6:03 pm
around 50 or 60 miles an hour to over a hundred miles as an hour as it headed in the curve just before the the accident. in reason why that acceleration happened. here's a little bit more just moments ago as they explained this train picking up speed going into the curve where the accident happened. >> thirty-one seconds before the end off the recording the train speed was going through 90 miles per hour. sixteen seconds before the end off the recording the train speed was going through, 100 miles per hour. >> reporter: now the recording that the ntsb is referring to is a video camera that is on the front of the train. another somewhat chilling description ntsb officials saying that camera recorded the train heading in the curve at high speed and then beginning to tilt at about a 10 percent angle. at that point the crash and
6:04 pm
video went blank the engineer had has agreed to be interviewed according to the ntsb and that will happen in the next few days. they say that the rail conditions were without any problems in this area they had been justin expect the day before and finally they said next week they expect to do i a full run through trial run through to determine on the curve just when you see that curve and when you have to begin break to go get around it safely. briefing continuing. more information coming back. we will have all of the details. live from port richmond, i'm walt hunter cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> it raise's lot more questions about this tonight walt, thanks very much. we do know identities of all eight people who were killed in the derailment on tuesday. we have learned that 47 year-old laura finamore, 40 year-old goodies accept i ferris and 45 year-old bob guildersleeve died in that crash. thirty-nine year-old rachel jacobs is also confirmed to be among the victims along with 42 year-old derek griffith, justin zemser, 48 year-old jim gaines and five five-year old

6:07 pm
speed. >> reporter: as we heard just moments ago from the leading ntsb official here on the the scene they do expect to interview the the train engineer in this crash in the next couple of days, certainly investigators are anxious to hear what he has to say. we are too. we are live in port richmond, matt rivers for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> matt, thank you. today at the site of the train tragedy amtrak's ceo made a commitment to make tracks safer for companies millions of riders. our investigative reporter charlotte huffman first broke this story yesterday and tonight she digs deeper to take a closer look. >> reporter: well, jessica it is called positive train control and it could have meant difference between life and death object amtrak this week. >> positive train control clearly could have avoided and prevented this accident. >> reporter: ntsb former chairman told "eyewitness news" yesterday that positive train control or ptc as it is known uses gps technology and ground sensors to determine

injuries in the train wreck but that is not necessarily the case when amtrak train 188 derailed tuesday night in port richmond anything that wasn't secured went flying, including the passengers. >> i would ask people and those awake what happened to you and they said oh, somebody felon me. it is not just falling on them, people were hurled violently into each other. >> reporter: which begs the question why don't trains have seat belt? i took a train from wilmington if ale a today and passengers had milk feelings. >> it is more safe with seat belts. >> people don't think of crashing a train and bus. >> odd of anything happening are so miniscule it is not worth the the effort. >> reporter: some train experts agree. >> the risk on the highway is many times higher then on railroad and likelihood of accidents like this one is extremely low. >> reporter: 2007 british study found seat belts on
6:11 pm
trains could actually do more harm than good. when simple lap belts like those in planes were tested crash dummies rotated with enough force to break their necks. when three-point belt were tested like those used in cars they did better, but seats would have to be made more vigil in order to anchor them increasing risk of injury to unrestrained pass eveningers. another survey conduct in 2006 conclude that had seat belts on trains just don't seem to be practical. in part because passengers were unlikely to use them. reporting live from 30th street station i'm jim donovan, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> very interesting stuff thank you so much. throughout this tragedy we have continued to hear one on macing survival story after another. a montgomery county man is one of them he was rescued from inside amtrak 188 but left with serious injuries. our stephanie stahl talk to him in the hospital and was there when a a very special delivery was made. we have those exclusive
