5:31 am
seven people were killed and more than 200 injured when amtrak train 188 derailed here tuesday night and investigators have since converged on the crash site, ntsb says the train was traveling at 106 miles an hour coming in a very sharp curve in the tracks. they say train's engineer applied the emergency brake moments before the derailment but that slowed the train slightly to 102 miles an hour. the limit is just 50. now, the train's black box and front mounted camera have been recovered. investigators hope those provide vital clues. they say automatic braking technology called positive train control was in place here as it is in many areas along the northeast corridor this accident probably would have been avoided. >> amtrak, throughout a good bit of the northeastern corridor has a system called advanced civil speed enforcement. that is called ases. and ases is installed throughout most of the
5:32 am
northeast corridor for amtrak. however, it is not installed for this area where the accident occurred, where the derailment occurred. that type of a system we call it a a positive train control system that type of system is designed to enforce the civil speed to keep the train below its maximum speed and so, we have called for positive train control, for many, many years it is on our most wanted list, congress has mandated that it be installed by the end of this year. so we are very keen on positive train conn troll. >> reporter: back out here live on the scene in port richmond at the crash site you cane more equipment continues to be pulled in here as the investigation unfolds. a lot remains about the engineer. nfsb wants to speak to him but has in the been able to do so. they also want to give him a couple days to recover.

5:51 am
conductor. he remembers this loud screech and then got really dark. when he woke up he was spitting out dirt. there was so many dirty wound. he had it all over the the place. he just remember philly e ms coming and helping him out. a lot of people, when they came in the emergency department it was like this erie quiet and calm but i think there is a lot of emotional shock and later on it wilsonk in like what really happened. >> thanks so much for joining us. thank you. i know you worked tirelessly for the last 48 hours. >> and everybody, it was an amazing effort between all people. >> thank you. >> we will be right back.
