of the way so you can take it all n let's start with amtrak. indefinitely till service has been suspended between philadelphia and new york. you know that. if you are traveling the the atlantic city rail line they are shuttle busing between pennsauken and 30th street station. also, the trenton line has been suspended in regards to regional rail. now west trenton line, little different story they have added a additional trains due to increased role. same thing for your traveling of the market frankford line due you to increased volume and they are making all stops. also if you were an amtrak commuter and you have a ticket, new jersey river line and a few of the new jersey transit buses as well as patco line are all cross honoring tickets, so you definitely do have some options, for commuting but do i want to caution you if you do plan to jump in your vehicle and head

to new york or head to trenton we have been seeing increased volume on the new jersey turnpike. we have seen increased volume on i-95. we have seen increased volume on route one throughout bucks county because of folks making their way to trenton to continue their morning commute. as well as your a afternoon and evening rush hour. do keep that in mine. we also still have a closure point the derail. wheatsheaf lane closed between frankford avenue and aramingo. frankford and castor we have police directing traffic in and around this area we want to take to you tape have of than a earlier accident that he occurred if you are traveling, or were traveling are traveling right now in the northeast. as we take a look here, it was a a two vehicle crash a very serious crash right at the intersection of grant and welsh, and i know you are thinking of grant and welsh as larger intersection but grant is actual bring that big super wawa at krewstown. it is right around the curve. company be careful around this area police are still directing traffic. the lets get a check of

police say that it all bee again when a trash truck struck an overpass at camp hill road in upper dublin. the other three vehicles struck debris causing this tractor trailer hauling paper to overturn. the truck driver was taken to the hospital, and his injuries are unknown at this time. our time 5:10. our coverage of the deadly train crash continues this morning, hear what the district attorney says about possible criminal charges also ahead four police officers hurt in the wild hit and run. we have new information about how they are diagnosis this morning. and waiting to decide, governor christie explains one of the biggest factors that is delaying his decision to run for president, we will be right back.

stay up to date on the tragedy. coming up later we will talk with the first doctors who treated, the injured patients. just past 5:13. lets check with katie for traffic and weather together. we have a cool start. >> definitely a cool start and depending on your location i call it down right chilly. it will be a tart with the nice clear sky that allows these temperatures to drop off readily here now that high pressure has settled in. that is what happens when we have a a nice clear sky and pattern like this, it means that overnight you'll lose the heat that you built up from the day before. it goes right backup to the at in months fear and storm scan is totally empty at this point. nice wide zoom shows it is certainly active in the track. that is off to the west here and this will eventually creep east as a warm front lift in, with in the just warmer air with you more cloud and showers and thunderstorms. not today. today is an absolutely gorgeous day fantastic sunshine, nice low to mid 70's the investigation. it will keep that humidity nice and low here. really pleasant. by tomorrow, we are going to

keep that unis around for better part of the day but eventually cloud to rebuild and that frontal boundary starting to lift in. that will be the beginning signal of that front's a arrival. it will eventually i think trigger a couple of showers or thunderstorms. scattered in nature throughout the course of the weekend and as early as late in the day or friday night that we will start to see wet weather firing up here but in the meantime enjoy this. 73 degrees and sunshine. you cannot beat it. later on tonight we will drop down to a seasonal 52 under a generally clear sky and moving forward in the forecast temperature do start to warm up here. mid 80's expectation both saturday and sunday and then again as we get a warm front moving in the area but it looks like that warm front essentially gets stuck. it looks like it will keep potential at least for some showers around on monday, and probably tuesday, as well and then we should start to clear things out completely by wednesday. but i wouldn't call any of these days a wash out it is just, there might be some rain drops out there. >> okay. >> yes.

police were pursuing their vehicle. four philadelphia police officers involved in the hit and run are out of the hospital this morning none of their injuries were serious the suspect rodolph keitt junior is till in the hospital. authorities say he hit three officers with his koran tuesday and then took off before hitting the fourth. eyewitnesses say keitt was on medication after recent heart surgery and that may have caused him to hit the officers. a federal jury least zooms deliberation toss decide if the convicted boston marathon bombers will be put to debtor spent spend the the rest of his life in prison. twenty-one year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev was convicted of the twin bombings in april 2013 that killed three people and injured more than 260. the defense claims tsarnaev's older brother led him down a path to terrorism. it must be a unanimous decision to impose the the death penalty. coming up this morning a family with 12 sons, just welcomed baby number 13, we will tell you if that new born

there's over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. jim kenney and tony williams are fighting over public schools versus charters. i think they're both wrong...it's making sure they all get a good education. teachers should have their contracts respected. they also should be held accountable. and it's wrong philadelphia gets less school funding than other parts of pennsylvania. i'll work with harrisburg to change that. but if they refuse i'll take them to federal court. as mayor i'll do what's right for them.
