introducing the one-and-only volkswagen golf sportwagen. the sportier utility vehicle. ♪ from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". ♪ a truck slams into a montgomery county school killing the driver and tonight at 11:00 the search for answers about this deadly crash. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us much the crash happen at lower mooreland high school. tonight a high school janitor tells "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson he's lucky to be alive because he happened to walk into another room at just the right time.

>> reporter: it was a matter of time. what took hours to pull out only took an instant to go in. >> it was bam and it was out. >> reporter: school janitor dan said if that instant was just a few seconds earlier he would would be dead. >> i i would have been gone. no question. it blew it apart. yeah i feel lucky. >> reporter: police say shortly before 2:00 this afternoon, this black pickup truck drove straight into a wall at lower moreland high school. eyewitness josh, says he watched the car accelerate with no sign of braking. >> i saw a black truck. i saw it rev its engine and smoke coming from it. i her it gun down the parking lot all the way down until i heard this gigantic whack. >> the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the truck struck several water pipes causing flooding and cutting power to the high school school. less a minute away from changing

dan's lifer. >> i've already thanked god more than once. >> reporter: the work now is speedy repair. not only patching that whole but fixing any flooding left over and restoring power after what happened in this accident. in the meantime, no word yet on if school will start on monday. school officials will make that decision on sunday. reporting from lower mooreland steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> turning now to our weather. we saw some thunderstorms around the region today. "eyewitness news" in northern liberties for the preakness at the piazza. the rain was pouring at this point. but it didn't put too much of a damper on everyone's good time. meteorologist justin drabick is in the weather center to tell us what the rest of the night looks like. >> we're looking much better as far as thunderstorms go. majority of steady rain moved offshore especially east of ocean county new jersey. maybe a few areas of light sprinkles or drizzle through the overnight hours. we're not done yet. out to the west a surge that has

to come through tomorrow with that humidity around a threat for scattered shower or storm sunday afternoon sunday evening but we had damage reports earlier tonight. especially in up montgomery county. gilbertsville at 1 inch diameter sized hail also 55-mile per hour wind gust reported in one of the thunderstorm. douglas township and new happen never township in montgomery county both reporting trees down as well with some of those thunderstorms. 71 degrees this hour right now we're in the 60s north and west. little bit cooler because of the rain but still very humid outside. doylestown quakertown coming in at 64 degrees. and we're in the upper 60s right now in mt. holly, new jersey. here's what you'll wake up to sunday morning. it will be mild start to this finish of the weekend. mid and upper 60s early around sunrise then top off once again the mid 80s it will be humid. watch out for scatter shower or storm anywhere where you are. not everybody sees it and i think the chances will be less than what we had tonight. talk about how long the warmth and humidity lasts in the seven day forecast coming up in a few minutes.

natasha. >> thank you so much justin. we are following developments in the amtrak tragedy. here's the very latest now at 11:00 o'clock tonight. federal officials ordered amtrak to improve safety in the area of tuesday's deadly dee ray rail many in port richmond. trail service between philadelphia and new york will resume on tuesday. work does continue to replace the tracks and other equipment in that area. five crash survivors remain in critical condition at temple university hospital. the ntsb is interviewing a septa engineer who had something strike his train just moments before the amtrak crash. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers spoke exclusively to an eyewitness who was on board that septa train when it happen. >> reporter: we don't yet know what caused this damage, a september regional rail train windshield cracked by a projectile on tuesday night. monica williams was just a few rows behind the train's engineer when it happen. >> we hear this thud and um,

immediately i'm thinking, oh, god, we hit somebody. >> reporter: it turns out something hit the train. the septa train came to a hard stop and the engineer opened his door. >> at that point he he comes out and you can see inside and you can see the windshield there's a shatter. it's shattered. there's a hole. >> reporter: few minutes later amtrak 188 stopped and moments later it derailed. >> the train just passed. >> a second train was also hit by a projectile scene in this passenger photo. the amtrak train heading south from new york city to philadelphia was struck in the same area and shortly before the derailment. now investigators are trying to figure out if amtrak 188 was the third train that night that was hit by a projectile. the train's engineer told ntsb investigators he doesn't remember if his locomotive was

hit by something but this hole in the train's windshield is suspicious enough that the fbi is now involved. >> immediately i wonder if it's connected, how often does it happen that windshield shatters and the train we just saw there was a tragedy. >> reporter: even if the train was hit by a projectile there's no telling if that played roll in the crash. the question investigators will attempt to answer in the days and weeks to come. the meantime while that investigation continues repairs continue to be made along the damaged pouring of that track. officials best hope those rail lines can reopen to commuters sometime early next week. we're in the sat center, matt rivers cbs3 "eyewitness news". also today federal officials ordered amtrak to add speed restriction systems to northbound trains along the frankford curve where that derailment happened and along other dangerous curves along the northeast corridor. the system notifies the engineer when the train is above the

speed limit and automatically applies the brakes if the engineer doesn't son. amtrak must also now post more speed limit signs to alert engineers. stay with "eyewitness news" for the very latest on the amtrak tragedy. we will have updates for you both on the air and any time online cbsphilly.com. fire breaks out on the ocean city boardwalk tonight. this eyewitness video posted to twitter shows smoke billowing out of the seventh street surf shop just south of gillian's pier. we spoke with ocean city police this evening and they told us there were no injuries. no word on what caused the fire just yet. penndot meantime says the pedestrian bridge over roosevelt boulevard at sully avenue in rhawnhurst is safe. inspectors were called out to take a close sr. look because it appeared a section of the bridge hit this. the boulevard was shut down for a short time for the inspection but all lanes have since reopen.

also now crews have recovered the bodies of all eight people from u.s. marine helicopter it crashed during an earthquake relief mission in nepal. the wreckage of the chopper was found friday in the mountains northeast of the kathmandu. at the time of tuesday's crash the aircraft was carrying six marines and two nepally soldiers soldiers. as the global humanitarian effort continues in that region "eyewitness news" reporter alec andrea hough spoke with local doctors just returning from the earthquake ravaged region bream us had in front of the qatar airline desk. destinations kathmandu. >> do you ever quite know what to expect, never. no. >> reporter: team of eight volunteer doctors and logistics professionals are head to do nepal to relieve a team that has been there since before a second devastating earthquake hit the country on tuesday. >> just had another earthquake this morning a 5.5.

list. it's all right here on cbs3. hoping to change the future for those who live with autism, that was certainly the mention mission for many in mt. laurel, new jersey. hundreds participating in the walk now for autism speaks 3k run. 5k speed walk. the crowd enjoyed a beautiful day once the rain cleared out earlier this morning i had the honor of actually helping to host event my third year always a great time. always great to see tomorrow families and corporate sponsors helping the cause as well. a local marine meantime killed in afghanistan is honored today. a homerun derby was held to honor captain ryan iannelli and to raise money for scholarship in his name. ryan's family, friends and community members came out to kings way regional high school in gloucester county today for a fun competition on the baseball field. the same field he once played on on. >> a great man h profound effect on everybody he ever came in

contact with and we're just looking to honor him and carry that name on for the rest of our lives. >> ryan was killed in 2011 in a helicopter crash during a combat mission. he was posthumously promoted to captain. >> the largest high school regatta continues right here in philadelphia today. more than 5500 student athletes from all around the country competed in the rowing championship on the schuylkill river. today was the final day of the two-day competition. a little bit of rain out this morning in jersey where i was. it cleared up and now a little bit more tonight. >> good news the storms have come to an end. now we'll talk about a chance for maybe shower overnight. kind of a the same deal tomorrow tomorrow. could see a scattered storm break out in late afternoon and evening. the chances will be less than tonight. nothing widespread. let's go out to storm scan3 right now. cold front to our north. basically across southern tear of new york state where we have the instead your showers and

storms. for us scattered shower comes through you can see more showers extending back into the ohio valley that needs to come through here. that will come through tomorrow especially later in the afternoon and into the evening. there you go steady rain moving east of toms river now. there may ab sprinkle or two near dover delaware. a lot of this not reaching the ground on radar. improving conditions overnight. better travel weather. at least we had rain today. it's been awhile. we're starting to clean out the atmosphere. get a break from the high pollen also the grass needs watering obviously over quarter of an inch in philadelphia from the thunderstorms tonight. as well as trenton .32-inchinches. not a whole lot of rain to the north and west. reading over a tenth of an inch. struggled to to get to .06 of rain in wilmington. allentown not that much rain. low 70s even upper 60s cooler spots to the north and west reading right now 66 degrees. and it's really a warm and muggy all there was out entire northeast and mid atlantic.

this summer like air mass sticks around again during the sunday. we look at the dew point temperature. this tells us how much moisture is in the air. when it's high it feels humid. right now a dew point of 67 degrees. that's very high. general wal we see in the middle of the summer. very huggie outside. tomorrow's dew point the same deal. lower 60s so again due feel in the air tomorrow outside. noire heff until the middle of next week. the front stays to our north tomorrow. we're still on the warm and humid side. late day shower or storm is possible. again not widespread. little bit cooler on monday i think we start to see 70s especially across new jersey as we get that wind off the ocean much the wind switches right back out of the south for tuesday. warms up again mid 80s with some scattered showers and storms as the next cold front through. let's time thing out. overnight 2:00 a.m. this model showing the clouds maybe a spotty shower or twosome locations and then tomorrow morning much quieter with the

clouds around into the afternoon afternoon, peeks of sunshine maybe or shower two late afternoon into the evening. monday kind of the same deal. starts off quiet in the morning. afternoon shower possible with that wind coming in off the water. temperatures again warm start to our day. sunday 60s to around 70 degrees. inland spots again will be surging into the lower 80s running about 10 degrees above average once again. little bit cooler on monday. you can see that push of cooler air in off the owing. overnight, shower chance otherwise mostly cloudy, 68 degrees. tomorrow partly sunny humid afternoon shower or thunderstorm thunderstorm. phillies game tomorrow you may have to dodge that shower chance especially later during the game game. first pitch 1:00 they've. temperature 78. warm humid for tuesday. humidity drops wednesday back into the mid 70s thursday very nice. 72 that kick off orr at the shore as we get close to the summer season. >> that's the beach ball. >> that's the beach ball. >> love the beach ball. >> love the seeing the beach
